JoAnn Palmer

10/20/2021 - 08:45 , by TKing09

JoAnn (Feist) Palmer, 89, of San Angelo passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2021 in her home surrounded by her loved ones. JoAnn was born on October 23, 1931, in San Angelo, Texas to Andrew and Leona Feist Sr. She grew up in Wall, Texas working hard on the farm with her family.

On August 8, 1949 she married the love of her life, Wilbert (PA) Palmer in the St. Ambrose Catholic church in Wall, TX. JoAnn loved going dancing any chance she had while dragging PA along with her whether he wanted to or not! They moved to Sheffield where PA worked on a ranch for many years while raising their family. When the children left for school, JoAnn would get a pillowcase, saddle up her horse and headed out looking for arrowheads. During her time on the ranch, she became an avid arrowhead hunter. PA enjoyed chipping flint he found into arrowheads and tossing them out on the ranch for JoAnn to find. When JoAnn would find one of PA’s arrowheads, she knew that the girls had been tossing them out in front of her. In the later years on the ranch the family enjoyed exploring caves and sifting for Indian artifacts. When the family moved to San Angelo, JoAnn became a member of the Concho Valley Archeological Society where her and Wanda participated in many digs.

JoAnn was a great cook and she always had something sweet to eat. People enjoyed stopping by for a visit and some of her home cooked food. If you couldn’t find her all you had to do was listen for her. She was always humming or singing, mainly while she was cooking and baking.

She was a believer in hard work and instilled that value into her children. She was proud of the things they had, and she worked to keep everything neat and organized. JoAnn believed in her children getting a good education and helping them when they needed it. She expected not only her children to do good in school and work hard but her grandchildren and great grandchildren too. In her pastime she loved to read westerns and write poems. Some of the poetry she wrote were for family birthdays, our beloved pets that passed away and, on the digs, she helped with at Fort Concho.

She was an active member of the Catholic church where they attended as a family. She taught her children about faith and the importance of being a part of the church. She always volunteered to help with the church festivals.

When grandchildren or great grandchildren would come for a visit, she would show them her arrowhead collections and tell stories about them. She loved sharing stories of her life and how things used to be. She loved taking pictures. She always had a camera in her hand. She was not the best photographer because in most of her pictures she cut your head off. She always had baked treats, from chocolate pudding, cookies to her famous cinnamon rolls, that she would send home with them.

She is preceded in death by her husband Wilbert (PA) Palmer, parents Andrew and Leona Feist Sr., brother Andrew Feist Jr., sister Mary Ruth Mees (Lynn), brother-in-law Leslie Smith, son-in-law Roy Gene Lloyd. She is survived by her sister Wanda Smith of San Angelo, sister-in-law Lloma Feist of Midland, daughter Elane (Nicki) Palmer of San Angelo, son Wayne Palmer (Kathy) of Sundown, daughter Melissa Lloyd of Eldorado; grandchildren: Catherine (Seth) Becker, Tabitha (Chris) Lipham, Mitzi (Colby) Miller and Cody (Elizabeth) Palmer; great grandchildren: Cooper Becker, Chloe Becker, Sadie Becker, Preston Lipham, Harrison Lipham, Lane Miller, Ella Miller, Max Miller, Carlyle Palmer and Wyatt Palmer.

Visitation will be held at Harper Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 19th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A Rosary Service will be held at Harper Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 19th at 6:00 p.m. The mass will be held at Holy Angels Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at St. Ambrose Cemetery in Wall, Texas.

Pallbearers for the service are Seth Becker, Chris Lipham, Colby Miller, Cody Palmer, Kerry Stewart and Mike Wood. Honorary Pallbearers are Cooper Becker, Harrison Lipham, Preston Lipham, Lane Miller, Max Miller and Wyatt Palmer.

