Wanda Henrietta Schrader Comstock

12/27/2023 - 10:23 , by TKing09

Wanda Henrietta Schrader Comstock, 100, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away on December 21, 2023. Wanda was a beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great aunt, and friend. Wanda honored God, loyalty, tradition, and education. She was a loving, thoughtful, humorous, strong-willed, and talkative woman. Wanda led a grand, full life, and she will be deeply missed.

Wanda was born on May 21, 1923 to Henry and Jessie Marie (Ferguson) Schrader in Breckenridge, Texas. Wanda grew up in McCamey, Texas, where her father owned a trucking company. Her younger brother, Gene Theodore, was born in 1931. Wanda graduated from McCamey High School in 1940 at the age of 16. She then went to Jolly Beauty School in San Angelo, and she graduated with a beauty operators’ certificate in 1941. Wanda next attended college at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. She graduated in two and a half years with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. While in college, she played alto saxophone in the dance band and enjoyed adventuring in Big Bend National Park. Wanda met her future husband while she was performing at a dance. He was a flight instructor for the Army Air Corps, and he was stationed at the Marfa Army Air Field in nearby Marfa, Texas.

On February 19, 1944, Wanda married Charles “Chick” Harrison Comstock, Jr. in Trinidad, Colorado. Wanda and Chick moved to McCamey, Texas to raise their two sons. William “Bill” Rhys was born in 1945, and John Henry was born in 1947. Wanda was a dedicated mother who always made time for her children. In McCamey, the family enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, and rockhounding along the nearby Pecos River. They also played canasta and poker with dear family friends regularly. Chick worked as a crop duster, car salesman, and TV repairman. Wanda taught third grade at McCamey Elementary School.

In 1962, the family moved to San Angelo, Texas. Wanda continued teaching second and third grade at Alta Loma Elementary School. She worked with children that challenged other teachers, and she often taught summer school. Wanda loved telling stories about her school-teaching days. She fondly remembered many of her students even late into her life. She retired after 35 years of teaching.

Wanda welcomed two daughters-in-law into the family. John married his wife, Johnnie, in 1978, and Bill married his wife, Linda, in 1983. Wanda became a grandmother in 1981 when her granddaughter, Jana Marie (John and Johnnie), was born. A second granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn (Bill and Linda), was born in 1983. Wanda loved being a grandmother, and spent lots of time caring for her granddaughters and spoiling them. During these years, the Comstock family enjoyed time together at a lake house on Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo and at a small family ranch outside of Eden, Texas.

Wanda loved hosting family gatherings, especially for birthdays, weekly Sunday dinners, and Christmas. She cooked big meals for everyone, and her specialties were pot roast, chicken and dumplings, cakes, and pies. Wanda had quite the sweet tooth, and you could always count on a jar of fresh cookies and other sweets at her house.

In 1994, Wanda moved to Rio Concho West retirement community after Chick passed away. She cared for her father full-time once he moved in with her. He lived to be 98; longevity runs in the family. In these later years, Wanda enjoyed country line dancing, volunteering at Fort Concho, participating in social events at Rio Concho West, and working the daily crossword puzzle. She traveled and spent time with life-long best friends and neighbors Fred “Freddie” and Lloyd “Mac” McKinney. She also took many family vacations in the western states with John, Johnnie, and Jana. Wanda was an avid reader and always had a book by her side, especially western fiction novels. Wanda had a passion for all things Western, and she was fascinated by Native American and cowboy history.

Wanda celebrated her 100th birthday this May at The Springs Memory Care facility with friends, family, and caregivers. She was honored by letters of congratulations for becoming a centenarian from the United States President, the Texas Governor, and other local organizations. Her longevity was astounding, and her honors were beyond well-deserved.

Wanda is predeceased by her father, Henry Schrader (1996); mother, Jessie Schrader (1973); husband, Charles “Chick” Comstock (1992); son, William “Bill” Comstock (1997); brother, Gene Schrader (2022); and great-granddaughter, Briella Bennett (2021).

Wanda is survived and lovingly missed by her son John Comstock and wife Johnnie Comstock of San Angelo, Texas; granddaughter Jana Comstock and husband Dustin Bennett of Santa Fe, New Mexico; granddaughter Rebecca Comstock of Big Spring, Texas; great-grandson Kellan Bennett of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and dear nephews and a niece.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Springs Memory Care and Hospice of San Angelo for the kindness and care shown to Wanda.

The Celebration of Life will be on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Harper Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas. A graveside blessing will take place following the service at Fairmount Cemetery.

Shirely Rue Adney Gavit

12/27/2023 - 10:20 , by TKing09

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Rue Gavit, who went to be with the Lord on December 21, 2023, at the age of 83. As a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Shirley modeled kindness, love, beauty and grace throughout her entire life, until her very last moments with us on earth.

Shirley was born May 19, 1940, in Robert Lee, Texas to Oren and Denzel Fletcher. She grew up in San Angelo and attended Lake View High School. She was married to Dan Adney Sr. for 25 years, raising their sons Dan, Rick and John Adney together. As a military family they were stationed at various army bases stateside and a couple of bases in Germany before retiring back to San Angelo. She later married Roger Gavit for 28 years before his passing. Roger was father to James Paul, Pam, Mark, Kelly, and David Gavit. Later in life Shirley and Roger adopted Roger's grandson, Steven Gavit. She was a proud grandmother of numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her devotion to her three boys was unwavering, earning her their deep respect. With the occasional need for discipline of three boys, they never knew when a right hand or hairbrush might be flying their way to keep them in line. The stories that surround Shirley are as numerous as they are endearing; if each person who cherished her were to share a tale, we could spend all day in the memories of a truly incredible woman.

