Fred “Cuni” Caballero, Jr., 72, of Grand Prairie, TX, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 24, 2025, in Dallas, TX. He was born on April 28, 1952, in San Angelo, Texas, to Fred Caballero, Sr. and Gloria Lopez Caballero.
Cuni grew up in San Angelo and graduated from Central High School. He went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he met and married the love of his life, Christene Gonzalez, on October 22, 1974. Together, they shared 51 beautiful years of marriage.
He worked as a Chemical Processor at Ling-Temco-Vought and Triumph Aerostructures- Vought Aircraft Division, retiring after 30 years of loyal service.
Cuni was a devoted son, brother, husband, uncle, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to his family. Known for his caring heart and quick wit, he never missed a chance to help others or bring a smile to someone’s face. He found joy in the outdoors—especially spending time at his lake and deer leases, where he loved to fish and hunt. Cuni was truly one of a kind, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Sr. and Gloria Caballero; two brothers, Ronald David Caballero and Ervie Caballero; and two sisters, Cecelia Ramirez and Hilda Vega.
Cuni is survived by his loving wife, Christene Caballero of Grand Prairie, TX; his son, James Caballero, and daughter-in-law, Ashley Caballero, also of Grand Prairie; and his grandchildren, Josh, Holden, and Sophia Caballero. He is also survived by his cherished sisters, Jeannie Fernandez of Denison, TX, and Yvonne Caballero of San Angelo, TX; and his dear niece, Jacqueline Escobedo of Abilene, TX, whose bond with him was deep and enduring—he held her in his heart as a daughter. He also leaves behind numerous other special nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Harper Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in San Angelo, followed by interment at 3:00 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, TX.
