Loyd White

02/15/2024 - 10:03 , by TKing09

Loyd Burton "Popper" White, 87, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2024, in San Angelo.

Please join family and friends for a remembrance of life service at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Pastor Russ Frazier, pastor of Forgiven Ministries Biker Church, officiating. Military honors will be afforded by the Goodfellow Honor Guard Team. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Loyd Burton White "Popper" was born December 28,1936 in Slaton to L.G. "Glenard" White & Lona Faye "Jo" Townsend White. The oldest of four children, he spent his childhood in and around Slaton, where he worked on his grandparent's cotton farm. The family left Slaton for Bakersfield, California in 1952. After graduating high school, Loyd spent a brief time in college before joining the United States Air Force.

During his time in the Air Force, stationed at Barksdale AFB Louisiana, he met the love of his life, Joe Ann "Jody" Faust. The two were married on December 17, 1956. The couple had three children while living in Louisiana, Sandra Ann, Loyd Burton, II, and Rhonda Joy. The family led an adventurous life, getting to travel the world, living in places like Germany, Taiwan & the Philippines. Loyd was also a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. During their travels to different duty stations, the family made many lifelong friends, who became more like family over the years. Loyd and Joe Ann decided to retire to San Angelo. Loyd held several jobs after his initial retirement, such as a security guard, jailor for Tom Green County and finally working back at Goodfellow Air Force Base for AAFES. His final job was as a grocery bagger at the commissary where he finally retired again in 2017.

Popper was a cowboy at heart who loved country music and horses. He was quick with a smile and a story and never missed a chance to stop and talk to a stranger or help a person in need. He also never missed a chance to rummage through a base dumpster to find treasures where others only saw trash. Popper was special to everyone who met him, and he showed the people in his life love through small acts, either through kind words or small treats, like peppermints in his pockets. He showed the world that it is the little things that really do matter. Family gatherings with Popper were always made special with his famous char-grilled ribs, complete with colorful commentary from the chef and a story and a cold beer after the meal.

Popper passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family and friends on February 10, 2024. Loyd was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a brother, Gene White and wife Marjorie. He is survived by his sister, Sue Cierley; and brother, Don White and wife Dona, all of Bakersfield, California. Loyd is also survived by his three children and their families, Sandra White Meyers and spouse, Steven of Elizabeth, Colorado, Loyd B. "Burt" White and spouse Kimberly of Merrimack, New Hampshire, and Rhonda Butler of San Angelo. Loyd also leaves behind a legacy of seven grandchildren, Shatzie Meyers Wardall and husband Mark, Loyd Daniel Butler and wife Leslie, Kelly Butler and wife Ashley, Molly Butler Mitchum and husband Melvin, Shayne and Michelle Meyers, Michael White and wife Katelyn and Jonathon White; and eleven great grandchildren, Ayslynn, Cayden, Torin and Mathew Wardall, Evalynn and Xandra Meyers, Raegan and Bax Butler, Emersyn Baker, and Sequoia and Anna Butler; along with many other "adopted" children and grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mary Ruth Waldrep

02/15/2024 - 10:01 , by TKing09

Mary Ruth Sizemore Waldrep was born on August 17th, 1927. She passed away in her home on Monday, February 12th, 2024. A lot of things happened between these two dates.

Mary Ruth was the only child of Ted and Alice Sizemore. She was born at her grandparents’ home in Tioga, Texas. They were a strong family and had deep roots in faith, hope and the love for the Lord. Her father worked for General Foods and they moved often managing the Oklahoma and Arkansas area. Wherever they lived, they found a church home. At the age of eight, she made her profession of faith at the First Baptist Church of McAlister, Oklahoma.

Ruthie was the first chair clarinet in her high school All-Girl Band in Lawton, Oklahoma. They marched in many parades. When the Second World War began, she and her schoolmates collected metal to be used for bullets to help the boys fighting in Europe and the Atlantic.

She graduated high school in December and enrolled at Oklahoma A&M University in January 1945. Ruthie joined the pledge class of a brand-new sorority called Alpha Chi Omega. She was promptly elected Pledge Class President. The next year, she became the first president of the new sorority. Most recently she spoke at the sorority’s 70th Anniversary Party. Two years ago in 2022, she spoke at the 75th Gala. She is something of a legend for that sorority.

