Alva Rosette (Redman) Gibson was born on the family farm near Rowena, Texas, on August 2nd, 1936. She passed peacefully in the early morning hours of February 5th, 2022. Alva was the middle daughter of Alvin Karl Redman and Elsie Hanz Redman; and she grew up in a rural setting where families worked in the fields, picked cotton, and scraped to get by. 

Alva attended school in Miles, where she excelled in spelling—winning the school spelling bee in 2nd grade. She was a band leader in high school and played the drums. She was on the school newspaper staff and was the senior class treasurer. She graduated as Valedictorian of Miles High School in 1953. She went on to take classes at San Angelo College where, as a freshman, she was President of the Commercial Club. She was working as a secretary at a local insurance agency when she met Bill Gibson. He had returned from a tour in Korea and was working for M’System. Their first date was to see “Gone With The Wind.” It was supposed to be a double date, but it turned into a romance. They were married in June of 1955 and had been married 50 years when Bill passed in the fall of 2005. 

Their union was blessed with three children—Sharon, Terry, and Ronnie. Alva enjoyed being at home with her family. When she opened her in-home daycare, Bill was right there helping and playing with the kids when he got off work. This was their life for almost 40 years, and it brought them so much joy. Alva was a great bargain shopper, and she was always looking for goodies for the grandkids. She even expanded her talent to stock the Santa Shop for the students at Austin Elementary for many years. She enjoyed watching game shows on TV, often hollering out the answers. She loved the Texas Rangers and even celebrated her 80th birthday at a Rangers game with the family. 

Above all, Alva loved the Lord. She read her Bible faithfully and prayed for us, and many of you, by name. She was a seasoned Bible School teacher, VBS teacher, and World Bible School lesson grader. She loved her church family here at Southgate and was so thankful for all their calls and cards. She was our rock, and we are proud to be her legacy. 

Alva was preceded in death by many beloved family members including her parents-Alvin and Elsie, her husband-Bill, her sister-Marilyn, and her niece-Renee. 
She is survived by her children—Sharon Yancy (and Bill Kohutek), Terry Gibson (and Phyllis), and Ronnie Gibson. Grandchildren are Jeremy and Candice Yancy, Jordan and Dan Sherman, Tiffany and Patrick Keely, Timothy and Hailey Gibson, Zach and Beth Gibson, Felicia and Anthony Esquivel, Brandon and Paige Gibson, and Madeline and Jarred Doporto. Great-grandchildren are Logan, Addy, Liam, Swayzee, Kolt, Keagan, Hartley, Haddyson, Kaleb, Yancy Joe, Stetson, Sterling, Josiah, Emily Belle, Jase, Lincoln, Darcy, Ally, Michael, Emily, Luke, Adelyn, Evelyn, and J.J. Alva is also survived by her sister-Patricia Parker and sister-in-law and brother-in-law--Jean and Kenneth Gartman. Also precious to Alva are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Family visitation is Friday, Feb. 11th from 4-6 p.m. at Harper’s Funeral Home. The service will be Saturday, Feb. 12th, at 2 p.m. at Southgate Church of Christ. Pall bearers will be the grandsons. A graveside service will follow at Lawnhaven. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to San Angelo Christian Academy, 518 Country Club Road, 76904.

Maria Rosario "Mary Rose" Castaneda, 68, passed away on Tuesday, February 1,2022, at Val Verde Regional Hospital in Del Rio.

Maria was born on January 2, 1954 to Noe and Rebecca Rodriguez in San Angelo. She was always full of life, with a smile and personality that no one would forget. She loved to go shopping and always ready to go out in the town weather it was for a walk, taking the bus just to enjoy the day or even to go for a ride in her car with her dog tootsie. Most of all she loved being silly making memories with her nieces nephews and great grandkids Always saying how much she loved her big beautiful family she also had many friends she made through her life long journey.

Maria is survived by daughters, Grace Rojas Pena, and Rosemary Rojas both of San Angelo and Cynthia Graff of Houston; brothers, Jerry Rodriguez, Fernando Rodriguez and wife Lorina Rodriguez; sisters, Racheal Dominguez, Sally Flores of San Angelo, and Sylvia Chacon and husband Thomas of Del Rio; many nephews; nieces; great nephews; nieces; along with 13 grandchildren and 56 Great Grandchildren of San Angelo & Midland. Maria is Proceeded in death by her parents; late husband, Joe Castaneda; brother-in-law, Adam Flores; and longtime friend, Mercedes "Mercy" Gonzales.

Ralph “Glynn” King Jr. went to be with the Lord on Monday January 31, 2022. He was 73 years old.

