Pastor David L. Smith

01/16/2024 - 09:11 , by TKing09

David Larkin Smith was born in Modesto, California to Larkin and Bonnie Smith on March 27th, 1946 and he went to be with the Lord on January 13th, 2024 at the age of 77 in San Angelo, Texas.

David was truly a “friend of God” as he served his Lord faithfully, with his wife Gaynell for over 50 years in ministry. They celebrated 54 years of marriage in September of last year. Together they founded Word of Life over 40 years ago and before that, they served as youth pastors at First Assembly of God in San Angelo, Texas.

David served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in the Philippines. While there, he saw a picture of Gaynell in another man’s locker and inquired about her. He learned her name was Gaynell Park and she lived in San Angelo, Texas. Shortly after this, the will of God brought David to Goodfellow AFB and he promptly found Gaynell and proceeded to win her heart, her love and ultimately her hand in marriage. God had a plan for these two and David knew a good thing when he saw it! They married in 1969 and had two sons, David “DJ” and Jason that were the joy of their life.

David loved to tease people and he loved to laugh and have a good time. He loved sports and enjoyed watching the games with his buddies, DJ and Jason. David loved to preach and minister to the people of God. He devoted his life to being a true shepherd. He loved God and fed his sheep and his lambs. Truth, sound doctrine was everything to him.

David loved to travel with Gaynell and he especially loved “cruising.” They were also blessed to go to Israel twice, which was life-changing to both of them. Wherever they went, they loved and prayed for people and made life-long friends.

David loved to read, study, and pray. He loved the Word of God and the gifts and moving of the Holy Spirit. He always welcomed the Holy Spirit and made a place for Him to move in the church services. The Holy Spirit never failed to show up and amaze us! We have had so many precious and powerful times at the altars of Word of Life! Lives forever changed because of David’s love and faithfulness to God!

Over the course of David’s life in ministry, he has preached in the neighborhood of 6000 messages, performed countless weddings, funerals, water baptisms and baby dedications. Through thousands of altar calls, countless souls were saved, healed, delivered and filled with the Holy Spirit. David went wherever people were hurting and needing Jesus. He was known by name in local hospitals, nursing homes and jails throughout San Angelo. He was known by his love! What a “Legacy of Love” he has left for us to continue in honor of him and Jesus!

In addition to his Parents, Larkin and Bonnie Smith, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Reverend H.P. and Louise Park, his beloved Son, David “DJ” Smith, and Brother-in-Law Don Langum.

David is lovingly remembered by his Wife, Gaynell, his beloved Son Jason Smith and daughter-in-love Angela, daughter-in-love April Smith, Grandchildren, Gunnar, Sterling, Seth, Kamryn, Ashlin, Addison, and Josh, Sister, Sandy Langum, Brother Gary Park and wife Pam, Nephew, Jeff Langum and wife Sara, Niece Leslie Williams and husband Monty, Becky Langum, Krissy Blex and husband Tony.

There are so many more awesome family members and devoted friends…too many to mention, but you ALL know you were special, loved and prayed for by Pastor David Smith.

We know that he was greeted at Heaven’s Gate by the Lord with His arms wide open, saying, “Well Done, My good and faithful servant”... because he was.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Harper Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Word of Life Assembly of God. The burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers for the service will be Jerry Searcy, David Springer, Billy Frazier, James McWilliams, Buddy Blake and Terry Gauwain. Honorary pallbearers for the service will be Michael Hall, Danny Hall, James Vanover, Lloyd Hablizel, Stephen Whitlock and Dan Springer.

Family and friends may share condolences and sign the online register book at www.harper-funeralhome.com.

Doris Jem (Downey) Dehnel

01/15/2024 - 13:48 , by TKing09

Doris Gem Dehnel (Downey) passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

Doris was born January 28, 1933 at home in Coleman County. She was the youngest of five children born to Patrick Wesley Downey and Fanny Fern Downey (Wilson).

Doris grew up on the family farm and attended school in Mozelle. After graduating in 1950, she enrolled in the Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Angelo, which included classes at San Angelo College (SAC). As a member of the college band, she met Robert Edward Lee Dehnel and they would marry on May 24, 1952 in the chapel at First Baptist Church.

Student nurses were not allowed to be married and thus she would not complete her nursing degree. She would be a housewife and travel with Robert as he worked in road construction around the state. Doris and Robert had 3 children, Robert Jr. "Eddie" born in San Angelo, Charlotte Diane born in El Paso, and Robin LeFern born in Amarillo. In 1970, they would settle in the Grape Creek community. She was a stay-at-home mom until the late 70's at which time she attained her CDL license and drove a school bus for Grape Creek ISD until she retired.

Doris learned a special recipe from Naomi Ditmore (which the family is forever grateful) for how to make "Aunt Doris' divinity". It was always made in large quantities for the Downey New Year family reunion every year in Coleman for over 3 decades. Friends and family were also gifted with its deliciousness.

In April 2004, she earned the title "Mamaw" when her only grandchild, Berit Calais was born and would spend her time doting on her.

Doris is survived by her husband Robert; her son, Eddie; her daughter, Robin and son-in-law Michael Smith; granddaughter, Berit Smith, two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, 13 nieces, and 14 nephews.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Fanny; her brothers and their spouses, Malcolm (Zelma), Glynn (Sing), Sherwood (Jean), and sister, Patsy (Billy), daughter, Charlotte, 6 brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, six nephews, and one niece.

The family would like to thank all those who assisted Doris in the last year of her life: the Shannon nurses, doctors, nurses aides too numerous to name, the wonderful staff at Regency House, the compassionate nurses and staff at Sagecrest and Hospice of San Angelo who made her comfortable until the end, and the employees of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Louis Callaway "Cal" Hengst

01/15/2024 - 10:16 , by TKing09

Cal was born to Margie and Cal Hengst Sr. in El Paso, Texas. Loving husband, father, and grandfather, Cal is survived by the love of his life, Pamela Meador Hengst; three sons, Noel and Brenna Hoff of Big Spring, Texas, Ashley Hoff of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cal and Annie Hengst of Saint Louis, Missouri; 6 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Lelia and Johnny Foster, Marguerite and Jeff Lipton, Lisa and Cecil Lillard; and one incredibly spoiled goldendoodle, Daisy. Cal was a proud graduate of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, class of 1975, where he served as company commander Company L-2 and Lieutenant of the Ross Volunteers - the official Honor Guard of the Governor of Texas.

After graduating from Texas A&M, Cal served his country in the Army as a field artillery officer stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He then returned home to San Angelo to help his father with the family business, Powell Glass & Mirror. Cal was an avid sportsman, traveling nationally for sporting clays tournaments, fishing and hunting trips - often with his lifelong friends Mike McAlpine and Roger Henjum of San Angelo. While Cal rarely landed the biggest fish or bagged the highest limit, he was always the first in line to clean up from the day. Cal loved mentoring youth and was heavily involved in Scouting, serving as Cub Master at Santa Rita Elementary through Assistant Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 363. He hiked 100+ miles through the mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and was honored with Mentor pins at more than a dozen local Eagle Scout ceremonies.

Cal’s family remembers him as a real Texan: he loved his family, watching the deer in Eldorado, a good ribeye, John Wayne, and the Dallas Cowboys. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Cal's favorite local charity, the Eldorado Game Association (PO Box 553, Eldorado, Texas 76936).

A visitation will be held at Harper Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at First Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 10:00 AM.
