Laura Fletcher

06/19/2024 - 09:43 , by TKing09

Surrounded by loved ones, Laura I. Fletcher (nee English) of Allen, Texas was called home into the arms of her Lord and Savior on June 14, 2024.

Born in Alba, Texas on June 5, 1939, to the late Laura Lillian (Alexander) English and Joseph Wesley English, Laura is predeceased by 18 siblings and half-siblings. But her spirit is carried on by her devoted husband of 62 years, Wilson Lee Fletcher; 2 loving sons and their wives: Derek Leland Fletcher & Christine Elisabeth (Reed) Fletcher; Scott Lyle Fletcher & Raelene Sue (Hancock) Fletcher; 5 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, her adoring sister Lynne Alexander and close family friends Jason Weigler and Kris Kizer who she loved as sons.

Laura graduated from Alba-Golden High School in 1957. She met Wilson in 1960 at First National Bank of Fort Worth where they both worked and later married on June 17, 1962. She was an Air Force wife in Greenville, Mississippi, a realtor for Senter Realtors in Abilene, a life insurance agent for Bankers Life, and a Loan Officer for USAA in San Antonio for over 20 years before retiring in 2013.

The job Laura loved and valued the most, though, was being a mother and grandmother. Her children were the absolute joy of her life, and she fully invested herself in them. Laura was their biggest cheerleader - encouraging their efforts in sports, music, academics, and careers, supporting them in whatever path they pursued. She was an ever-steady spiritual guide, ready with a word of wisdom, sound advice, or a wooden spoon on the rare occasions that called for it. Laura also opened her arms and heart to Derek and Scott’s childhood friends, whom she affectionately referred to as 'her children’ and were always welcome in her home for band practice, swimming, Halloween parties, or just any regular day after school. Jason, Kris and other friends were also included in many family vacations.

But parenting was simply a warm-up act for Laura. While some people devote their time and treasure to hobbies, Laura’s grandkids were her hobby. And she relished the role, taking childhood to a whole new level of fun.

She arranged for live bunnies to be their pets at Easter, beach vacations on the Gulf coast every June, visiting drive-through zoos, building pillow forts, Barbie castles and Lego cities in the living room, backyard carnivals with games and snow cone machines, swimming pools in the garage, inflatable water slides every summer, and countless hours of driving Lightning McQueen up and down the street to feed the neighboring horses or explore the woods behind the house. Every holiday visit and summer adventure ended with a personalized photo book for each grandchild and a “surprise” $5 bill tucked inside the last page.

Just as her fingertip found its way in front of the camera lens and onto the corner of countless pictures she took, Laura left an enduring imprint on her grandchildren Jake Holden Fletcher (27), Emily Hope (Fletcher) Ross (27), Sydney Lyn Fletcher (23), Grant Lawson Fletcher (23) and Gavin Dean Fletcher (17) who treasure those memories with her.

After retiring and moving to the Dallas area, Laura and Wilson regularly visited retirement homes to worship and share communion with those who were homebound. She had a unique gift for making the lonely and isolated feel special and loved.

A genuinely beautiful person, inside and out, Laura was a daughter of the King and an active, lifelong member of the Church of Christ - which explains how she was able to go about each day humming and singing so many hymns in acapella.

Laura leaves us with her legacy of unwavering faith, inner strength, selflessness, and a sunny disposition that could never be clouded - even in times of great trial and adversity. Laura lived her life with a heart of gratitude and a spirit of grit and grace.

A radiant light and blessing to everyone who knew her, Laura will be deeply missed by her family, which stretches from west to east Texas, and cherished friends at Eastridge Church of Christ in Rockwall. We take comfort in knowing she has run the race, fought the good fight, and now enjoys a banquet of bottomless chips, queso, and guacamole in a glorious mansion with a love-filled memory room and never-ending closet space.

Pamela Lewis Thornton

06/17/2024 - 09:09 , by TKing09

A Scholar, An Educator, a Molder of Young Minds…Pamela Lewis Thornton

Pam was born on August 13, 1957 in Houston, Texas. She was the daughter of Dr. John M. Lewis, a world renowned cardiologist and Donna Palmore, who once reigned as the Baylor Homecoming Queen. ‘She came from good stock.’ Pamela was the loving wife of Tom (T Gozney) Thornton whom she married in 1982 in Austin, Texas, and a devoted mother to Tiana Lee Hennings and Eric T Thornton. She got 11 year old Eric in the deal at the tender age of 24 when she married T and raised him as her own.

Pamela attended Chatham Hall in Virginia, an exclusive Girls School where she graduated in 1975. She competed Cross Country, Hunter-Jumper horse competitions and won awards throughout the South. She then went on to study at the University of Texas in Austin where she received her BA in both English and History in 1983. She waitressed to pay for her education and was always insistent on leaving at least a 20% tip when eating out. She returned to the halls of academia and received her Masters in Education from ASU in 1996, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

Pam dedicated many years of her life to teaching, beginning her career at Cornerstone Christian School then moving to Water Valley ISD for 8 years and onto Central High School where she retired after 30 years of teaching Advanced Placement English and Writing to High School Juniors. She made a lasting impact on her students and was dearly loved by them. She was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at Water Valley and twice at Central for her dedication and passion for education.

Outside of work, Pamela was an active member of the AA organization, providing support and guidance to those in search of changing their lives through belief in a higher being. Pam continued her love for horses, especially her mare “Dancer” and found solace and joy in spending time on horseback and just commiserating with them. She also enjoyed going to her mountain “Cabin” in Alto, NM where she and her trusty Texas Blue Lacy, Reina would take long and extended hikes on the back trails, enjoying the deer and elk and the occasional coyote they would discover on their treks.

On June 12, 2024, Pamela passed away after a brave battle with Lymphoma Cancer. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren and all of those lives she touched with her kindness and compassion.

She is survived by her HUSBAND “T” (Tom - T Gozney) Thornton, her daughter Tiana Lee Hennings and her sons Cohan and Drake and her son Eric Thornton and wife, Eva and their children Thomas, Erica, Emmanuel “Gene” and Pete Thornton, her brother, John Lewis, Jr. and wife Megumi, her sister Linda Sunde and husband, Dr. Doug Sunde and many cherished nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces and cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Especially her good friend Sandra Hulse, whom she thought of like a mother.

Although Pamela may no longer be with us, her spirit and her memory will forever be cherished by all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace with her sweet Jesus, whom she loved with all of her heart.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd, at 2:00pm with Fr. Hal Scott officiating. Burial to follow at Knickerbocker Cemetery.