He was born in San Angelo to Ralph and Doris Lewellen King, both of whom have preceded him in death. He is survived by one sister, Martha King, his wife Nancy along with his four children and her four children. Trey King and his wife Angela, Ellen Wyatt and husband Todd, Kaci Follis and husband Lynn, Elizabeth Feagin and husband Doug, Katrina Rolen, Harmony Hattersley, Happy Hattersley, and Rebecca Page. Glynn, lovingly called Papaw, also leaves behind 12 grandchildren. 

Glynn worked hard during his life which took him to many places. One of which was outside of San Antonio which is where he met and married Nancy. Her love and devotion for him these last three hard years during his decline are appreciated more than words can say. I truly believe his time with her were some of the happiest years of his life. Some of his favorite things in life were his kids, hunting, baseball, golfing, the beach, his dogs, and gathering with family at the farm. I know that without a doubt he deeply loved his family and wanted nothing but the best for each one of them. 

Over these last three years many friends have expressed their love and sadness over how our dad, Glynn, was doing. Your kindness and well wishes had a tremendous impact in knowing how much he was cared for in the community. 

The family of Glynn King would like to thank the staff at Cedar Manor. What you do for your residents is very important and appreciated. We would also like to thank Kindred Hospice for the family.  Currently there are no plans for a formal service but rather a small gathering at the farm later in the Spring. Louis Hernandez Polanco, 92, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at his home surrounded by family.

Mr. Polanco was born June 21, 1929 in Del Rio to Severo and Inez Hernandez Polanco. Louis married Dora Elia Polanco on June 30, 1959 in Pocatello, Idaho. She preceded him in death on November 2, 2016. Louis was known as the little "Tool Man: on Bell St. corner. He loved to fix, paint, and sell tools.

Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca Flores and husband Harvey of San Angelo; three sons, Joel Polanco, Raul Polanco and wife Delia, and Erlu Polanco and wife Norma all of San Angelo; numerous grandchildren; and great grandchildren. Louis is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Victoria Polanco; and a brother, Perfecto Polanco.

Norma Ferguson, 101, of San Angelo, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022, at her home. 

She was born May 11, 1920 in Amarillo to Joseph Robertson and Charlotte (McNeely) Robertson and she had seven siblings. Norma married Thurlow Ferguson August 17, 1935 and they lived in Slaton where their 3 daughters were born. Thurlow was a railroad engineer for Santa Fe which brought them to San Angelo at various times. Thurlow passed away on December 8, 1967 and Norma soon moved to San Angelo and started working at Ethicon in 1968 as a handwinder where she had numerous years of perfect attendance until she retired in 1992. Norma was lovingly called "Granny" by her family and was known for making delicious pies. While she stopped making pies after she turned 100, she continued to oversee her great granddaughters, teaching them how to make the pies. She enjoyed working in her yard and growing roses. She also loved trains and has them scattered throughout her house in various forms. She was a strong woman who loved her family and had fun celebrating her 100th birthday while in quarantine and then her 101st birthday with her family. Granny could be found in her recliner wearing her fuzzy cardigan and heated blanket on any Texas day. As a young girl, Norma professed her faith in Jesus Christ and lived her life loving Him. She was a member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church. 

Survivors include daughters, Charlotte Tounget of Bronte and Lynora Bowers and husband Alferd Bowers of Canyon Lake; grandchildren, Savoy Hart and wife Julie of Odessa, Tammy Herriage and husband Albert of Canyon Lake, Randy Bowers and wife Dawn of Springfield, Missouri, Doug Tounget and wife Dawn of Bronte, Jann Countess and husband Chad of San Angelo, Jayson Hart and wife Amanda of Odessa, and Greg Bowers and wife Erin of Bend, Oregon; 16 great grandchildren, Trevor, Haley, Hagen, Chelsea, Cambri, Carson, Ali, Madelyn, Logan, Audrey, Elise, Abigail, Dustin, Kimberly, Jason and Gabriel; 12 great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great granddaughter; making 6 generations; Sister, Myra Robertson of Clovis, New Mexico; numerous nieces and nephews. 
She is preceded in death by her daughter, LaRue Hart, October 23, 2019; sons-in-law, Billy Tounget, September 13, 2016, Cecil Hart, April 5, 2018; and 6 siblings.

Robert A. McEver, 75, passed into his heavenly reward on January 30, 2022, surrounded by family at the Vitas Hospice in San Antonio, after a three-month long battle with cancer.

"Bob" was born on February 20, 1946, in Boca Raton, Florida, to Alton and LaNell (Howard) McEver. After his father completed Army Air Corps service in Florida, the family moved to Keesler Airforce Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. His school years were spent in San Angelo, where he graduated from Central High School in 1964. He worked at the family restaurant, McEver's Ranch House, during high school and college. He attended Baylor University and graduated from Angelo State University with a degree in accounting in 1976. While attending Angelo State, Bob served as president of the Delta Sigma Pi Collegiate Professional Fraternity in Commerce and Business Administration. After working for GTE for several years in Dallas and San Angelo, he moved to Georgetown, obtained his real estate broker's license, and sold real estate in the Lake Travis area with his father, Alton McEver. Subsequently, he worked in corporate real estate tax consulting in San Antonio and later continued selling real estate in the San Antonio area before his death.

