Tommy Max Sanders, 79, of San Angelo died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug 12, 2019. Max was born in San Angelo, Texas on September 26, 1939, to Jewel Irene Key and William Thomas Sanders. He grew up on Mt Nebo in Grape Creek, Texas and attended Grape Creek Elementary School before moving to San Angelo where he graduated from Edison Junior High and from San Angelo High School in 1958. Following high school, he went to San Angelo College before earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas in Austin. In 1962, in a contribution to the nation and in support of the county he loves, he joined the United States Marine Corps. Upon earning his commission, he requested to serve as an infantry officer. He subsequently deployed to Vietnam where he served three, year-long tours in combat, mostly with the 1st Marine Division. Battles fought include Operation Texas and Chu Lai. He was awarded a Bronze Star with a Combat V for meritorious service in a combat zone. He served 8 years of active duty and retired from the reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. His influence and love for the Marine Corps lead many others to service, including his own daughter. Following his service overseas, Max earned a Masters of Science from University of Northern Arizona, and a Doctorate in Physical Education from the University of Oregon. Continuing to pursue his interest in human performance, he moved to San Diego, California. He continued post-doctoral work at The University of California, doing cardio-pulmonary research before moving back to San Angelo in 1978. All his life Max loved physical conditioning. His passion for exercise led countless people, young and old alike, into long-distance running, biking and triathloning. His encouragement regarding all physical activity was to ‘never quit’. From a very early age, the outdoors drew his attention. Whether hunting, camping, fishing or exercising, he loved being outside. With patience, he instructed many grandchildren, nieces and nephews how to shoot, seine a creek and run a trotline. Even in his chosen profession of construction, he was able to spend time outdoors. Max, practiced as a commercial and residential developer for 30 years in San Angelo. His integrity was important to him and according to friends and family, he was the most honest man most have ever dealt with – his reputation was sterling and above reproach. He married Mary Eugenia Workman of Chattanooga, Tennessee on November 28, 1964 and their marriage lasted 54 years. His wife, his daughters, Rachel Fabre and Sarah Ford, seven grandchildren and his siblings: brother Dwayne and his wife Dee, brother Monty, and sister Wanda Brothers and her husband Allen survive him. Max leaves behind many relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. Max was intensely fun and loved practical jokes. He was incredibly generous and kind. He leaves behind an enormous legacy, big shoes to fill, and even bigger holes in the hearts of everyone that knew and loved him. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, Aug 17th at 4:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home. Immediately following, there will be a graveside service with a Marine Honor Guard at the Grape Creek cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 preceding funeral service at Johnson Funeral Home. Evans Richard Lavon

08/16/2019 - 14:11 , by zoey@hydeinter…

Richard Lavon Evans passed away on Wednesday, August 14th in the Cornerstone Hospital in Round Rock, Texas, surrounded by his loving family and his little dog, Buster.

Richard was born on January 5, 1936 in Turkey, Texas to Newton and Ardell Evans and spent most of his childhood in Colorado City. His family later moved to Snyder where he graduated from Snyder High School in 1954. During high school, he started working at the grocery store, and after he returned from the Navy, he became the manager of the Furrs Supermarket in Midland and then later Odessa. In 1957, he married Mary Ellen Green, and they had two children, Richard Lavon Jr., who died shortly after birth, and Karen Denise. In 1968, Richard and Mary moved to Caps, Texas so that he could pursue the ministry. He was the pastor of Caps United Methodist Church while attending McMurray College from 1968 to 1970. When Richard’s and Mary’s marriage ended, Richard returned to the grocery business and settled in San Angelo where he lived for the rest of his life. On January 27, 1973, he married Joy Ratliff Bale and claimed her three children, Nelda, Larry, and Don, as his own. He later went into the radiator business with Joy’s brother-in-law, Jake Grimes, and Jake’s son-in-law, Gene Baxter. He worked hard to make sure his family was financially cared for, but his passion remained the church, as he volunteered in countless positions at First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. He loved teaching Sunday School and serving breakfast to the homeless. He was also passionate about woodworking, building furniture for his family and whatever his friends needed to make their lives easier.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, his brother Larry Evans, his sister Billie Jo Holman, and his brother-in-law and childhood friend Wendell Womack. He is survived by his wife, Joy Evans, his four children and their spouses, Nelda and Henry Dusek, Larry and Teresa Bale, Karen and Dave Collier, and Don Bale, his six grandchildren, Jenny Lawson, Lisa Bir, Brian Bale, Ben Bale, Mitch Collier, and Rhiannon Bale, and his five great-grandchildren, Hailey Lawson and Gabi, Sam, Bella, and Ellie Bir. He is also survived by his three sisters, LaJuan Womack, Tommie Jean Boswell, and Mable Kay Rodabaugh.

