Norman Russell Loose, Jr.

02/07/2023 - 09:04 , by TKing09

Norman Russell Loose, Jr. A life of love, laughter and service.

Norman Russell Loose, Jr. was born to parents Norman R. Loose and Evelyn Loose on July 17,1938 in El Paso, Texas. Russell and his family relocated to Carlsbad, New Mexico where he attended high school and met the love of his life and future wife, Sonya Ann Pate. The couple married on November 27, 1958.

Russell took great pride during his undergraduate at Texas Tech University as a member of the ROTC. After graduating with a degree in Industrial Engineering, he served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. During his work career he attained an MBA from TCU, and later a banking degree from SMU. Russell and Sonya welcomed four children into their family: Cindy, Robin, Greg and Amy. His love for his alma mater continued as he served as a member of the Industrial Engineering Advisory Board for Texas Tech in the 1980’s. Russell dedicated his career to banking and finance and made many lifelong friends in the process.

Russell’s greatest joy in life came from being a father, and later a Papa. He was dedicated to his children, even if that meant riding horses many miles home when they refused to load into the trailer, or showing kindness when his kids wrecked his cars. He was an expert coyote caller, ghost storyteller, and ice cream leveler.

Russell and Sonya accomplished their dream of retiring in the mountains of Cloudcroft, NM. Russell could be found helping neighbors clear snow from their driveways or enjoying four-wheeling through the mountains. He was a professional Papa to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He emulated kindness and patience as he coached kiddos through strumming his ukulele, making paper airplanes, and reading the newspaper. He always encouraged a little mischief and engineered many family pranks and schemes.

Russell loved to work with his hands whether it was on his home in Cloudcroft, or making train sets for his children. Between his craftmanship and Sonya’s painting skills, his family has enjoyed many handmade treasures in their homes. He loved to share these skills and teach them to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Even just washing the car was a chore made extra fun since it was done with Papa.

Russell also served as a deacon in their home church of First United Methodist Church in Cloudcroft. Whether the need was organizing a fundraiser, or replacing a roof for a person in need, Russell was always first to lend a hand. Russell left this world for his heavenly home on January 29, 2023. He is survived by his soul mate, Sonya, and their four children and their families: Cindy Bolen, Robin & Peter Nies, Greg and Julie Loose, Amy and Clay Smith; his grandchildren Jessica (Bolen) Cummings, Hayden Smith, Ryan Nies, Pate Bolen, Jake Loose, Brady Smith, Hogan Loose, Alison (Nies) Burkhalter and Lillie Loose; his great-grandchildren Kayden, June, Samuel, Layten and Charlee. Russell is also survived by his sisters Linda Brannon and Susie Ratcliff.

Russell is proceeded in death by his parents Norman R. Loose and Evelyn Loose and his brother Val Loose.

Russell was “A Nice Guy”!!

In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Cloudcroft United Methodist Church.

Barbara Ann Hancock Burney

02/06/2023 - 09:04 , by TKing09

Barbara Ann Hancock Burney, treasured Christian sister and friend went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, February 1, 2023.

Barbara was born July 29, 1943 at St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, Texas. She was the only child of Clifton Nathan and Maxie Benjamin Hancock.

She was an exemplary example of a woman of noble character and grace. She was an elegant lady in words, actions, and dress; a force to be reckoned with in areas she championed. Barbara demonstrated that any challenged could be conquered with persistence and commitment. She was always up for an adventure. Her knowledge of places, people and things was uncanny. She was the epitome of living life to the fullest and trusting God in all things. Barbara had a remarkable close walk with Jesus. She always thanked God for leading her through many many trials and tribulations of life; constantly reminding everyone He was faithful. She never gave up praising him.

Barbara fought a courageous silent battle with cancer. She was a very private person never asking for help, unless absolutely necessary.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior on April 13, 1952 at the age of nine and was baptized at Trinity Baptist Church, Houston, Texas.

Barbara was a faithful active church member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Beaumont, Texas, First United Methodist Church, San Angelo, Texas, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, San Angelo, Texas and was presently a member of Good Shepard Episcopal Church of San Angelo, Texas.

She was a dedicated student of the Bible and obedient to God’s Word. Her witness of God’s love and care was shared with all she came in contact with. Not a day went by she was not praying for the needs of others. Barbara checked on her neighbors regularly especially Coletta Lively, Pat Wilson, Nelda Watkins and Clifton and Bonnie Reed.

She had a heart for mentioning, encouraging and sharing her love with young people to further their education and experience all God had for them. She was gifted at planning ways to set up scholarships for young people to further their education in their particular area of talent.

