Bobby Jewel Townsend

01/04/2023 - 08:33 , by TKing09

Bobby Jewel Townsend Sr was born June 1, 1955 in Dallas to Preston Charles and Jimmie Lee Townsend. To some he was Uncle Bobby, but to most Jugga.

Celebration of life services will be 4:00 PM Saturday, January 7, 2023 at New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

He was raised in San Angelo, attended Blackshear Elementary and also attended Lee Jr. High School. He joined the military, serving in the Army for a time, was a cook, and but there was a greater duty that defined his time on this Earth. Jugga's life's work revolved around being an amazing husband, and an outstanding dad. There is no debate on either, absolutely unmatched father and husband.

Let it be known, Bobby Jewel Townsend Sr definitely considered himself a "world class pitmaster" in addition to being the great man, father, and husband he lived to be.

Jugga was the baby boy among his siblings. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Preston and Jimmie Lee Townsend. His brothers and sisters, Dorothy, Willie, Willa, David, Robby, and Preston (Cooter). Baby boy will be welcomed, they have been waiting. His family also includes several nieces and nephews: Debra, Paul, Paula, Angelica, Tony, and Courtney and Quint.

Bobby Townsend, Sr. is survived by the love his life, queen, and wife of 46 years, Vanessa Townsend. There is nothing in his lifetime he cherished more. Together, they gave life and raised three children, Marquette Walker, Bobby Towsend Jr, and Kevin Townsend. Vanessa and Bobby are also the proud grandparents of D'Nasha Walker, Marquette Walker Jr, Ja'Marques Walker, Khloe Walker, Kaleb Walker, Kendrick Washington, Alex Gonzalez, Allan Townsend, Avery Townsend, Kevin Townsend Jr., Aleigha Townsend, and Kashlyn Townsend. Also, a great grandfather to D'Arius Raeshawn Hall I know he would love give mention to his "daughters", Sherri Townsend, Latresia Sherrell, and Shawna Walker. Special mention to Nakia and Tess.

Bobby aka Jugga will be greatly missed. But know and take comfort that his mission in life has been fulfilled. There is no greater husband. There is no greater father. Remember Bobby Jewel Townsend Sr as a great man.

Isabelle Catherine "Kate" Nelson

01/02/2023 - 09:01 , by TKing09

Isabelle Catherine “Kate” Nelson, nee Van Wingen, peacefully passed away Saturday, December 17, 2022, in San Angelo, two days after what would have been her 71st wedding anniversary.

Kate was born March 14, 1933, in Detroit, MI, to James and Isabelle Van Wingen. She married Gordon Nelson on December 14, 1951, just prior to his deployment to Korea during the war. With their children, James, John, and Paul, the Nelsons lived in various states including Florida, South Carolina, New York, and Texas, as well abroad in Japan, England, and Crete, Greece, the latter of which they enjoyed so much that they extended their tour there. Their time in England was during Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee of 1977, a four-month celebration that likely contributed to Kate’s affinity for the British monarchy.

Kate was a dutiful military wife and mother during Gordon’s 30 years with the Air Force, traveling with him everywhere she could and prioritizing the care of her family as one would a career. During Gordon’s first deployment, Kate, a first-time mother, rushed their newborn son to the ER, where doctors discovered he had a life-threatening birth defect requiring immediate surgery. Even during challenging times such as these, and despite tragedies that would break most people, Kate persevered with dignity and strength.

Beneath her grit, tart wit, and fierce independence, all of which she maintained through the end, was a tenderness some were fortunate to know. She was fond of animals, particularly cats, and took in her share of strays throughout the years. When the family moved from England to Texas, they bought a seat on the plane just for their rescued pet cat.

Kate worked outside the home for the first time when the family moved to San Angelo, as a fitness instructor at the YMCA and, later, Figure World. Always an avid reader, she worked at B. Dalton’s Book Store in the mall until it closed and at Hastings Books, Music & Video until its closure when she was in her 80s.

For more than 40 years, Kate was a dedicated Fort Concho volunteer and a fixture at Officers Quarters No. 3 during its annual Christmas celebration. Each year she decorated the tree, dressed in period costume, and greeted visitors. In her final days, she reflected fondly on the lifelong relationships formed with her fellow volunteers, most of whom have passed.

Kate was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Marjorie; sons, Paul and John Nelson; and husband, Gordon.

She is survived by her son, James Nelson (Michele) of Waukesha, Wisconsin; granddaughter Emily Negron (Luis), and their son, Ezra, of Waukesha; granddaughter Melanie Nelson of Waukesha; granddaughter Rebecca Nelson Sankey and family of San Angelo; special friends, Diane and Ron Hoelle, and Lynn Bradshaw, all of San Angelo; her beloved feline companion, Oscar; and several other family members and friends.

The family extends a special thanks to Hospice of San Angelo and San Angelo Nursing and Rehab.

Please consider a donation in Kate’s memory to the fort, ASPCA, West Texas Counseling & Guidance’s Zero Suicide Prevention or LOSS groups or your favorite charity.

Jerrell Ray Preas

12/31/2022 - 14:33 , by TKing09

It is with incalculable sorrow that we announce the death of Jerrell Ray Preas, known to most as “Jerry”. He was born on September 6, 1955 in San Angelo and passed away on December 29, 2022 at age 67 after a wearying battle with prostate cancer.

As a youth, his family was in the Air Force. If you hung around Dad for very long, you’d hear hilarious stories of winters in Cape Cod, bicycle-riding in Niagra Falls, and bowling in Japan. He entered the Air Force too, and served 4 years as a mechanic, working on C130s. He was a proud American to the very core.

The place he loved most, though, was home --San Angelo. He grew roots here and never wanted to leave.

He met Cindy Mills at the River Park Apartments, and married her on Valentine’s Day 1981; He made her laugh every day. Their daughter Chelsea was born in ’88, and she is a carbon copy of her dad.

Jerry worked at GTE and retired from Verizon’s Accounts Payable department after 29 ½ years.

He was a gifted acoustic guitarist, who loved music with a passion. He filled our lives with rock-and-roll, folk, and country music-- whether he was playing it himself, or blasting it over the stereo.

He was a man of many hobbies. Some nights, he would have a guitar on his lap, a strategy game on the computer, and Fox News on TV simultaneously. He was our news commentator, our historian, our genealogist. He was the king of wit and sarcasm, and he was knowledgeable about nearly everything.

To Chelsea, he was a devoted father who could not possibly have made more of an impact. The hole he leaves behind is vast indeed. He was her confidante and hero.

There are no words to describe the loss of someone so fundamentally special and good. He gave the best advice, and shared his humor and wisdom with the people he knew. He made our lives better and he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia Preas and his father Truman Ray Preas. He is survived by his daughter Chelsea Preas, mother Ida Preas, brother Lyndon Preas, and sister Susan Crawford, nieces and nephews, and a host of in-laws and “outlaws” (as he fondly referred to them.)

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

A graveside will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 2, 2023 at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
