She was at every birthday or celebration that involved her family. She was a strong woman and had a great relationship with God. Her smile, her hugs, her kisses, and her words of encouragement will truly be missed. Juanita was the heart of the family.

George "Barney" Sisco

10/07/2021 - 15:28 , by TKing09

George Barham “Barney” Sisco Jr., 72, passed into his eternal life with our Lord Jesus Christ, Monday, October 4, 2021, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. Barney was born in San Angelo, Texas, on April 15, 1949, to parents George and Alice Sisco of Water Valley. He was raised on the banks of the North Concho River in Water Valley, and aside from 4 years attending Texas Tech University, spent his entire life as a steward of the land and livestock on the family ranch in Water Valley. He graduated from Water Valley High School in 1967, and received his Bachelor of Science in Range Management from Texas Tech University in 1971.

He was a believer, a husband, a father, a friend, and he was good at it. He believed in hard work, honesty, and generosity. He followed closely in the footsteps of his best friend and mentor, his father George, whom he considered his role model in all aspects of life. His calling was to be a rancher, and this was his passion. His daily endeavor of caring for the land and livestock would be interrupted only to spend time with family and friends.

In 1966, Barney met the love of his life, Charlotte Foster, from Sterling City. Her parents were quite impressed with the young man and his request to court their daughter; the resulting match was to be everlasting. The couple was married in 1972 and made their home on the Water Valley ranch. They had a fabulous almost fifty years together and are blessed with many wonderful friends. They have two boys, Trey and Ty Sisco. Barney was their biggest supporter and loved to watch them play football, basketball, run track, and show sheep. He was so proud of his young men. When his boys had families of their own, he became the proudest grandfather and biggest fan. He taught them the importance of hard work and passed on his love for ranching and family. Barney was very patient and spent quality time with each of them. His grandchildren loved their “Dadbern”.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alice, and his brother-in-law, Lynn Glass. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, his loving sister, Helen Glass, his son Trey and Trey’s wife Jennifer and their sons Brenden, Wyatt, and Will Sisco, and his son Ty and his wife Lindsey and their children Grae and Steele Sisco.

Barney served on the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Lamb Committee, Water Valley ISD School Board, and Water Valley Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers, Texas Cattle Raisers, and Water Valley United Methodist Church.

Graveside service will be on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Foster Cemetery in Sterling City. Services will be conducted by honorable pallbearer and first cousin Reverend Doctor Richard White. Pallbearers will be Fred Chandler, Jimmy Dickson, Gary Foster, Skeete Foster, Tooter Jameson, Richard “Hotdog” McCormick, Lee Puckitt, and Stan Sisco. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Baker, Johnny Copeland, Wade Demere, Craig Demere, Charles Flemming, Kathi Coulter Johnson, Billy Johnston, Sally Munn Lacy, Tim Turner, and the Water Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

We are thankful to the many doctors and nurses at Shannon Hospital, Encompass Heath, and Baylor Scott & White that helped with Barney’s care.

The family welcomes donations to the Water Valley Volunteer Fire Department as an expression of sympathy instead of flowers. Mail to: PO Box 311 Water Valley, TX 76958

Gloria June Henshaw Burleson

10/07/2021 - 15:24 , by TKing09

On October 1, 2021, Gloria June Henshaw Burleson, of San Angelo, joyfully went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ after a lengthy but courageous illness. She was 93.

Gloria was born in Smackover, Arkansas on May 15, 1928 to Langford William Henshaw and Laura Belle Baggett Henshaw. Gloria grew up in Kilgore, Texas during the Great Depression and WWII. She delighted in a childhood of independence, simple pleasures, and a healthy dose of adventure. From swinging from vines over the Quachita River to roaming the countryside in search of wild berries for pies, Gloria was always up for an exciting excursion and she carried this sense of adventure with her throughout her life. To celebrate her 78th birthday, she went skydiving. At 79, she served on her final mission trip, this one to China. At 80, after her family lovingly prevailed on her not to skydive again, she announced—with a twinkle in her eye—that she would honor the occasion with a ride in a fixed wing glider.

