Johnny Lee Brunson

09/08/2021 - 08:37 , by TKing09

Johnny Lee Brunson, 88, died on September 4, 2021 at Sagecrest Tucker Unit at Baptist Memorial. On a day that commenced with sunshine and a beautiful blue sky, Johnny went peacefully after a 6 year journey through Alzheimer’s disease, concluding with a stroke. The months and days that preceded his passing were filled with song, as Johnny joyfully engaged the residents of Sagecrest with unending laughter and singing. His favorite songs, “You are my Sunshine” and the old hymns, must be filling the courts of heaven as he joins the Hallelujah Choir! The day prior to his jubilant journey, he enjoyed a final ice cream date with Patsy, his wife of 63 years. They enjoyed a drive through San Angelo, reminiscing, singing and telling stories (sometimes the same one a few times), with a favorite stop along the Concho River to watch the ducks and enjoy his favorite chocolate milkshake.

Johnny was born June 7, 1933, in O’Donnell, Texas to Allie B. and Neely Brunson and grew up in Norton, Bronte and Abilene, Texas. He was a life-long fan of football, baseball and golf. He was recruited in high school by his longtime friend and mentor, Michael Lehr, to play football at St. Joseph Academy in Abilene, Texas, where he excelled in sports, leadership and music. He was a captain on the football and basketball teams, class treasurer, choir, Glee Club President, and Senior Class Favorite. It was there that some of his greatest lessons found roots, as he referred throughout his lifetime to the example that was set by the Nuns, particularly Sister Amata and Sister Tarcisices.

He began working at an early age. A favorite job as a teenager was being a caddie at the Abilene Country Club golf course, where he became a skilled golfer. After graduation, he served in the Texas National Guard and in the U.S. Army for 3 years. He then worked for Dunigan Tool Company, while taking college courses at Ranger Junior College, earning an Associate Degree in Business. He completed his education at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, earning a B.B.A. He married Patsy Ashmore in 1958 in Abilene, Texas and moved to San Angelo, where they have resided and raised 3 children.

Johnny found his calling in the career field of education, where he was an elementary physical education teacher and coach for 31 years. With students, he was gifted in building relationships paving the way to develop their potential, not just in athleticism but with self-confidence and self-esteem. Coach B. always had a talent for finding just the right event for every student that desired to participate in the longstanding tradition of The San Angelo Little Olympics, and his success was manifest in winning the overall event for John H. Regan for 25 straight years, and then additional years at Fannin Elementary. The true “win”, however was the enduring love and devotion he had for his students, and they for him long after they left elementary school. He wore many caps as a veteran teacher, but the most notable was his quality to make learning fun. His greatest coaching assignment came after retirement, however, when his favorite title went from “Coach B” to “Daddo,” at which point he became a teacher of all things sport and song to his beloved grandchildren.

Johnny is pre-deceased by his parents, his sister Lavonda Armour, sister Margie Faye Kropp, brother Charles Brunson and sister Bobbie Jo Parvin. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Ashmore Brunson of San Angelo; his daughter Julie Beth Vann (David) of San Angelo; his son John David Brunson of San Angelo; and James (Jay) Brent Brunson (Kelly) of Tuttle, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Philip William Vann of Amarillo, Texas; Mary Kate Vann of Lubbock, Texas; Kaylee Nikole Pollock (Cody) of Yukon, Oklahoma; Zachary Chanse Brunson of Tuttle, Oklahoma; Kallie Anne Brunson of Stillwater, Oklahoma; and great grandson Stratson Chanse Brunson of Tuttle Oklahoma. He is also survived by a sister, Iwanda Boyd (Roger) of Big Spring, Texas. Additionally, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he adored and looked forward to seeing each year at his favorite gathering, The Brunson Family Reunion. It is through these special loved ones that the legacy of his joyful spirit of singing, joking and playing games will endure for generations to come.

There will be a viewing on Thursday, September 9th from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Harper Funeral home. A private graveside service with family will be held on Saturday. Family and friends can share online condolences at www.harper-funeralhome.com. Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Concho Valley Regional Foodbank, in memory of Johnny Brunson, at 1313 South Hill Street, San Angelo, Texas 76903 or to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to express our deep appreciation for the love and care given by the wonderful staff of the Sagecrest Tucker Unit at Baptist Memorial. We are forever grateful for the quality of life that Johnny experienced in Tucker/Baptist Memorial family of caregivers.

Vicki Chastain Edwards-Hicks

09/07/2021 - 11:07 , by TKing09

Vicki Chastain Edwards-Hicks, 70, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on September 3, 2021, in San Angelo.