She was passionate about continually beautifying areas of landscape around Baptist Retirement Center. She would put on her gloves and with her spade, rake, & miscellaneous tools, plants and seeds she would create beautiful areas to be enjoyed by all. She had a magic touch in her horticulture adventures.

Barbara was a dedicated employee of Shannon Hospital for nineteen years, in the Pathology Department. Barbara was responsible for all medical reports that were typed.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00 PM, at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 702 S. Abe Street, San Angelo, Texas.

Appreciation and thanks to Ericka Temples for being a special friend in which Barbara entrusted to carried out her final earthly affairs and Charles Rodriquez who checked on her wellness daily, for years as well as David McBride and Jim Bean. They were truly her close family. Appreciation and thanks to Baptist Retirement Community CEO, Arron Hargett, East Village administration office personnel, Debra, Corine, Carla and Dawn, Transportation personnel Sally, and Main Street Café Manager Stephanie Simmons, and her personnel staff for being loving, kind, caring, and encouraging to our good friend Barbara! John Ross Campbell

02/06/2023 - 09:01 , by TKing09

Authentic, outspoken, honest, adventurous, and one-of-a-kind John Ross Campbell headed west on the evening of January 28th, 2023, from his residence in San Angelo, Texas to meet his Lord and Savior and his beloved wife Ann welcoming him home to eternity. John was born in Roswell, New Mexico on the 29th of October 1929, a memorably bad day for many, but a blessed day for all who would have the good fortune to know him. His parents were Elmer Finus and Marian Morgan Campbell who soon moved with John and big brother Randy to Fort Davis, Texas. There, Elmer helped bulldoze the road up to MacDonald Observatory, Marian taught school, and John’s early childhood days produced indelible memories of roaming the Davis Mountains and making lifelong friendships. In the mid-1930s the family moved to Bosque County in central Texas to ranch. At age 15 John learned to fly from a WWII flight instructor and soon began flying his own war surplus Stearman biplane around the countryside. He graduated from Meridian High School in 1946 and, after a few semesters of college, joined the Naval Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet in 1948. He trained as a carrier pilot in Pensacola and Corpus Christi before being stationed in Norfolk, Virginia with Atlantic Fleet Anti-Submarine Squadron Twenty-Six.

December 27th, 1950, John married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Ann Lomax, in Meridian and returned with her to Norfolk. In 1952 they came back to Texas and moved to College Station with newborn Suzy where John completed his education at Texas A&M in the Class of ‘54. He was a proud Aggie forever after! Son John and daughter Janie were born to the family in the coming years spent in Dallas.

John always said he “never worked a day in his life” because he did what he loved for a living. He flew with the Naval Ready Reserve from 1952 through 1966 out of Navy Dallas and was a pilot with Continental Airlines for almost 35 years. He was appreciated for his integrity, generosity, and good counsel and was elected to positions of leadership by his fellow pilots, serving on safety and accident investigation committees and as treasurer of the Airline Pilots Association. His career in aviation afforded him the opportunity to travel the world and fly many types of aircraft from the Aeronca Champion he first flew to the TBMs off Jeep Aircraft Carriers, the Navy F9F to the DC-10 and Boeing 747 to name a few. The final ten years of his career were spent flying internationally over the Atlantic to Europe and throughout the Pacific. He said the highlight was his time spent with Air Micronesia. All told he logged over 33,000 flight hours. He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen.

Throughout his career John continued ranching and owned, flew, brokered, rebuilt, modified, and sold a succession of light aircraft and amphibians. His private flying experiences on unimproved landing strips and lakes were extensive in Alaska, Canada, and Mexico primarily in pursuit of good fishing and hunting with friends and family. On a most memorable trip he and Ann flew along the Alcan highway and Alaska Range. Dad always called Mom “his most fearless co-pilot”.

The couple eventually moved to the ranch in Bosque County after retirement where they enjoyed many years of country living and frequent, fun-filled family times and holiday celebrations. No Papaw ever enjoyed his grand and great grandchildren more and he was beloved by them.

Dad was a lover of people and never met a stranger, striking up conversations with whoever was nearby. His storytelling, humor, and wit were renowned, and tears of laughter accompanied many a gathering around the dining table. The Campbells’ hospitality and good cooking, love of music and good times were a constant as they welcomed many to their home. He was blessed by the friendships of good people and was a faithful member of the Morgan and Meridian United Methodist Churches. He was also a Rotarian. In 2015, due to health concerns, they made San Angelo their home.

John was preceded in death by his parents E.F. and Marian Campbell, brother Randy, son-in-law Jeff Trentacosta, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Paul and Jane Bolton, and brother-in-law Jim Lomax. His wife, Ann passed away in 2018 following almost 68 years of marriage. The love they shared has been a solid foundation and inspiration for their children and extended family.