Bob is survived by his wife of fifty years, Betsy (Daniel) McEver; his brother, Dan McEver, Sr. and wife Judy of Evansville, Indiana; his sister-in-law, Margaret Scott and husband Randy of Fredericksburg; his nephew, Dan McEver, Jr. and wife Stephanie of Collierville, Tennessee; nieces, Melissa (McEver) Jones and husband Briceson of Greensboro, North Carolina; Robyn Bonner and husband Clay of Carrollton; and Mindy England and husband Walker of Plano; step nephew, Brad Cook and wife Laura of Evansville, Indiana; and step niece, Jennifer Turpin and husband Ryan of Indianapolis, Indiana; and god-daughter, Jennifer Segura of San Antonio; he also leaves behind many cousins and great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

James Frederick (Jim) Duke, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully after a gallant battle against esophageal cancer on February 1, 2022 in San Angelo, Texas surrounded by family and friends at the age of 65. 

Born in Austin on the 15th of November 1956, to Bob and Virginia Duke, Jim was the youngest of the three Duke children. After spending a few years in Houston the Duke’s returned to Austin and Jim spent his formative years on Hillbrook Circle keeping the neighborhood entertained with his antics. Bob and Virginia may have even received a call or two after Jim fired a “toy cannon” annually on Thomas Jefferson’s birthday celebration. Jim’s love of life and desire to live life to the fullest started at an early age! 

Jim developed a love for the outdoors on the family ranch in Johnson City where he spent many weekends with his grandparents, Pops & Honey. This is where he also first developed his lifelong interest in gardening. 

He attended Murchison Junior High and graduated from Anderson High School in Austin in 1976 where he lettered in football. Jim had lifelong friends from Murchison and Anderson, and loved getting together with his old friends whenever possible, especially at the Murchison Breakfasts at the Dart Bowl. Many made the trip to San Angelo in the past few months and he cherished those visits. 
After graduation Jim attended Southwest Texas State and later the University of Texas at Austin. After college Jim began a long and lustrous career in the office of the State of Texas’ Comptroller of Public Accounts where he assisted many a Texas taxpayer on a myriad of issues. After retiring from the state he successfully started a Texas severance tax consulting business that he operated until his death. 
Jim was an avid outdoorsman and some of his fondest memories were spent on his lease in Menard with family and friends as well as those spent bass fishing with his son, Wes, on numerous Texas lakes. He and Wes also ventured to East Texas to participate in gator hunts, and Jim had the boots to prove it (not to mention an eight foot gator that at one time hung on his living room wall)! 

In his younger days Jim would also make a trek to East Texas for a few sacks of “mud bugs” for his annual crawfish boil. Those annual boils were a fixture in Hyde Park for a number of years and were much enjoyed by all those in attendance. 

Jim was also an enthusiastic baseball fan and spent many a summer on the diamond coaching Wes’ teams. Jim also enjoyed taking Wes and his daughter, Ashley, on summer vacation to “Port A” and meeting up with Barbara’s family and letting the kids get to know their cousins. Jim was a good family man and loved holidays and vacations spent with family. 

Jim was blessed to meet and marry Tracey Rink Ferguson later in life. They were wed on May 23, 2015, at a lovely outdoor service in Kingsland. Jim’s spirit shone brightest in this wonderful relationship. After marriage they lived in San Angelo where Jim became a loyal member and served on the vestry as Treasurer of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Jim and Tracey loved to travel and especially enjoyed their time spent on river cruises in Europe and fly fishing on the San Juan River. They also enjoying cooking together and their kitchen creations were something to behold. Jim also had one of the best tended gardens in San Angelo where many neighbors enjoyed his bounty.  

He is preceded in death by parents Robert and Virginia Duke, and brother, Robert, Jr. Jim is survived by wife, Tracey; son Wesley James Duke of Austin; daughter Ashley Nicole Duke of Austin; stepson William Randolph Ferguson of San Angelo; sister and brother-in-law Barbara Duke Stryker and husband, Michael, of Bellaire, TX and his beloved nieces and their families.

A funeral service will be at 11:00 am Monday, February 7 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 3 South Randolph, in San Angelo with a reception to follow at Riverview Restaurant, 880 W Ave D. A celebration of Jim’s life will also be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 12 at the K-Oaks Clubhouse, 7000 Bar-K Ranch Road, Lago Vista, TX. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jim’s life. Karen Marie Bingham (née Goeres), beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and aunt, passed away on January 30, 2022 at age 78. 