Vicki was the surprise package bestowed upon James Monroe (Pappy) Chastain and Mildred Lucille (Millie) Riddell Chastain on October 26, 1950, in San Angelo, Texas. She continued to make their lives interesting until Pappy left in July of 1985 and Millie left in April of 2006. At the time that Vicki was born, her mother and father already had her oldest sister Donna, who thought she would be an only child. Boy, was she surprised! Donna was her best friend and partner in crime, and, because of the age difference, she was like a mom to her. She was also blessed with two older brothers, James Monroe Chastain, Jr. and William Roy Chastain who preceded her in death.

Vicki’s education began at Mrs. Bode's Private School in 1955 and continued through Santa Rita Elementary, Lee Junior High, Central High School, and a couple of years at Angelo State University. For many years she enjoyed the bounty of being a homemaker, mother, and farm hand on a farm just east of San Angelo. There she learned more about life, love, hard work, and friendships than she could ever have garnered in all of her years in school.

She and her first husband (Aris Edwards) were given the privilege of raising 5 children and having a hand in raising many, many more. Their children are Les Edwards (her stepson and game playing partner), Loren Edwards (her stepson and lifelong buddy), Ashley Michelle Edwards, Jaime Daryl Edwards and Joshua Andrew Edwards, all being the loves of her life and reason for being.

When farming got rough, Vicki was blessed to have the opportunity to begin a career in sales management. She worked for Avon for 33 years as a representative (3 years) and a Corporate District Sales Manager, eventually encompassing a wide scope of the State of Texas. It was during this time that she made everlasting friendships in both the representative and co-worker realm. Her most fulfilling accomplishments in this field were being able to help women become confident enough in themselves to grow a business that would contribute to or support their families. God was good to have afforded her this pleasure.

In 2002, she began her career in the funeral business. This was the place that God had intended for her to be for all this time. Through the experience that life gave her, Vicki was able to impart love and understanding to those who would make arrangements for an end-of-life celebration both at the time of need and in the pre-need arenas. Thank you to both Ray Harper and Jeff Harper for being her mentors and friends and for giving her this beautiful experience. In 1992, she met Butch (Morris L.) Hicks who would become her best friend and partner for the rest of her life. They were married on May 20, 1994, and she gained a beautiful and loving daughter, Lori Davis (Jed), and eventually two granddaughters, Chelsi and Haley. Through their partnership, Butch and Vicki raised a grandson, Mason James Edwards, who has been the child that they never had together. They have also had the bountiful opportunity to provide love and guidance to one more very important grandchild in their lives, Oliver Gene Edwards.

Vicki was preceded in death by her father and mother (Grannat and Muhr); her sister, Donna Chastain Huffman Taylor; her brothers, James Monroe Chastain, Jr. and wife Jean, and William Roy Chastain; her two infant children, baby boy Edwards and Kimberly Shea Edwards; and many aunts and uncles. She was also preceded by many beloved pets who gave her boundless and unconditional love and joy.

Left behind to carry on the legacy is Vicki’s loving and patient husband, Butch Hicks; the loves of her life, her children, Les Edwards (Michelle), Lori Davis (Jed) , Loren Edwards (Cheryl), Ashley Edwards, Jaime Edwards and Josh Edwards (Gina); her grandchildren Dakota Edwards, Mason Edwards and Oliver Edwards, Caz and Casey Edwards, Chelsi and Haley Davis, Logan Edwards, Isaac Edwards and Cash Cave. Also left behind to find another warm lap are her pup, Lacey, and her kitties Maow Maow, Ellie Mae and Callie. Vicki was also survived by her niece, Nancy Chastain Frazier, and nephew, Mike Chastain. There are a host of cousins, some of whom she knew and loved and some that she didn’t even know. Then, there are those who would have been a part of her family and were for a long time but weren't in the end. She still loves you all! Anyone who desires to leave a memory in Vicki’s name is asked to forego flowers, as they die. Please help someone else by donating to PAWS for life, CASSIE'S PLACE, CRITTER SHACK or another animal rescue facility, Meals for the Elderly, Make A Wish Foundation or Wounded Warriors Project, which would also be a choice close to her heart. There will be an adoption event in San Angelo, in honor of Vicki’s passion for animals, held at a later time.

The Funeral Service will be 2:00 P.M., Friday, September 10, 2021, at Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Jeremy Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

“I am gone, but hopefully not forgotten by the family and friends that I have loved so very dearly. Please  carry on the traditions and the instructions that you were lovingly (and sometimes forcefully) given. Continue to love one another and be mindful of each other’s needs in my absence as you always have.”

Scooter McCurdy

09/06/2021 - 10:00 , by TKing09

After serving over 57 years in the ministry, God called His faithful servant home to be with Him in Heaven.

