Tyler Kenneth Dixon

01/08/2024 - 09:09 , by TKing09

Football. Basketball. Golf. Badminton. He was our sports guy. He counted down the weeks until football season. Every Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, from September to February, you knew he was paying extra for YouTube TV, just for his football. He loved his Dallas Cowboys through all the seasons. Every year was “their year”. And even though they’re still working hard on that, Tyler never loved them any less.

Tyler Kenneth Dixon entered this world on February 18th, 1986 to Cathy and Mike Dixon on Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. Throughout his school years, he was known as the class clown, and everyone’s friend; a reputation that followed him the rest of his life. His mom and dad dragged him all around the USA as he grew up. He’s visited the faces of Mount Rushmore, seen Niagara Falls, built snow tunnels in New York, swam the beaches of Florida, fished the bays of Mississippi, and eventually made Texas his forever home where he shared the best life with all of his family. Tyler always took his role as a big brother seriously….or not. Whether it be going 90mph with his two preteen sisters in the back of his silver Pontiac Sunfire, introducing inappropriate music and Adam Sandler movies, or traumatizing his youngest two sisters with horror movies, he loved his sisters with all his heart.

More than the Dallas Cowboys, he loved his four boys. As compensation for sharing a bathroom with sisters for sixteen years, God blessed him with his four boys. His oldest, Cash, rocked his world and brought out a side of Tyler that became his main mission in life: fatherhood. Soon, Jedidiah followed, and then Owen. Tyler devoted his life to his boys, and recently welcomed his fourth precious boy, Beau; officially solidifying his role of being a boy dad.

Tyler married the love of his life, Danielle in October of 2021. Whether it be going to concerts, being professional food critics, or watching junk TV, Tyler and Danielle loved each other deeply and crammed a lifetime of memories into the two precious years they had together.

Tyler took with him the kindest, most gentle heart. We will forever cherish the years we had with him. His soft, gentle voice, his big brother hugs… and his IT abilities. Who is going to fix our phones now?!

While surrounded by family, Tyler met Jesus face to face on January 3, 2024 at the age of 37. The insatiable, gaping wound he leaves behind is only made whole by knowing he is healed and whole and that we will see him again one day.

Join us in all your Dallas Cowboys gear as we celebrate the beautiful life of Tyler Dixon on Tuesday, January 9th at 10AM at Christoval Baptist Church. Graveside burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. The visitation will be Monday January 8th from 5-7PM at Harper Funeral Home.

In the words of Dave Matthews Band, Ty’s favorite….

“My voice is soft, but oh, my heart roars!”

Donna Kay McBride

01/05/2024 - 14:05 , by TKing09

Donna Kay Gilbert Moorehead McBride, 66, entered her eternal journey on December 31st, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. Donna was born in San Angelo, Texas on October 23rd, 1957 to William Carol Gilbert and Dollie Mae Gilbert. The baby of seven children, she brought an abundance of joy and excitement right from the beginning. Her mesmerizing smile and contagious laugh would absolutely light up a room and set the tone for the day. Protected by her four amazing older brothers, Billy, Donald, Weldon, and Harvey, as well as her dynamic older sister, Nona, Donna soon would become the family jewel and a beacon of light that would help shine the way to many spectacular journeys for the family.

Donna and her mother would create an unbreakable bond after the death of her father that devastated the family when Donna was four years of age. Donna’s siblings and mother would help to create a home for Donna that was full of joy, excitement, and love that would help build Donna into the loving and caring Mom, Granny, and Friend that everyone was drawn to. Inspired by a higher power and internal drive, Donna would begin her two most important careers at 17. The first and most important job, Mom, would start in 1975 with the birth of Stephnie. A single mom, she created a loving environment full of vacations, amazing birthdays with homemade cakes, fishing adventures, and wonderful bedtime stories. Her second job would start at Winn-Dixie where she would start her life-long journey in the grocery business.

