Wilma Alice (Gemmell) Kidd

06/26/2023 - 10:10 , by TKing09

Mrs. Wilma Alice Gemmell Kidd died June 24, 2023 at The Robert Lee Care Center in Robert Lee.

A private family graveside service was held at Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo. A memorial service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, July 1, 2023 at the Chapel of Baptist Retirement Community, 902 N. Main, San Angelo under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home

Wilma Alice was born to Robert and Ellen Gemmell on January 26, 1922 in Winside, Nebraska. At the age of eleven, Wilma accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour and was baptized in the Carroll Baptist Church. She was a 1939 graduate of Carroll High School. She attended State Teachers College in Wayne, Nebraska, and was awarded Bachelor of Arts by Howard Payne College (now University) in Brownwood, in 1946, and also was awarded Master of Religious Education by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in 1949. She also studied at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and University of Alabama, Birmingham.

Wilma taught rural school; was Educational Secretary at First Baptist Church, Stephenville; secretary at the national headquarters of the Woman's Missionary Union, Southern Baptist Convention in Birmingham, Alabama; and worked in sales of office systems.

Fulfilling a calling to foreign missions, Wilma arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on September 12, 1963 as Associate Missionary of the Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) Southern Baptist Convention. She worked in the Board's financial office in Rio de Janeiro. She sang in church choirs, and in the Association for Singing of Choral Music.

Wilma met Rev. Jesse L. Kidd, a Southern Baptist missionary working in the Baptist School at Volta Redonda in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and they were married October 14, 1967 in St. John's Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. He preceded her in death on September 24, 2020. On March 13, 1969 they were named Associate Missionaries of the Foreign Mission Board, and in July they returned to Brazil.

They served in the state of Santa Catarina in pioneer evangelism. In 1976, they moved to the state of Minas Gerais. There Jesse was Director of Missions of the North Association of Baptist Churches, in the geographical area centered by the city of Montes Claros. The couple lived in that city, the agricultural center for over one million people. Alongside her husband's ministry, she guided children's and adult choirs in the churches.

Missionary service in Brazil continued until 1989 when the Kidds retired to Baptist Retirement Community in San Angelo. They were members of Immanuel Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Mary/Martha Sunday School class. She taught Adult Sunday School classes and sang in Sanctuary choirs and in the San Angelo Symphony Chorale. At Baptist Retirement Community she sang in the Chapel services.

Mrs. Kidd was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; five brothers: Donald Gemmell, Allan Gemmell, John Gemmell, Ralph Gemmell, and Fred Gemmell; four sisters: Elsie Whitney, Jean Smith, Elizabeth Norris, and Jessie Back.

She is survived by nieces and nephews and their families. Her niece, Janel Howard and husband Larry Howard lovingly ministered to Wilma and Jesse. Blessed gratitude to those of Baptist Retirement Community, Robert Lee Care Center and dear friends.

The couple started a fund to aid Americans studying theology. Memorials may be made to the Wilma Alice Gemmell Kidd, and Jesse L. Kidd Endowed Scholarship, c/o Howard Payne University, PO Box 2369, Brownwood Texas, 76804; or to a ministry of your choice.

Theresa Gale McClain

06/23/2023 - 22:47 , by TKing09

Thresa Gale (McRea) McClain, a life long resident of San Angelo, passed away on June 21, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. Born November 6, 1958, to Henry Floyd McRea and Virginia Owen Wilhite, she graduated from Lakeview High School and a year later married her sweetheart, Chip McClain, in 1978. She was a member of the Christadelphian Church. An avid storyteller, her smile and bright eyes lit up a room when she entered, and her greatest passion was her family. Thresa was the one everyone called when they needed a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on. Her strength came from her faith in God and her belief that all "things were possible with God".

