Mary Anne was born in Plainview. Her parents were migrant workers at the time. She was raised in Big Lake. She graduated in 1976 from Reagan County High School. She was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church. She was a single mom who worked very hard to raise her children. She worked along Jo Alice Poehler making meals for the Elderly in home bound and Trailblazers. After this she was a waitress for local restaurant owner Francis Tijerina. Later, she worked for retail and ended working her last 14 years at Stripes. She loved going to dances and enjoyed music very much. She will be remembered for her kindness, lending a helping hand, infectious wittiness, and smile. These last few years she gained two special friends, Josie Goodloe and Kathy Smith, they met every Tuesday for Tacos, and Thursday and Friday at the local bar. Although she will be missed dearly, she has left mounds of memories to reminisce. She loved her grandchildren very much always bragging how smart they were and enjoying every second she could be around them.

Mary Ann Pelzel

10/04/2021 - 09:01 , by TKing09

Mary Ann Pelzel, 88, of Wall, was welcomed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, October, 2, 2021. In great celebration, she is home and rejoined with her family and friends, especially daughters Debbie and Patsy, and her husband Calvin.

A Rosary Service will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 5th at 6:00p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will also be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 6th at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Joe Choutapalli and Deacon Alan Pelzel will preside.

Mary Ann was born on October 18, 1932 to Felix and Ida (Feist) Braden in Wall, TX. The youngest of ten children, she grew up working hard, helping the family, picking cotton, babysitting nieces and nephews, and trying to keep up with all the older siblings. She married her sweetheart and the love of her life, Calvin George Pelzel, on January 9, 1951. Calvin and Mary Ann were stationed in Colorado while Calvin served in the U.S. Army (1951-1953). Thereafter, they moved back to Wall where together they farmed, raised four children, and loved many grandchildren and great grandchildren for almost 70 years.

Mary Ann was cherished as a wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the sweetest soul and cared deeply for her loved ones, constantly praying and providing for her family and community. Mary Ann was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Helen’s Altar Society, and actively served the church for many years.

Together, Mary Ann and Calvin enjoyed Polka dancing, deer hunting, and playing dominoes with family, friends, and the domino club. She poured much love and time into her yard and garden, and was an avid member of the quilting club. She instilled a strong work ethic in her children and grandchildren working on the farm. She was an excellent homemaker and taught her kids and grandkids about sewing, quilting, baking cookies and pies, canning pickles, making slickers, picking up and shelling pecans, chopping cotton, and pulling weeds. No one left her house hungry, without food to-go, or without a big wave from the kitchen window. She was a devoted wife, a proud “Mom” to her children, “Granny” to her grand- and great-grandkids, “Aunt Mary Ann” to many, and a friend to all.
Mary Ann is preceded in death by her husband Calvin, daughters Debbie Lange and Patsy Schwertner, parents, Felix and Ida Braden, brothers Raymond, Walter, Harvey, Boots, Ernest, David, and sisters Rosalee Hoelscher, Mae Dell Eggemeyer Slaughter, and Christine Sefcik.

She is survived by son Steve Pelzel and wife Debbie of Garden City, TX; daughter Monica Noland and husband Kevin of Miles, TX; brothers-in-law James Pelzel and Fred Pelzel, and sister-in-law Carol Pelzel. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and great-great-great nieces and nephews.

Grandchildren: Heather (Brett) Hendrikson, Heidi (Rene) Duron, Colby (Ruth) Pelzel, Tamra Schwertner, Lance (Amy) Schwertner, Ty (Korri) Lange, TJ (Keria) Pelzel, Ashlee (Derrick) Fuchs, Reagan (Stefani) Noland, and Abbey (Dusty) Hicks. Great-grandchildren: Gavin and Gage Hendrikson; Townes, Scout, and Guy Pelzel; Emarie and Lyle Schwertner; Bryson, Paityn, and Jaelyn Lange; Tristan Puente and Bronson Pelzel; Josephine, Augustus, Otto, and Silas Fuchs; Milo and Fritz Noland; and Calvin and Thomas Hicks.

