Bryce Stone Thieman

12/31/2022 - 14:29 , by TKing09

We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, Bryce Stone Thieman, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on December 29, 2022, after a brief but fierce battle with cancer.

Bryce was born in San Angelo, Texas to Jean (McCandless) and Hugh Lamar Stone, Jr. on June 12, 1949. She grew up in Houston and graduated from Lamar High School. While growing up in Houston, she relished playing tennis at the Houston Country Club. Bryce, with her characteristic humor and humility, loved sharing the story of how she stumbled into playing a doubles match against George H.W. Bush and James Baker III.

Bryce grew up in Houston, but her heart was always in West Texas. After briefly attending Bradford College in Haverhill, Massachusetts, she quickly returned to Texas to escape the snow and cold and be closer to family and the family ranch. She then enrolled at Texas Tech University, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. While at Texas Tech, she studied abroad at the Universidad de las Américas in Mexico City, Mexico. She continued her education at Trinity University in San Antonio, earning a Master of Arts degree in Spanish. Following school, Bryce worked for the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and later moved to San Angelo to be closer to her grandparents, the McCandlesses and the Stones. She taught at schools in Eola and Christoval and kept up her tennis playing at San Angelo Country Club.

On December 31, 1982, Bryce married Mark Havins Thieman of San Angelo, Texas. They were married for just two days shy of 40 years. Mark and Bryce built a family of three children, Ashley, Joe, and Drew. Her children were the center of her world. Attending their activities—including swim and gymnastics meets—and, more recently, her grandchildren’s activities filled her calendar. Her grandchildren adored her and considered her one of their best adventure and play mates. “Police” chases and “bear” hunts with her grandson, Parker, were some of her specialties. She cherished family and friends and always looked forward to hosting at the family ranch for celebrations and holidays, especially for Labor Day dove hunts and Thanksgiving.

Bryce was a woman of deep and abiding faith and a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, serving in various capacities over the years, including on the Vestry, the Altar Guild, and St. Catherine’s Guild. She also regularly attended Father Bill Wright’s Bible Study Class and headed up the Wednesday Night Cooks for a number of years. Although she was a steadfast Episcopalian, she harbored a lifelong love and respect for the artwork and imagery of Latin American Catholicism and history.

Never one to sit still, Bryce’s ranching and conservation interests led her to become a member of the Texas Wildlife Association and serve for a time as Treasurer of the Tom Green County Prescribed Burn Association. She was also a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of San Angelo and a member of the 20th Century Club. All who knew her knew her as unassuming, modest, fun- and dance-loving, warm, laid-back, and always gracious. Whether greeting old friends or new, she wanted to hear your story or what was new with you. A quick laugh and warm hug, sprinkled with a few self-depracating comments, were never far behind.

Bryce was preceded in death by her daughter, Bryce Drew Thieman, her parents, Jean and Hugh Lamar Stone, Jr., and her grandparents, Velma and Bryce McCandless and Lucile March and Hugh Lamar Stone. Bryce is survived by her husband, Mark, her son Joe and wife Casey Thieman of San Angelo, stepdaughter Ashley and husband Travis Phillips of Austin, grandchildren Lily and Landon Phillips and Parker and Camryn Thieman, her brother Hugh Lamar (Che) Stone III and wife Bitsy of San Angelo, nephews Hugh Lamar Stone IV and wife Francesca of San Antonio and Preston Stone and wife Sarah of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and grand nephews and nieces Hugh, Phillip, and Josephine Stone and Sophia Stone.

The celebration of Bryce’s beautiful life will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in San Angelo on January 7, 2023, at 10:00 am. If you wish to give a donation in Bryce’s honor, please consider the Drew Thieman Young Musicians Fund or a Memorial Offering at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Terry Duane Long

12/27/2022 - 09:32 , by TKing09

Terry Duane Long, 71, gained his heavenly reward Tuesday, December 20, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Due to the holiday season, family visitation will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at San Angelo First Church of the Nazarene, 3354 W. Beauregard from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and a Celebration of Life service to follow on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 10:00 AM officiated by Rev. Harold Watkins, and Rev. Joni Lancaster at Freedom Fellowship Church, 342 S. Chadbourne St. San Angelo.

