Eliab Faz

Eliab H. Faz, age 65, of San Angelo, Texas passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024. 

Eliab was born on May 18, 1959 in Del Rio, Texas to Marta H. and Ezequiel Faz, Sr. He attended Lakeview High School in San Angelo, Texas. He had a passion for sports of all kinds, but he especially loved basketball. Eliab will always be remembered for the love he had for his family. 

Eliab was preceded in death by his parents, Marta H. and Ezequiel Faz, Sr.; brother Eliezer Faz; and sisters Unice Faz and Elizabeth Perez.

Eliab is survived by his sister Marta Flores and his brother Ezequiel Faz; his niece Melinda Hernandez, his niece Mary Perez, his niece Natalie Perez, his nephew Tony Lopez, his nephew David Faz, his niece Melissa Flores and his niece Irene Rojas. Eliab also leaves behind numerous great nieces and nephews to cherish his memory. 

A visitation for Eliab will be held from 5-7 PM on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Johnson's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Johnson's Funeral Home.

Gustavo S. Campos

Gustavo Santos Campos, known affectionately as Tavo, passed away at the age of 79 on June 25, 2024, in San Angelo, TX. Born on June 3, 1945, in Del Rio, Texas, he lived a rich and fulfilling life marked by his service, faith, and love for his family.

Tavo was drafted into the Air Force during the Vietnam era and was very proud of his service. Following his military service, Tavo worked in the oil and gas industry as a pumper, where he dedicated over 30 years.

Tavo had a variety of hobbies that kept him busy and fulfilled. He was an avid solver of crossword puzzles, loved scratch-off lotto tickets, and was an enthusiastic Dallas Cowboys fan. He also had an impeccable green thumb. Most importantly, he cherished his faith in God and spending time with his family, particularly his grandsons and the family pets, who brought immense joy into his life.

Tavo leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Leticia Yoela Campos; his daughter, Yolanda Denise Mota and her husband, Dustin Edward Mota; his sons, Gustavo Manuel Campos and Joe Michael Campos along with his wife, Lisa; his grandsons, Nicholas Jody Mota and Joe Michael Campos II.; and his sisters, Herminia Ramirez from Ozona, TX, and Dolores Maldonado from Del Rio, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sixta Orta Campos and Pedro Campos and numerous siblings, family and friends.

Services to honor Tavo's life will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Sonora, TX, on Friday, June 28 at 10:00 AM with internment to follow at Sonora Cemetery. Love's Funeral Home in Sonora, TX, is assisting the family with arrangements. Tavo will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew him. Special thanks and acknowledgment to our friends at Angelo State, Medway Medical Equipment and St. Gabriel’s Hospice.

Joe Martinez

Joe Martinez, 62, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2024.

Viewing will be from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Monday, July 1, 2024 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 1, 2024 at Belvedere Cemetery.

Mr. Martinez was born on June 9, 1962 in Tulia. Joey was a beloved member of the Hereford community. He graduated from Hereford High School and spent the majority of his life in his hometown. He was often seen riding his bike or walking around town, while earning him the nickname "Cannon Ball Joey" at the city pool. Joey had a passion for fishing, and cherished spending time with his nieces and nephews. He particularly enjoyed watching wrestling. Known for his big personality, a big smile and a heart of gold, Joey was a well know and cherished figure in Hereford.

Joey is walking with the Lord, eternally at peace.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond Johnson and Richard Bacon.

Joey is survived by his mother, Rebecca Martinez of San Angelo; three sisters, Trixie Stephenson, Mary Madrigal, and Jennie Flores and husband Juan all of San Angelo; a brother, Paul Rodriguez and wife Monica of San Angelo; 18 nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.

Layne Anthony Lubke

Layne Anthony Lubke went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 24, 2024. He was born July 31, 2000, in San Angelo, Texas to Douglas Wayne and Elizabeth Lubke.

Layne was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rogelio and Teresa Lizardo, his uncles, Johnny Lizardo and John L. Swanson. He is survived by his parents, and his grandparents, Anthony and Judi Lubke, of San Angelo, five uncles Ron Lubke, of San Angelo, Roy Lizardo and his wife Dana, of Tatum, N.M., Rudy Lizardo and his wife Kori, of Lovington, N.M., Luis Lizardo, of Texas and Bobby Lizardo, of Benbrook, TX; 2 Aunts, Yolanda Swanson, of Lubbock, TX, and Delia Bryant and her husband Russell, of Clovis, N.M.; numerous cousins, extended family members and friends. 

Layne grew up in San Angelo and attended school in Wall, TX. He graduated from Central High School on June 3, 2018. After high school, he attended Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. 

Layne participated in football and track during his school years. In his Junior and Senior year of high school, Layne and his teammates made the State Finales in Speech and Debate. Throughout his school years, Layne excelled in his studies and was an honor student. He wrote a short book, The Pacific War, while in grade school that was published in 2010. He also had a poem published in the Library of Congress during his elementary school years.