A popular & gifted athlete, Scooter graduated from Whitewright High School. Dedicating his life to Christ at the age of 16, he went on to graduate from Howard Payne University and from Seminary in Ft. Worth. He served as Youth Minister or Pastor in the towns of Star, Palestine, Golthwaite, Austin, Cedar Park, Mertzon and San Angelo.

His life in the Ministry and work with Texas Baptist Men has taken him all over the world, and all but 2 states in the United States. He worked as a foreign missionary in Mexico, and helped start the River Ministry in Mexico and Texas. He traveled to Israel 7 times and served on Billy Graham’s Evangelistic team.

His travels in the Ministry have put him in the company of many nationally known celebrities, motivational speakers, musicians and evangelists. Scooter was drafted as a catcher with the White Sox, but learned God had a di?erent plan for his life.

His work in Juvenile Probation gave him an opportunity to witness to many of San Angelo’s youth. He set aside a time each day to pray for each of the kids on his case, working tirelessly to change the course of their lives. He has baptized over 4,000 individuals and impacted the lives of thousands during his Ministry.

Scooter’s favorite scripture in the Bible was Romans 1:16. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” His life was an example of the Greatest Commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, your soul, your mind and strength. The second commandment to love your neighbor as yourself was exemplified in all of his walk.

Those left who will forever miss his testimony & example are his wife Brenda, whom he tried forever to tame & slow down, his best fishing & hunting buddy, Grandson Miller Dougan and wild & crazy four-wheeler driving Granddaughter, Ryan Dougan. He loved Brenda’s sons, Josh Dougan (and wife India) of Denver, CO and Joey Dougan (and wife Amy) of San Angelo as though they were his own. His sisters, nephews & nieces, and thousands of friends know we will never get to hear Scooter’s words of encouragement his ability to make us all laugh especially at his jokes he thought were so funny. He made a difference in our lives.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at 2:00 PM at New Hope Bible Church in San Angelo, Texas, officiated by Jimmy Hill and Mills Caraway.

Memorials can be made, if desired, to the last church he pastored before he retired in June 2021, New Hope Bible Church, 6146 Appaloosa Trail, San Angelo, TX. 76901.

Alice Cora Glass

09/06/2021 - 09:57 , by TKing09

Alice Cora Glass fell into the arms of Jesus Christ on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the age of 88. She was born November 4, 1932, to William (Bill) and Stella Schwartz. She was raised in Wall, Texas with her parents and five siblings. She attended Sykes School through the 8th grade, Wall High School for 9th and 10th grade, then went to San Angelo High School until Christmas break. She told her parents she didn’t like it and wasn’t going back, and she didn’t.

She was a homemaker, wife, and mom of 6 children, and later a grandmother of 16 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 15. On April 12, 1955, she married the love of her life, Edgar Glass, and moved to the farm between Grape Creek and Carlsbad, where she lived the rest of her life as a wife and mother. She was very involved in being a home room parent and the teachers always looked forward to having the Glass kids in their class, because they knew they would get an “Alice Glass pecan pie” for Christmas. She was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Daughters Altar Society for many years. She was an avid quilter and made many, many quilts over the years. For Christmas in 2020, she gave out 28 handmade quilts to all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years, she has donated numerous quilts to the West Texas Rehab Roundup Auction. She was very proud of her yard, flowers, and garden. She spent many hours every summer mowing her yard, which was very large, even as recently as last week from the excitement of getting her tractor mower back from being repaired. There were many times if someone came by her house in the mornings, they would find her mowing or chopping weeds in her night gown. She just couldn’t wait to get out there as soon as the sun came up. She was a 3 generation Water Valley Wildcat fan and made every ball game (football, volleyball, basketball) for the past 45 years. She attended her youngest grandson’s football game last Friday night. She loved family gatherings and just might have played a little Beer Pong with some of the grandkids a few times. She also belonged to two Bunko groups and at least two different quilting groups so she was always busy making or doing something.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edgar, daughter Gaynell Green, sister Mercedes Jost, brother David Schwartz, brothers-in-law Sylvester Glass, Roland Glass, Jimmy Schniers, and sisters-in-law Ester Glass, Nancy Glass and Carolyn Glass. She is survived by five children, Charles Glass and wife Nora, Travis Glass and wife Angie, Coleen Glass, Janet Jordan and husband Wayne, Roger Glass and wife Melissa, and son-in-law Troy Green. Grandchildren Lynley Glass, Tanner Counts, Amber Fitzpatrick and fiancé Scott Fulcher, Ashley Fitzpatrick, Briana Crooks and husband Ty, Devan Glass, Conner Glass, Jisele Jansante and husband Jason, Shelby Green, Madison Green, Samantha Fournet and husband Jude, Taylor Jordan and wife Shani, Hannah Landers and husband Landon, Kenzie Jordan, Zachary Glass and wife Taylor, and Abby Hoelscher and husband Slayton. Great-grandchildren include Kyleigh Doss, Greyson Mediano, Autumn Fitzpatrick, Kinzlee Fulcher, Kellan Fulcher, Hadley Jordan, Leighton Jordan, Tinley Jordan, Wyatt Jansante, Natalie Fournet, Jett Fournet, Holden Landers, Tripp Landers, Posie Glass and Ceily Crooks. She is also survived by sisters LaVerne Schniers and Carolyn Strube and husband Jimmy, one brother Billy Schwartz and wife BettyAnn, sister-in-law Betty Joyce Schwartz, and brothers-in-law John Jost, Dennis Glass, Jerome Glass, James Glass, Bill Glass and wife Phyllis.

