Joyce Helen Cowan Chadwick

10/07/2025 - 09:01 , by TKing09

Joyce Helen Cowan Chadwick, 86, of Waco, Texas, peacefully entered the presence of her Lord on October 4, 2025. She was born on June 9, 1939, in Loco, Oklahoma, to Alta Mae (Davis) Cowan and Robert Cowan.

After marrying the love of her life, William Dale Chadwick, Joyce devoted her life to faith, family, and service. She surrendered her heart to Jesus after Dale became a Christian and began taking their young boys to church—a turning point that shaped generations to come. Joyce lived her faith in the everyday moments. She read Scripture aloud as her sons ate breakfast, made sure Sunday was honored with reverence, and created a home where laughter, warmth, and grace always filled the air.

Her Thanksgiving table was open to anyone without family close by, and her granddaughters treasure memories of their annual tea parties and shopping trips. If there was an opportunity to enjoy Mexican food together, Joyce was ready. She loved people, parties, and social gatherings—where there was laughter and life in the room, she wanted to be part of it! Family affectionately called her the “fun grandma.”

Joyce and Dale moved to San Angelo in 1971 and lived there over fifty years. In 1976, they purchased Myers Drug in downtown San Angelo, where Dale served as pharmacist and Joyce managed the gift department—stocking the store with beautiful Vera Bradley bags and thoughtful treasures. Over more than forty years, she helped Dale develop the store into a thriving downtown business. A successful, self-taught businesswoman with a tireless work ethic, Joyce was a true helpmate, faithful both in business and at home.

Together, Joyce and Dale also led the college ministry at College Hills Baptist Church, where countless students came to know Christ through their loving hospitality, creative lessons, and genuine care. Their ministry touched hundreds of young married couples, college students, and single adults. Only God knows how many will be in heaven through their faithful service.

Joyce later found joy in quilting, stitching warmth and love into every piece she made for family and friends. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always eager to know when she would see them next. Her love for them was active and constant, and they adored her in return.

In her later years, Joyce dedicated herself to caring for her beloved husband as his health declined. She modeled sacrificial love and grace in those final years, centering her life on helping him with steadfast devotion.

Joyce is survived by her husband, William Dale Chadwick, and their sons, Mike (Kathy) and Doug (Melissa) Chadwick; seven grandchildren—Carissa, Ryan, Tyler (Kylie), Kaylee, Bailey (Clayton) Kafer, Abbey (Jace) Johnson, and Kirby (Nick) Graeve; and nine great-grandchildren—Layne, Maren, and Eden Chadwick; Kilian Chadwick; Bennett, Emeline, and Sullivan Kafer; Forrest Graeve; and Avery Johnson. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Alley.

The Funeral Service will be 12:00 P.M., Friday, October 10, 2025, at Harper Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to honor Joyce by making a donation to the building fund of the church where Mike is pastor: Christ’s Way Baptist Church – Building Fund. 632 CR 6330 Dayton, TX 77575.

Family and friends may share their condolences at www.harper-funeralhome.com.

Carroll Swafford

10/06/2025 - 08:59 , by TKing09

Ernest Carroll “Carroll” Swafford, Jr., 74 years old, passed away with his wife by his side, on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer. Carroll was born on December 15, 1950, in Uvalde, Texas to Ernest Carroll Swafford, Sr. and Alta Marie (Sparks) Swafford. He married Dallas Anne O’Bryant on May 25, 1989, and they remained married for 36 years before his passing. He is survived by his wife, Dallas, a son Bryan Keith Swafford, and a brother, Tommy Swafford (wife Linda). Carroll was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Carroll retired from being self-employed as a general contractor of both residential and commercial construction. He contracted for General Telephone (and then Verizon) for quite some time. Carroll would say that Dallas was spoiled (and he wasn’t wrong) because he built each house they lived in. After his retirement, Carroll stayed busy with various projects such as building metal furniture and participating in shoots around the United States. His true passion was shooting, and that passion only grew stronger with every shoot he attended. Carroll missed his “shooting family” tremendously when he was no longer able to participate.

