Carol Ann (Halliday) Bonds

03/13/2025 - 09:08 , by TKing09

Carol Ann (Halliday) Bonds, 77, affectionately known as "Bebs" or “CAB” to family and friends, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and leadership in pursuit of excellence in education and selfless service to her family and the communities she profoundly impacted.

Carol Ann was born on September 28, 1947, in Jackson, Mississippi, to William Barham (W.B.) Halliday and Katherine Louella (Walker) Halliday, and was the oldest of three siblings. She graduated from Murrah High School in 1965, where she was an active member of the Murrah Misses Drill Team and the Murrah Singers. Though she joked that the drill team was the closest she ever came to being in athletics, her musical talent manifested beautifully in vocal, piano, and violin performances.

Her journey led her to Houston Baptist College (now Houston Christian University), where fate intervened on move-in day as she met her future husband, Charles (Charlie) G Bonds, who offered to help carry her things. They were married on October 12, 1968, in Jackson. At HBC, Carol Ann excelled academically and socially, participating in the College Singers and being chosen as a class favorite for three years. Her accolades included being named Homecoming Princess, Miss HBC, and receiving the President’s Award. She graduated in just three years with degrees in English and Education, setting the stage for a remarkable career.

Carol Ann began teaching first graders in Aldine and Cy-Fair ISDs before her growing family followed her parents’ relocation to rural Central Texas near Holland in 1980. Her passion for educating young people took her to Holland ISD in 1981, where she served as a third-grade teacher, writing instructor, and later as the elementary school principal in 1989. Her knack for helping students improve their writing proficiency culminated in her authorship of Show Me the Way, a book designed to be paired with workshops she provided teachers in school districts across Texas. Her innovative approaches were featured in the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association Journal.

Continuing her academic journey, Carol Ann earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1988 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994. Her research won Dissertation of the Year from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

Carol Ann’s contributions to education were impactful. She was named Principal of the Year in 1995 by the Texas Elementary Principals Association and became the Superintendent of Rogers ISD that year. A visionary leader, she spearheaded grant writing initiatives, securing millions in funding for integrating educational technology, rural health care access, and collaborative student engagement projects with community members, educators, and students across the nation as part of her Kids as Agents of Change program. She helped establish the first school-based health center of its kind in Texas and was recognized nationally for her efforts, receiving the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leader Award. Her work was featured in Hope Magazine and Reader’s Digest, highlighting her as one of the nation’s five Health Heroes in 2001. She was a finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2001.

In 2003, Carol Ann took on the role of Superintendent at Livingston ISD, navigating the district through numerous successes and challenges. In 2007, she transitioned to lead San Angelo ISD, where she formed strong partnerships with Goodfellow Air Force Base, spearheaded facility infrastructure improvement plans, and positioned the district as a leader in academic accountability in West Texas. Her contributions earned her the Region 15 Superintendent of the Year Award in 2010 and the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year Award in 2015 as she neared retirement from public education.

Carol Ann’s leadership extended to state and national levels, serving on the UIL Legislative Council and being appointed by Governor Abbott to the Texas Military Preparedness Commission in 2016 and 2020. She served on the US Air Force’s Air Education and Training Corps Commander’s Civic Group and the Air Force Chief of Staff Civic Leader Program. Her commitment to supporting military communities and awarding grants to defense-related projects was a testament to her passion for service.

Carol Ann had a sharp wit and loved good-natured humor and banter. She believed in making people feel heard, important, and valued. She demanded high standards while also fostering a positive and enthusiastic climate. She was masterful at leveraging the power of encouragement and could deliver constructive advice with grace and care. She could challenge the brightest minds while ensuring that struggling individuals felt capable of succeeding. Her generosity was boundless, and she lived a life of significance to purposes greater than herself. This was evidenced by taking groups to enjoy our national parks, sending cards filled with leadership lessons, rolling napkins and knitting sweater caps for patrons of Neighbors Café, a local soup kitchen, to preparing snack packages for incoming trainees at Goodfellow Air Force Base, and hosting international trainees in her home.

