Jerry Andrews

10/17/2016 - 12:14 , by johnb

On October 9, 2016 while at home surrounded by family and friends, Jerry Lee Andrews moved to his heavenly home with our Lord and Savior. Surely he was pleased when he saw his Girlfriend-Lola there waiting.
Jerry Andrews was born in the tiny town of Whitewright, Texas on February 18, 1927, the youngest of four children. His mother, Lora Andrews, moved the family to San Angelo in 1941, when Jerry was 14 years old.
From the beginning, Jerry, nicknamed “Whitewright,” loved his new big city,… San Angelo and his school, Blackshear, which he describes in his memoirs as “beautiful” and “magnificent”. He said, “My first happy experience in San Angelo was meeting the young girl who was destined to be my bride, Lola Gertrude Rogers. She was the first girl I met on my first day at Blackshear School.” It was also during this time that he gave his life to the Lord and joined St. Paul Baptist Church, where he was an active member until his health failed.
Jerry attended Blackshear until the 11th grade; he then joined the Navy to avoid being drafted into the Army during WWII. After two years Jerry got out of the Navy, as the war was winding down in Europe. However, fighting was still continuing in Japan and he decided to go back in - this time to the Army. The war ended shortly thereafter and he returned home.
After the military, Jerry attended Texas College in Tyler, TX, studying American History and Sociology; he had dreams of becoming a teacher. However, being a self-starter, he eventually returned to San Angelo and began working at Clatterbuck’s Cleaners. In the meantime, Lola Rogers, his childhood sweetheart had also returned to San Angelo from attending Dillard University in Louisiana. They rekindled their love and shortly thereafter, Jerry married the love of his life.
Jerry always took a great interest in serving the community. He served on the City Planning Committee, as well as being president of the Lions Club for two years. Jerry was also instrumental in getting Randolph Street changed to Martin Luther King Drive. He said he thought he would never live to see a Black president – but, God…
Jerry retired from Goodyear Proving Grounds in 1987, after 20 years of employment, which gave him the opportunity to operate his own business full-time. Lola’s Washateria, Since 1945, which he and his wife operated.
Jerry was always a man who loved his family and leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life and accomplishments, his three daughters- Betty Andrews, Robbie A. Raven (William “Big Bill” Raven), and Donna Andrews, all of San Angelo; three grandchildren, Veronda Vilmin of San Angelo, Texas, Vernon Andrews (Shelby Andrews), of Spokane, Washington and Sancie Andrews, of San Angelo; One Great Grandchild, Rylee Andrews of Spokane Washington; and a nephew which he raised, Jerry Freeman (Georgia Ann Freeman) of Chesapeake, Va.
The Family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M., Friday, October 14, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home. The funeral Service will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, October 15, 2016 at St. Paul Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
“I’ve had a good life. I’ve loved my family and tried to be a good husband and father. I’ve contributed to the building of my community. All in all, I’ve done my best.” (from “Whitewright”, the Jerry Andrews Story)

Modene Jones Williams

10/09/2016 - 22:12 , by johnb

Life is a book in volumes three,
The past, the present and the year-to-be.
The past is written and laid away,
The present we're writing everyday.
The last and best of volumes three,
Is locked from sight - God keeps the key.

Modene Jones Williams was born October 5, 1928 at home in San Angelo, Texas to Annie Clayton and James Wilburn. She passed away on October 3, 2016, just shy of her 88th birthday, in Abilene, Texas. She fought hard, but knew when God called it was time to rest and enter heaven's gate. A loving wife, devoted Mom, and fun Mema--a true friend to all, she will be missed.

Modene enjoyed a variety of activities including jigsaw puzzles, her iPad, emails and "sol", all kinds of crafts, cooking--favorites "Mema" eggs and fudge, family get togethers, playing with her grandpets, holiday festivities, collecting Santas, listening to country and gospel music, and occasionally singing karaoke. She was a "keeper" and an "organizer". But her true passion was genealogy. Lots of "HO" trips to explore ancestry, looking for those family roots and actually finding her "family" tree still alive in a vacant field. Stopping off for fun in wild animal parks, and feeding the giraffes through the car window. Finding the chicken crossing that country road, affectionately called "Ho Ho", he followed the journey, inspiring many jokes and interesting stories. We will miss her annual Christmas tree ornament depicting a memorable past event, but will continue to enjoy those already on the tree. Over her 87 years she compiled volumes of family history, memories and handwritten incredible stories. A gift we will treasure forever.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Wilson, Michael Wilson, Phil Williams, Larry Knight, Jim Morrow, Donald Cooper, Jim Forman and Jim Bob Forman.