Special thanks to the following for their love, care, and support over the last couple of years: Dr. Peter Chang, Dr. Manuel Dominguez, and the Interim Health Care team. Additionally, to our close friends and family (you know who you are), for visiting, running errands, prayers and support during this fight. Carroll and Dallas appreciate it more than words can express.

Arrangements are made by Harper Funeral Home where visitation will take place on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 11 am to 1 pm.

God rest his soul.

Lewis Lee Porter

10/06/2025 - 08:57 , by TKing09

Lewis Lee Porter, 87, a resident of San Angelo, Texas, and beloved family member, received his Heavenly reward on Monday, September 29th. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his kindness, sense of humor, and willingness to play any game set up at the table.

Family at the Center

Born September 18, 1938, in Kingsville, Texas, he was the son of two dedicated educators, Harry Brown Porter and Eva Grace Ewing Porter. He is now reunited with them as well as his brothers, Harry Porter, Jr. and Robert Porter, sisters Marcella Porter, Linda Lynd, and Harriet Stevens, and brothers-in-law Bill Stevens and Chester Lynd.

He is survived by a family who cherished him and have many funny stories to tell: brother, David Porter, two sisters-in-law, Lillian Porter and Dena Porter, several cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews on whom he made a lasting and loving impression. He never sought to be the center of attention, but his home was central to family gatherings large and small for many years. If those walls could talk, oh the memories they would share!

An Education in Hard Work

Lewis attended schools in Barnhart and Robert Lee, Texas, and then went on to San Angelo College and Abilene Christian College.

His early lessons in hard work, though, came from his parents and working with his grandfather, Robert Ewing, during the summers to build Churches of Christ throughout Central Texas. He had many stories to tell about working alongside his grandfather, and it was clear that was a favorite and formative time in his life.

After his high school graduation and prior to college, he worked at the Texas Highway Department at Barnhart. He attended a few years of college and was then drafted into the Army in 1963. As a conscientious objector, Lewis served as electrocardiograph tech at Fort Bliss, El Paso, until his honorable discharge in 1965. Though his values would not allow him to step onto the battlefield, he was still very proud to serve his country.

Following his service, he moved to Abilene and worked at Easter Machine Shop as a quality control inspector, and enjoyed living near his sister Linda and her family. He moved to his adopted hometown of San Angelo in 1972, working for Pool Company, a leading oil field equipment manufacturing and service company, in the drafting department. His brother Robert also worked at Pool Company and the move to San Angelo allowed him to be near his parents and Robert’s family. His final career move was working again with his brother Robert as a machinist at Aeromoter Windmill Company, until his retirement.

A Loving and Dedicated Son

Lewis deeply admired his parents and was thankful for every opportunity they gave him. And when his father passed away in 1988, he moved in with his mother and cared for her on behalf of the family until her death in 1990.

As a child of God, Lewis put great emphasis on his faith. A longtime member of Southgate Church of Christ, he was a diligent attendee and served by passing out communion and counting contributions. He attended up until the time his health would not allow it.

Always the Supportive Brother and Cool Uncle

For Lewis, family was at the heart of everything. From moving to be near family to moving in to care for his mother after his father passed, he took his family responsibilities very seriously. He also helped with numerous home improvement projects and remodels over the years at family houses, and homes were more beautiful and meaningful because of him.

To his nieces and nephews, “Uncle Lewis” was a perpetual storyteller, an instigator of games, and always happy to give you a ride in his beloved Camaro. He learned to play 42 and dominoes at an early age from his Grandpa Ewing, but grew to love games of all kinds, and passed on that love and knowledge to the next generations. Each and every one of them have wonderful memories of sitting around his game table—though it’s still unclear if all of his “rules” were accurate!

Those who happily and fondly called him “Uncle Lewis” include: Tim and Marlene Stevens and families, Michael and Debora Stevens and families, Kelley and Dustin Glidewell and family, Jamie and Johnny Porras and families, Ty and Randi Porter and family, Coby Lynd and families, Lori Lynd Forbes and family, Veronica Lynd and family, and Curtis Lynd and family, Robert Cody Porter, and Kristi DeAnn Porter.