We, as her family all admire her acceptance of God's will in her life. She never had self pity nor questioned why. She knew her greatest accomplishment were her children and grandchildren. She cherished her time with them and they cherish her. Thresa had many friends whom she loved and entertained with her stories, infectious laugh and quick wit. She was fun, artistic and faithful. She loved Bunco and to gamble, and was easily conned into an innocent game of poker with family or friends or an occasional trip to the casino.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Mandy and her parents. Those left behind to carry on her legacy are her husband of 44 1/2 years, Chip; son, Skip McClain; sisters, Nancy Varner and Susan Sherwood; grandchildren Chandler McClain, Jake McClain and Lilah Smith-McClain; sister-in-law, Debbye Watson; brother-in-law Stoddard McClain and wife Johnna; sister-in-law Toni Holik; several nieces and nephews; and 15 of the most awesome cousins anyone could ask for. A special thank you goes out to Hospice of San Angelo along with our cousins who made her last months more special and a little easier---from floor installation to cards, flowers, food, reunion, a/c repair, financial needs and extended visits. May God bless each one of you for being there, for showing up and being the kind of family that make our ancestors proud.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Harper Funeral Home. Services will be held on Monday, June 26, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Harper Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Shields Cemetery at 2:00 PM.

Alice "Baynes" Hobbs

06/21/2023 - 09:20 , by TKing09

Alice Baynes (MacLea) Hobbs of San Angelo passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the age of 85. She was born on November 21, 1937, to Thomas Raymond “Mac” MacLea and Mary Lee “Polly” Darby in Baltimore, Maryland. She grew up in the beauty of the Carolinas and later moved to the shores of Maryland where she attended and graduated from Towson High School. Baynes, as she was affectionately known, later graduated from Centenary College for Women in New Jersey when the main professions for women were secretary or teacher. After which, she met and married Marine Sergeant Arthur B. Hobbs on December 19, 1964, in Arlington, Virginia.

Shortly after Arthur returned from Vietnam, the couple and their new daughter moved to Dayton, Texas. There, two more sons were born and another daughter. In 1980, the family moved to San Angelo, Texas. Baynes resided there with her family until her death.

In Dayton, Baynes was a secretary for Chachere Farms and Dr. Robert Seaberg, D.D.S., respectively. When the family moved to San Angelo, she worked at Angelo Clinic Association (now Shannon Clinic). Baynes attended Angelo State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in Education. She taught business at San Angelo Central High School and worked at SAISD Administration for many years before retiring.

Baynes served on the Holy Angels Parish Council, and was active in P.E.O. International Organization for Women, and Concho Valley Retired Teachers Association. She also enjoyed volunteering at Shannon Hospital each week and worked as the Wedding Coordinator at Holy Angels Church.

In retirement, she loved spending time with her family and friends, attending community events, volunteering, and baking. In 1980, when she heard that San Angelo was to be the summer training site for the Houston Oilers, her favorite team, she was ecstatic. Of her many acts of service, she is likely most notably known for the treats she baked and shared with her colleagues, friends, fellow volunteers, and family. She was always looking for a new and interesting recipe to try.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Arthur B. Hobbs of San Angelo; her daughter Brenda (Hobbs) Wellen and husband Don of San Angelo; son Arthur B. Hobbs and wife Robin of Midland; son Andrew B. Hobbs and wife Gemma of Sarasota, Florida; and her daughter, Amanda (Hobbs) Fox and husband Charles “Phil” of Las Vegas, Nevada. Her grandchildren and their spouses include, Ashley N. (Hobbs) Scott and husband Rusty; Andrew B. Hobbs, Jr. and wife Allison; Austin C. Hobbs; Zoe DePrang; Darby (Sutton) Hoschouer and husband Thaddeus; Courtney (Sutton) Anstey and husband Sean; Arthur N. Sutton; Sarah K. Hobbs; and Claire E. Hobbs. Great grandchildren include Kinley Rose Baylor, Brooklyn R. Scott, Brielle N. Scott, Ace W. Connor, and Iris M. Hoschouer. She is also survived by her brother, James D. “Jim” MacLea and family of the North Texas area, and Cousin Ida Lee Wootten and family of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Baynes kept a framed cross-stitched piece next to her dresser from her mother that read, “Baynes – her heart is her roadmap,” and it’s true. She was kind, generous, and always willing to help in whatever way she was capable. She gave of herself until there was nothing left to give. We will miss her all the years of our lives.

Donations can be made in memory of Baynes to the Concho Valley Home for Girls or the Pregnancy Help Center of the Concho Valley.

Mass for Baynes will be held at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Father Santiago Udayar and Deacon Walter Hammons will be the celebrants. The Hobbs family would like to thank all their friends and extended family, former and current colleagues, and those who knew Baynes for your thoughts, prayers, calls, texts, emails, and visits over the last week.

Family and friends can share online condolences at www.harper-funeralhome.com.
