Jacqueline Lois Shannon

04/21/2023 - 15:14 , by TKing09

Jacqueline Lois Ferry Shannon passed away at her San Angelo home on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at the age of 89.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 22, 2023 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Jackie Shannon, who was the daughter of the late Joseph J. Ferry and Elizabeth Keane Ferry, was born on February 20, 1933, at an Army post near Chicago, but her family relocated to Texas when she was a toddler. After living in both Dallas and San Antonio, she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio in 1950 and earned her bachelor's degree from Trinity University in 1953. She later earned a master's degree in Education from Angelo State University.

While at Trinity, she met the love of her life, Charley Harriss Shannon. They married in June 1953 and were married for over 48 years until his passing in April 2002.

Following her move to San Angelo in 1968, she was an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where she served on almost every committee at some point and made life-long friends with members of her Sunday School class.

Jackie was a dedicated, caring elementary school teacher for over three decades in San Antonio, Edna, Austin, and San Angelo. After her younger son, the late Gregory Paul Shannon, was diagnosed and treated for a serious mental illness, Jackie retired from teaching while still in her 50s to become a full-time volunteer advocate and champion for people with mental illness and their families.

Jackie was determined, passionate, and tireless in her efforts to improve the lives of individuals with mental illness, not just in San Angelo, but across Texas and the nation.

Jackie and her husband Charley established the San Angelo affiliate of NAMI - the National Alliance on Mental Illness - in the mid-1980s. In addition to serving as President of the San Angelo chapter, Jackie later served on the board and as President of NAMI-Texas (the statewide organization), and three terms as President of NAMI's national Board of Directors. She also served for over two decades as a trustee on the Board of MHMR Services for the Concho Valley, including several terms as Chair. She was the longest-tenured trustee to serve in the Center's history.

Jackie also served on various community and state councils that improved mental health policy, including the Texas Council on Offenders with Mental Impairments, the Texas Mental Health Planning Advisory Council, and the Citizens' Advisory and Planning Committee of the former Texas Department of MHMR. In her NAMI leadership roles, she successfully worked with elected officials from both parties to secure passage of important legislation that helped create parity in insurance coverage for the treatment of serious mental illness.

She was preceded in death by her younger son, Gregory Paul Shannon in 2016.

Jackie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Jeannine Shannon of Lubbock; her granddaughter and her husband, Julia and Jack Driscoll of Bloomington, Indiana; and brother and sister-in-law, David and Darleen Ferry of Phoenix, Arizona, their daughters Lara and Linda, and their families.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to NAMI, PO Box 49104, Baltimore, MD 21297; NAMI-Texas, PO Box 300817, Austin, TX 78703-0014; or a favorite charity.

Khloe Raelyn Salazar-Gloria

04/21/2023 - 15:11 , by TKing09

Our beautiful girl, Khloe Raelyn Salazar-Gloria, gained her wings on April 17, 2023 surrounded by all of her loved ones at home.

Public viewing will be from 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with a prayer service at 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday at the House of Jireh with pastor Rob Wisdom, officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Khloe was born January 5, 2016 to Hector Gloria and Natalie Salazar. Khloe was always so full of life and smiles but was a little feisty one with lots of sass. She loved family and loved adventures. She was diagnosed at the early age of 4 with a terminal disease called Juvenile Huntington's. Though this horrific disease took everything from her, she still smiled her contagious smile. She was fighter till the end of her little life. She now can run up in Heaven with all her loved ones.

Preceded in death by her great grandfather, Amador Salazar, Sr.; grandmother, Melody Gloria; three uncles, baby Mario, Jacob Hernandez and Amador Salazar, Jr.; cousin, Isreal Galindo.

Khloe leaves behind her parents, Natalie Salazar and Hector Gloria; her little sister, Ari Gloria; grandparents, Carol "Wiggy" Salazar, Mario "Pa" Salazar; great-grandma, Ubaldina Salazar; great grand parents, Gus "Granpy" Constancio and Kay "Nana" Constancio; her uncle, Justin Salazar. Khloe had many aunts, uncles and cousins, she loved each and everyone of them. They made her laugh and enjoy life. She was loved by many and left a very lasting impression on you. She looked forward to spending time with each one of them.