Shortly after this time, Donna would meet a young man, Matt Moorehead, whom she would build an amazing family with, a loving home, and share many exciting activities. The two would blend two existing families with Jeni, Amy, and Stephnie and then add Elizabeth and Robert along the way. At the same time, Donna would continue an astonishing career working at Kmart, Food Emporium, and HEB. Her career with HEB would span across 32 years and boy did she leave a mark with the San Angelo Community. Her eye for detail, her gracious heart, and her extreme work ethic would shine through every event that she would cater. Donna would bring life to any party with her charisma and oh how it would shine. Through meals and love for her partners, The Spring Chicken Affair, HEB’s Taste of San Angelo, HEB’s Feast of Sharing, and Catering the San Angelo Premium Sale at the rodeo were just a few events where Donna’s creativity, style, and grace would radiate throughout our community. However, Donna’s ability to put together a team full of HEB partners, build relationships, and make her team feel like family was one of her many gifts.

However, the job that Donna excelled at the most was one that would start on March 1st, 1989 when she started the job know as…“Granny.” Sleepovers, dyeing eggs, making Christmas cookies, and playing dress-up are only a few of the activities and adventures that her grandchildren would be involved in over 34 years. It was during this time she would meet the love of her life, Daniel McBride, also known as Pepaw. Together, Daniel and Donna would go above and beyond for their grandchildren where fun and laughter were of great abundance. Trips to the coast to fish, Disneyland, Florida for bear hunts, Arkansas to zipline and digging for diamonds, and Louisiana for shopping, food and a little time in the casino would create lasting memories that caused her family to build everlasting bonds. The part of this world that Donna would excel in would be birthdays and holidays, with homemade stockings, unique gifts, amazing food and homemade birthday cakes, and parties to make every person feel special and loved. Donna was most definitely the #1 Granny and Mommy.

Donna is survived by her loving husband of 18 years, Daniel McBride; her children, Stephnie and David Holt, Elizabeth and Tim Proctor, Robert and Kendra Moorehead, Christina McBride, Tim and Christian Clyburn, Josh and Emily McBride, Jennifer and Jim Dunn, Amy and Johnny Martin; grandchildren, Mackenzie, Hailey, Brandon, Bailey, Brittany, Brooklyn, Lexie, Madison, Wyatt, Tucker, Kinlee, Adam, Westin, MaLori, Christopher, Breanna, Julia, and Tori; sister, Nona Pearl Seals, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Gilbert, and Jackie Gilbert, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Donna is preceded in death by her parents, William Carol and Dollie Mae Gilbert, her brothers, Billy Gilbert, Donald Gilbert, Weldon Gilbert, and Harvey Gilbert; sister, Mary Frances Gilbert, brother-in-law, Charles Seals, and sisters-in-law, Lavada Gilbert and Doris Gilbert.

The family would like to extend our thanks to the loving support that we received from Shannon Hospital, Hospice of San Angelo, and doctors John Harvey, Taylor Kingman, Richard Van de Graaf, David Cummings, Raj Cheruku, and Kenneth Jastrow; and all the nurses in ICU and on the 4th and 5th floors. Your graciousness and love for our mother was felt every day.

The family would like to extend an invitation to everyone to join them in Celebration to Celebrate the life of Donna at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 8th at Northridge Baptist Church, 2447 W FM-2105, San Angelo, TX 76901. A Family Visitation and Viewing will be held on Sunday, January 7th from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Harper Funeral Home, 2606 Southland Blvd, San Angelo, TX. 76904.

With this marriage Donald gained two sons Chris Buchanan and Michael (Wallace) Branch whom he raised as his own. He later adopted Michael. From a previous marriage he had a son Derrick Smith. He was such an amazing role model for his boys. He was so proud of them and the men they have become. They were his pride and joy. In 1999, he became a grandpa when Skylar Buchanan was born, again in 2005 when Emmah Buchanan was born, and again in 2007 when Ashton Ledford joined the family. He was the best loving, Spoiling papa in the world. They knew if they wanted something just ask papa because he never said no.

