Dorothy Burrell

06/10/2025 - 09:41 , by TKing09

Dorothy Irene Ray Burrell, 95, went to be with the Lord on June 4, 2025. Dorothy was born on November 17, 1929, in San Angelo, Texas, to Truett and Lois Ray. She married Herb Burrell on April 11, 1948, in San Angelo, Texas. They celebrated 61 wonderful years together loving and supporting each other.

Her presence brought warmth, strength, and unwavering faith to all who knew her. A true woman of grace, her life was a testament to service, love, and devotion. She wore many titles—each one with humility and care—but her most treasured role was that of a nurturer. Children were always at the center of her heart. Whether she was guiding her own children, loving on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, or pouring into the lives of young people in her community and church, her heart was a wellspring of compassion and wisdom. Her hands were never idle; they were constantly tending—to gardens, to hearts, to homes. She had the ultimate green thumb, growing beauty wherever she went, both in soil and in souls. What she planted, God grew. Her faith in the Lord was unshakable. She lived her life as a reflection of His love. Whether teaching, comforting, encouraging, or simply being present, she was a vessel of His grace and mercy. Her church was more than a place of worship; it was where she labored joyfully, pouring herself into ministries and the lives others, especially children and their families. Her love continues to bloom in the hearts of her family and all who had the blessing of crossing her path. Well done, good and faithful servant. You have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith.

Dorothy was a wonderful, caring and loving, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her son Kenneth Burrell and wife, Libby and their children, Lauren, Jordan and wife, Alison and Jeremy and wife, Erin; daughter Jan Dorris and husband, Duwain and their children, Marc and wife, Vicki and Katie; daughter Rhonda Kimble and husband, Jack and their children, Lacey Kimble Carter and husband, Michael and Christa Jordan, and husband, Jonathan; son Bryan Burrell and wife Christine; great-grandchildren Keegan and Landen Dorris, Mason, Maddox, and Sophie Carter, Kai and Micah Jude Jordan, Eva, Lila, Henry, Brent, Beau, Ellie, Jonah, Grace, Luke, Elijah and Nora Burrell. She is also survived by nieces and nephews and a host of many neighbors and friends, both local and across the miles.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Herb Burrell, and parents Truett & Lois Ray, sisters, Hazel McWilliams and husband Harlan and Betty Huckaby, and great-grandson Brayden Dorris.

Bonnie Jean Smith

06/09/2025 - 07:30 , by TKing09

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bonnie Jean Hayes Smith on June 5, 2025. Bonnie Jean was born on October 27, 1936, to B.F. Hayes and Gracie Bracken Hayes in San Saba, Texas.

When Bonnie was young, her family moved from San Saba to San Angelo, Texas, where she was raised with her two brothers, Kyle and Kenneth. It was in San Angelo she met her beloved husband, Andrew P. Smith. Bonnie and Andy were married January 15, 1958 and the pair have been notably inseparable ever since. The newlyweds took a brief honeymoon to San Antonio then moved to the Harris Family ranch outside of Big Lake, Texas. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Bonnie got straight to work fixing up the old ranch house known as the “Two Story.” Though it was no small feat, she conquered it with ease and turned it into their first family home. The following year, on June 7, 1959, Bonnie gave birth to their son, Andrew Paul Smith, Jr. The young family lived in Big Lake until 1963 before moving to the ranch in Water Valley. After spending a few years in Water Valley, Bonnie and Andy bought a house in town. Following their move to town, Clayton Hayes Smith was born on November 28, 1967 to complete their family.

Always known to be a meticulous housekeeper, Bonnie found the house in town a little easier to keep. Bonnie’s house was still frequented by plenty of cowboys stopping by to have a glass of her famous sweet tea, along with the occasional dogie lamb or border collie running through the house. Despite the dirty boots and dogs there was never a hair to be found or one thing out of place.

Bonnie’s adventurous spirit fueled her many passions in life. Bonnie enjoyed being Andy’s co-pilot, whether it be flying between ranches or flying to the casino in Ruidoso. It’s been noted that she was partial to the thrill of chasing deer just feet above the treeline. However, she would put up with flying at the safe altitude needed to get to the mountains as long as she could play a slot machine when they got there. Among their many adventures, fishing trips with friends and family were plenty. Bonnie was known for her passion for fishing and just as known for her dislike of seafood. She is quoted as saying the closest she would get to a shrimp is putting it on a hook to catch a catfish. And while she hated seafood, she never passed up a dessert! Her sweet tooth was legendary.