The family would like to thank Hospice of San Angelo for the amazing care of JoAnn during her last stage of life.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Catholic Outreach Services, Meals for the Elderly or a charity of your, choice

Dr. Richard "Rick" Michael McGraw

10/18/2021 - 20:00 , by TKing09

Dr. Richard (“Rick”) Michael McGraw, 74, shed his earthen vessel on Friday, October 15, 2021. His heart knew no stranger, and the depths of his compassion held no bottom. Dr. McGraw’s positive and profound influence will resonate throughout the universe and across dimensions yet-to-be explored.

On January 26, 1947, Rick was born to Richard McGraw and Mary Vara in San Antonio, Texas. The discrimination Rick experienced as a child committed him to embarking upon a lifelong crusade as a champion for the downtrodden and dispossessed, whether their plight was due to the color of their skin, the clothes they wore, or their intellectual capacity (to name a few). Rick’s sense of morality was unshakeable and unrelenting, and all who knew him benefitted from his unparalleled empathy and character. Rick had a quiet, measured way of asking questions that led people to find their own way back to their Path. Rick was a source of wisdom for so many in the communities he touched, and a guiding light for those who knew him.

Rick was also a self-taught, multi-instrumentalist, and it was in Music that he connected to God. Rick’s love of Music began as a child when his mother bought him an accordion. His relationship to and with Music only strengthened into adulthood, as he shared his love for Music with his children. Until the end of his life, Rick was playing several instruments in a local band, finding immeasurable joy in creating and collaborating with friends. The Chicken Farm Art Center in San Angelo was Rick’s gentle harbor, and the friendships he formed with the Chicken Pickers were his salvation in the darkest moments of his life following his son’s passing.

A devout Roman Catholic, Rick’s passion for the Church was reflected in his decades of support to the Catholic Diocese of San Angelo and the Mount Carmel Hermitage in Christoval, Texas.

Rick’s humble beginnings did not slow his hunger for education and scholarship. Rick graduated high school in Killeen, Texas, and then joined the Army. After his service ended, he attended the University of North Texas, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Education and graduated magna cum laude. He went on to earn his Master of Science in Gen-Experimental Psychology from UNT, and three years later, his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, also from UNT. During his time in Denton, Texas, he played in the Texas Blizzard, Rick’s beloved band of heathens who became lifelong friends and allies. Rick then served in the United States Air Force, where he earned the rank of Major. Rick met his wife of 35 years, Lee Morrison-McGraw, on internship in Wichita, Kansas. Rick’s service brought him and the One He Loved to Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, where they started a practice and grew their family, which he held closest to his heart and cherished with every fiber of his being.

Rick is preceded in death by his son, Evan Michael McGraw, and his parents, Richard and Mary Louise McGraw.

Rick is survived by his adoring wife, Lee Morrison-McGraw, whom he lovingly referred to as Lucy, his four beloved children, Caryn McGraw-Turner, Ryan McGraw, Lauren McGraw, and Carissa McGraw-Gardner, his loving siblings, Lily Williams and Robert McGraw, his nine darling grandchildren, Jayden Gardner, Kailyn Gardner, Londyn Gardner, Brendan Faulk, Talon Parker, Ethan Parker, Evan McGraw, Grason McGraw, and Liam McGraw, his dear sons-in-law, Brent Turner and Donald Gardner, cherished extended family, and countless treasured colleagues, friends, and bandmates. Rick was loved by so many because he was so easy to love.

There are those who cannot seem to give, and there are those whose lifeblood is generosity. At his core, Rick was a man of inexhaustible charity. Rick felt and honored in himself a sense of moral obligation to give, whether monetarily, emotionally, intellectually, or spiritually, often at the expense of his own needs. Rick had healing hands.

Rick served in many roles throughout his storied career, including but not limited to: member of the Shannon Hospital Ethics Committee for more than 20 years; President of the Psychological Association of Greater West Texas; Board Member and President of the Texas Psychological Association (TPA); Chair of several TPA Committees, including Political Action, Social Justice, and Integrated Health Care; TPA Representative to American Psychological Association (APA); Chair of the APA Committee on Rural Health; cherished member of the APA Board of Directors; and member of the APA Board of Directors Ethics Subcommittee. Rick’s mentorships and teachings will forever echo in the hearts of those who received them. Rick was awarded for his service in the field of psychology repeatedly, including but not limited to TPA’s Psychologist of the Year Award in 2011 and the TPA Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

His leadership in elevating the cause of social justice, increasing access to healthcare, and steering the ethical course for so many organizations and individuals across the country are his legacy. May we honor Rick by honoring the Calls of our own hearts, defending the defenseless, and finding the courage to be compassionate and charitable, especially when the task is difficult.