After getting his CDL he stayed in the oilfield moving rigs, moving his way up to Truck Superintendent at Patterson UTI. Donald always said “Go Big or Go Home” so he decided it was time for him to go big and he purchased his own Big Truck. He was so proud of this new adventure. He leased on to Amigo Pipe hauling Pope out to the rigs. In 2017, Donald and Jeanie moved to San Angelo, Texas, where he leased his truck on to Hirschfeld Steel (W&W Afco) hauling bridge beams. He absolutely loved and cherished the people he worked with. He had such an amazing boss and found a best friend in one of his coworkers. This company was everything to him and it showed.

When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed building his Jet boat which he couldn’t wait to race in the 2024 season with the Southern Drag Boat Association, which he is a member. If it wasn’t the Jet Boat, it was his big truck. In his words that was his home away from home so it stayed polished and cleaned, and the more chrome he could put on it the better. That was his baby! More than anything he loved spending time with his family and smoking on the grill. He was the best at cooking on the grill and would cook for anyone who would come to eat. He loved giving loved ones a hard time and telling jokes. Donald had the most infectious smile, and any time you saw him you couldn’t help but fall in love with that smile. He was the most caring, trusting, compassionate, giving, and loving person. Everything he did he gave 100 percent. He touched so many lives and will be missed by many.

“For some things, there are no words. Only hands to hold, shoulders to lean on, and hugs to comfort.”

Joseph Wendel (J.W.) Lown

01/02/2024 - 13:09 , by TKing09

Joseph Wendel (J.W.) Lown, former Mayor of San Angelo, 47, passed away of a heart attack on Friday, November 15, 2023, in his home in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico.

He was born November 16, 1976, in San Angelo to George W. Lown and Alicia Booth Lown, a love story that began across borders.  His maternal grandparents were also united cross culturally, Alicia Elizondo of Torreon, Mexico, & Daniel Booth originally from Mobile, Alabama.

Joseph is survived by his sister Alicia V. Lown of San Angelo, and by his husband Eduardo Mora, and beloved Schnauzer Maya, of San Miguel de Allende.

Joseph was first elected Mayor of San Angelo in May, 2003, at the age of twenty-six. He was one of the youngest elected mayors in the United States at the time. He was elected for four terms. Despite a majority vote of 89%, he chose not to serve his final term. Instead, he left the United States to start a new life in Mexico with his chosen partner, who because of his immigration status could not remain in Texas. Joseph and Eduardo were legally married in Mexico City on November 16, 2013.  During his time as Mayor of San Angelo, he committed himself to being a full-time mayor, and was known to attend multiple civic events on a daily basis. Most remember him as one of the greatest politicians of his time. He had a magical way of making everyone feel included and special, no matter what their background or social status.

Although Joseph no longer lived in San Angelo, he maintained a deep and abiding affection for his community. He kept in contact with many people and offered support and encouragement, to what extent he was able. He was known for his practice of listening deeply to those around him, and for being a beacon of kindness and courage.  With an open heart that embraced all walks of life, and a spirit that led by example, Joseph touched many lives with his warmth, wisdom, and unyielding love of San Angelo.

His talent for listening helped him to earn a successful career in politics, Mexican law, and as a real estate agent. He expressed that same practice early on at Santa Rita Elementary, John Glenn Junior High, and San Angelo Central High School. After attending Angelo State University, he went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Principia College, a small liberal arts college in Elsah, Illinois. An avid golfer in his teens and throughout life, he received awards for maintaining academic excellence while playing a varsity sport.

After graduating from college, Joseph was briefly married to Miranda Tarver, now Miranda Ash, with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship.  During this time, he joined the Peace Corps and spent 2½ years in Bolivia where he taught entrepreneurial skills to women. This was done in partnership with Aldeas SOS Children’s Village, a global organization that supports women and children at risk.  Through his love of the performing arts, he and his college theater professor Richard Morse, formed a theater troupe with the children from the SOS Children´s Village.  Once he completed his work in Bolivia, they arranged for the Bolivian children to tour the U. S. in a theater production called “Niños de mi Corazón.”  Joseph always loved music and the performing arts, and he and Eduardo enjoyed sponsoring live music performances and theater events in San Miguel.

