John (Johnny) William Kelso, II, age 54, of San Angelo, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2023. John was born on January 17, 1969, at Barksdale AFB. John was the only child of John and Loyce Kelso.

He graduated from Nederland High School and attended Howard College. John worked at the San Angelo State School until his retirement. While at the State School he met the love of his life, Michele. They started their life together as man and wife on July 15, 2000. John loved family and being a dad. Helping raise Michele’s boys and their daughter, Rene, were the happiest moments of his life.

John, Michele and Rene’ are all active members of the Paul Ann Baptist Church, where the Men’s Group has been a blessing in the Kelso house.

John Kelso is survived by his wife, Michele Kelso of San Angelo, Texas; mother, Loyce Kelso; children Senjen Browder and grandchildren Madalynn and Weston; Clinton Browder (Kandice) and grandchildren Grant, Addison, Leon, Cypher, Scarlett; and Rene’ Kelso.

John is predeceased by his father, John Kelso; In laws Michael and Judy Schmickle; a special aunt and uncle, Joyce and Mel, who helped raise him; and a sweet baby angel that he and Michele lost.

A memorial service will be held at Paul Ann Baptist Church in the Impact Auditorium at 10:00am on Saturday May 20, 2023. Services will be conducted by Willie Rojas. Men Standing in Honor will be Chris Dunbar, Travis Griffith and Stephen Foster.

Florence Merlene Vickers (94) passed away Friday, May 12, 2023, in San Angelo, TX.

Merlene was born May 18, 1928 in El Campo, Texas to Glenn Ivan and Florence Ruby Banfield. She graduated from El Campo High School in 1945 and then moved to San Angelo to attend the Shannon School of Nursing.

In 1946 she was introduced to Gene Vickers. They were married August 21, 1946 and enjoyed 73 years together prior to his passing in 2019. They made San Angelo their home and for the majority of the time she was a homemaker. She was an excellent cook and skilled seamstress. She sewed and knitted many garments for her children. She accepted Christ as her Savior at a young age and was a faithful servant. She taught adult Sunday School at Lake View Christian Church for many years as well as held numerous leadership positions and sang in the choir. After the children graduated, she worked at the Credit Bureau of San Angelo until her retirement. She enjoyed spending time with family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and their activities.

With a sweet spirit and gentle nature, she was a positive inspiration to all who knew her.

Merlene was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by her brother; Ivan Banfield (Jean) of Denison, children; Sandy McCracken(Tiger) of San Angelo, Tom Vickers(Jennifer) of Brownwood, grandchildren; Whitney Vinson(Orrin) of Water Valley, Blake McCracken of Ridgecrest, CA, Bryce Vickers(Sharon) of Lubbock, and Kirk Vickers of Lewisville, and great grandchild John Oliver Vinson of Water Valley, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends gratitude to Veronica Martinez for countless hours of loving, untiring care provided for Merlene over many years. Also, a special thanks to Dr. Carl Anderton for his many years of dedicated care.

There will be an open viewing on Monday, May 15, 2023, from 8:00am-7:00pm, at Harper Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 11:00am, with Pastor Bobby Roger officiating.

Rody Robert Shanafelt, commonly referred to as Bob or Bobby, of San Angelo, TX, passed away at the age of 87 on Friday, May 12, 2023. He was born on September 9, 1935, in Stamford, TX to Autrey and Rody Shanafelt. Bobby always had a story to tell and was quite knowledgeable in a vast array of subjects such as history, classic literature, and stories about growing up on his grandparents’ farm. He was an amazing dancer, artist, handyman, and confidant. You could always find him wearing one of his oversized sweaters or riding his bicycle around town.

Bobby Shanafelt is survived by his wife, Helen Shanafelt of San Angelo, TX; sister, Betty Scott, of Arroyo Grande, CA; oldest daughter, Kelly Shanafelt, of Austin, TX; son, Colin Shanafelt, of Austin, TX; daughter, Mackenzie Fette, of El Paso, TX; grandson, Travis Fette; granddaughters, Presley Shanafelt, Felicity Fette, and Eleanor Fette. Bobby is predeceased by his father, Rody Shanafelt; his mother, Autrey Shanafelt; and his daughter, Casey Shanafelt.

A memorial service will be held at College Hills Baptist Church on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 11am.

Carlos A. Valles Jr. of San Angelo left for paradise with our Heavenly Father on May 6th, 2023. He was born to Carlos Valles Sr. and Alma Rosa Aguirre in Odessa, Texas on September 18, 1973.

