Alfredo was born in San Angelo, Texas May 1, 1925, to Alfredo Vélez Espinosa and Ezra Pérez Reina of Saltillo, México, the first born of nine siblings. His father was a tailor and minister. After living a short time in San Angelo, the family, including his siblings, Gamaliel, Elizabet and David, lived in California and Tijuana, México, where his mother, Elizabet and David died. Alfredo Sr. then married Candelaria Gomez and the family moved to Saltillo, México, where Alfredo Jr. spent his formative and early school years. In 1938 his family moved to Reynosa, Tamaulipas. There, Alfredo Sr. opened a retail business as well as continuing his ministry for the Presbyterian church. During World War II, the retail, and tailoring business catered to companies making uniforms for the American Armed Forces. In 1955 he married Maria Lourdes Pequeño in Reynosa, México and moved to the United States. They lived in Chicago briefly before relocating permanently to San Angelo in 1960, where much of the extended Vélez family had settled after the great Mexican migration during the Mexican Revolution in the late 1910.’s.

Alfredo Vélez Jr. was known not only as a professional tailor, but for his work in the San Angelo community, including member and past president of the Southside Lions Club, president of the Fort Concho PTA, and the board of the Boys Club of America. He was very proud of hosting a Spanish-speaking TV show, “Telecita” with his good friend Mario Martinez and was a Sunday morning DJ for KSJT for a period in the 1970’s. Alfredo touched many lives in the community by serving others less fortunate. He offered his wisdom and experience to many deserving citizens who sought his counsel in varying walks of life. Grant Reed, Jr.

09/06/2022 - 11:14 , by TKing09

“To everything there is a season...a time to be born and a time to die...” Ecclesiastes 3:1

What a wonderful day, December 14, 1937, in Temple, TX; Grant and Helena Malone Reed were blessed with their sixth son, Grant Reed, Jr. He was referred to as “Junior” by his family and friends.

At the age of 5, the family relocated to San Angelo, TX, where he attended San Angelo public schools, Blackshear High being the last one.

Junior was married to Willie Wilson; to this union one son and four daughters were born.

Later, he relocated to Cleveland, OH; from there to Denver, CO; years later, he returned home and married Mary Douglas. They had one son, James.

He attended St. Paul Baptist Church and was later baptized at Christian Fellowship Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Hoover Lemons. He served faithfully on the Usher Board, Food Committee and any place he was needed.

Being that Junior and Charles were the youngest two brothers, there were very close; as such, they ran a business, “Reed Brothers Detail” for four decades.

Gloria was his youngest sister; however, he confided in her and sometimes jokingly called her his “Mother.”

Junior gave up his determination to continue his fight on Charles' birthday, September 2nd at 9:11 a.m. His last days were all peaceful and calm.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joseph, Emmett and LeRoy; two sisters, Ruby and Geraldine; a daughter, Jacqueline Reed and two sons Jimmie Reed and James Reed.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Pearl James, Terrie Smart, Barbara Anthony, Shena Reed and Kyosha Reed; sons, David Wharton, Julius Reed and Jamil Lucas; thirty-one grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; his brothers, Jimmie (Onetha) Reed and Charles (LaRue) Reed; his sisters, Alice Johns and Gloria R. DeWitt; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M., Thursday, September 8, 2022, at Harper Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 10, 2022, at Grace Church in San Angelo with Pastor Jeremy Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