Gloria accepted Christ at age 13 during a lake encampment. This experience profoundly changed her: she remained a faithful Believer and devoted student of God’s word for her entire life. She graduated from Kilgore High School at 17 as a class favorite, being voted Best Citizen. This was a fitting accolade for Gloria, as she remained a devoted American Patriot for her entire life. She attended Kilgore Junior College before earning her degree from North Texas State University at 20. She was a Major in the WROTC and was proud to be a groundbreaking member of the now world-famous high-kicking Kilgore Rangerettes.

After graduating from North Texas State, she landed her first teaching job at Eldorado High School in Eldorado, Texas, and married Billy Green of Eldorado in 1950. After her two sons, Bill and Tom, were born, the family moved to Sonora where she was a mother, homemaker and a substitute teacher. In 1967, following a divorce, she moved to San Angelo to re-launch her teaching career as a Sophomore English teacher at Central High School. In1970, she married Sidney Jean (S.J., Jean) Burleson. They enjoyed 16 years of love and companionship until Jean’s passing in 1986. Gloria taught at Central for 26 years. Many of her former students remained in touch with her until her final days, a true testament to her devotion and service to others.

Gloria loved learning and books, and read daily until her passing. From classic English literature to modern theology, she read widely and passionately, eagerly exploring a wide range of subjects and authors.

She was an admirable optimist with a quick sense of humor. She seemed to always find a “silver lining” around every storm cloud—including her illness—and navigated life’s most difficult seasons with faith, humor, and a generous heaping of wit. She found opportunities to seek joy, practice gratitude, and celebrate the everyday, even amongst life’s trials and tribulations. She taught courage and strength, and above all, faith and love. We celebrate her new heavenly life all the while knowing our earthly lives are a little bit dimmer without her radiant light in them.

Survivors include: son David William (Bill) Green and wife Debbie Ray Green of San Antonio; son Thomas Franklin (Tom) Green, and wife Heidi Hooper Green, of Austin; ; 5 grandchildren, Cassie Green Woodliff, Jerrad Ray Green, Tyler Lee Green; Meagan Green Labunski, and Thomas Evan (Evan) Green; 7 “little darlings” great-grandchildren, Nathan Woodliff, Noah Green, Dolly Green, Lily Labunski, Jack Labunski, Henry Labunski, and Abigail Green. Gloria is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews and some wonderfully dear and loyal friends.

Gloria is preceded in passing by her husband Sidney Jean Burleson, parents Langford and Laura Belle Henshaw, sister Joan Anne Henshaw Warkentin, and brother Langford William (Buddy) Henshaw, Jr.

The family invites those who knew Gloria to share memories of her on the Harper’s website so that those memories can be shared in celebrations of her life.

Services will be held at Harper’s Funeral Home chapel in San Angelo on October 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation at Harper’s will be from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on October 15 and from 10:30 to 11:00 preceding the service on October 16. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.

Gloria asks donations go to the West Texas Boys’ Ranch, the Trinity Fellowship Church or the First Baptist Church, both of San Angelo, or the church or charity of your choice.

The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Visiting Angels, her long-term caregiver Norma, her additional recent caregiver Sylvia, and San Gabriel’s Hospice.

Byron Sonny Cleere

10/06/2021 - 15:20 , by TKing09

Byron E. “Sonny” Cleere passed away peacefully on Monday, October 4, in San Angelo. He was 89 years old.

Sonny Cleere is remembered by close friends and family as a business leader in San Angelo who brought laughter and cheer to all those around him and a man with an almost insurmountable work ethic who selflessly served others. More importantly, however, he set an example for all around him with his strong personal faith in Jesus Christ.

Cleere was the youngest of four children born to Buford and Myrtle Cleere in Alice where he excelled in football and track. He earned an athletic scholarship to attend Abilene Christian University where he was team captain. He was an All Conference and All American guard and played on the undefeated championship college football team in 1952.