Rick was larger than life. He was a special man to all who knew him, and his family was daily witness to his loving dedication and generous spirit. The iconoclasm of the Seeker and the unconventionality of the Leader were his essence.

A Rosary Service will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, October 22, 2021, at Holy Angels Catholic Church.

Keifer Alan Ekert

10/18/2021 - 19:56 , by TKing09

Keifer Alan Ekert was born to parents Sara Thompson and Jerry Ekert on December 9, 1992 in San Angelo, Texas. He was part of a large extended family that always found a reason for gatherings and celebrations. The Ekert home was where neighboring kids hung out and if you were a "friend" you also became "family."

Keifer's magnetic personality was evident early on as throughout his school years-everyone knew him as the “cool kid.”

After graduating San Angelo Central High School in 2011, Keifer would work a variety of jobs including but not limited to security detail, the food and beverage service industry, and auto body paint and repair. His deep seeded love for music would later land him at The Art Institute of Dallas where he worked towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Audio production.

Upon his return to San Angelo, Keifer worked at Fuzzy’s Tacos feeling right at home with his “Taco Mom” Teresa. Most recently, he worked at Giz & Hums comfortably mastering his culinary and beverage preparation skills.

He loved all kinds of music like Limp Bizkit and Blink 182 but the heavy metal genre just flowed through his veins. One friend remembered that he was "the first kid in our school who wore a Nine Inch Nails shirt on school property," referencing his daring and innovative side. Many times after work, Keifer would meet up with friends and play his guitar for long hours into the morning just chillin’ and enjoying the vibe. He would feel the music and be seen strumming as if he had guitar in hand. He was the real deal who donned the dreads, piercings and gauges and supported local up and coming bands. One of his favorite quotes was from artist Aaron Lewis who said "the biggest things in life are your friends and family. I like my jeans and my old t-shirts and a couple pounds never really hurts cause a country boy is all I'll ever be."

On Friday, October 15, 2021, Keifer passed at the age of 28 due to complications following a motorcycle accident in July.

We take great comfort knowing he is no longer in any pain, once again made whole, and sitting at the right hand of God along with his beloved Pit Bull “Hades” who also recently passed.

Social media has been flooded remembering Keifer as “a great soul who will fly high;” was kind, caring, talented, loving, and will be remembered for their long lasting friendships.
Keifer is survived by his parents Jerry Ekert and Cindy Bussell of San Angelo, Grandma Terry Ekert, siblings Joey and Justin Norwood and Olivia Zapote.

Funeral arrangements are as follows: visitation will be Wednesday October 20, 2021 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at Harper Funeral Home, 2606 Southland Blvd, San Angelo. The service will be Thursday October 21 at 11:00 am with Keifers last ride being escorted by numerous bikers who loved and respected him with their whole heart to Lawnhaven Cemetary at 4989 Fm 1223, San Angelo (by the base). Honorary pallbearers are as follows: Zach Bishop, Durty Sanchez, Tyler Blanchard, Keegan Nixon, Jimmy Farr, and Mikey Childress.

From the words of the great guitarist/lyricist Dave Mustaine:
“So as you read this know my friends, I'd love to stay with you all. Please smile when you think of me
My body's gone that's all.
À tout le monde [To all the world]
À tout mes amis [To all my friends]
Je vous aime [I love you]
Je dois partir [I have to leave]
These are the last words
I'll ever speak
And they'll set me free”

The immediate family would like to thank the first responders, hospital staff, and those who went above and beyond to organize fundraisers to assist in his care.