Bonnie and Andy were members of the First Christian Church. She was proud to have the entire Smith family join them for the Christmas Eve service every year. One could find Bonnie nestled in the middle of an entire pew full of Smith children and grandchildren. It was there that she and Andy became part of the Sunday school group that eventually became known as the “Wednesday Night Group” full of their beloved, closest friends.

Bonnie was also a devoted member of the Phila Club. She loved socializing with her friends and raising funds for many wonderful causes around San Angelo.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Gracie and B.F. Hayes, and her older brothers, Kenneth Hayes and Kyle Hayes and their wives.

Bonnie is survived by sons Andy Smith, Jr. (and wife, Shana), Clayton Smith (and wife, Tamie), her grandchildren Justin Smith, Madelyn Smith, Will Smith (and wife, Ashley), and Ross Smith. Bonnie was a great-grandmother to Will and Ashley’s young sons Sutton and Shaw Smith. She also had many nieces and nephews she loved dearly.

The family extends their deepest gratitude and heart felt appreciation to all of the exceptional care staff.

Bonnie Jean Hayes Smith will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

A service in remembrance of Bonnie will be held at Fairmont Cemetery on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Following the burial, lunch will take place at Grace Christian Church formerly known as the First Christian Church in downtown San Angelo, Texas. Memorials can be made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center in San Angelo.

Martin Arthur Johnson

06/09/2025 - 07:27 , by TKing09

Monday morning, June 2, 2025, Martin Arthur Johnson departed this world for his forever home. Martin was born to Kennard and Louise Johnson in Sioux City, Iowa on July 15, 1946. With his dad being in the military, they moved around the country wherever they were needed. In 1959, the family settled in Roswell, New Mexico. Before Martin graduated high school in 1965, he met the love of his life, Susan Willingham. After high school, Martin moved to Plainview, Texas for school to become a court reporter. He graduated from the Business College of the Southwest as the fastest stenographer in his class typing on average 200 to 250 words per minute. While in school, Martin married the love of his life, Susan Willingham and moved her to San Antonio as soon as he graduated. His first job was as a freelance stenographer for the City of San Antonio. They then moved to Beeville, Texas where Martin worked for Judge Joe Wade in Bee County, Aransas County and San Patricio County. Martin and Susan had two boys while in Beeville. Then in 1978, an opportunity to work for Judge Steib, opened in San Angelo, Texas. Martin stayed with Tom Green County until Judge Steib retired. He and Susan then started Angelo Reporting, a private stenographer business. After selling Angelo Reporting, Martin continued working for Tom Green County serving with Judge Sutton and then Judge Woodward until his retirement in 2010.

After retiring from the county, Martin and Susan began to travel. Cruising was a favorite pastime as was traveling all over the United States to watch their grandchildren play and coach, volleyball, basketball, tennis, softball, football and run cross country. Martin could be found sitting front row at all his grandkids’ sporting events and cheering them and their teammates on. Martin also enjoyed time spent at the coast. We are not sure if it was his love of fishing or eating fresh shrimp that drew him to the coast, but his love of the area was passed down to his kids and grandkids.

Martin loved teaching his grandkids, especially about animals. It didn’t matter if was horses, cows, goats, dogs, rabbits, fish or birds. He loved them all. Any animal lucky to find itself at the Johnson house was a blessed animal indeed. Martin also had a passion for early 70’s style pickups (which he had dreams of restoring one day) and Harley Davidson motorcycles. This fascination started in his teen years while spending time working in his Dad’s Harley Davidson shop in Roswell, New Mexico. Martin always had the coolest car or bike around and could fix just about anything on his hotrods and motorcycles.

Martin is preceded in death by his parents, Kennard and Louise Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Susan, their two boys, Rick (Stacy) Johnson and Kenneth (Chris) Johnson, his grandchildren, Jami Dale, Kodie Johnson, Corie Swagger, Blake Johnson, Rylie Clements and Kyle Johnson and great grandchildren James Stanley, Abbi Dale, Bennett Dale and Ophelia Johnson. He is also survived by his sister Margaret (Dale) Turner.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cornerstone Christian School of San Angelo, Athletic Department, 1502 N. Jefferson St, San Angelo, TX 76901. A family graveside service will be held in Roswell, New Mexico at a later date.
