Bobby Ray Wanoreck

05/08/2023 - 11:13 , by TKing09

Bobby Ray Wanoreck of San Angelo passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on May 4, 2023. He was born on January 20, 1953, to Laurine Wanoreck and Barbara Havlak Wanoreck. Bob is remembered as the man with a big heart.

Growing up in Ballinger, Bob was in the Boy Scouts. Despite catching a field on fire after learning how to light a fire in Cub Scouts, he did go on to earn his rank of Eagle Scout. He was always very proud of that accomplishment. In high school, Bob played football for the Ballinger Bearcats and then was able to continue playing football at Tarleton State University. He eventually earned his master's in education. He taught industrial arts, special education, coached and was also a principal. He genuinely loved everyone from students to his colleagues throughout the many years he spent in education.

In 1982 he was set up on a blind date with Jan Jeschke and from there they sprinted to the altar 6 months later. They had two daughters, Amanda and Chandra that he loved to follow around to all of their events as they grew up. He was then blessed with his son-in-law Josh, whom he loved as his own. Lastly, his greatest blessings became his grandkids.

Bob was a Jesus follower and spent much of his time making sure everyone knew about Jesus. Thank you so much to those who joined alongside his journey throughout the years.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Lester and Aberdeen Jeschke, his brother James Wanoreck, and grandbabies. He is survived by his wife Jan, daughters Amanda Wanoreck and Chandra (Josh) Wascom, two granddaughters Makynlee Wanoreck and Hannah Wascom. His sisters-in-law La Donna Wanoreck and Judy Ford and their children; Brad, Matt, Genna and DeeDee and several great nieces and nephews along with the many cousins he grew up with.

Many thanks to Shannon Encompass Rehab, Gentiva Hospice, Comfort Keepers and his physicians at Shannon!

Memorial Services will be Saturday, May 13th at 10:30 am at Paulann lmpakt.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Paulann Missions or a favorite charity.

Nancy Louette Showers Slaughter

05/04/2023 - 14:55 , by TKing09

Nancy Louette Showers Slaughter passed away, at the age of 86, on April 28,2023 after a brief illness.

Nancy was born on December 28, 1936, in Houston, Texas to loving parents, Edward Andrew Showers and Elizabeth McEachern Showers. The youngest of three daughters, she enjoyed an idealistic childhood filled with the love of a close family, wonderful connections with extended family and friends, with whom she spent many fun-filled hours playing games and sports, developing a lifelong passion for learning, art, and reading, while pursuing an all-important deep and abiding love for Jesus Christ.

Later in life, Nancy would share her wisdom that she considered these pursuits originating in childhood and evident throughout her life--to be the very requirements beneficial to living a long and healthy life: close, personal relationships, intellectual challenges, creative and physical activity, and a rich spiritual life.

1948 brought about several monumental life changes for Nancy with a move to San Angelo following the death of her father three years earlier, and her mother’s remarriage to her stepfather, Louis E. Scherck, who she dearly loved and considered to be a second father. It was here that she made lifelong friends with a close group of women known as the “Concho Pearls.” Even more significantly, Nancy met the love of her life, Lon Slaughter, whom she began dating in the ninth grade.

She graduated high school from The Hockaday School in Dallas, attended the University of Texas where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and transferred to SMU following her engagement to Lon—where he was playing football for the Mustangs. She and Lon married at Emanuel Episcopal Church in 1956 and raised their 4 children mostly in San Angelo, with the exception of short detours to ranches in Brewster and Pecos Counties and Ft. Stockton.

Nancy spent the rest of her life creating a close and loving family of her own with her husband of 66 years and four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She provided her family with a beautiful example of how to live a meaningful and fulfilling life to the end. She read voraciously, travelled extensively, studied art, painted, created beautiful tapestries, played a mean game of tennis, hiked, snow skied and loved to entertain—a true renaissance woman.

