08/17/2015 - 15:51 , by johnb

Rev. Walter Wayne Maxwell, 74, of San Angelo went to be with Christ on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 after a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the Church of Pentecost with Rev. Glenn Howard officiating.

Graveside service will follow at 4:00pm in Eastland at the Eastland City Cemetery with Rev. John Howard and Rev. Brad Howard officiating under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Wayne was born to Aubrey Earnest and Mirl Josephine Maxwell on October 10, 1940 in Gorman, Texas. He attended Wickett and Monahans schools and graduated from Monahans High. After graduation, Wayne moved to California to attend Stockton Bible College. Later, he transferred to the Houston area where he completed his education and earned his degree from Texas Bible College.

Moving back to Monahans, Wayne became reacquainted with one of the lovely young woman in the church singles group. Nellie Mae Barnes became his helpmeet and soulmate when they wed in May of 1966. Soon after marriage, Wayne accepted pastorate of the United Pentecostal Church in Albany, Texas. While living in Albany, their oldest son Michael Wayne was born. Wayne began to feel a call to go to San Angelo and establish a church there. During the first years in San Angelo their second son Timothy Layne was born. The Maxwell’s also opened their hearts and home to include Cindy Jones as a foster daughter.

For over forty years Wayne labored and loved people to the Lord in San Angelo as pastor of Fair Park United Pentecostal Church later to become Church of Pentecost. Wayne also established works in Sterling City and Grape Creek. Ministers stand behind pulpits and work in churches all over the world due to the tutelage of Wayne over the past fifty years.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey and Mirl Maxwell.

He is survived by his wife Nell and his son Michael Wayne and wife Tera of the Austin area and their children Brooke Hernandez and husband Luis, Lauren Brenae and Michael Austin, his son Timothy Layne of Lake Whitney and his children Tyler, Tanner and Trenton and their mother Jennifer Maxwell of Royce City, his foster daughter Cindy Jones Stokes and husband Andy of Byron, Georgia. Other survivors are a host of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

“Each for the Other and Both for the Lord” is a song that was sung at Wayne and Nell’s wedding that beautifully describes their life together. For forty nine years they have lived for and loved each other as they both loved the Lord. Wayne Maxwell was truly a man of God. As the sun was setting on August 12, 2015, he walked into the arms of his waiting and welcoming God. His life was an inspiration to everyone who knew him and he will be greatly missed.
