Fred David Book

04/20/2023 - 17:42 , by live

Fred David Book, 73, of Miles, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 in San Angelo. The rosary will be 6:30 P.M., Thursday and Funeral Mass will be 3:00 P.M., Friday, April 21, 2023 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles, TX. The burial will follow at Miles Cemetery, and all of Freddy’s friends are invited to join the family at the ensuing BBQ being held at the Miles Young Farmers Show Complex.

Fred was born to Felix and Anita Book on September 10, 1949, in San Angelo, Texas. He married Vivian Corrine Griffin on April 7th, 1979, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law John Sferes, brother-in-law John Wilde, and nephew Paul Book.

Fred was a lifelong farmer and rancher growing up on the Book family farm north of San Angelo and moved to Miles in 1979. During the Vietnam Conflict, Fred served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard. Throughout his life, Fred farmed and ranched in Tom Green, Runnels, and McCulloch County. Fred was active in the farming community all over the Concho Valley participating in numerous benefits over the years as an auctioneer and spotter. When it came time for the community to return the favor to Fred for his heart transplant in 2001, the family was overwhelmed by all of the support showered upon them.

Raised on the farm in a family of 10 children, Fred was part of a tight knit group of siblings that learned how to keep each other company for the rest of their lives. All of Fred’s siblings knew that if they wanted to create mischief, Fred and his smile would have to be included.

He was an active player in daily domino games, card games, and any other random games of skill, winning multiple championships over the years. Through the years Fred enjoyed spending time with his family and was especially entertained when life dealt him a second round of grandkids almost a decade after the first round. All who met Fred will recall his signature grin that led to making friends everywhere he went. Fred’s grin was such an indelible feature that the signature smirk would even cause him trouble with the nuns at Sacred Heart Catholic School and drill instructors during basic training.

Fred is survived by Vivian, his wife of forty-four years; his children, Kendra Gully, of Miles, Anita and Shawn Poynor, of San Angelo, Neal and Ana Book, of Laredo; his grandchildren, Kory Gully, Carolynn Eichler, David Poynor, Dylan Poynor, Kenedee Gully, Kash Gray, Barrett Book, Evelyn Poynor, and Brady Book.

He is also survived by nine siblings, John and Nancy Book of Miles, Donnie and Diane Book of Plainview, Michael and Tina Book of San Angelo, Pat and Mike Addison of Bronte, Paula and Bill Rose of Lubbock, Betty Jo Wilde of Wall, Marian and James Seidenberger of San Angelo, Cecil and Stella Book of Miles, and Roy and Chris Book of San Angelo; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his many other domino and card playing buddies.

Pallbearers will be Kory Gully, David Poynor, Dylan Poynor, Kyle Book, Casey McCartney, and Max Kerley

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the building fund for St. Thomas Catholic Church in Miles, TX.

Services: Friday, April 21, 2023 at 3:00PM

Myrtle Louise Wilkerson

04/20/2023 - 13:43 , by live

Myrtle Louise Wilkerson went home to be with the Lord on April 13, 2023, having lived on earth for 100 years, 8 months and 4 days. She was born on August 9, 1922 in Santa Paula, California, to Homer Richards and Adeline Viola (Hatcher) Aten. Her mother passed away when Myrtle was only 5 years old, and she grew up with various aunts, uncles and relatives. She worked several jobs during her high school career. Once, when Myrtle was 18 years old, she worked as a waitress in Ojai, California, and she waited on a young child actress who was celebrating her 13th birthday, Shirley Temple.