A beautiful, elegant woman, Nancy exuded compassion for others, possessing a fearless and positive attitude towards life, and an unforgettable sense of humor. Her exquisite sense of style was evident in every area of her life and enjoyed by her many friends and family every time they walked through the door. Nancy’s innate artistic and creative ability continues to shine through and bless those who enter her beautiful home. She was a blessing to her family, all of whom acclaim her the world’s best wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt.

Nancy was involved in many community projects in San Angelo. She was most proud of helping start Community Bible Study in San Angelo where she continued as a faithful member for many years. More recently, she enjoyed studying the bible as one of the “lady bugs” at Victory Christian Center under Linda Roach. Nancy was also involved with the San Angelo Fine Arts Museum and the University of Texas College of Fine Arts to name a few. She supported many other organizations in San Angelo and elsewhere that had special meaning for her.

Nancy is survived by her devoted husband, Lon; daughters: Libby Slaughter Grafa and husband, Dennis of San Angelo, Susan Slaughter Prickett and husband, Lane of Austin, Cynthia Slaughter McLaughlin and husband, Brian of Midland, and son, Sid Slaughter of Austin; grandchildren: Kyle Grafa (Marah), Sarah Grafa (fiancé-Hayden), Christopher Prickett (Julia), Augustus Prickett, Nancy Prickett, Claire McLaughlin Statton (Monty), Blake McLaughlin (Michelle), Annie McLaughlin Rubalcava ( Logan), 12 great grandchildren; sisters: Ann Showers Butler and Betty Showers Brown, sister-in-law: Joan Slaughter Foster; cousin: Jim Showers (Jan); nieces: Beth Butler Granger (Tom), Kathy Brown Lang (Dan); Lisa Foster; nephews: Roy Butler, Jr., Edward Butler (Renee), John Foster; and many great nieces and nephews.

Heartfelt thank you to Becky Ramirez for the many years of loving care and friendship you have given all of us—you have been such a blessing to our family.

And a special thank you to all the Visiting Angels that provided wonderful care to Nancy in her last weeks: Norma, Susanna, Mabel, Frances, Lupita, and Martha.

A private graveside service was held Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to JPW Learning Center, Victory Christian Center, or the charity of your choice.

Joel D. Sugg

05/03/2023 - 13:55 , by TKing09

Joel David Sugg, 83, of San Angelo, TX passed away peacefully on May 1, 2023.

Growing up, Joel split his time between West Texas and Southern California. He graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth and earned a B.A. in psychology and sociology from Southern Methodist University. He worked as a researcher in the mental health field, where he studied the issues confronting Native Americans. He also worked for Great American Life Insurance. Later in his career, he worked with his beloved brother Calvin to manage their family ranching interests in the San Angelo area.

Joel dedicated his life to public service, philanthropy, and his friends and family. The legacy of his dedication to others is apparent throughout Tom Green County and beyond and is exemplified through leadership roles Joel held in many community organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Mertzon for over 50 years; as President of the Board of Trustees of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, where he helped transform the museum into the award-winning community centerpiece that it is today; and as Secretary of the Tom Green County Library Board of Directors, facilitating the relocation and modernization of the library. Near and dear to Joel’s heart was his service on the Texas State Volunteer Services Council, where he was able to use his training to enhance the lives of people with mental disabilities across the state of Texas. Joel was recognized throughout Texas for his community contributions. In 1989, the Texas House of Representatives awarded Joel the Commissioner’s Award for Volunteer service, and in 2000, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce chose Joel, along with Suzanne, Cal and Donna Sugg, as Citizens of the Year in recognition of their involvement with the opening of the new San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and Education Center.

Everyone enjoyed Joel’s sharp wit and intellect, as well as his ability to put any problem into perspective. He was best friend to many. Joel was happiest at his West Texas ranch where he was always the consummate host.

While Joel’s accomplishments were many, nothing was more important to him than the love he had for his family. He is survived by Suzanne, his wife of nearly 54 years; brother Calvin (Donna); children Erin, Michael (Dorothy), Penelope, Joel Christopher, and Julia (Joshua); 8 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, Calvin Holt and Dora Mapes Sugg.

A private family graveside service was held on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, the Tom Green County Library, or the charity of your choice.
