Stephen Lynn Shaw

07/01/2024 - 16:00 , by TKing09

Stephen Lynn Shaw of San Angelo, Texas, passed away surrounded by his family on June 30, 2024, at age 75. A visitation will be from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday July 2 at Harper Funeral Home 2606 Southland Blvd, San Angelo, TX. The funeral service will be Wednesday, July 3 at 2:00 p.m. at The Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd 3355 W Beauregard Ave, San Angelo, TX 76904.

Steve, as most people called him (also known as Dad or Paw Paw), was born nearby in Mertzon in 1949. The second son and the third of four children of Verda Tankersley Shaw and Joe Shaw, Steve was also the grandson of local pioneers Fayette Tankersley and Annie G. White Tankersley. As a result, Steve grew up learning how to tend to the land that has been in the family for generations. He was proud of his heritage as a Texan and fascinated by Tankersley and Shaw history, ensuring that the lore and pride was passed down to his children and grandchildren.

In 1968, Steve met Nancy, the love of his life, who became his wife in 1970. Together, they raised a daughter and a son partly in Austin but mostly in the thriving oil and gas industry hub of Midland. Both kids graduated from Midland Lee High School and followed in their parents’ highly educated footsteps, earning their bachelor’s degrees and then master’s degrees in their chosen fields of study. Nancy and Steve’s love story was evident to anyone who witnessed them together; the evidence is a wonderful marriage that lasted for nearly 54 years until his passing. On the day he died, Nancy wore blue, which reminded her of their first date, when Steve told her that she had the most beautiful blue eyes.

“One of my favorite pictures from my wedding is of him holding hands with Nana during the ceremony,” says his granddaughter, Rebeckah. “I have vivid memories, stretching back into childhood, of them holding hands everywhere they went. When he awoke from anesthesia after surgery, one of the first things he did was to ask for Nana, joking about making his hair look nice for her, and telling her she was pretty.”

Just before Steve’s father Joe passed away, he said to his wife Verda, "Well, Lady, it's been a wonderful life." That’s the kind of lifelong outlook Steve had too. Always smiling and cracking jokes, Steve would frequently flash those deep dimples of his with a mischievous glint in his eyes. If you said something funny, Steve would say “Listen to you!” and laugh. He loved to laugh.

Nancy and Steve often teased their grandson Brian that if he didn’t give them a Christmas wish list, he’d be getting pink and purple polka dotted pants under the tree. One year he neglected to give them a list, and true to his word, Steve found pink sweatpants at Academy and attached circles fashioned from purple duct tape to fulfill their promise-slash-threat.

A passionate geologist, Steve genuinely found wonder in so many aspects of nature, learning and teaching throughout his life with childlike amazement and enthusiasm that he wanted to share with anyone who would listen. You might not be interested in seeing a bleached-out raccoon skull, but his reverence of his natural surroundings was contagious; you couldn’t help but pay attention.

“PawPaw took me to the ranch and taught me about geology many times,” his youngest grandson Torin says. “Through him, I learned how to understand history based on the geology of the area. Talking about rocks might sound like it could be mind-numbing, but he always found a way to make it interesting.”

Over the years, Steve was active in geological associations, including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, West Texas Geological Society, West Texas Geology Foundation, Society for Sedimentary Geology, Houston Geological Society, Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, Geological Society of America, Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers. He was a member of the board of directors of the Sibley Nature Center and on the building committee for the Midland Energy Library.

Gentle, brilliant, loving, and kind, Steve will be terribly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Shaw Sr. and Verda Tankersley Shaw, as well as his sister Janet Faye Middlebrook. His loving family includes his wife, Nancy, his older brother Dr. Joe W. Shaw Jr of Mertzon (and his late wife Carol), and younger brother Dr. Terry D. Shaw and his wife Anne of Broomfield, Colorado. Steve adored his two children, Katherine Shaw Cox of San Angelo (and her late husband The Rev. Dr.

Sean A. Cox) and William Keeling Shaw and his wife Kristin Vanderhey Shaw of Austin. His three beloved grandchildren are Rebeckah Cox Sellers (and her husband Kelby), Brian Stephen Cox, and Torin Shaw. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins on both sides of the family.

Donations to honor the life and contributions of Steve Shaw can be made to the Angelo State University Geology Field Camp Scholarship Account or to the Angelo State University Field Geology Scholarship Account.

A live stream will be held on the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd Facebook page.

Donald Lee Stamps

07/01/2024 - 15:56 , by TKing09

Donald Lee Stamps, 85, of San Angelo, TX, passed away peacefully on June 29th, 2024, after a short illness.

Donald was born on May 11th, 1939, in Newport, Arkansas, to Robin and Ruth Stamps and was a 1963 graduate of the University of Arkansas. Growing up in The Delta, Donald cultivated a love of the Blues and early Rock n' Roll. His love of music took him into the segregated clubs of the time where he saw everyone from Ray Charles to Little Richard. He and his friends even had a handshake deal with Elvis Presley to play at their high school, which unfortunately fell through once Elvis gained national exposure. Donald lived a long and happy life with his beloved wife of 61 years, the former Edith (Edie) Casey of Batesville, Arkansas. His career took them all over the country until they finally settled in Solon, Ohio, where he retired as a senior VP for Ohio Transformer in 2004. But a career was a distant second behind Donald and Edie's true passion: animals. Over the years they owned countless dogs including Sam, Critter, and RFD (Real Fine Dog).