Myrtle graduated from Ventura Junior College twice, once at Grade 12 and again with her Associate Degree two years later. Myrtle then served a two-year stint in the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES) in the Navy during World War 2. It was during this time of voluntary service that she met Merritt Wilkerson, a boatswain’s mate in the Navy. They married on June 1, 1945 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Merritt and Myrtle lived the first years of their marriage in Tucson, Arizona, where Merritt worked as an evangelist. They moved to Deming, New Mexico, and started a flower shop and nursery business in 1956, where they worked until their retirement in 1976. During the early years in Deming Myrtle also worked in a doctor’s office. Because she tried to help everyone cure their ailments, she was given the nickname, “Little Doc”. She lived up to that nickname the rest of her life. In 1979 Merritt and Myrtle moved to San Angelo, Texas where Merritt continued his church work until his death in December 1995.

To their marriage were born two sons. Paul Wilkerson, and wife Karen, of San Angelo; and David Wilkerson, of Cebu, Philippines. Grandchildren are Amy Wilkerson, Johanna Winner and husband John, Jonathan Wilkerson and wife Lindsay, Matthew Wilkerson and wife Nana, Sam Wilkerson and Jay Wilkerson. Myrtle is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren: Lucy, Lily, Jack, Slate Madelyn, Steele, Cove, Jaden, Brayden, Maya, Valerie and Leah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Edward Lawrence Aten, and her husband, Merritt Mecham Wilkerson.

Myrtle was a member of the 19th Street Church of Christ, and faithfully served in the church for 76 years. She was a beautiful example of charity and care, and would volunteer to worry about almost everyone. The family is grateful to all the care givers that attended to Myrtle during her last seven years of life. We are especially thankful for the dedication and sacrifice of Ms. Audrey Crabtree.

The graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Fairmount Cemetery on Ave. N in San Angelo. A memorial service will be held following the graveside service at 11:30 am at the 19th Street Church of Christ, 86 E. 19th Street, San Angelo, Texas.

James Clifton Tufts

04/18/2023 - 12:26 , by live

James Clifton Tufts shot three men who were trying to rob a bank in Dodge City on a hot summer's day in June.

Or so we'd like to imagine ... Tufts was a storyteller and a fan of westerns.

He had a black, felt cowboy hat and treasured an Old West-themed family portrait taken in Tombstone, Arizona. It's why we can picture him, standing outside a dusty street corner, firing his six-shooters as the bank robbers dropped to the ground. The commotion would likely draw the attention of Dodge City's sheriff, a lawman who looked

an awful lot like television actor James Arness, as well as two deputies who bore more than a passing resemblance to Ken Curtis and Burt Reynolds. After thanking him profusely, the sheriff would inquire if Tufts could do them one last favor. "How can I help?," asked Tufts, a phrase he uttered often, and those who knew him best would agree he said it a lot. "There's a dangerous outlaw causing problems by the name of 'Leo Blastoma'," the sheriff said. ''And we need someone who's brave enough to face him. Can you do it?" Tufts always volunteered when people needed help. He rode out with his head held high, not seeking fame or glory, but trying to make the world a better place.

As he journeyed out of Dodge City, he'd begin imagining what his life would be like if he wasn't hunting dangerous outlaws -a life well-lived and deeply appreciated by those who knew and loved him.

A good life, he thought, would start precisely on October 18, 1952, in somewhere pleasant like Ashland, Massachusetts. He'd be the only child of James and Katherine Tufts, and he'd spend countless, happy summers in Maine building sandcastles along the beach.

He'd grow into a fine young man with a deep appreciation for cinema, and so he'd graduate Grahm Junior College in Boston, Massachusetts with a degree in television production and film.

His pursuit of knowledge would lead him to graduate from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in communications, and then later receive a teaching certificate for US History, World History, Texas History, Economics and Government from Angelo State University.

In Boston, he'd meet Mary Anne Latham, a beautiful young woman who wouldn't give him the time of day for months, but that was alright. Thanks to perseverance (and making friends with her mother), he'd eventually take Mary out on a few dates. They'd fall in love and get married in 1973.

He and Mary Anne Latham Tufts would happily travel the country together, and later the world, seeing places like Stonehenge, the Louvre, the Alps, the Crown Jewels of England, Rome and Africa, where a tribe of Maasai people would bestow upon him the name, "Blessed One."