Terry was born March 6, 1951 in Ballinger to Jack and Virginia Long. He grew up in San Angelo, and was a 1969 graduate of Central High School and later attended Gulf Coast Bible College. Growing up, Terry worked at multiple grocery stores. His true calling was sales, where he started with Martha White-Gladiola Baking Company, and finally spent 33 years as a Senior Account Agent with Allstate Insurance when he retired. Three years after retiring, Terry, who was a people person, came out of retirement and went to work for Window Depot of West Texas during the last nine years of his life.

While working at Skaggs-Albertson's, Terry met the love of his life, Nancy Jo DeWees and as Terry recalls, Nancy put him in a half-nelson over the hood of his Chevelle, and said either we get married or we split forever. After a 90-day courtship, they were married December 4, 1971, and spent 51 of the best years of their lives together. In 1974, they welcomed their first child Brantley Jon "BJ", and in 1977, Emily Nichole was born.

In 1976, Terry recommitted his life to the Lord which led him to serve in numerous ministries in the Church of the Nazarene. Those ministries included various board and advisory positions, but his most loved position was the Minister of Music for 40 plus years. With his love of music, he spent many years singing in the San Angelo Symphony, Majesty, and Heirborne trio. His relationship with the Lord being the top priority, allowed him to serve on the Local Church Board, Dare to Care Ministries, District Advisory Board, Southern Nazarene University Board of Trustees, Layman's Retreat committee, and the Superintendent of Grounds for the local church.

With Terry's involvement in the church, he and Nancy traveled the world serving as the hands and feet of Jesus through various mission trips. After giving his financial security to the Lord, Terry's insurance business prospered, making it a successful agency where he received numerous local and regional sales achievements. Terry was known as "The Good Hands Man"!
As a result of many years of hard work, he sold his business and built his dream, "The Farm" on 7 acres in Miles beginning in 2005. From pasture land, a new creation was born, complete with a pecan orchard, and eventually their forever home where they loved to cook and entertain. He and Nancy made a great team working together to build the life they loved.

Survivors include his loving wife, Nancy; son, BJ Long and wife Jenn of Greensboro, North Carolina; daughter, Nichole Bartz and husband Jeremy of Wall; grandchildren, Kaylee Bartz and Landree Bartz and Amos Long. Other survivors include a brother, Ron Long and wife Teresa; nieces, Kim Hiler and husband Teddy, Christy Landsdale and husband Norman all of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, and Angie Yu and husband Henry of Castle Rock, Colorado; nephews, Jack DeWees and wife Nicole of Franksville, Wisconsin; and James DeWees of Liberty, Missouri. Terry also has numerous cousins, great nieces, nephews, and many special friends he considered family.

The family would like to thank Dr. Raj Cheruku, Dr. Kenny Jastrow, and Dr. Jaffer Ajani, and his care teams from Shannon Oncology, MD Anderson, Enhabit Home Health and Gentiva Hospice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home. All floral arrangements may be sent to Robert Massie Funeral Home by Friday, January 6, 2023. Memorial contributions may be made to San Angelo First Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, 3354 W. Beauregard, San Angelo, Texas 76904.

Daniel A. Martinez

12/27/2022 - 09:17 , by TKing09

Daniel Aranda Martinez, of San Angelo, passed away on December 18, 2022 at the age of 59. He was born on January 11, 1963 to Daniel G. and Elizabeth Aranda Martinez.