Pallbearers for the service will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Brett Schniers, George Halfmann, Dick Braden, Larry Schwertner, and Nick Lange.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to her dedicated caregivers and to St. Gabriel’s Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please hug your babies, share some memories, bake some cookies, plant some flowers, call a friend, and/or consider a donation to the Debbie Pelzel Lange scholarship fund at Wall ISD or the charity of your choice.

10/04/2021 - 08:55 , by TKing09

Coach Hess was born December 1, 1936 in Farmersville, Texas. He was a 1955 graduate of Farmersville High School. Jim married Carol Baze on June 21, 1957 in Farmersville. He then received his bachelor's degree in history from Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he attended on a football scholarship and his master's degree in education from North Texas State University. Jim started his coaching career in Farmersville then coached at McKinney High School, Rockwall High School, Kilgore High School, Rice University, Baytown Sterling High School, Angelo State University, Stephen F. Austin University, and New Mexico State University. While successful throughout his coaching career, highlights include: winning the 2A Texas State Championship in 1963 at Rockwall and the NAIA National Championship at Angelo State in 1978; being recognized as the Coach of the Year by the Lone Star Conference in 1977, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in 1978, and the Big West Conference in 1992; and being inducted into the Angelo State Hall of Honor in 2010. Following his coaching career, he was a college scout for the Dallas Cowboys and later worked for Daktronics. Jim was a member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ.

While Jim enjoyed great success on the field, his greater success was the impact he had on the players and his fellow coaches. Many players remarked that they are the men they are today because of Coach Hess.

In addition to his wonderful relationships with his players and coaches, his family was his pride and joy. His most loving and steadfast supporter was his beloved wife of 64 years, Carol, without whose sacrifice and devotion his success would not have been possible. He was and remains dearly loved by his two daughters, Kim and Terri, who were blessed to call him "Daddy." And he was Papa to 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, many of whom were with him his final day.

In addition to his wife and two daughters, survivors include Kim's husband Blane Williams of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Terri's husband Mike Garatoni of San Antonio; grandchildren, Tara Joiner, Lauren Guins and husband Cody of Christoval, Ali Hill and husband Casey of Memphis, Tennessee, Peter Garatoni and wife Whitney of Houston, Courtney Jezek and husband Travis of Midland, Jared Williams of Castle Rock, Colorado, and Michael Garatoni of San Antonio; 10 great grandchildren, Ketcher, Ali Rose, Kate, Mary, Emmerson, Tucker, Henry, Brazos, Anita, and Rosie. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Willie Hess; and special aunts and an uncle.

The family would like to thank Kindred Home, the caregivers of Visiting Angels and Sarah Martinez, Medical Arts, and Ballinger rehab, who went above and beyond to extend the length and quality of Jim's life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Angelo State Athletics, Angelo State Scholarships, the Ram Pantry, or a charity of your choice.

Kenneth Casper

10/04/2021 - 08:51 , by TKing09

Retired Colonel Kenneth Casper, 80, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2021, in San Angelo.

Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Monday, October 4, 2021, at The Heights Church with Dr. James Miller, pastor, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home. Military Honors are afforded by the Goodfellow Honor Guard.

Colonel Casper was born August 27, 1941 in New York, New York to John and Florence Casper. Kenneth was a retired veteran of the US Air Force serving from March 3, 1964 until his retirement on June of 1994. Kenneth married Mary Hutchinson Coppock on October 13, 1973. He has been a resident of San Angelo since 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Casper; a stepdaughter, Lori Saxon and husband Frank of Jamestown, North Carolina; two granddaughters, Courtney Kerr Ward and husband Michael of Gilbert, Arizona, and Caity Kerr of Jamestown, North Carolina; a great granddaughter, Chloe Grace Kerr of Gilbert, Arizona; two nieces, Maureen Howley of Bell Port, New York, and Diane Domin of Massapequa, New York; two nephews, Thomas Domin of Calverton, New York, David Domin of Babylon, New York; and a great nephew, Jamie Howley of Bell Port, New York.