The family would like to thank the members of the Bayith Sunday School class for all the love and support they showed Richard and Joy through the years, including these past ten weeks of his hospitalization. We would also like to think his friend Karen Schmeltekopf for the support she has given him as he cared for Joy during her illness these past three years.

Family visitation will be held on Friday night from 7 to 8 p.m. at Harper Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Following the service there will be a reception at First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the organizations Richard supported, Planned Parenthood or Bread for the World. As a man who lived a simple life of compassion, Richard would be most honored by a simple act of kindness toward a family member, friend, or stranger.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. –Psalm 23:6

Mertz Mortimer Leonard

08/16/2019 - 14:05 , by zoey@hydeinter…

Mortimer Leonard Mertz, horseman, polo player, and livestock man was quoted as saying he had had a wonderful life and wouldn’t have changed a thing, though maybe it could have rained a little more. Mort passed away peacefully on August 14, 2019, in San Angelo, Texas. Mort was born in San Angelo, Texas on October 18, 1923. His parents, Len and Ernestine Mayer Mertz, were both from early-day ranching and banking families.

Mort graduated third in his class from San Angelo High School in 1941. He was also named All-West Texas as a guard in the 1940 season and was selected to play in the Texas High School coaches All-Star Game played in Houston at Rice University Stadium.

An unusual occurrence took place during that game. Each position had two players. Unfortunately, the other player at right guard was hurt in practice and Mort played the entire game.
Mort attended Texas A&M from 1941 to 1943 and while in school was on the polo and football teams. In 1947 he graduated with a degree in Animal Science after serving three years in the Army, including eight months overseas in Europe.

In 1950 he was recalled to active duty and served as Company Commander, Company C, 66th Tank Battalion, 2nd Armored Division in Gonsenheim, Mainz, Germany.

After leaving the service in 1952, Mort went to work on a ranch he and his brother Joe had purchased in 1949 north of Pie Town, New Mexico. During the Christmas holidays of 1952 the brothers went home to San Angelo. At a party during their stay, Mort met Madolyn Powell. The attraction was strong and a year and a half later Mort left the New Mexico ranch and moved back to Texas. On April 20, 1954 they were married and together they ranched in Irion, Reagan, Crockett, and Schleicher counties.

In past years, Mort served on the Reagan County Agricultural & Stabilization Committee, the Reagan County Water Supply District, the Schleicher County ISD board, the Plateau Underground Water Conservation and Supply District, and the Texas Animal Health Commission. He was also a director of the Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association, as well as a past president of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association.

He is survived by his wife Madolyn; three sons and their wives Len and Trish, Mort and Susan, and Michael and Trina; his daughter Susan Slaughter; and his brother Joe, brother-in-law Jimmie Powell and sister-in-law Marolyn Bean. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, James Mertz, Phillip Mertz, Will Slaughter, Louis Mertz, Lawson Mertz, Madolyn Mertz Brinig, Len Slaughter, Arden Mertz, Chase Mertz, Wyatt Mertz and his seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his daughter-in-law Frances Schneider Mertz, and his son-in-law William “Dub” Slaughter, Jr.

A memorial service honoring his life and legacy will be held on Friday, August 16, 2019, at The Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart at 10:00 a.m.

Memorials may be made to The Children’s Miracle Network, P.O. Box 1879, San Angelo, Texas 76902 or a charity of your choice.