The Apostle Paul described the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Carol Ann reflected Christ’s light through her radiant persona, bearing a complete and consistent bounty of these fruits for everyone she generously welcomed into her space.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Charlie; daughter Paula Richardson and her husband Brian, son Craig Bonds and wife Monica; four granddaughters Megan DiCenzo, Allison DiCenzo, Carly Bonds, and Macy Bonds; brother Warren Halliday and sister-in-law Karey; sister Mary Klentzman and brother-in-law Rick; brother- and sister-in-law Aubrey and Jan Knox; numerous nephews and nieces and their families; multitudes of friends and colleagues; and the thousands of students, educators, and military service members whose lives she touched.

Celebrations of Carol Ann’s life will be held during a visitation on Friday, March 28th from 5 – 7pm at Harper Funeral Home in San Angelo, funeral service at First Baptist Church San Angelo on Saturday, March 29th at 11am, followed by a brief graveside service on Sunday, March 30th at 2pm at Val Verde Baptist Church Cemetery in Holland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church San Angelo in support of the Neighbor’s Café, or a charity of your choice, in honor of her lifelong commitment to education and community service.

Raul Flores Flores, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away surrounded by his family on March 11, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on October 19, 1931, in Sanderson, Texas, Raul spent his early years working on various ranches alongside his family before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force from July 1951 to July 1955.

After his military service, Raul settled in San Angelo, Texas, where he dedicated his career to serving the community. He worked as a deputy with the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Department before moving into construction with McCrea Construction Co., where he provided support at Ethicon in the facilities maintenance department. Flores (Kaylyn), and Bianca Flores; and eleven great-grandchildren: Kryslynn, Elia, Gianni, Devin, Dylan, Rebecca, Antonio, Jolene, Layla, Jude, and Penelope. Raul also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and members of his extended Flores family in San Angelo, who were always there with love and support.

Visitation for Raul will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025 from 6-8 pm at Johnson's Funeral Home. His Funeral Service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, March 15, 2025 in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

A special thank you to his primos and primas for their visits and kindness, and to Visiting Angels, St. Gabriel Hospice, and Krystal from Shannon Home Health for their compassionate care. A very heartfelt thank you to our prima Sandra Flores for her constant love and support for primo Roy.

Samuel John Wylie III

03/10/2025 - 21:30 , by TKing09

Samuel John Wylie, III, born September 16, 1948, passed away on March 7, 2025 due to complications from esophageal cancer and leukemia. Born in Sherman, Texas to Samuel John Wylie, Jr. and Josephine Bonnie Franz, John was the light of his parents lives. As a child, John was an active and imaginative boy. He could often be found running around at family gatherings, catching critters, and playing practical jokes. He loved telling the story of the time his grandfather, Ezra Frantz, went to take a bath and found the tub full of snakes (no doubt, his mother loved that story less).

John was a preacher’s kid. He credit’s his father’s career with providing him opportunities to meet new people, experience new environments, and enjoy new schools. John graduated from Denison High School in 1967. He enjoyed his time in the FFA while in school. He joined the United States Navy in 1967 and served until 1971 as an aircraft structural mechanic. While on active duty, John was stationed in Key West, Florida until 1969 and then transferred to Virginia Beach, Virginia where he stayed until he was discharged. After leaving the service, John returned to Denison, Texas and worked as a brick layer’s assistant for a short time. He then worked for John-Mansville, a company that specialized in fabricating plastic conduit pipe, before transitioning to Geophysical Services, Inc., which located oil on land and beneath the water. John moved to San Angelo, Texas in 1975, and worked for a time at the San Angelo Center in Carlsbad, Texas. At the encouragement of his uncle, Dr. Escal Duke, John attended Angelo State University and graduated with his Bachelor of Science, majoring in psychology, in 1981. He graduated with his Masters of Education in 1989. John worked as a public school teacher with San Angelo Independent School District from 1980-1989. He decided that he would be able to better connect with and help his students and their families as a therapist. From 1989 to 1991, he worked with Dr. Rider at West Texas Medical Associates before going into private practice as a licensed professional counselor in 1992. While in private practice he worked with MHMR as a Crisis Resolution Specialist, a contract provider for the State of Texas, a counselor for Hallman, Wylie, & Ries, a professional trainer for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a provider for the West Texas Boys Ranch, and more. He retired for the first time in 2003, returned to private practice briefly, before accepting a position at River Crest Hospital, returning to private practice once more, and retiring for a final time in 2016.