Layne enjoyed being with his family and friends, listening to music, and playing Call of Duty. He has had a long passion for the military, in particular he was interested in World War II. He enjoyed the many times he spent with his “Papa” Lubke watching movies and eating out. His dream was to create short military films.

Layne was a loving son, grandson, nephew, and cousin. His love and compassion for his family and friends will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be dearly missed! His family would like to thank Harper-Funeral Home for all their help and assistance. To all of you that have prayed on our behalf, sent flowers and messages of condolences, shared beautiful memories, and provided meals, THANK YOU. You have blessed us greatly during this difficult time.

Jackie Gilbert

Jackie Dell Gilbert, 85, of San Angelo passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Viewing will be from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Bronte Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gilbert was born on December 29, 1938 in Robert Lee to Lonnie and Fannie Mae Stevenson Grimes. She graduated from Bronte High School in 1958 and was named Miss Bronte. Jackie married Donald Gilbert on May 28, 1960. He preceded her in death on December 20, 2000. She worked as a beautician until it was time to be a homemaker and raise her children. After raising her children she went to work at San Angelo State School as th Recreation Supervisor. She retired after working 25 years and 7 months. Jackie enjoyed traveling to the hill country, looking for bluebonnets, doing ceramics and hand arts. Jackie could be seen in the stands watching her grandchildren play football. People say she was an outgoing, sweet lady who loved the Lord. She was a memeber of Business Men's and Women's Bible Class.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald Alonzo Gilbert; and a sister Mary Thomas.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Brenda Gilbert and husband Randy Young of Grape Creek and Reba Dianna Gilbert of San Angelo; a brother, Johnny Grimes and wife Linda of Grape Creek; five grandchildren, Katie, Casey, Aubrey, Gerogiann, and Dylan; 6 great grandchildren, Ava, Evan, Tatum, Jakob, kristiana, and DJ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Juanita Rios

On June 24,2024, our beloved mother Juanita P. Rios, entered the Gates of Heaven on her 84th birthday surrounded by her family.

Public viewing will from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM Thursday, June 27, 2024, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Friday, June 28, 2024, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel, with grandson, Pastor Danny Ortiz, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Juanita was born on June 24, 1940 in San Benito, Texas to Francisco and Raquel Perez.

She was the eldest of 10 children. Being the oldest came with responsibilities so she finished 8th grade and then began working on the farm to help her family.

She moved to San Angelo and married, became a mother and a homemaker. She had a heart to serve in the church and had many roles such as the church secretary, nursery worker and being a member of the financial committee. She had a passion to serve the Lord in any way that was needed. One of her greatest accomplishments was obtaining her GED at the age of 62.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her late husband Amado Rios, her son Genaro Henry Lopez and her brother Francisco Perez Jr.

She is survived by her daughters; Diana(Danny)Ortiz, Monica Charles, Yolanda Christy (Joe)Minjarez, Rachel(Billy)Sanchez and Michelle(Lorenzo)Sanchez; Daughter in law Debbie Lopez; 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons; Justin Ortiz, Henry Lopez, Stephen Charles, Michael Bermea, Jesse Dominguez, Jr., and Victor Sanchez.

She prayed for her family relentlessly and spoke in faith that all her family would be serving the Lord.

A special thank you goes out to her sister Andrea Garcia for the love and care she gave her through this time.

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

Vernon Smith

Vernon Claud Smith, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, June 22, 2024.

Viewing will be from 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 27,2024 at Eden Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Vernon was born on February 4, 1934 in Pottsville, TX to his parents, Bill and Allie Dutton Smith. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Vernon worked for the State of Texas Highway Department for 37 years. He loved fishing, working with animals, traveling, spending time with friends and family, telling jokes, trading horses, trailers, and cars, etc... Vernon was an all-out handyman and very generous in helping others. He had accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charlie, Cleve Wayne, and Ervin; six sisters, Fay, Willie, Jewel, Louise, Afleta, and Opal; 10 nieces and nephews; and his daughter, Kathy Elguea.

Vernon is survived by his children, Gaylon Smith, Brenda Lewellen, Dewayne Givens, Jana Whitten, and Rhonda Alsbrooks; grandchildren, Ava Jenice Juarez, Austin Elguea, Jimmy Don Lee, Kenny Lewellen, Scott Whitten, Mike Whitten, Brandy Lee, Samantha Malloy, Melissa Schneider, and Sheila Manning; 17 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his companion of 28 years, Linda Whitesell and her children, Connie Hair, Ed Chapman, and Tammy Flathouse and their families.

He was so loved and will be desperately missed by all.