In retirement, Edie started a pet-sitting service fittingly named "Bone Voyage", Donald worked as a dog trainer, and they both visited local nursing homes with their own dogs. Donald will forever be remembered by his friends and family for his kindness, generosity, and affability. He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Stamps Ford, and his wife, Edie. He is survived by his brother, David Stamps, and his nephews, Theron Stamps and Eric Ford.

Barbara Bryant

06/30/2024 - 13:00 , by TKing09

Barbara Clay Bryant, 85, of San Angelo, surrounded by her family in her daughter's home, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, June 27th, 2024.

Public viewing will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church at 2321 Armstrong St. Services will follow at 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Roger, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Barbara was born on May 23, 1939 in Paint Rock to L.C. Ogle and Naomi Lillian Jones-Ogle, the 3rd of ten children. In 1969, Barbara met the love of her life, David Ross Bryant, and they were married that year on October 25, 1969 in Newcastle. They resided in Dallas, then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1970, and together they had a daughter, Marlee Robin, and a son, Gary Ross. In 1980, Barbara attended TVI Community College for 4 months to proudly attain her high school diploma. They loved their home there and raised their 2 children until returning to Ballinger in 1988.

Barbara was a hard worker and spent her childhood alongside her 9 siblings and her parents, sharecropping all over Texas, all of them working cotton fields, beginning even before they were school age. Later in life she worked retail at Sears, waitressing many jobs, an interior decorator at Montgomery Ward, and her favorite, becoming a certified nurses aide working with older people which she adored. But her most prized job was being a Mom and a grandmother, a wonderful homemaker most of her life. She was a loving neighbor to many and a loyal friend. There was nothing that couldn't be solved over a cup of coffee and a conversation about her love for Jesus. A true ambassador for Christ, she shared Jesus with family, and friends alike - from the bank to the grocery stores, to anywhere she went, she never met a stranger.

At a young age, she became a huge fan of country music legend Marty Robbins, and served positions in his fan club in Louisina, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. She and her husband Dave remained personal close friends of Marty until his death in 1982. Barbara was a big fan of "real country music" of the Grand Old Opry, but her favorite was Christian and Gospel music, listening to KLOVE 24-7. She spent her last years loving her family, her grandbabies and great grandbabies all, constantly sharing the love of Jesus with them, and in her last days, comforting them all and specifically speaking to all of them, reassuring that they will see her again someday and making sure they knew that Jesus is the only way for that promise. She always told them how much she loved them, and that she was praying for all of them every day. In her final hours, we were blessed to even hear her pray and thanking God, even for every single hardship and heartache and illness she had ever been through. Her faith was unshakable, passing that on to each of us.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father, L.C. Ogle; her mother, Naomi Lillian Ogle; her husband, David Ross Bryant; her sister, Lahoma Trammell; her brothers, Wesley Ogle, Milton Ogle, Billy Ogle, Burl Ogle, Cody Ogle, Robert Ogle, and Larry Ogle; and her niece, Cynthia Ann Waldrop.

She is survived by daughter, Patti Brindley Cradic and husband Billy of Starks, Louisina, daughter, Marlee Robin Wheeless and husband Jason of San Angelo; her son, Gary Ross Bryant of San Angelo; a sister, Wanda Harris and husband Frank of Newcastle; her grandchildren, Jacelyn Summer Grimsley of Franklin, Tennesee, Ryan Amber Howell and husband Koby Howell of San Angelo, Brady Ross Willis and fiancee Mallory Plagens of San Angelo, Jayton Lee Willis of San Angelo, Michael David Willis and wife Ashley of San Angelo, Daryell Lynn Pryor of San Angelo, Keturah Ford and husband Patrick Ford of Juneu, Alaska, Annestasia Bryant of San Angelo, Hailie Guevara of San Angelo, Kathryn Danielle Bryant of San Angelo, Matthew Bryant and wife Airica of San Angelo; great grand children, Gunner and Blaine both of San Angelo; Taylor, Mikey, and Davy all of San Angelo, Addison Leigh, Aiden James, and Atlin Rain of Juneu, ALaska; Ashlyn, Ava, Axton, Lawson, and Reegan of San Angelo, Kolton, Sophia, and Bodie of Franklin Tennesse, Madalyn, Ezra, McKenna, and Colter of San Angelo, Marley, Michael, Mia, Maddox, and Solomon of San Angelo, Castina, Jocelyn, Emilio, and Lillyanna of San Angelo. Very special bonus grandkids she called her own, Oscar, Talis, Cooper, and Cody; bonus son, David Lee Willis; bonus daughter, Charity Johnson of Hobbs, New Mexico and her life-long best friend, Dianna Johnson of Los Lunas, New Mexico. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Rita Ogle of Ballinger; and by two special nieces she was very close to, Veree Davis of Jonesville, Virginia, and Natalie Ogle of Ballinger, and a ton of nieces and nephews near and far.

The family would like to thank High Plains Hospice and her nurse Sherry, and bath aide Stephanie who cared greatly for her; her home care aide for months Jovita who we love dearly and many thanks for the love and care you gave her; and her favorite, Dr. Ty Hughston and his staff at Shannon.

Don't forget that our Momma Barbara loved all of you, but like she always said, Jesus loves you more!

In lieu of flowers, donations toward funeral expenses can be made directly to Robert Massie Funeral Home through the link below.