In the Fall of 1946, she met Bob Waldrep at the Welcome Dance on campus. When this decorated veteran saw the cutest blonde ever dancing with some “guy”, he immediately cut in and asked her to dance. They married in 1949, one month after they graduated.

In1953, they delightedly adopted a four-day old baby boy. When little Jimmy was five, they adopted David (4 ½) and his sister, Becky (6). They were just settling into being a family of five when Ruth began feeling unusually fatigued. Eight months later Dana was born.

Bob worked for the Apollo Paper Company in Houston, Texas. Ruth took a job at Dana’s high school where she was quite favored by students and faculty. When Dana graduated, Ruth took a job at Houston’s First Baptist Church where she worked nearly 14 years. She loved those years being able to serve people and the Lord.

In 1993, they retired to San Angelo, Texas where they remained dedicated to their God, their family, and their church. Bob passed away in 2015.

She is survived by their children, Jim Waldrep (wife Peggy), Becky Woodall, David Waldrep, Sr., and Dana Dickens (husband Jay); grandchildren, Steven Woodall (wife Cristina), Jennifer Woodall, Amy Papadimitriou (husband Nick), Brandon Woodall (wife Allison), Angela Hawkins (husband Shane); David Alan Waldrep, Deborah Kay Waldrep; Jason Dickens (wife Karlyn), and Kennen Dickens; currently there are 16 great grandchildren (plus numerous dogs, cats, and horses).

Louis Edward Rork

02/15/2024 - 09:54 , by TKing09

Louis Edward Rork passed away on February 10, 2024, after a long battle with Multiple System Atrophy. Louis was born in San Angelo, Texas on February 19, 1946 to Hallie Mae Terry and Robert Louis Rork. His family included older brother Bob and younger brother Bill. While Louis was very young, they lived in several oil and gas towns in West Texas before settling in San Angelo in 1953.

Louis loved his hometown of San Angelo, where he lived most of his life. He made scores of life-long friends including those who would later introduce him to his future wife, Kay, along with her daughters Jana and Channing.

Louis graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1964 and the University of Texas at Austin in 1968. He worked for many years in the oil and gas business with his friend and mentor Jack Bleakley and later developed a real estate career. Though Louis contributed his time and talents to many civic and arts organizations in the San Angelo area and his beloved Emmanuel Episcopal Church, he spent countless hours studying and collecting art, antiques, and fine jewelry. He shared these passions with Kay, with whom he had a successful antique and estate sale business.

Though Louis treasured the beautiful objects he collected over the years, it was his friendships he cherished most, many of which began in his earliest years of life. He and his childhood friends grew up together like an extended family, celebrating life’s most significant events, supporting each other through times of challenge and simply enjoying each other’s company. Louis’s friends recall the escapades they had as boys and young men, especially dove hunting outside of town and eating at Zentner’s steak house. His circle of good friends grew over the years to include the Tuesday “lunch bunch,” the crew of men who traveled to Mason for the annual Spring Turkey Hunt, and their monthly supper group.

Louis loved to cook and entertain. He enjoyed parties and social gatherings. Friends and family could always pick Louis out of a crowd, not just because of his large stature, but because he loved to tell a good story and was frequently holding court. He had a quick wit, a dry sense of humor, and strong opinions about almost everything! Louis softened immediately upon the sight or mention of anyone’s grandchildren—particularly his own. His girls loved to watch him dote on his grandchildren about whom he always had several funny and sweet stories to share.

Louis loved and was loved by many, but first and foremost, he adored Kay—his wife and constant companion of over forty-five years. He depended on her greatly and fretted when she happened to be out of town, claiming he couldn’t sleep or rest without her. They had the same interests, enjoyed going out with their friends, traveling, and worked on countless projects together around the house.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Hallie and Robert Rork, and his brothers Robert and William Rork. Louis is survived by his wife Kay Gilley Rork; his daughter Jana Burk, and her children Paul and Genevieve; his daughter Channing and husband Rick, and their children Benjamin and Alexander Bushnell; his sister-in-law Linda Rork and nephews Jon and wife Molly Dickson, Patrick and wife Jill Rork, and niece Sharon and husband Joey Schwab, and their children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held for Louis at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Fort Concho, West Texas Rehab, or a charity of your choice