The entrepreneurial skills that Joseph taught to others came early. As a child, if he wasn’t going door to door selling bullwhips he’d made from leftover carpet scraps and sticks, he ran a lemonade stand. After seeing the carts used for selling food on the streets in Mexico, he asked his mother to have a cart made for his own enterprise. From then on, he brought lemonade to the customers rather than waiting for them to come to him. Later on, the real estate companies he worked with and founded in San Angelo, briefly in Mexico City, and in San Miguel de Allende, were not just businesses. They were his passion. He brought to them the skills and talents, the interests and practices, and the service and sacrifice that made his personal life rich and complete. His clients became life-long friends. “He will remain in our lives,” commented one client recently, “because of the way he lived his.”

While living in San Angelo he frequently walked a local labyrinth at Unity Spiritual Center, a church that his parents helped found.   Joseph was known to travel in search of present-day solutions in the wisdom of the past. He was looking forward to a biblical pilgrimage to Egypt and the Holy Land, with his bible study group. For the past four years he maintained a practice of reading through the Bible once a year, following a precise plan that involved daily selections from the Old and New Testaments. He also wrote morning pages where he summarized his reflections and daily intentions. Since he was always looking for different ways to enrich his spiritual practice, his sister introduced him to Inner Engineering, a discipline of yoga and meditation. This was a daily practice for which they held each other accountable.

Joseph’s determination to include as many people from as wide a spectrum as possible was expressed in the New Year’s Day, “Kumba Ya’ll” open house which he and Eduardo held in San Miguel. It was a bilingual celebration of cross-border relationships. Such hospitality was rooted in the practice of his parents. His father George was the son of Swedish immigrants who had moved to the San Angelo area in the 1940’s, and his mother Alicia, was from Mexico City originally.  The two met in Vienna, Austria through the hospitable efforts of a mutual friend. After marrying and making a home in San Angelo, his mother, who was born in Mexico, made sure to register both of her children in Mexico as dual citizens. The love story that began across borders in the 1930´s with Joseph´s grandparents, Doña Alicia Elizondo of Mexico and Daniel Booth, an engineer from Alabama, who was working in Mexico when he met Alicia and fell in love. Considering the three generations of multicultural love in his family, it was always Joseph´s hope that San Angelo and San Miguel would someday be designated as Sister Cities, connecting the Heart of Texas to the Heart of Mexico.

As we continue our journey, guided by the indelible impressions he left on our hearts, Joseph will always remain an eternal inspiration to us all.  A testament to the incredible impact one life can have and as reminder to come together, unite, and be the best versions of ourselves that we can possibly aspire to be.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, February 2, 2024, in San Miguel de Allende, and in San Angelo at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Murphy Performance Hall, 72 W. College Ave.  A reception will follow at the Museum of Fine Arts.

In order to create a legacy and continue Joseph´s passion for the Betterment of Humanity, a memorial fund has been set up with the San Angelo Area Foundation, named the Joseph Wendel (J.W.) Lown Memorial Fund.  It will be used to further projects and organizations loved by Joseph.

Alicia and Eduardo would like to extend their utmost gratitude for the gracious outpouring of Love & support during this time.

Survivors include her husband, John Durkay; three sons, Mark Durkay of Fredericksburg, Jeffrey Durkay and wife Mary, and Brian Durkay and wife Dannielle all of San Angelo; two brothers, Jerry Freeman of Akron, Ohio, and Robert Freeman of San Angelo; two grandchildren, Nicole (Durkay) Key and husband Joe, and Michael Durkay; and two great grandchildren, Jaylee Key, and MaKenna Key. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, L. Michael Freeman.

Memorials may be made to: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741