Carlos attended Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, and later made a career in the oilfield for 30 plus years. His joy came from spending time with his family, especially his children. He always enjoyed making people laugh with his unique personality. Carlos was a man with a huge heart, and anything he did for someone was genuine and came from a place of love. Carlos married his wife Adrianne Valles on February 24, 2015. He was a phenomenal father to his children, even his stepchildren whom he raised and loved as his own.

He is survived by his wife Adrianne Valles of San Angelo. His children, Aracely Bevanie Valles, Elias Carlos Valles, Dalila Santamaria, and Daniel Santamaria Jr. all of San Angelo, Texas. Sister Sandra Zavala and husband Robert Zavala, sister Monica Martinez and husband Joe Martinez, and brother Dominick Valles all of Odessa, Texas. Nieces, DeAndra Martinez, Makayla Martinez, Khloe Martinez, and Melanie Jase Zavala. Nephews, Brendon Martinez, Joe Diego Martinez Jr. and JJ Martinez all of Odessa, Texas. Accompanying our loss are many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Carlos is proceeded in death by his mother Alma Rosa Valles, father Carlos Valles Sr., his niece Bevanie Wade, his grandparents, several uncles and an aunt.

Visitation will be at Harper Funeral Home in San Angelo on May 15, 2023 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. Funeral service will take place on May 16, 2023 at San Angelo First Assembly of God at 2 P.M.

Pallbearers include, Joe Martinez, Robert Zavala, Joe Diego Martinez Jr, Brendon Martinez, Dominick Valles, Elias Valles, Johnny Martinez, Rodolfo Martinez, Daniel Santamaria Jr, Devin Patel, and Frankie Ramirez.

Thank you to the many doctors, nurses, therapists, and healthcare workers for all the care they provided Carlos for the past 3 years.

Judy Phillips, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on April 26, 2023, at the age of 76, in San Angelo, TX. Though she may no longer be with us, her spirit of kindness, love, and generosity lives on through the countless lives she touched.

Judy's life was filled with warmth and happiness, and she shared it with everyone around her. She was born in Del Rio, TX, in December 1946 and graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1965. She married her soulmate, Mickey Phillips, in 1966, and together they had two children, Mark and D'Anna. Judy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, reading, watching animals, and being in nature.

Judy worked for the US Postal Service for many years, and after retirement, she pursued her dream of ranch and game management with her husband. She always had a positive attitude and loved helping others. She volunteered with many organizations, including San Angelo's Project Graduation and Texas Wildlife Brigades, where she mentored young students. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in San Angelo.

Judy's legacy lives on through her family and friends, who will remember her as a kind, selfless, and loving person. She is survived by her husband Mickey Phillips, her children Mark (and Michelle) Phillips of San Antonio, TX, and D'Anna Clayton of McKinney, TX, as well as her grandchildren Kaylee Clayton and Carter Clayton. She also leaves behind her twin sister Joan (and Louis) Ivy of San Angelo, TX, and her brother Scott (and Sue) Briggs of Lawton, OK. She is also survived by many other family members: Jimmy and Claudia Allen; Jennifer, James, Jay and Joan Page; Shane Briggs; Adrienne Briggs, Padraig and Osheen Tobin; Dusty Briggs and Mackenzie Briggs; Tommie, Bill, and Karen Weatherby; Sherry, Jansen and Payne Smith; Lisa, Jaclyn, and Brooke Barrett; Larry, Anne, Matt and Jessica Phillips; Cole and Jessica White; and Katie White. She is preceded in death by her parents Johnnie Jackson and Glen Briggs, and her brother Ronnie Briggs.

Sonya Ann Loose was born July 17, 1940, in Clovis, New Mexico to Dolphus & Mildred Pate. At a young age, Sonya lived with her family on a ranch near Pampa, Texas. The family later moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico where Sonya grew up and met the love her life, Russell Loose.

In high school Sonya’s favorite pastime was “hanging around Loose”, Russell and Sonya were inseparable. After graduating from Carlsbad High School, Sonya and Russell were married in 1958. They enjoyed over 64 years of marriage.

Russell and Sonya welcomed four children into their family: Cindy, Robin, Greg and Amy. Sonya was a true homemaker while raising their children. There was never a time where their home was without home cooked meals and scrumptious recipes all made by Sonya.

Sonya was always a supportive wife for Russell, whether that was assisting in running businesses or entertaining clients. Sonya also was blessed with lifelong friendships that she treasured and nurtured.

Sonya was a talented artist and teacher. She painted anything that would sit still long enough and also taught classes for tole painting. Her dear friend group, the “Tolehouse Tillies” had many adventures that will be told for generations.

Sonya’s greatest treasure in life was her family. She was blessed with nine grandchildren who affectionately called her Nana. She was an expert in loving on the grandkids, teaching them family recipes, and taking them on memorable shopping trips. Sonya had a way of making people feel welcome in her home whether it was a family member or a stranger.

