Donald Johnson Charlesworth

09/23/2022 - 11:30 , by TKing09

Born to Donald and Anna Charlesworth on June 13, 1937 in Bridgeton, New Jersey, Don (Dad, Husband, PawPaw, Pop) passed from this earth on September 20, 2022.

Raised in Elmer, New Jersey, Don joined the Air Force as an Electronics Technician in 1955 and served his country for 20 years. During this time, he and his growing family were stationed in Wichita Falls, TX, Japan, Hawaii, Tennessee, California and finally, Abilene, TX. Shortly after military retirement, Don located his family to the San Angelo, TX area where he worked with Diebold covering the West Texas Region.

Throughout the time in San Angelo and West Texas, Don volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, Fort Concho, school activities and never hesitated to help a person in need. His interests were far-reaching, and those interests lead him to cross paths with many people who oftentimes would become Friends.

Some might say the phrase; "jack of all trades and master of none" fit Don quite well. However, those that knew him would likely agree that a more brilliant - or creative - mind was hard to find when a solution to a problem was needed! And… if one needed a piece or a part (for … something … anything) he likely had it "collected" for use at just "that" right time!

In his younger years, Don enjoyed jeep runs, playing professional fast pitch softball and camping. He took part in historical reenactments at Fort Concho in Texas. He was a collector and a dreamer. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend. Don will forever be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Don is survived by his wife of nineteen years, Nancy; son Will (and Janet) Charlesworth, daughters Susan (and Bruce) Snow, Teresa (and James) McDonald and Brenda (and Brad) Greebon. He was extremely proud of his seventeen grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were equally as proud to know him as PawPaw!

Smiling, we know Don would not hesitate to recognize that in one way or another, his solution oriented / creative mindedness is reflected in his children and grand kids!

A graveside service and committal with military honors will take place in Elmer, New Jersey at a later date.

Online condolences can be made at https://shafferpioneer.com/. Funeral arrangements were trusted to Shaffer Funeral Home - Sherwood Way, 1939 Sherwood Way San Angelo, TX 76901, (325) 224-2828.

Gary Lee Duncan

09/23/2022 - 09:38 , by TKing09

Gary was on his way home from his 9th Three Flags Classic Labor Day run from Mexico to Canada, an event sponsored by Southern California Motorcycle Association, when on the return trip, he became ill in Missoula, Montana and was hospitalized at St. Patrick's Hospital for a week. He unexpectedly passed away on September 19, 2022 at the age of 79 79.

Viewing will be from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM on Monday, September 27, 2022 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with family receiving friends from 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 28, 2022 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with his longtime friend, Bro. Earnest J. Brown of McAlester, Oklahoma, officiating. Burial will be in Harriet Community Cemetery immediately following the service under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Gary was born on June 22, 1943, in Hemet, California to the late J.D. and Ethel Marie (Coleman) Duncan Leathers. He and his family relocated to Adair, Oklahoma where Gary attended Bittercreek Elementary and graduated from Adair HS in 1961. He enlisted in the USAF where he proudly served 8 years. He was in AF training in Wichita Falls at Sheppard AFB. Persuaded by a buddy, he went to Denton "where the girls were". There it all started when he met the love of his life, Joyce Wilson. He was then transferred to Waco and stationed at John Connolly AFB as a flight line mechanic. Gary and Joyce were married in 1963 at the Little Chapel in the Woods on the TWU campus in Denton.

Next came Denver in 1965 where he trained at Lowery AFB as an electronics technician and then received an assignment to McClellan AFB in Sacramento, California, where son David was born in 1968. The family returned to Adair, OK where he worked for GRDA in power distribution as a relay technician until he began work for ARAMCO in 1981 and spent the next 7 years in power distribution in Saudi Arabia.

Gary and Joyce left Arabia and settled for 2 years in Las Vegas. The next move was to San Angelo in 1991, where they have remained. Joyce was employed at Shannon and Baptist until her retirement. Gary was a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor and started a business with Linda Ashton to provide motorcycle safety training for the public but primarily for GAFB airmen.

He was passionate about motorcycles, his 12-string guitar playing and family music sessions, Willie Nelson and his music and John Wayne. He enjoyed solitude and this is where he was most at peace.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce; a son, David of the Harriet community; his sister, Joyce Koscheski and husband Al of Arlington; niece, Connie Kramer and husband Kevin of Montgomery; nephew, Michael Koscheski and wife Jo Lisa of Shaw AFB in South Carolina; cousins, Jean and Danny Duck of Arkansas; and special family friend, Margaret Schiffner of Fort Worth.