He was drafted by the Chicago Bears to play football professionally. However, before he was to report to Chicago for training camp, his thigh was badly injured by a close-range shotgun blast during a duck hunting trip. Instead of NFL glory, Cleere shared his enthusiasm for sports and education with the young people of Ozona as both a coach and a social studies teacher for 10 years before moving to San Angelo.

Pierce Miller, who was a student of Cleere’s in the ‘50s, recalled him as a good man. The ladies said he was handsome and he was a dedicated weight lifter.

“I will miss his deep, baritone voice, but i know he is in a better place,” Miller said. Miller’s wife, Betty, said the senior girls called him “Chanticleer,” presumably referring to a proud and fierce rooster as portrayed in The Canterbury Tales.

“He was the epitome of a man going places. Good looking, great voice for talking and singing, plus qualities of a leader,” Miller added.

He wore his ACU football championship ring proudly, said lifelong friend Lee Pfluger. “We all had nicknames and his was the ‘Lord of the Ring,’” he said. Friends recall fondly frequent hunting trips with Cleere to Pfluger’s 700 Springs Ranch near Junction. There, Cleere held court with a tight-knit group of about 10 friends.

“On those hunting trips, he would wake us all up at 4 a.m. offering us orange juice and coffee,” recalled Pfluger. “We had some good times. He was like a brother to me,” added close friend David Hirschfeld.

Getting to his office at 4 a.m. was important to Cleere. Hirschfeld said he spent the first early morning hour studying the Bible. “He was deeply religious,” he said. Cleere’s father was a minister in the Church of Christ. “Throughout his life, Sonny never let loose of his faith,” Hirschfeld added.

Cleere built a sizable business as a highly regarded owner of Meadows, Fisher & Cleere Insurance. His salesmanship approach was based upon his gift to serve others. “Sonny never asked for your insurance business,” Hirschfeld said. “When I asked him why? He told me, ‘Everyone knows what I do. If they think I can help them, they’ll come see me.’”

Cleere was known as a respected community leader where he held leadership positions throughout his life in organizations such as the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, Leadership San Angelo, the Little Olympics, the Symphony Chorale, West Texas Rehab, the San Angelo Area Foundation, and the Symphony Orchestra.

“Sonny was an absolute patriot,” Pfluger said. Pfluger credited Cleere for founding the first Back the Badge organization in San Angelo. He was also instrumental in launching the annual San Angelo Support for Veterans Hunt where wounded military warriors were brought to San Angelo free of charge to hunt on area ranches. The traditional annual hunt was especially appreciated by participants and sponsors alike because of the brutality — and number of wounded survivors — of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars over the past two decades.

Cleere will be remembered for being instrumental in launching the annual July 4th Pops Concert and Fireworks show with the San Angelo Symphony to celebrate the birthday of the United States of America at the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial River Stage. Coincidentally, July 4 was Cleere’s birthday. Close friends and associates fondly recall Cleere’s annual ice cream parties at his home immediately following the pops concert to celebrate his birthday.

Cleere was for 38 years “The Voice of San Angelo” where he announced every home game of the San Angelo Central High School Bobcats football games. He also gave generously of his time announcing at galas and banquets, and by doing so, made those events memorable and enjoyable.

In all aspects of his life, Cleere exemplified the highest standards of excellence, achievement, and service to others. To his closest friends, however, his most remarkable trait was his fierce loyalty to God, his family and his friends.

“We lost a good man,” Hirschfeld said. “He loved San Angelo.”

He is preceded in death by one grandchild, Byron Dixon Cleere.

Cleere enjoyed the love and support of his wife, the former Claudia Ketner, and his children; Kirk and wife Patsy, Ned Munoz and wife Patsy, Penny Cleere, and Courtney Paige Fajkus and husband Gregg, grandchildren; Jabyn Cleere, Ashtyn Cleere, Camille Fajkus Claire Fajkus, Caroline Fajkus, Sofia Munoz, and Victoria Munoz, one sister; Willodern Ellis.

The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 11, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church, 37 E. Chadbourne St., San Angelo.

The family has asked that memorials be directed to West Texas Rehab, San Angelo Support for Veterans, or a charity of your choice.