Modene was predeceased by her husband Glendon Westbrook, father of her children; husband Hugh Jones; sons Glen Perry Westbrook and Larry Dan Westbrook; two sisters Edna Mae Morrow and Rosa Lee Hulsey.

Modene is survived by her husband B. Jack Williams; her daughter Glenna Wilson and husband Dennis, of Austin; her daughter Rhonda Nixon and husband Zane of Houston, and son Terry Glen Westbrook. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Michael, Michele, Hillary and Caroline, one great grandchild, Harper Rose, many nieces and nephews and wonderful extended family members.

Visitation will be 6:00pm to 8:00pm Friday October 7, 2016 at Robert Massie Funeral Home, 402 Rio Concho Drive, San Angelo. Services will be 10:00am Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Southgate Church of Christ, 528 Country Club Road, San Angelo with Minister Paul Shero, officiating. Burial will follow at Belvedere Cemetery, 3504 Arden Road, San Angelo.

The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers in Abilene for all their help and support and the many friends and family who sat by her side--making each day a new adventure with stories and colorful drawings. Thank you to Jack for being a loving husband and helping to make her last 15 years special.

In lieu of flowers please give to your favorite charity.

In God's care you rest above,
In our hearts you rest with love.
Memories of you are ours to keep,
Our words are few but our love is deep.

Harrison McDale "Mac" Farrington

10/02/2016 - 20:04 , by johnb

Harrison McDale “Mac” Farrington, 82, died Friday, September 30 after an Extended illness. He is survived by two daughters, Carla Smith of Sonora and Terri Van Kirk of Kerrville, granddaughters Sterling Smith and Katherine Van Kirk, and grandson, Cody Van Kirk, two sons in law, Olie Smith and Chris Edwards. He also has an angel in heaven, granddaughter Stevie Smith. He is also survived by three siblings, Lolita Branham of Grape Creek, Myra Denton of Georgetown and Jay Farrington of San Angelo.
Harrison McDale “Mac” Farrington was born September 3, 1934 with his twin sister, Myra Farrington Denton. By the time Mac and Myra were teenagers they had each developed their own unique personalities and were no longer referred to outside the family as “The Twins.”
Mac graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 1956, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1962. He pastored Baptist churches in Miles, San Angelo, Loraine, Brownwood and Post for two decades. Mac’s strength as a pastor in counseling, friendship and visitation endeared him to his church members even more than his sermons and services. Mac married Jean Herring of San Angelo in 1954. They reared two wonderful daughters and were together for thirty-two years.
After retiring from the ministry, Mac started a new career; his experience in pastoring helped prepare him for his appointment as Director for the San Angelo Lighthouse for the Blind. He later held management level positions at Pool International, Concho Career Institute and with Jacobs Construction International as Safety Director for large projects nationwide. Mac married Susan Barnhizer in 1988. They were married for twenty-five years. He worked into his Seventies at Jacobs, a job that required him and Susan to live in California, Boston and other U.S. locations. Susan preceded him in death in 2011.
Mac was generous to a fault. He frequently helped family and friends with everything from car repairs to carpentry and loans to help them through rough spots. He never asked for repayment.
Mac’s best characteristic was his happy demeanor, his sense of humor and his upbeat approach to work. At every job he became everybody’s friend, an unusual situation for a Safety Officer. The safety record they achieved was based on trust and caring rather than fear and scrutiny. He was generous to a fault.
Friends will be saddened by news of his demise, but happy at the joy his memory brings them. Affectionately known as “Papa Mac” he never even knew how many friends he had, but he collected them wherever he went. Late in life to still be working professionally, he became friends with his bosses, his younger peers and his assistants. The Funeral Service will be 10: 30 A.M., Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. Earl Dunn officiating. The Burial will follow at Sonora Cemetery at 3:00 P.M., where he will be laid to rest by his beloved granddaughter Stevie Smith.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Concho Valley MHMR Services or a favorite charity.