John is survived by his daughter Suzy and husband Pat Makins of San Angelo, son John Campbell and wife Judy of Morgan, daughter Janie Trentacosta of Fredericksburg, grandchildren Daniel (Claire) Makins, Sarah Makins McAlister, Jessie Trentacosta, Kaitlyn (Andy) Hawrylak, Matthew (Kelsey) Campbell, and Melissa (Sam) Naquin, and great grandchildren Cal and James Makins, Hallie and Ty McAlister, Robert and Eleanor Hawrylak, Noah, Sienna, and Silas Naquin, sister-in-law Carolyn Lomax, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and friends.

The family wishes to thank all his kind caregivers, especially Stephanie Melendez, and the staffs of Lyndale, Brayden Park, and Hospice of San Angelo.

A Celebration of John’s life will be held on March 4, 2023, at Meridian FUMC at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Morgan Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 305, Morgan TX 76671.

William "Bill" Wayne Rawls

02/01/2023 - 10:54 , by TKing09

William (Bill) Wayne Rawls was a man who loved Jesus and he loved people. He left his earthly home to be with Jesus on Sunday, January 29 at the ripe old age of 90. He lived a wonderful, joy filled life that centered on God first and then his loving family.

Bill was born in Christoval at the Rawls Bathhouse on November 8, 1932 to his proud parents Dr. Frank and Orah Rawls. He grew up playing on the South Concho River and harassing his two big sisters, Bobbie and Ginger, and his niece, Jackie Moore, and nephew Norman Jenkins. Although he adored his niece, Jeri, she was too young to experience his shenanigans. When he was in first grade, he saw a pretty little girl named Ann Kirby walking down the street. He told his mom that he was going to marry her someday….and he did!

He played six-man football at Christoval High School and the rest of the time he spent hunting, fishing and taking Ann on dates in his hotrod. In 1953, he and Ann got married and shortly after he joined the Navy Reserve. He traveled extensively in Cuba and South America. Returning home, he began working in the oilfield and welcomed their daughter, Cynthia, into the world.

While working for Sinclair, in Sweetwater, Texas, his sweet daughter, Nora, was born. Eventually, he and his family moved to Eldorado and finally to Fort Stockton, Texas, to work in the sulfur mining industry with Atlantic Richfield. Billie, his last baby girl, was born shortly after moving there. He became the superintendent of the mining operation and remained in that position until the mine closure. He then became a consultant for Addwest Mining and moved around the southwest, opening various types of mines. During his time in Fort Stockton, he was a proud member of the Fort Stockton United Methodist Church where he supported the MYF groups with multiple meals and served on various boards and committees,. He also served on the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce, he volunteered with 4-H, judged menudo contests and enjoyed life with his numerous friends and family members.

After Ann’s untimely death, he met a fellow church member, Anna Mayo. After several years of dating, she became his wife. She moved around the southwest with him, as they enjoyed life together. Upon his retirement, they settle back in his beloved Christoval with a lovely house built under the giant live oaks. His family worried about his retirement, due to his active lifestyle. But he built his barn and greenhouse and never slowed down. He joined the Christoval Volunteer Fire Department, took over care of the Christoval Cemetery, loved helping the monks at Mount Carmel, and took special pride in maintaining the Methodist Church. Everyone in town was blessed with his many woodworking projects that he gifted. He took great pride in his lifelong membership at the Christoval Masonic Lodge, where he was a Master Mason, He also received the Community Builder Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas.

His love of helping others did not go unnoticed, as he took many people under his wing and worked to improve their lives. Always of utmost importance to Bill, was serving his employees and community with a Christ centered love and heart of service. He has touched many lives and was a saint walking among us,

He is survived by his wife, Anna Rawls, his three loving daughters, Cindy Lemley, Nora Rawls and Billie and Larry Hill. He has nine grandchildren who love and adore him and thirteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by his step children Bobby Mayo, Eric Mayo, and Margaret Mayo. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jerry Kirby, sister-in-law, Shirley Kirby, and numerous nieces and nephews that he dearly loved.

The family would like to thank Barbara Madrid for all of the care and companionship that she gave to our father. We would also like to thank Dr. Jack and Carolyn Campbell for their assistance and love for our dad. Finally, we want to thank Hospice of San Angelo for their love, care, and compassion during this difficult time.

The visitation will be Friday, February 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Christoval Methodist Church. The funeral will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 4th, The family asks memorial donations to be made to the Christoval Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 193, Christoval, TX 76935.
