Rod Bridgman

07/19/2024 - 11:53 , by TKing09

Luther Rodney (Rod) Bridgman, 78, of Titusville, Florida, passed away on July 13, 2024 following a brief illness.

Rod was born to Ivan and Eudora Bridgman in Ponca City, Oklahoma on June 13, 1946.  His mother was thrilled to have a baby boy on whom to dote and had a close and loving relationship with her son throughout her life.  After graduating from Ponca City High School he attended Bethany Nazarene College In Oklahoma City, OK.

Rod had a carefree and unconventional approach to life from a young age. Among his many successful career endeavors were jewelry wholesaling and later commodity trading. He met the love of his life, Dennise Ferry, in Tyler, Texas in 1994. They married three years later in Jamaica, honeymooning on the Blues Cruise.

Rod’s love for Blues music ran wide and deep. He was a respected Blues aficionado. His enthusiasm for all things artful was immediate, infectious and irreplaceable. After retiring to San Angelo, Texas in 1999 his dream of creating a Blues venue evolved into something much larger.

Rod spearheaded the creation of the San Angelo Blues Society, the annual Simply Texas Blues Festival, and the unexpected Blues movement in West Texas. He was instrumental in bringing about the revitalization of downtown San Angelo and was a key figure in its growth through the years.

He and Dennise purchased an Antebellum style building at 204 S. Oakes St. in February 1999. At the time, that area of downtown San Angelo was 80% unoccupied.  The couple spent 10 years restoring the old building that had been condemned and abandoned for 20 years creating a magical boutique hotel and music venue – Sealy Flats Diner & Blues Inn.  Rod was known for bringing a host of local visual artists and musicians together – nurturing them, supporting them, loving them.  He also regularly featured award-winning state and national Blues acts in his intimate courtyard on that small, beloved Sealy Flats stage.

He and Dennise moved to Titusville, Florida in the early spring of 2015 to be closer to family.

Missed will be Rod’s endearing, laid-back greeting, “What’s going  oooon?”  Missed will be his undying optimism and missed will be his humanity.

He made a difference.  He was loved.

Rod is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Jo Cobb.  He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dennise of Titusville, his sons Dyllan Speller of San Diego, CA and Derek Speller of Tacoma, WA, a sister Jean Bray (Paul) of Shawnee, OK, grandchildren Bentley, Stanley and Bella Speller, numerous nieces and nephews and an enormous circle of friends and extended family.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 22, 2024 at North Brevard Funeral Home, 1450 Norwood Ave, Titusville, FL with visitation at 3:00 pm followed by the funeral at 4pm.  A Life Celebration is being planned to be held in San Angelo, Texas soon.

In lieu of flowers please consider making contributions in Rod’s name to Art in Uncommon Places, San Angelo,Tx ;  The Pinetop Perkins Foundation, Clarksdale, MS or a charity of your choice.

Marion Louise Porter

07/19/2024 - 10:05 , by TKing09

Marion Louise Simmons Porter was born February 15, 1940 and died July 16, 2024.

Mother always knew hard work. She grew-up in a logging community only to move to a coal mining community. She endured many hardships which only led to a strong woman with a never ending, unmatched work ethic. From West Virginia, Maryland, Ohio then Texas she had many honorable friends and always ensured our family needs were met. She did always know work.

While living in Maryland she met our father on a blind date, fell in love and never fell out of love with James Norman Simmons. She loved the concerts they would attend especially the up and coming country-western stars we now know as legends.

Mother was a legend. She set her standards high in all aspects of her life. Her last job at Schleicher County Medical Center 37 years of again, unmatched leadership. She was very proud of this legacy.

She was also proud of her daughters and their families. A very small family but close and all were with her until her end. Daughter Rebecca Simmons-Rios and husband Hector and Daughter, Victoria Lynn Farmer and her sons James Tyler Farmer and wife Cassandra and Ryan Daniel Farmer. Great grandsons Ethan James Farmer and Christopher Lane Farmer.

She is also survived by her brother William Green and her sister Margaret Sullivan.

Mother made this family strong. She insisted on her style of work ethic and also insisted on education. She was so proud of the family she created. Her faith in God and fellowship in the Church of Christ carried her through the hard decisions and outcomes of her life.

“Every man’s life ends
the same way. It is only
the details of how he
lived and how he died
that distinguish one
man from another.”
– Hemingway

Mother was so very loved and respected by us. She is the example of exceptional motherhood. She provided all we needed to ensure our success but mostly taught us how to love.

