Werner Berthold Henke

03/29/2022 - 16:23 , by live

Werner Berthold Henke, 99, of Fredericksburg, Texas passed away on March 26th, 2022.

Werner was born on October 9th, 1922 in Fredericksburg to Edwin and Olga Henke who brought him home to the family ranch in a horse and buggy. He lived in the same house, built by his parents in 1918, his entire life. He was baptized at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg in 1923 where he was confirmed in 1936. Werner rode his horse, Kitty, to Wolf Creek School which he attended from 1928 to 1936. In 1940, he graduated from Tivy High School in Kerrville where he was active in FFA and honored as a Lone Star Farmer. He then graduated from Schreiner Institute in Kerrville in 1942.

Werner loved flying in his Piper Cub and later, his Aeronca Champion. He soloed on June 25th, 1944 and was active in fly-ins, excelling in flying competitions.

He married Lorene Mittendorf on September 14th, 1947. Their first son Clyde was born in 1949, and second son Doyle was born in 1952. Werner and Lorene were married for 63 years until her death in 2010. His life centered around the ranch and his family. Werner was a consummate life-long rancher, highly respected by his peers who frequently sought his advice. He raised sheep and goats, and was known for producing superior commercial cattle. He continued to run the family cattle business until his death. He loved to hunt and always looked forward to the first day of the season. He processed his own homemade smoked venison sausage and jerky, and shot wild turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner. The family grew up enjoying his barbequed mutton from his custom fed lambs, and steaks and burgers from his cattle.

Werner had a wonderful sense of humor. When asked for his email address, he would reply, “I don’t have a computer, I use a No. 2 pencil and a Red Chief Tablet”. People sometimes asked if he had lived in the same house his entire life. His reply would be “Not yet!”.

Werner was active in Fredericksburg Jaycees, was a director of the Kerr County Livestock Show, served as President of the Hill Country Hereford Association, and as Vice President of the Texas Hereford Association. He served on the church council at Zion Lutheran Church in Kerrville and was proud to serve on the building committee during the church renovation in the 1960’s. He was a charter member of the Board of Directors of Hill Country Memorial Hospital during its construction.

Werner was predeceased by his wife, Lorene, his parents, Edwin and Olga, his sisters, Agnes Lundstedt, Caroline Henke, and Margaret Henke. He is survived by his sons, Dr. Clyde Henke and wife Pam Medlin Henke of San Angelo, Texas, and Doyle Henke and wife Nan of Fredericksburg, Texas, and his grandchildren, John August Henke of Ventura, California, and Meredith Henke of Tucson, Arizona.

June Turner Doggett

03/28/2022 - 10:30 , by TKing09

June Doggett left this world to be with her Lord and Savior in the early hours of March 24, 2022, succumbing to complications from post-COVID-related neurologic problems and dementia. June suffered a series of seizures and strokes beginning in mid-November, and received loving care from her friend and physician, Dr. Ty Hughston and New Haven Assisted Living along with Concho Hearts Hospice. June was a long-time resident of San Angelo, Fort Worth, Abilene, and Water Valley, Texas. June was a former Vestry member and active member at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Barbara June was born October 28, 1935, at St. John’s Hospital in San Angelo and was raised with her older brother, Dr. Percy R. “Bud” Turner at the family ranch near Water Valley. Her parents were Percy William Turner and Gertrude Rau Turner. June spent her youth engaged in reading and tending to her ranch animals as did most ranch girls of that era. Naturally, she learned to drive at an early age and chauffeured her father on his trips across west Texas to inspect horses for registration as American Quarter Horses. She attended Water Valley Schools and skipped the 2nd and 6th grades. She later drove herself, commuting daily, to San Angelo to attend her last 2 years of high school graduating in the Class of ’52, Central High School. At age 16, she went to Columbia, Missouri and attended Stephens College. Unfortunately, she was stricken with a neurological illness and returned home during her freshman year. She was infirmed at the San Angelo Hospital Polio ward for several months. She later resumed studies and obtained her associate degree from San Angelo College (now ASU), thanks to loving assistance from classmates.

She moved to Abilene, Texas in 1955 and served as bookkeeper and executive secretary to the owner of a prominent drilling company. During that time, she met a young Marine aviator who was founder of an oilfield logging and service company, Glenn Doggett. Glenn called on his customer’s secretary numerous times and their courtship was short and sweet. On December 29, 1956, in front of her parents’ fireplace at the Water Valley ranch, she and Glenn exchanged marriage vows. During their first years of marriage, June managed books for Glenn’s new service company, Go Services, Inc. in Abilene. In February of 1958, they welcomed their one and only child, Scott Turner Doggett.

In 1969, pursuant to Glenn’s promotion, the family moved to Fort Worth. There, her servant’s heart glowed with years of volunteering for the Junior League, at Trinity Episcopal Church and serving as a sport team and class mom at Trinity Valley School. There were few years where the family had Scott as the only child in the house. June made sure that The Doggett House was an “Open House” for numerous guests, friends, and relatives.

One of June’s greatest joys was building her dream home on the family ranch at Water Valley and moving there in 1980. As Glenn commuted to Abilene, and DFW, he was gone a considerable amount chasing his oil business near and far. June was very content reading her books and interacting with her parents, Bud, Helen and the rest of the ranch family. She also loved her animals: several poodles, three Rhodesian Ridgebacks, barn cats, peacocks, and her Quarter Horses.

In her last years, she thoroughly enjoyed developing a relationship with her grandson, Turner, as he completed his undergraduate studies at Angelo State University. She was always a big fan and supporter of her son Scott in their cutting horse development and competitions.

June was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; her parents, Percy and Gertrude Turner; and, her cousin R.A. “Hap” Canning. She is survived by her son Scott Turner Doggett and wife, Carol of Dallas; her grandson, Turner Anderson Doggett of Redmond, WA; her brother Bud and his wife, Lynn of Rancho Murieta, CA; her sister-in-law Helen Turner of San Angelo; niece, Susan Turner Knost of Carthage, MO; nephew, Dr. Tim Robert Turner and his wife, Judy of Water Valley and San Angelo; cousin, Kaye Pfluger of San Angelo; cousin, Charles “Buddy” Pfluger and wife, Helen of Eldorado, TX; cousin, William Lee Hitch and wife, Elaine of Double Oak, TX; cousin Sally McIntosh of Austin; cousin, Steve Phillips and wife Beth of Fort Worth; cousin, Jane Young of Tucson, AZ; cousin, Elizabeth Kupersmith and husband, Tony of Alexandria, VA; cousin, Dabney Abel and husband, Ric of Dallas; grand nieces and nephews: Tara Turner and husband Wes Langerhans of San Angelo; Amanda Turner and husband Dr. Jeremy Horak of Water Valley; Jamie Steen-McCoy and husband Levi of Carthage, MO; JimBob Steen II and wife Ashleigh of Fort Worth; Jesse Steen and fiancé, Justin Geisinger of Wann, OK; and many good friends and dedicated caregivers, especially Missy Flores. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church Youth Ministry, Concho Hearts Hospice, NCHA (National Cutting Horse Association) Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., April 14, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 3 S. Randolph St., San Angelo, TX.