Russell and Sonya were blessed to retire in beautiful Cloudcroft, New Mexico and Build their dream home. Sonya loved their mountain home and enjoyed planning picnics and 4-wheelings trips with their peers. She was always excited for a shopping trip in town, whether it was for turquoise or a fun pair of shoes.

At their home church of Cloudcroft United Methodist, Sonya served in many capacities. She was the bereavement coordinator, and assisted in making sure grieving families were fed and loved on during their times of trial.

Sonya left this world for her heavenly home on April 21, 2023. She is survived by her four children and their families; Cindy Bolen, Robin and Peter Nies, Greg and Julie Loose, Amy and Clay Smith; her grandchildren Jessica (Bolen) Cummings, Hayden Smith, Ryan Nies, Pate Bolen, Jake Loose, Brady Smith, Hogan Loose, Alison (Nies) Burkhalter and Lillie Loose; her great-grandchildren Kayden, June, Samuel, Layten and Charlee. Sonya is also survived by her nieces Pam Bohm and Penni Shruptrine.

Sonya is proceeded in death by the love of her life, Norman Russell Loose, Jr., her parents Dolphus and Mildred Pate, and her sister Doris Bohm.

Services will be held on June 3, 2023, at 11:00am at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church in San Angelo, TX.

Archie Leonard "Al" Smith, 79 of San Angelo passed away on May 9, 2023.

Public viewing will be from 1:00 PM - 8:00 PM Sunday, May 14, 2023 at Robert Massie Funeral Home with family visitation from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, May 15, 2023 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Pastor Bobby Roger and Pastor Kevin McSpadden, officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith was born June 2, 1943 in Goose Creek to John Thomas and Sybil (Jones) Smith. He married the love of his life, Edna, on September 1, 1978. They spent 38 years together before her passing in 2017. Al was a veteran that served in the US Army as a communication specialist during the Vietnam war. He was a purple heart recipient. Al was a heavy equipment operator for Atmos for approximately 30 years retiring in 2006. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time outside.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, John Wayne Smith and Thomas Eugene Smith and his wife.

Al is survived by his three children, Tina Nixon and husband Gary of San Angelo, Tammy Christall and husband Craig of Tuscola, and Rodney Barkis and girlfriend, Sonya Burkhalter of Big Spring; six grandchildren, Trey Thompson, Clayton Duncan and wife Miranda, Jacob Thompson, Casey Christall and wife Emily, Nathan Barkis and Taylor Christall; and three great-granddaughters, Rayne Thompson, Kree Duncan, and Kimber Crossman.

Special thanks to his care giver, Margaret Patterson, Shannon Medical Center, and Hospice of San Angelo for the love and care that was provided.

Gary Lee Wilson, 67, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 7, 2023, in San Angelo. Gary was born June 29, 1955, in San Angelo Texas, to Hamilton Wilson, Jr. and Billie Scurlock Wilson. He grew up in San Angelo and graduated from Central High School. He then served his country honorably in The United States Navy for 15 years. He worked as a corrections officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and retired from there. Gary was a loving son, brother and father who loved his family dearly and loved spending time with them. He was always very cordial to everyone he met and could easily make friends with anyone. Gary had a love of all animals, especially his cats that he cared for during his life. His life and legacy of love will live on in our hearts forever and we will dearly miss him! Gary was preceded in death by his father Hamilton “Ham” Wilson, Jr. He is survived by his mother Billie Wilson, of San Angelo; his daughter, Melanie Wilson, of Lamesa; his son, Josh Wilson and his wife Sharon, of Lubbock, TX; his sisters, Donna Sparks and her husband Jackie, of Mertzon and Sandy Moreland and her husband Al, of San Angelo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held for Gary at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Thompson officiating. The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks and appreciation to Angels Home Care and especially Janice Lawson for all the loving care given to Gary.

George Walter Kennedy Jr. of San Angelo, TX passed away on Sunday May 7th, 2023. He was born on January 9th, 1976, in San Angelo, Texas to Jerlene Barnes-Kennedy and George Walter Kennedy Sr. He is survived in death by Sisters Beverly Felix, Elizabeth Kennedy, Robbie Huyler, and His Brother Kevin Kennedy. His spirit is lived through his 4 Children and 2 grandchildren. To Friends, everyone knows him as Smiley but to Family he is well known by Chicken.

George was very talented in Skills of Art, construction, mechanics, and chef cooking. George was also appraised by the city of San Angelo, Tx for building the well-known park of Kids Kingdom. The Family is most grateful for the heartfelt gratitude for all the thoughts and prayers during this time of grief. He will be greatly missed.