Linda Cumbie Gladden

07/19/2024 - 10:00 , by TKing09

Linda Cumbie Gladden gained her Angel wings on July 14, 2024 while surrounded by her loving husband, 2 sons, sisters, and niece.

Linda was born on June 24, 1950 and is the daughter of Edward M Cumbie and Jane Luby Cumbie. She was raised on the family ranch at Bronte, TX along with her three sisters. Her grandparents are the late R E and Emma Cumbie of Bronte, TX, and the late Mack and Hazel Luby of San Angelo, TX.

Being the oldest of 4 girls wasn’t the easiest at times, especially growing up on the ranch, but Linda embraced the role. Her sisters often referred to her as their hero as they admired her strong faith, beauty, intelligence, quick wit, athleticism, creativeness, sense of style and who can forget her sense of humor.

Linda was a social butterfly who loved everyone. If you were her friend, it was a forever friendship. From an early age she made longtime friends during her school years at Bronte, and her best friend Dot Mitchell Gaines. Her cousin Jone Paschal was closest in age and was thought of as Linda’s twin. Linda loved Dot and Jone dearly, and the stories of them living life on the wild side are endless entertainment.

After graduating from Bronte High School, she attended Angelo State University, earning a degree in Elementary Education. Her 28-year teaching career began in Odessa TX, with the remaining 20 years at Santa Rita Elementary in San Angelo. She loved all her students, remembered them always, and told the most fascinating stories about her students and her time teaching them. Linda made many deep friendships throughout her teaching career and some of her besties include Faye Coleman, Ricky Eades, Elaine Stribling, and special friend Sherre Tankersley.

She was very active in her community and organizations, including membership in the Odessa Jayceettes, Junior League of San Angelo, San Angelo Aggie Mother’s Club, and membership and president of the Santa Rita Homeowners Assoc.

While she and Pat were raising their boys, they enjoyed their family time snow skiing, camping, boating, and watching her boys play soccer. Linda loved to shop, travel, jewelry, planning parties and family get-togethers, and above all loved God and her family. She treasured celebrating holidays with family and friends, taking time to plan celebrations for another’s achievement. Her home was elegantly decorated for each season and holiday. From spring flowers to fall leaves to twinkling Christmas lights. She was quite the decorator. Her sense of dress and style also spoke to her ability to be an exceptional fashionista. She also enjoyed dancing the night away with her husband. Even if he did not like the song – they danced.

She was part of a group she called “The Six-Pack”. An affectionate name to her four longtime friends Jon and Lynn Herron, and Joe and Linda Saucedo, with she and Pat rounding out “the six”. The six-pack vacationed together every year with their saying: Lynn Herron brings the plan, Linda Saucedo brings the food, and Linda Gladden brings the fun!

Linda’s had a magnetic personality with a passionate joy for life. Her mesmerizing storytelling would entertain children and adults of all ages for hours and hours on end. Perhaps this is why she loved teaching, and her students loved her.

Linda married her college sweetheart Pat Gladden, whom she loved and admired dearly for 51 years until her passing. Linda loved BIG. Her last conscious moments were spent in the early morning hours when she called Pat’s name for help. Pat gave her something to drink, they both said, “I love you”, and she said, “Ok, I’m ready to go to sleep.” She slept for the last few days of her life resting for her journey into Heaven. She took her last breath as the family gathered around her telling stories and laughing, as if she was at a party. Just the way she would want to go. A party, in her home, and with her family.

She is survived by her loving husband Pat, son Jerrod Gladden and grandchildren Taylor and Alexis Gladden and Lauren and Ava Saucedo, son Jeff Gladden and grandchildren Samantha, Jackson, and Graham Gladden, her mother Jane Luby Cumbie, sisters Susan Cumbie Williams (Paul), Dawn Cumbie Burwick, and Shelley Cumbie, along with many Cumbie and Luby cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Ed Cumbie, niece Shay Burwick, her grandparents, and special in-laws Pat and Pearl Gladden.

Services will be on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at 10:00 at Glen Meadows Baptist Church in San Angelo. Burial will follow at noon at Fairview Cemetery in Bronte.

Pallbearers will be the “Cumbie Cousins”: Lindsey Brown Burwick, Cory Scott, Nick Arrott, TJ Scott, and Jael Charlene Wyatt.

The family would like to thank Shannon Medical Center and Gentiva Hospice for their kind support and service. In lieu of flowers friends are encouraged to donate to their favorite charity.