Ken always joked that he was a Fordham man from birth, having been born in Fordham Hospital, attended Fordham Prep and then Fordham University, Bronx, New York. He graduated with a degree in Russian, having worked all four years to pay for his tuition. Upon receiving his draft notice, he enlisted in the Air Force hoping to become a Russian linguist. The Air Force, in its greater wisdom, decided he would train as an intelligence analyst. His first assignment after graduating from OTS was to Goodfellow AFB for intel training. It was here that he first met his in-laws to-be when he was temporarily assigned to the Civil Engineering office, working for Greg Hutchinson (Lt. Col., USA Ret). Upon graduating from his class at Goodfellow, he went to Japan, Saigon, Viet Nam, and Ramstein AFB, Germany. During his Air Force career, he obtained a Master of Science in Education from University of Southern California, 1970.

He returned to Goodfellow AFB in 1971 to manage the Officer's Open Mess. It was then that he renewed his friendship with the Hutchinsons, met his step-daughter-to-be, Lori Coppock Saxon and eventually his wife, Mary. Ken always told people that he did things backwards when acquiring a family; first meeting in-laws, daughter and finally his wife. Thanks to a number of Air Force and DOD moves the family made their final move to San Angelo and Ken began working as a civilian in the "Schoolhouse", retiring in September 1997 as Chief of Resources, 17TRG.

Ken was a published author of over 31 novels of different genres, a contributing columnist to the Buffalo Gap News, Christian Reporter News, and other publications. He was known for his great intellect and loved languages, eventually learning German in addition to his Russian and Latin. He loved being in conversations covering many topics and would often take an opposing view just to keep things interesting. One of the great joys of his life was reading with Chloe Grace at her bedtime or any time. She was the light of his life. His granddaughters said their Grandpa knew the answer to any question they asked and was the smartest person they knew. His many friends and family would wholeheartedly agree.

Edna Fay Price

09/30/2021 - 16:01 , by TKing09

Edna Alexander Price, name meaning, "rejuvenation, delight", was a provider, care giver, hard worker, travel enthusiast, a friend to all who let her, and most importantly a mother, passed away suddenly on Monday, September 27th at the age of 73.

Public viewing will be Sunday, October 3rd from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 4th, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Edna was born and raised in Longview, Texas to Stephen, and Juanita Alexander on August 17th, 1948. She had two brothers, James Smith, (oldest), and Ardas Glenn Alexander, (youngest).

Early years:
Edna had many friends in Longview. But one of her closest friends, (Mary Alice Ojo Simon), became her sister. Mary had a little brother, (Benny), and a little sister, (Kathy), and let us not forget about Mr. and Mrs. Simon, (their parents). Edna was adopted by them all. Edna's family and new extended family soon became one. The Simons are still apart of our family today.

Edna was a graduate of segregated Mary C. Womack High School in 1966, where she was a cheerleader and honors student. Edna then moved to Denton, Texas to attend the University of North Texas. While at the University of North Texas she became part of the first black sorority on campus, Delta Sigma Theta. While attending the University of North Texas, Edna began working for GTE as a switch board operator in 1968. This would, unknowingly, start her career in telecommunications that would last well over 30 years. It was in Edna's early GTE days in Denton where she would meet another dear friend and sister, Pat Clay.

Edna was married to Russell Price and had a son, (Stephen Price). They divorced shortly after, and she moved to Baytown, Texas in 1974. It was in Baytown that Edna convinced her mother to move in with her. Juanita would live with Edna under her care till her last days in the year 2000, but I digress. She lived in Baytown with her mother and son till she transferred with GTE to San Angelo in 1979.

Edna got remarried to Melvin Robinson in 1983 and was blessed with a stepson, (Marcus Robinson). Even though they divorced, Edna's son still considers them father and brother till this very day.

Edna was preceded in death by her father and mother, (Stephen and Juanita Alexander), brother, (James Smith) and nephew, (Ardas Glenn Alexander Jr.).
Edna is survived by her brother and sister in law, (Ardas and Alice Alexander), her son and daughter in law, (Stephen and Jessica Price), her niece, (Felisha Alexander Bates and her husband Chris Bates), her nephew, (Jarvis Alexander), and her grandchildren, (Caleb Price, McKayla Price, Colby Price, Robert Martin and Jesse Scott).
Any donations, gifts, or flowers can be sent or dropped off at Fresh Start of San Angelo, 110 S. Taylor
