John Alvin McDaniel slipped into the arms of his Savior on Sunday, October 29, 2023 with his family by his side. A memorial service will be held at a later date, as he donated his body to Texas Tech’s medical research.
John was born March 19, 1935 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Dr. John D. and Lavina Jenner McDaniel. The family lived in Marengo, Iowa until going to Bangkok, Siam where he spent some of his young years while the family was serving as medical missionaries. The family moved to Robert Lee in 1949 when his father took over the new hospital there.
John graduated from Robert Lee High School in 1955. Upon graduation he married Peggy Jackson and started to work for West Texas Utilities, which later became AEP. He served in various managerial positions, serving in Junction, Santa Anna, Cisco, Abilene, Marfa and San Angelo. He retired in 1994 in San Angelo, completing 39 years of service.
He was so proud of and is survived by his four beautiful daughters. They are Betsy (Steve) Austin of Abilene, Dinah Jones of Abilene, Marcia McKinnon, and Rebecca (Nick) Dusckas of San Angelo. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Zach (Julie) Austin of Longview, Adam (Kelly) McKinnon of Houston, Carrie Austin, Rebecca Kennedy, Jamie Jones, all of Abilene, Chris (Sarah) McKinnon of Austin, Megan Thompson, Nicholas (Julie) Dusckas of San Angelo; and 16 great-grandchildren; his siblings Carolyn Simpson of San Angelo and LaVina McDaniel of Cleburne. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles McDaniel of California and brother, Fred McDaniel of San Angelo and son-in-law, Tim Jones, brother-in-law, Marvin Simpson and great-grandson, Tripp Austin.
In 2008 John married Annelle Simpson Vick, whom he had dated in high school. They had 14-1/2 blessed years. He is also survived by her three children and their families., Dennis and Kim Vick, Sheila and Donnie Hooker and Cheri and Richard McKnight, six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
John loved the Lord and tried to live his life to His wishes. Earlier he was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He and Annelle are members of the First Christian Church in San Angelo. ~IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL.”