Professionally, Shirley worked as a Real Estate Broker for many years in San Angelo. In retirement she poured her heart into a myriad of artistic endeavors. Her talents were remarkable as she created ceramics, dolls, crochet and quilted blankets, sewn purses, jewelry, acrylic and watercolor paintings, and more. Shirley found joy and companionship in crafting alongside Roger with his woodworking. Together, they transformed their shared love into cherished memories, spending countless weekends at craft fairs. Shirley generously gave her crafts as gifts to friends and family, which will continue to serve as tangible reminders of the love and joy she brought into the lives of so many.

She had a gift for making everyone feel like a friend from the moment they met her. She embraced life and was always eager to join in on any activity or adventure. She loved camping in her RV although it may not have been any further than the USAF Rec Camp or on her daddy's property in Grape Creek.

Shirley is survived by her older sister Anna Belle Dunn and younger brother Randy Fletcher. She is also survived by her closest friend and partner in crime, Virdia Jolley.

Shirley loved to dance, and it's easy to envision her now, gracefully dancing in the arms of Jesus.

The Funeral Service will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Roger officiating. The burial will follow at Robert Lee Cemetery in Robert Lee, TX.

Robert "Bob" Dorsey Barnes

12/22/2023 - 08:53 , by TKing09

Robert Dorsey “Bob” Barnes, passed away on December 17, 2023, from complications of dementia. Bob was born on September 13, 1937, in Denver, Colorado, to Dr. And Mrs. Dorsey King Barnes. Bob and his sister, Sue, grew up in Dallas, and he was in the class of 1955 at Highland Park High School.

Bob graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He then attended Texas A&M, earning a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Entomology in 1963 and 1965, respectively. Bob then taught Biology at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. From public education to higher education, as a student and a professor, Bob made friends who became family, and he remembered them fondly until the day he died.

Bob married Janye Evelyn Barclay on July 1, 1962, in Silsbee, Texas, and they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in 2021, two months before her death. They reared their two daughters, Lisa and Amy, in Corpus Christi and then in San Angelo, Texas. In 1980, Bob came to San Angelo to work for a fraternity brother who was a custom home builder and Bob soon became "the best construction manager with a Ph.D. in Entomology that there ever was!" As such, Bob played a part in the construction of many of the beautiful homes in San Angelo in the 80s and 90s. Bob completed his working years as a Construction Manager for Town & Country Food Stores and retired in 2000 to spend more time with Janye and his three precious grandchildren…and hunting.

Bob was an outdoorsman of the highest order. He loved to fish, and gun hunt, but his true love became bowhunting after killing his first deer with a recurve bow in 1956 at the Vanderstucken Ranch in Sonora, Texas. His love of the outdoors led him on many adventures all over the world. He hunted Plains Game in South Africa, Red Stag in New Zealand, Brown Bear and Elk in New Mexico, Moose and Caribou in Canada, and so many whitetail deer he ran out of wall space to show off his trophies. He fished in Saskatchewan, Interior Mexico, the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Snake River, and all over Texas. He loved to dove hunt down in the Rio Grande Valley, and one of his highlight hunting trips was with the entire family in Cordoba, Argentina, for the ultimate dove hunt, with the family killing more than 4000 doves over a five-day trip.

Once his grandchildren came along, though, he scaled back his personal hunting to ensure that they loved the outdoors and understood the value of the humane harvesting of wild game. All three killed their first deer with their Papa and became proficient with all firearms.

Bob was a proud member of First Methodist Church and the Cheers Sunday School class. He was one of the Do-Dads, who did odd jobs around the church (and also drank coffee, ate donuts, and told stories). He attended Walk to Emmaus #1191 and humbly served on many teams and the Concho Country Emmaus Board. He considered the Walk to Emmaus to be the defining moment in his faith journey and was wearing his Emmaus cross as he fell asleep on earth. He spent most Tuesdays at noon with the God's Guys Emmaus Reunion Group until Janye's and his health kept him from it. He was also instrumental in helping to create the 4H Shooting Sports Club and taught many young men and women to become shooting enthusiasts.

Welcoming Bob to Heaven are his parents; his wife, Janye; his "favorite daughter," Amy Barnes Landon; and family and friends he remembered even to his last days. Left to celebrate his life on Earth are his "favorite daughter," Lisa Barnes Hirschfeld, and her husband, Kendall; his sister, Sue Barnes Wills and her husband, Don; his stepbrothers, John Phalen and George C. Phalen, and their families; his son-in-law, Clint Landon; his grandchildren: Chris & Bonnie Hirschfeld, Amanda Hirschfeld, and Bobby Hirschfeld; cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and many friends-who-are-family.

The family would like to thank The Springs Memory Care, Ginny Fuchs and the staff at Lyndale Senior Living, Hospice of San Angelo, and Drs. Ty Hughston, Raj Cheruku, and Denver Marsh and their staffs.

Honorary Pallbearers are Kendall Hirschfeld, Clint Landon, Dr. Larry Petty, Don Wills, the late Charlie Landon, God’s Guys Reunion Group, and anyone who ever shared a fishing boat or deer blind with Bob.