The Vigil Service will be 6:00 P.M., Monday, September 6, 2021, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Choutapalli as celebrant. The burial will follow at St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be the grandsons. Memorials can be made to West Texas Rehab or a favorite charity.

Gina Renee Gomez

09/06/2021 - 09:55 , by TKing09

On August 28, 2021, Gina Gomez, 45, of Big Lake, TX, entered eternal rest and gained her angel wings. Gina was born on August 21, 1976 to Rodolfo and Eustolia Ortiz in Iraan, TX. She graduated from Reagan County High School in 1994. It was then that she and Marco first met.

Marco and Gina met her senior year of high school while she was working as a lifeguard. He was only an 8th grader and thought it was funny to splash her. After graduating, she left for college then came back to Big Lake 3 years later with her firstborn son, Julian. She was working at the grocery store when she and Marco reconnected. He was a sophomore at the time. They became great friends and although he was young, he always made sure she was okay. A few years passed and she had a daughter, Alexia. Even then, Marco always made sure that Gina and her kids were taken care of.

Being best friends eventually grew into a more serious relationship and into a family. Marco and Gina married in July of 2005 and had one more child, Sebastian. They spent a total of 16 years married, 18 years together, and 24 years of being best friends.

He was her Jack and she was his Sally. They loved each other unconditionally through the good times and the bad. She was truly a blessing to him and the best wife and mother her kids could have asked for. They will miss so much of her. Her big beautiful smile, art nights where Marco would be painting on one half of the table and Gina would be making cakes on the other half of the table. Marco will miss her laugh, her hugs and kissing her cheeks a million times before going to work. The smell of her baking in the kitchen… he will miss everything about her and never stop loving and finding his way back to his Sally.

Her kids will also miss her dearly. She was everything to them and they were everything to her. She was very proud and supported them like no other, no matter the circumstance. She was 100% behind her kids on anything and everything. From sports to band, to even the trouble they got in. It didn’t matter. She always made them the best birthday parties and the best cakes. She loved everything about her family and children. Her husband and her kids are so so very grateful for the time spent with her here and will always love, cherish and miss everything about her. As she always said, “Family is EVERYTHING”

Her family wanted everyone to know that Gina also loved her community and all of her customers dearly. She loved putting smiles on people’s faces and helping others in any way she could, especially with her cakes. She donated so many cakes and cupcakes to teachers and local organizations. She also loved to treat her neighbors with goodies from time to time. Her favorite way to treat the community and celebrate her favorite holiday was to open the house on Halloween and give away cupcakes, candy, popcorn balls, and witches brew punch. We know the community will also miss her.
Gina was predeceased in death by her parents Rodolfo and Eustolia Ortiz. She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Marco Gomez, her son Julian Perez, daughter Alexia Castañeda, son Sebastian Gomez, and grandson Matteo Vélez Perez. She is also survived by her siblings Rodolfo (Rudy) Ortiz, Jr and wife Sandra, Rolando (Roy) Ortiz and wife Margarita Castañeda, Richard A. Ortiz and wife Juanita, Rose Ortiz Armendarez and husband Alonzo, Rebecca Ortiz Abercromby and husband James, and Roberta Ortiz Barrera and husband Rudy. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and other family members that loved her dearly.

The family requests that all flowers and notes be sent to Harper Funeral Home in San Angelo, TX by 11am on Friday, September 3rd. There will be a public viewing at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in San Angelo, TX on Friday, September 3rd from 4pm – 8pm with a Rosary being said at 7pm. The Funeral will be at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Big Lake, TX on Saturday, September 4th at 11am. Pall bearers for her services will be Roy Ortiz, Daniel Price, Julian Perez, Ricardo Gomez, Jason Wilha, and Albert Gomez. Gina will then be laid to rest at Glenrest Cemetery in Big Lake, TX.