Though you have left us here, your presence will always be felt...Fly high baby girl.

Pallbearers will be Justin Salazar, Junior Bedolla, George Reyes, Ryan Galindo, Jorge Morales, and Dustin Nguyen.

Flowers lay on the sandy beach for a precious 7-year-old,
As the sands of time has now passed.

Khloe loved the ocean water.
She felt the most alive when surrounded by the sea.

The water can be a healing power,
-it gave her great joy to feel the waves.
As the waves rushed to meet her, the sand melted her pain away.

Yet on Land, her life was like the ebb and flow.
Sometimes the water was calm.
Sometimes the undercurrent brought her down.

Yet, like the waves, her fears were washed away,
And her smile was as bright as a sunny day.

Our tears of salt are a reminder
Of how quickly the sea takes our loved one away.

The tide recedes,
But leaves behind
Bright seashells on the beach for Natalie and Hector to always remember,
Khloe's memories will never go away.

Khloe stood on the seashore one last time, waiting for her Lord to come.

Gentle waves washed her footprints away, as Jesus took her home to stay.

Charlotte Long Sebesta

04/21/2023 - 14:51 , by TKing09

Charlotte Long Sebesta, 64, of San Angelo, TX, passed away on April18, 2023 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Charlotte was born on July 8, 1958 to Charles and Faye Long in San Angelo, TX. After graduating from Lakeview High School, she went on to study nursing. She decided she was better fit in a supportive medical role and became a medical transcriptionist; she stayed in that position for over 30 years. She also briefly taught classes for medical transcription at Howard College. After retiring from medical transcription, Charlotte went back to school to receive her Pharmacy Technician certification. After receiving her certification, she worked in the pharmacy at the San Angelo State Supported Living Center for a few years. She retired in 2019.

In 1978, Charlotte met her husband Charlie at Eagles Pool Hall in San Angelo, TX. They went on to get married in 1980. Charlotte and Charlie went on to have two children, Cortney and Callie. She loved taking her girls on as many adventures as possible. She took them to Disney World, family reunions in Colorado, and New York City. If she wasn’t taking them all over the country, she was taking them for a quick weekend trip to Dallas or San Antonio just to get away or to go shopping.

Charlotte loved to travel and spend time with her family. Her favorite travel destination was Colorado. She traveled there every other year to go to her family reunions to spend time with her extended family and escape the Texas summer heat! She also enjoyed traveling abroad. Her favorite place she traveled was Rome, Italy. There she got to attend an Easter Sunday Service at the Vatican, which she spoke of fondly. Another of her favorite trips was the cruise she took to the Caribbean with her husband, Charlie.

Charlotte can also be remembered for not being just Cortney’s and Callie’s mom, but for being everyone’s mom, Mama Charlotte. She was Mimi to her grandbabies. She was a mom to anyone who needed one. She always took care of everyone before she took care of herself.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her father Charlie, mother Faye, and son Cameron. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Charlie, her daughter Cortney and her husband Michael, her daughter Callie, and her husband Justin and three children Chase, Maci, and Eden. Fred David Book

04/20/2023 - 17:42 , by live

Fred David Book, 73, of Miles, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 in San Angelo. The rosary will be 6:30 P.M., Thursday and Funeral Mass will be 3:00 P.M., Friday, April 21, 2023 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles, TX. The burial will follow at Miles Cemetery, and all of Freddy’s friends are invited to join the family at the ensuing BBQ being held at the Miles Young Farmers Show Complex.

Fred was born to Felix and Anita Book on September 10, 1949, in San Angelo, Texas. He married Vivian Corrine Griffin on April 7th, 1979, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law John Sferes, brother-in-law John Wilde, and nephew Paul Book.

