Hicks Bobby Gene

08/01/2018 - 09:07 , by brandyp

Bobby Gene Hicks, 88, of San Angelo, Texas went to be with the Lord on Monday July 30, 2018.

He was born on June 20, 1930 in Seymour, Texas. Bob married Mona Bell Bly on April 8, 1951 and they welcomed two children, Monette in 1954 and Michael in 1958.

Bob started his work career at age ten setting bowling pins, and by the age of sixteen, he was buying and selling cattle. His adventurous spirit began to emerge as he rodeoed and learned to break horses, which would be a job he would have in the future on different ranches.

At age eighteen, after graduating with three of his siblings from the Early High School Class of 1948, he moved to San Angelo and started his career with Lone Star Gas Company, which would span more than thirty-eight years. He served in the U.S. Army for two years toward the end of the Korean Conflict. Bob was first and foremost a family man. He was a long-time member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he and Mona raised their children. He was honored to be a Mason 32nddegree (Scottish Rite).

His love of hunting took feet in his founding of the San Angelo Clay Bird Association. He also was a passionate member of the NRA, a member of the Home Builders Association, and the San Angelo Restaurant Association. Bob’s diligence resulted in him being named Outstanding Promotional Representative for Lone Star Gas in 1974 and San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the year 1981-84. Of special note, he was recognized as Coming Home King of Early High School in 1993.

He was preceded in death by his parents Opie and Odessa Westfall and all six of his siblings. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Mona Bly Hicks, Daughter Monette Hicks Harris and husband Hilton Harris, Son Michael Lee Hicks, Daughter-in-Law Candis Hicks, Grandchildren Courtnie Harris, Tesa Thompson (Bryan), Taylor Harris (Travis), and Hunter Hicks. Great Grandchildren Will Wagner, Kennedy and Blaine Foster, and Bly Harris.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday August 2nd at Johnson’s Funeral Home.

Anyone who knew Bob Hicks would attest to his ethical and moral character and integrity. It was said best years ago by his long time cherished friend Paul English- “Bob Hicks is the only man that I have ever known that I would play poker with over the telephone.”

Donations in Bob's memory may be made to Meals For The Elderly or a charity of your choice.