Upcoming Service and Lasting Legacy

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 4th at 1:00 pm at Cleburne Memorial Park Cemetery in Cleburne, Texas. The family also invites anyone to share their memories and stories on the funeral home website: www.harper-funeralhome.com.

And to continue the Porter legacy of investing in education, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to San Angelo Christian Academy. This school is on the campus of his church and it’s also where his brother David retired from and his sister-in-law Dena still works.

Donations can be made online or by check, and will provide a Christ-centered education that fosters excellence and God-given talents. www.sanangelochristianacademy.org

Thank you for being a part of Lewis’ life and helping us keep his memory alive!

Virginia Lee Jorgenson

10/06/2025 - 08:55 , by TKing09

“Jean” Jorgensen passed into heaven’s realm on September 22, 2025. Born Virginia Lee Davis on September 14, 1930, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to parents Esther Winsor Davis and Elmer Davis. Jean grew up on the Winsor Guest Ranch at Cowles, NM, which dates to a homestead established by her grandfather Henry Winsor in the 1890s. There at the edge of the Pecos Wilderness in the Santa Fe National Forest, Jean thrived by way of lively outdoor adventure and the doting attention of several close relatives living in the area.

Jean adored the mountains, as did her parents, who took her on her first overnight pack trip at the age of nine months, nestled securely inside a saddle bag. Her upbringing in the northern New Mexico mountains found her riding her horse to the local schoolhouse at the age of six and guiding week-long pack trips for guests of the ranch by the age of twelve. She could be found sliding down pine needle covered hills on sleds in the summertime with her two younger brothers, “Joe” and “Bobby”, and sitting around the campfire with guests of the ranch singing and listening to ghost stories. Jean spent most of her early school years living with relatives or boarding in schools in Albuquerque, Las Vegas and Santa Fe NM, coming home to the mountains for holidays and summers. In 1943, she and her brothers boarded a train to Glendale, CA to join their mother, a riveter for Lockheed during World War II. While in California, Jean fell in love with the ocean and fashion, and graduated from Burbank high school in 1946, a year earlier than her peers at the age of 16. When the war was over, she and her family returned home to New Mexico, where she attended secretarial school in Santa Fe and worked at Mountain Bell as an operator. In 1948, she met Philip Jorgensen, and they married in 1949. Jean had three children, Robert Neale Jorgensen, Esther Elizabeth “Libby” Jorgensen Mims (Joe) and Jennifer Lee Jorgensen, residing with Phil in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. She was a fiercely devoted mother and in early 1970, she moved to Albuquerque with her children, where she purchased a house and began working a full-time job, determined to make a beautiful home for her family in an era where being a single mother and soul breadwinner was rare. Jean took evening classes to earn her certificate to become a full-charge bookkeeper and worked for many years at Universal Construction until her retirement in 2001. She enjoyed travel with her children, mother and friends all over the United States, Europe and Canada. In 1986, Jean built a townhome where she resided until 2020 and spent time hosting holidays, birthdays and special celebrations, especially with her five grand-children Joshua Pilon (Tiffany), Connor Jorgensen (Celia), “Trey” Mims (Andrea), Jenna Stephens (Ryan), and Logan Mims. Later, she enjoyed special moments with her six great-grand-children Jacob and Nathan Pilon, Adelaide and Alister Stephens, and Ansel and “Winnie” Mims. Jean’s favorite activities were traveling, gardening in her lovingly landscaped yard, and devotedly serving her church community at St John’s United Methodist Church. In 2020, Jean moved to San Angelo, Texas to be closer to her daughter, Libby, and transitioned to Baptist Retirement Community. During that time, she was able to visit her beloved New Mexico mountains each summer at the Mims/Jorgensen family cabins on Grass Mountain, not far from where she grew up. Jean had a long and blessed life, overcoming many challenges through her faith, courage and tenacity and building a life full of joy and laughter with the people she loved best in all the world, her family and friends.

Jean Jorgensen was preceded in death by her cherished grandmother Flora Ball Winsor, brother Robert Davis, beloved aunt Ruth Winsor Morse, Philip Jorgensen, brother Joseph Davis, and Mother Esther Winsor Von Wolff. A memorial service will be held in the spring at St. John’s UMC in Albuquerque NM.