Their marriage, equally blessed, would produce two children -John Gabriel Tufts and Sarah Marie Curry. To each child, he'd give his love for storytelling. His son would make a career writing as a journalist in Indianapolis, Indiana. His daughter would take the stage as an actor in Austin, Texas.

A nurturing and loving parent, he'd read his son's stories and watch just about every theater production his daughter was involved in.

Service would be a major part of his life. He would join the United States Air Force in November of 1972. A Vietnam Era Veteran, he would retire after 22 years of active duty service with the rank of Captain in March of 1996.

Having a servant's heart, he would attend Unity Spiritual Center in San Angelo, Texas often volunteering to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees, as a prayer chaplain and would drive people to and from church whenever needed.

In serving his community, he'd join the East Angelo Lions Club in San Angelo, Texas, and volunteer with the American Red Cross.

When not doing volunteer work, his leisure activities would include rooting for (and sometimes yelling at), the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. He'd love playing cribbage and joking and laughing with friends in the Lions Club.

He'd enjoy golfing too -mostly watching it in his later years -and playing putt-putt with his grandchildren: Lauryn, Ethan and Owen Clark, and Sage Aleksandra Tufts, all of them seemingly filled with the light and laughter of a thousand stars.

"We are all made of star-stuff," he'd often like to say, a quote by Carl Sagan, and a reminder that all of us belong to the universe, and to the universe we must return one day in a different form.

At age 70, James Clifton Tufts went back to the universe as 'star-stuff ' on April 15, 2023.

It was a great life, in which he'd been a happy and curious traveler, and like so many characters in his beloved westerns who rode off quietly into the sunset, he was remembered as a kind friend, a good father, caring grandparent, and a loving husband -not to mention, a wonderful, wonderful storyteller.

Memorial Services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at Unity Spiritual Center, 5237 Bryant Blvd South, San Angelo, Texas 76904 with Rev. Janie L. Kelley, bereavement coordinator at Angels Care Hospice, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Texas Lions Camp, P.O. Box 290247, Kerrville, TX 78029.

Roy Clarence Eisenbach, Jr

04/18/2023 - 12:10 , by live

At the age of 64 Roy J joined our heavenly Father on Monday, April 17, while surrounded by loved ones.

A longtime resident of Christoval and a graduate of Lake View High School, Roy J shared his life with his wife, Conie Eisenbach and was a proud father to Ike Eisenbach and his wife Shanna Eisenbach, Kimberlee Silerio and her husband Eric Silerio, Katelynn Kennemer and her husband Cole Kennemer. He felt most accomplished by the fact he had his grandchildren, Taylor, Baylee and Wes Eisenbach, Kash, Braxton, and Kyler Silerio and Beau Mason Kennemer. Born to Pat Shoemake, he was also raised by Tom Shoemake, Clarice Eisenbach and Roy Eisenbach. He was the oldest of six brothers and two sisters.

Roy J never failed at letting his entire family know how much he cared, nor how much he was always there for them. A cousin, uncle, nephew, son, best friend, colleague, mentor, there were many titles that he held. Roy J lived a long life of providing for his family and community through his many years of work in the oil field as he always wanted to.

A friend to many, Roy J loved being a helping hand. Though he may had been the quietest man in a crowd, he was most definitely loud through his actions. He was an extremely successful polo player, consultant, golfer, fisherman and hunter. Roy J was a noble man of God who shared his heart through back porch music sessions and every single one of his humble actions, discipling always through action. While his best days were spent in the middle of nowhere, he always knew his way home and never failed to return with a story and love for his wife.

Roy J will be deeply missed, thought of and appreciated. Though today and the tomorrows to come will bring tears, let us all hold steadfast to the fact that he is now surrounded by his brothers, best friends, grandparents and most importantly Jesus Christ.