Fred was a lifelong farmer and rancher growing up on the Book family farm north of San Angelo and moved to Miles in 1979. During the Vietnam Conflict, Fred served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard. Throughout his life, Fred farmed and ranched in Tom Green, Runnels, and McCulloch County. Fred was active in the farming community all over the Concho Valley participating in numerous benefits over the years as an auctioneer and spotter. When it came time for the community to return the favor to Fred for his heart transplant in 2001, the family was overwhelmed by all of the support showered upon them.

Raised on the farm in a family of 10 children, Fred was part of a tight knit group of siblings that learned how to keep each other company for the rest of their lives. All of Fred’s siblings knew that if they wanted to create mischief, Fred and his smile would have to be included.

He was an active player in daily domino games, card games, and any other random games of skill, winning multiple championships over the years. Through the years Fred enjoyed spending time with his family and was especially entertained when life dealt him a second round of grandkids almost a decade after the first round. All who met Fred will recall his signature grin that led to making friends everywhere he went. Fred’s grin was such an indelible feature that the signature smirk would even cause him trouble with the nuns at Sacred Heart Catholic School and drill instructors during basic training.

Fred is survived by Vivian, his wife of forty-four years; his children, Kendra Gully, of Miles, Anita and Shawn Poynor, of San Angelo, Neal and Ana Book, of Laredo; his grandchildren, Kory Gully, Carolynn Eichler, David Poynor, Dylan Poynor, Kenedee Gully, Kash Gray, Barrett Book, Evelyn Poynor, and Brady Book.

Pallbearers will be Kory Gully, David Poynor, Dylan Poynor, Kyle Book, Casey McCartney, and Max Kerley

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the building fund for St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles, TX.

Myrtle Louise Wilkerson

04/20/2023 - 13:43 , by live

Myrtle Louise Wilkerson went home to be with the Lord on April 13, 2023, having lived on earth for 100 years, 8 months and 4 days. She was born on August 9, 1922 in Santa Paula, California, to Homer Richards and Adeline Viola (Hatcher) Aten. Her mother passed away when Myrtle was only 5 years old, and she grew up with various aunts, uncles and relatives. She worked several jobs during her high school career. Once, when Myrtle was 18 years old, she worked as a waitress in Ojai, California, and she waited on a young child actress who was celebrating her 13th birthday, Shirley Temple.

Myrtle graduated from Ventura Junior College twice, once at Grade 12 and again with her Associate Degree two years later. Myrtle then served a two-year stint in the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES) in the Navy during World War 2. It was during this time of voluntary service that she met Merritt Wilkerson, a boatswain’s mate in the Navy. They married on June 1, 1945 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Merritt and Myrtle lived the first years of their marriage in Tucson, Arizona, where Merritt worked as an evangelist. They moved to Deming, New Mexico, and started a flower shop and nursery business in 1956, where they worked until their retirement in 1976. During the early years in Deming Myrtle also worked in a doctor’s office. Because she tried to help everyone cure their ailments, she was given the nickname, “Little Doc”. She lived up to that nickname the rest of her life. In 1979 Merritt and Myrtle moved to San Angelo, Texas where Merritt continued his church work until his death in December 1995.

To their marriage were born two sons. Paul Wilkerson, and wife Karen, of San Angelo; and David Wilkerson, of Cebu, Philippines. Grandchildren are Amy Wilkerson, Johanna Winner and husband John, Jonathan Wilkerson and wife Lindsay, Matthew Wilkerson and wife Nana, Sam Wilkerson and Jay Wilkerson. Myrtle is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren: Lucy, Lily, Jack, Slate Madelyn, Steele, Cove, Jaden, Brayden, Maya, Valerie and Leah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Edward Lawrence Aten, and her husband, Merritt Mecham Wilkerson.

Myrtle was a member of the 19th Street Church of Christ, and faithfully served in the church for 76 years. She was a beautiful example of charity and care, and would volunteer to worry about almost everyone. The family is grateful to all the care givers that attended to Myrtle during her last seven years of life. We are especially thankful for the dedication and sacrifice of Ms. Audrey Crabtree.

The graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Fairmount Cemetery on Ave. N in San Angelo. A memorial service will be held following the graveside service at 11:30 am at the 19th Street Church of Christ, 86 E. 19th Street, San Angelo, Texas.