Casey Lee Davis

Casey was born on July 28, 1977, in El Paso, Texas, to parents Howard Lee Davis and Lois Ellen Simpson Davis. Casey graduated from Fabens High School. He attended Blinn College, Texas tech University, and New Mexico State University. Casey loved being on the Davis family farm in Fabens. From the time he was a little boy, he rode in the truck alongside his dad. He also used to ride on the tractor with his dad using his pillow to prop him up on the seat. When he was grown, he worked with his dad and his uncle, Rives Davis, on the farm, eventually becoming the foreman. Casey also farmed on his own, leasing several neighboring farms. Team roping with his buddies and his horses Whiskey and Rojo was Casey’s favorite pastime.

Casey was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Simpson Davis, his sister, Kristin Davis Rodgers, his paternal grandparents, Claude and Itasca Davis, his maternal grandparents, Colonel (Ret.) Leonard and Elizabeth Simpsons, and his aunt, Janice Simpson (Stoney) Stonebreaker.

He is survived by his devoted father, Howard Davis; uncles and aunts, Rives (Valerie) Davis, Scott (Jenna) Simpson, and Linda White; nephew and nieces, Zachary Rodgers, Makayla Shea Rodgers, Alexandra Faith Rodgers, and their father, Brian Rodgers. In addition, Casey is survived by cousins Tammy (frank) Johnson, Troy (April) Davis, Morgan White, Adam White, Justin Simpson, Daniel Simpson, and Lucas Simpson, as well as other family members and friends.

The family would like to thank the Concho Health and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice of San Angelo for the loving care they gave to Casey. It will always be remembered and appreciated.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Harper Funeral Home, from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Harper Funeral Home, at 10:00am. Burial to follow at Fairmount Cemetery.

Russell Monroe Oates

Russell Monroe Oates, 58, of San Angelo, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2024. He was born in Pecos, Texas to Tana K. Breiten and Charley W. Oates.

Russell grew up in Balmorhea, Texas helping out on his family’s farm. He went to Balmorhea High School and graduated with the class of 1984. After graduation, he moved to Pecos and worked at Bob’s Thiftway for many years. Russel loved the sense of community in West Texas and enjoyed greeting his customers...many of which were his lifelong friends! He later moved to San Angelo where he met and married Tina K. McDaniel on December 26, 2015.

Russell loved to be around his friends and family dancing and listening to country music. His smile and laugh were contagious, full of joy and happiness. One of Russell’s biggest passions was football, most importantly the Dallas Cowboys. He could tell you every fact about the Cowboys, he was their number one fan!

Russell will be dearly missed and always remembered. A Celebration of Life for Russell will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, June 29th, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church.

Sheryl Carr-Duke

Sheryl Carr Duke, 61, of San Angelo, moved to her heavenly home on June 18, 2024. 

She was born on August 29, 1962, in San Angelo, to William Robert Carr and Joyce Evelyn Smith. She grew up alongside her three sisters; Annette, Sandy and Nikki. She attended Central High School, got married and had two sons. Anthony Joseph Duke, Jr. and Michael Brandon Duke. She soon found herself caring for her two boys on her own and filed for divorce. She raised them in faith, as a member of Bible Baptist Church and reading the Bible to them every night. She supported them by working various jobs until she started her own business, cleaning houses. 

In 1994, she and her boys became members of Victory Bible Baptist Church, where they all became a part of the ministry, with Sheryl serving by teaching in the children’s church, singing in the choir and going with the ladies to prayer meetings and visitation. She also supported her sons as they became song leaders, preacher boys, youth leaders and soul winners; eventually sending them to teach bible clubs with Gospel Ministries to Children in San Angelo and various cities around Texas. 

In 2004, she was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent surgery and a year of treatment to overcome it. It was one of the most difficult periods of her life to that point but she overcame it with grace, by faith and through lots of prayer. 

In 2006, she became a grandmother with the birth of MaKenna Elise Duke, followed by Addison Lynn Duke-Phelps in 2007, Aaiden Michael Ray Duke in 2012, Aleah Renee Duke in 2013 and Cayleigh Rae Duke in 2017. Through these years, she loved and brought her grandchildren up in the same way she had raised her sons: In the light of the word of God and the love of a church family at Harvest Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her passing on June 18, 2024. 

Sheryl was truly dedicated to God and her family. She will always be remembered for her love, care and service to others, her smile and good humor, the sacrifices she made and the prayers she sent up on behalf of those she loved. 

Sheryl is survived by her parents, Bob and Joyce Carr, her sisters, Annette Fisher, Nikki Carr and Sandy Goodnight, her sons, Anthony and Brandon Duke, her grandchildren MaKenna, Addison, Aaiden, Aleah and Cayleigh. 

A viewing will be held at Johnson’s Funeral Home on June 26, from 3-7 pm.

Memorial Services will be held at Harvest Baptist Church at 11:00 am on June 27, 2024.