Karen was born to Katherine (née Hess) and Frank Goeres on a farm outside of Lemmon, SD on March 18, 1943. She was the third of four children. After high school, she moved to Rapid City, SD to train in cosmetology. It was there she met her love, Richard “Corky” Bingham, whom she married on July 27, 1964. Together, they set out on a life of adventure courtesy of the United States Air Force. Her husband’s career took them to Biloxi, Mississippi; Misawa, Japan; Syracuse, New York; Chicksands, England; Heraklion, Greece; and San Angelo, Texas. She loved being part of the military community and developed friendships that spanned a lifetime, and often felt more like family. 

In 1965, Karen and Corky welcomed their first child, son Scott, while living in Japan. And in 1971, they added to their family with daughter Stacey while living in England. Karen enjoyed practicing sports with Scott as a young child and had much pride in watching him play throughout high school. She taught Stacey all she knew about baking, sewing, puzzles and gaming. She was a proud mom, to say the least. But it wasn’t until grandchildren were added to the mix that she felt complete. As a grandmother, Karen found her true purpose in life, doting and caring for her grandchildren with energy and unconditional love. 

Karen was known far and wide for her caramel nut rolls — there wasn't a person around who didn’t fall in love with them at first bite. Karen loved to have a good time and when she got together with her sisters, the laughter was loud and never-ending. With their unique family bond, she and her siblings and their partners traveled the world together late into life. 

Karen is survived by son Scott Bingham; daughter Stacey Bingham Doyle and husband Joe Doyle; sisters Betty (Wilmer) Hermann and Susan (Robert) Jones; and four grandchildren, Stormie Bingham (21), Ashlie Bingham (18), Katie Doyle (14), and Patrick Doyle (14). She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Richard Bingham; parents, Frank and Katherine Goeres; and brother Donald Goeres. 

A celebration of Karen’s life will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 26 at Harper Funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to a charity that is near and dear to your heart.

Russell Carl Gest, 79, of San Angelo passed away, Sunday, January 30, 2022. 

Russell was born August 20, 1942 at Lakewood, Ohio to Clyde Russell and Ruth Elizabeth Wright Gest. He was the oldest of seven children. He along with his faithful sidekick Boots, the English Sheppard, worked in the family greenhouse. They regularly drove into Cleveland to sell their produce. He attended schools in Ohio and, upon graduation, joined the Army, where he served for 6 years. While in the Army, he qualified as an expert Marksman with a rifle. When he was asked to be a sniper, he stated that he would rather help people. While in the Army his roommate/coworker, Seth Daniel, began studying the Bible which led to him to making the most important decision of his life, becoming a Christian. After discharge, he came to Texas and began pursuing higher education. He earned his Associates in Science at Lubbock Christian College, Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science at Abilene Christian College/University.

During his studies at Abilene Christian, he met the love of his life, Mary Sue Howdeshell. They married on August 21, 1971 in Houston, Texas. Russ and Mary started their lives together in Abilene, Texas. They went on to live in Lubbock, Texas where their two daughters were born. After they moved to Paris, Texas, they welcomed their third child, a son. In 1986, they moved to San Angelo, Texas. Using his master’s degree in microbiology, he began working in hospitals. He worked in labs, infection control and eventually quality assurance. After years of working in hospitals, he changed direction and went back to school for his teacher’s certification. Russ had many hobbies ranging from watching/coaching his children in soccer, being a member of the San Angelo Blues Society, and watching all Cleveland sports teams and of course everything THE Ohio State University. GO BUCKS! He was a faithful member and deacon at Southgate Church of Christ where he continued his legacy of providing the Lord’s supper to shut-ins and others unable to attend service. In the past 20 years, he was involved in medical missions, primarily in Central America. He was instrumental in developing an educational program to monitor and treat people with diabetes in Belize and Ecuador. He also had the opportunity to travel to Mexico, Haiti and Nicaragua for mission work. He enjoyed leading devotionals at San Angelo Christian Academy. He had a huge heart and loved his family, especially his grandkids. 
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Carol Nelson. 

Mr. Gest is survived by his wife Mary Gest; three children Melissa Gest, Laura Behrens and husband Marty, Allen Gest and wife Whitney; five Grandchildren McKenna Grace Behrens, Hunter Scott Behrens and wife Leah, Halli Kay Gest, Jaci Claire Gest, Jaxon Kade Gest; five Siblings Beverly Haag, Margie Potts, Rollie Gest and wife Kathy, Curtis Gest, and Norma Gest; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins; along with his beloved furry, snack time partner Allie “Gator”. 

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to North Belize Medical Missions or San Angelo Christian Academy.