Special thanks go to the East Missoula Volunteer Fire Department for their quick response and to the staff and physicians at St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula, Montana.

Ruby Rose McDonald

09/22/2022 - 09:08 , by TKing09

Ruby Augusta Louise Rose McDonald was joyously welcomed home by our Lord and Savior on September 14, 2022, at home in San Angelo, TX.  She was 84. Now she is dancing barefoot in the fields of heaven with her son Stephen and all of our family that went before her.

Ruby was born in Rowena, Texas, to Louis Otto and Ella Pfluger Rose on April 12, 1938.  She grew up on her family's cotton farm between Rowena and Ballinger with her parents and 6 siblings. She was not a stranger to hard work.

Ruby graduated from Ballinger High School, Class of 1956. "Strong as nails, tough as bricks, we're the Class of '56" was their motto.  This is where she originally earned the nickname "Tuffy", while standing up for her older and younger siblings on the school bus.

She worked at GTE as a stenographer for about a year before she met the love of her life at the ODHS Hall in Rowena.  She flirted and danced her way into the heart of James Patrick "Pat" McDonald and they married on January 18, 1957. Who knew where this union between "spicy mouth Ruby and cool calm Pat" might lead.

The couple lived in San Angelo briefly, before moving to Fort Stockton, Texas, where they were blessed with the birth of their first child in 1958, Stephen Patrick. This is where Bill Hook earned top honors with Ruby for massaging her back during labor. Also, about the time that Mikey was tested with his mission to purchase a breast pump for Ruby. She was so loved. She was a wonderful mother, wife and homemaker. They had many fun times at Balmorhea State Park, swimming and fishing.

This sweet little family of three moved back to San Angelo in 1960 where they welcomed their second child, Kathryn Ella, that same year.  They bought a little love shack on Parker Street that she turned into a beautiful home.  This is when Pat started a new job with Pool Company that evolved into family and friends that would last a lifetime.

Ruby and Pat were instrumental in forming several dance clubs in San Angelo and they continued to waltz across Texas for 65 years, making friends wherever they went from Wall, to Ennis, to Hallettsville, to St. Lawrence and even Nebraska. They led the Grand March for a countless number of weddings and anniversary celebrations.  Annual vacations throughout their lives were spent mostly in the mountains of Creede, Colorado, camping and fishing.

The family moved to Perryton in 1964 where they stayed for two years.  They moved back to San Angelo and Pat was eventually able to talk Ruby into another addition to the family and to their home on Parker Street. The magical third child arrived in 1968, Kiva DeAun was the sparkle of sunshine that completed this perfect family.

Ruby continued to be the hostess with the mostest, entertaining and sharing her joy and laughter with all. That home was basecamp for numerous 42 and 84 domino games, skip-bo parties and the famous "doo-doo" on your neighbor card games.

Ruby did return to work briefly at the S&H Green Stamp store where she continued to make cherished friends.  She won the prize for best dessert at every annual Pool Company picnic.  She was an amazing seamstress, sewing so many of her children's outfits as they grew up.  Ruby worked so hard instilling the value of caring for all those in need, the elderly, the sick, and the grieving.  Before there was a "meals on wheels", SHE WAS!

This special woman filled her days with mowing "the Place", working in the garden, canning fresh salsa, making tamales, pickling more things than should probably ever be pickled, and hosting beautiful family gatherings, such as the infamous annual Easter Egg Hunt with the Grand Prize!!! She also played a pretty intense game of volleyball with the legendary "McDonald Rules". Nana Ruby was known for making a mean pot of beans at the family reunions, cooking anything the grandchildren requested and showing them NO MERCY when it came to playing a hot game of dominoes.

Ruby and Pat always filled their lives with fun and adventure, whether they were taking road trips all around the United States, up the west coast, the east coast, from Florida to California or right up the middle.  They cruised all around with family and friends, as well as taking trips to Germany, Cancun and Hawaii.  Lake Amistad fishing trips with ventures into old Mexico and family motorcycle outings, they always managed to make time for living life to the fullest. Pat even surprised her with a Yamaha motorcycle, disguised as her 35th birthday gift.

After several years in and out of the hospital and multiple rehab facilities, Ruby's long "Tuff" journey has come to a close here on this earth. I can only imagine the glorious celebration of a life well lived welcoming her to her heavenly home. What a dance party it must be!

