Virginia Castleberry Smith, 78, of San Angelo passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
Viewing will be from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM on Monday, July 24, 2023 at Robert Massie Funeral Home with a rosary at 6:00 PM. Liturgy of the word will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery in Menard under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith was born on June 25, 1945 in Menard to Castilo and Soledad DeAnda Gutierrez. Virginia worked at Navajo's Restaurant for 34 years and at the nursing home in Menard. She moved to San Angelo and opened Virgie's Restaurant for 3 years. Virginia was a home health worker in the Concho Valley, a housekeeper at Shannon Medical Center, and worked in the behavioral unit at San Angelo State School, retiring in the early 2000s. She was a hard worker, honest and not afraid to give you, her opinion. She loved gambling at casinos and playing Bingo. Virginia spent a lot of time at the ranch raising Boer goats and cattle. She was the "Rock" of her family and helped raise her granddaughter, Jessica. Virginia was married to Kenneth Castleberry who preceded her in death in 1992. She loved her best friend, very favorite cousin who she loved like a sister, Delia Messer Hernandez and her last living aunt, Pauline Castillo.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Angel Lynn Gutierrez; and brother, Roy Gutierrez.
She is survived by three children, Mary Kay Lynn Gutierrez of San Angelo, Daniel Anthony Gutierrez and Rose Mary of Llano, and Andrew A. Escamilla and partner Chris of Austin; three siblings, Ray Gutierrez and wife Betty of Menard, Lydia Munoz and husband Santos of Brady, and Roger Gutierrez and wife Sylvia of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Jessica Ellis and husband Jordan of San Angelo, Nicole Gutierrez of Austin, and Nathaniel Gutierrez of Hamilton; and four great-grandchildren, Arianna Ellis, Ryan Ellis, Riata Gutierrez, and Aubrey Gutierrez.
The family would like to thank her good neighbors for watching out for her and Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.
