Mason (MD) Shurley

04/12/2022 - 10:59 , by TKing09

Mason David Shurley (MD) age 63 of Christoval, Texas passed away on April 6, 2022 at home.
He was born January 16, 1959 in Sonora, Texas to Nancy Royster and David Derry Shurley. He attended Sonora Public Schools until the family moved to Odessa, Texas. He was a graduate of the Permian High School class of 1977. He briefly attended Texas State University.

MD worked at a variety of professions, but found his true passion when he and his brother, Marvin decided to investigate the idea of bringing South African Boer Goats to Texas. They formed the Shurley Brothers Meat Goats. He bought his first buck in 1993 named Krugerrand. He was the Grand Champion of the North American continent. After several successful attempts to learn more about
the protocol required to import more, he returned to New Zealand and was introduced to breeders including Johnny Henderson. He traveled to South Africa to meet with Phillip Henderson. He attended shows, visited ranches and purchased more goats. MD and the Hendersons created Boer Brothers International LL. His desire to promote the Boer goat was accomplished through judging, shows, education and teachable moments. He was proud to be a part of creating this historical meat goat industry.

He also worked with the local youth groups to help them find high quality Boer goats to show in
competitions locally and nationally. Stories have been shared about how MD would take the time to
teach these youths about caring for their goats and how to prepare for competitions with an award
winning animal. He also won several awards personally including Grand Champion in 2000 Southwestern International Boer Goat show and numerous awards in Louisiana at the ABGA National Boer Goat Show in 2002.

He frequently returned to South Africa to learn more and improve his herd.
He was an active member of American Boer Goat Association, West Texas Boys Ranch, Sonrisas Riding therapy and the Dallas Safari Club. He was active with WTBR for 9 years and Vice President of the Board of Directors for Sonrisa. He helped start the fundraiser Boots, Buckles and Pearls. This benefited the ROPES course for special needs children and military veterans. Tommy Neal said he was always the first one to volunteer.

MD enjoyed being around people and could be found most Friday nights eating prime rib at
Shenanigans and enjoying the company of his friends. He enjoyed inviting friends out the enjoy the river for swimming and fishing while sharing stories about his goats. He was an avid hunter and the full size lion in his house was a constant topic of conversations.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sons Alexander Clay Shurley of Dallas and Joshua Moody of Austin. His sister, Derry Lynn Summer of New Caney, Texas. A niece, Jennifer Summer Green and her husband, Evan  of Splendora, Texas. A nephew, Collier Shurley and his family from Eldorado. Other family members include Clark and Betty Johnson from New Braunfels, Justin and Amanda Buchler and girls from Pearland, Chance and Shawna Staton and boys from Kingwood. His beloved ZDOG will miss him the most of anyone.

He was predeceased by his brother, Marvin F. Shurley and nephew Nicholas E. Shurley. His father,
David Derry Shurley and mother Nancy Johnson will meet him on the other side soon along with grandparents: Collier & Mary L Shurley and Marvin & Ineze Royster. He lost his horse, Petro earlier this year.

He was a good neighbor and friend to many. These special people included Scott Furman from Ft. Stockton, Olie Smith from Sonora and Pam Shurley from San Angelo. He will be missed by many,,, and like he always said when you left.... ADIOS!!!

Johnell and Lloyd Drexell moved to San Angelo in 1967 where Drexell served as President of Angelo State University until 1994. After moving San Angelo, she joined her husband in dedicating her life to Angelo State. She was a gracious and devoted First Lady, and is remembered by many as she hosted students, faculty, and community members in that capacity. She and her beloved husband demonstrated this through their contribution to each grandchild's education and introducing her grandchildren to a travel abroad experience as well as a few trips to Disney Land. Prior to moving to San Angelo in 1967, she taught for more than 18 years in Louisiana and Texas.
Johnell was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Lloyd D. Vincent, her parents, her sister Mary Ellen Stuart, brother-in-law, Gerald Vincent, and sister-in-law Wanda Ellis Mitchell.