Ruby was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Patrick, her parents, Ella Pfluger and Louis Rose, her siblings, Francis, J.C., Leona and Doris.

She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, James Patrick McDonald; her daughters, Kathy & Kiva; her 7 grandchildren James Weldon, Matthew Dean, Zachary Beck, Thomas Patrick, Jonathan Keith, Jada Kai, and Stephen Kash; and great-grandchildren Leah Rose, Luke Thomas, Quinn Evelyn, Walker Dean, Elizabeth Kay "Birdie", Louella Jean, Melrose Joe, Tobias James, Thomas Oliver, Lexi and Garrett; her sisters Gladine and Alice.  In addition to numerous nieces and nephews, much like daughters and sons, as well as cousins, that are more like siblings.  Ruby is also survived by a vast number of cherished friends. Ruby's grandsons and granddaughter will serve as pall bearers.

Viewing will be at Robert Massie Funeral Home on Friday, September 23, 2022 and the family will receive friends from 5:30 - 7:00pm. Graveside services will be 2:00pm Saturday, September 24, 2022, at the old historical Ben Ficklin Cemetery with the service conducted by "the bottom of the barrel", family attorney and nephew, William Patrick "Bill" Lane.  Fiddle played by longtime family friend, Harvey Wanier.

Royce Don Clay Jr.

09/22/2022 - 09:05 , by TKing09

San Angelo - Royce Don “RD” Clay, Jr., 62, died unexpectedly on September 19, 2022 at a local hospital. He was born December 10, 1959, in Lubbock, Texas, the son of Royce Don Clay, Sr. and Patricia Jean (Darnell) Clay.

Royce graduated from Muleshoe High School, class of 1978. Following graduation he attended Odessa College and Texas Tech University. He graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. While a student at Tech, he met and married Linda Ruth Black on September 4, 1981, settling in Lubbock. Royce began his banking career in Lubbock, but soon made moves to Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, and finally to the little town of Colorado City, TX.

Royce was an active member of and an elder for the Roscoe church of Christ. He taught bible classes to all ages, assisted with VBS when possible, officiated weddings and funerals, preached from the pulpit and served at the Lord’s table. He participated in the Colorado City chapter of Kiwanis Club, Christmas in April, Fourth of July Fly-In, and was a board member for the Colorado Opera House. He was very supportive of the local school district. He would meet with students, attend school events, coach the debate team, and on occasion be a guest speaker or presenter in the classroom. He also encouraged students to come and visit the bank and to ask questions — lots of questions. Every now and again, he would play Santa Claus under the big Christmas tree in the bank lobby, bringing him an immeasurable amount of joy. At home he had a greenhouse sanctuary and would spend hours working on plants, listening to music, cooking up a brisket or smoking up some ribs. He loved supporting his wife Linda’s Jazz Band in the infamous crawfish boil events and Christmas concerts, taking his daughter to early morning piano lessons far and wide, and making sure his son had the best in trumpet lessons and experiment materials (such as a potato cannon). Several dogs came and went through the years and he loved them all. Royce was an avid reader with lists of books he wanted to read and those that he wanted to read again. He had an amazing mind - he could quote and be inspired by scripture, find meaning in little things and seek answers to hard questions. He found joy in the creativity and happiness of others, and was an exceptional businessman, friend, father, husband and Pops.

Royce is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kathryn Jill Clay, Austin, Texas.

Royce is survived by his wife Linda Clay of San Angelo; his daughter Joni Abel and husband Justin of San Angelo; his son Justin “JD” Clay and wife Katy of McKinney; and by his beloved grandchildren, June Abel and Nolan Clay. He is survived by his parents Royce Clay, Sr. and Patricia Clay, of Lubbock; his sister Brenda Conner and husband Steve, of Lubbock; and by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and their families.

A memorial service will be held at Johnson Street church of Christ in San Angelo, TX on Saturday, September 24, at 2:00. He desired to be cremated and to be free with the wind in a place he loved. He thanks his honorary pallbearers Bobby Lemons, Bob Martin, John O. Johnson, and Ty Wood, and wants them to know he loves them.

If desired, memorials can be made to Molly Dawidow and/or Ed Nikosi. Molly Dawidow is in Poland and has been a tremendous help in assisting Ukrainian refugees, especially women and children. Ed Nikosi is in South Africa and is a minister and director of a preaching school. Contact Sean Cain at Roscoe church of Christ, PO Box 307, Roscoe, TX 79545, for more information.