Daniel was the oldest of six, and always took the role of big brother seriously. His brothers recall him always being a caretaker for his family, especially as each of their parents passed. Daniel graduated from Lakeview High School in 1981. He spent some time at ASU and then worked at SESCO until they closed their doors. In 1987, his only child, Casandra LeAnn, was born. Along with her he gained two bonus children whom he always loved dearly, Joe Edward & Tara LaShey.

Daniel was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. Daniel’s family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he often showed with his love and support. He loved his girlfriend Belinda dearly and she was always by his side. He was unendingly proud of Cassie, and everybody knew that she was his life’s joy.

Daniel was also a passionate football coach and could often be found coaching for the YMCA when he wasn’t at home. What many people don’t know is his 1st coaching gig was coaching Joey in Baseball in the spring 1989. That same fall, he coached Joey in football and took on his 1st ever football coaching position as a defense coach for the YMCA Cowboys. Those boys went on to be “City Champions” that year. He fell in love with coaching and working with the kids. He coached for over 30 years, teaching hundreds of kids the love of the game, and often recruited other family members to help him coach. He took pride in coaching his nephews and grandsons and sharing his passion with them. His teams carried a few different names along the years starting with the Cowboys, then Rams, and Cavalry but most notably The Chiefs. That North Side Pride stood out and he loved to represent Lake View. When asked if he was ever going to retire the answer was always “one day”. He was still coaching in 2022. In the years between coaching for the Y, he was asked to help coach a local semi-pro team here in San Angelo, The Stampede. After a few years The Stampede combined with the other local team in town, the Six Shooters to form The Cavalry. In 2011 they went 11-0 and won the TFL Championshp That year. He Also went on to be the GM for TFL for a few years after. Those were some of the best times in his life. He made many lifelong friendships with that organization that he talked about often. It was for sure a highlight in his life. Aside from coaching football, he was a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan, and nobody better say a bad word about “Dem Boys”! He rooted for all Texasteams but was a vivid Texas Longhorns, Texas Rangers and Houston Rockets fan. But more than coaching and watching his teams he enjoyed supporting his grandchildren including Joey and Tara’s children and his nieces and nephews in their ventures. He went to as many events as possible near or far, and if he wasn't able to make it physically, you knew he was watching that live stream.

Aside from sports Daniel loved to dance, it was another thing he was so passionate about. Back in his day nobody could touch him on that dance floor, it was often you would come over and find some Tejano music blasting and there would be a dance session going on. It was an art. He also loved taking pictures and capturing all things in life important to him behind a lens, it wasn't often you would see him without a camera in tow, he passed that passion and love on to Cassie.

Anyone who knew Daniel knew that he was the most loving father, brother, uncle (tio), and friend that anybody could ask for. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel & Elizabeth Martinez, his brother, Robert Martinez, and a great nephew, Daymian Saldana. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, William and Casandra Robinson, grandkids Zakih and Cameron, long time girlfriend Belinda, his bonus son and his wife Joey and Laura Humphreys and their children Anjelina, Joey, and Jocelynn, bonus daughter and her husband Corey and Tara Harmon and their children Korban and Eleanor, his brothers Juventino Martinez (Moni), Adam Martinez and Roland Martinez, his sister Janet Cuellar, and his nieces and nephews, Johnathon Martinez, Amber Cuellar, Elizabeth Cuellar, Bridget Martinez, Kristina Martinez, Daniel Martinez, Pablo Sosa, Antonio Martinez, Candice Martinez, Elaura Schultz, Erika Sosa, Megan Martinez, Anjellika Martinez, Jacob Martinez and Gabriel Cuellar, and many great nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Also his Monday Golden Corral buddies who stole his heart and had him wrapped around their little fingers (great nieces) Aubreigh and Promiss.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for help with funeral costs. Donations can be given through GoFundMe or Harper Funeral Home. Visitation is scheduled at Harper Funeral Home on Friday, December 30th from 5pm - 7pm. The memorial service will be at San Angelo First Assembly of God on Saturday, December 31st at 2pm.