He married Kathleen White on June 2, 1979 in San Angelo, Texas. They met at Angelo State University in the registration line - as their last names both started with “W.” Kathleen recalled that there was an extra credit assignment for one of their classes and John told her that they were predestined to go together. It was fate. They enjoyed getting to know one another driving around in her Fiat while John sang “I’m a Hog For You” and drinking coffee at the student union. Their marriage welcomed the birth of two daughters, Heather and Caitlin, and numerous beloved animals (as John’s personal rule was “no animal left behind”). John’s fun-loving nature extended to fatherhood. He would make up stories to tell his daughters at bedtime, would play practical jokes (like leaving fake poop in the hallway - his favorite prank), and finding ways to connect with them through classic rock or horror movies. He welcomed the birth of his grandson, Harrison, in 2022 and enjoyed spending time with “his boy” as much as he could. He spoke of wanting to take his grandson fishing and enjoying watching the way he explored the world around him.

John was a natural storyteller. He loved regaling his friends and family with antics from his past: racing cars, his time in the Navy, and time spent growing up in North Texas. In his retirement, John enjoyed spending time with his friends Bill and Janet Norman. He especially enjoyed fishing with Bill. The two had many a fine time hunting good fishing spots all over Tom Green, Coke, and Concho counties. Bill, he looked forward to a day he could fish again with you. Thank you for being a brother from another mother for many years. He also enjoyed spending time with his dear friends Beth and Harold Peterson. Beth, you were a wonderful friend and mentor. Thank you for being such a treasure to us and courtesy aunt to our girls.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Josephine Wylie; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ivan and Dot White; brother-in-law, Patrick White; and nephew, Jason White. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathleen; his daughter Heather and son-in-law Zachary Knappe; grandson, Harrison Knappe; daughter Caitlin Wylie; sister-in-law Cynthia White; sister-in-law Patti White; nephew Brian White and husband Ron Vineyard; cousin Mary Ellen Astudillo; as well as numerous extended family members and many beloved friends.

The Wylie family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Forlano; Dr. Cummings and the staff at Shannon Oncology; Dr. Meenavalli with Palliative Care; the wonderful nurses of Shannon’s Intensive Care Unit; and Dr. Hitchcock of Hospice of San Angelo. John wanted to encourage anyone with acid reflux to please discuss the possibility of cancer with your doctor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please donate to an animal charity of your choosing. Private services to be held for friends and family.

John spent many years caring for clients and giving to his community. He would like to remind everyone about the importance of taking care of one another; in the words of Ram Dass: “We’re all just walking each other home.”

Robert Andrew Pace

03/10/2025 - 21:17 , by TKing09

Robert Andrew Pace, a good and faithful servant of our Lord, answered the Master's call and quietly transitioned from his earthly labor to his heavenly reward on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at West Texas Hospice in San Angelo. Mr. Pace was born on November 17, 1938, in Beaver Falls Pennsylvania to the late William and Beatrice Pace, the third child of four. He was preceded in death by his older brother Bill Pace and sister Barbara Pace Sears.

He was a 1956 graduate of Beaver Falls High School. After high school, Robert enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. There, he pursued a 26-year career as an Electronics Avionics Technician, serving in Libya, Japan, Greece, Vietnam, and Turkey, as well as serving in several locations within the United States. While in the service of his country, Robert met and married Ernestine Virginia Byers in 1959.

Appreciating and understanding the importance of an education, Mr. Pace attended the University of Maryland. He later received both his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Angelo State University. He acquired his teaching certificate as well.

In keeping with his spiritual upbringing, Mr. Pace became a faithful member of the St. Paul Baptist Church in 1976. He was ordained as a deacon in1990. Over the years, he served as a trustee, and as an instructor in the Sunday School and BTU. Robert was a dedicated and diligent member in the church and participated in the weekly prayer meetings and Bible study at St. Paul.

Having been a resident of San Angelo since 1965, Mr. Pace was very active in community affairs. He was the Social Service Director of the San Angelo Health Department and later taught Psychology at Howard College and Angelo State University. Civically, he served for seven years as president of the San Angelo branch of the NAACP. He also served as Board President for the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark; he served on the United Way Board and served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

In his spare time, Robert loved collecting coins, he loved history, he loved the Pittsburg Steelers, and he loved his hometown hero Joe Namath. His favorite scripture is Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV):

"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Robert's favorite hymn is "Pass Me Not". God heard Robert's humble cry. God did not pass him by.

Left to cherish fond and loving memories are his wife, Ernestine Pace of the home; a daughter, Arlene Pace of Austin, Texas; a son, Kevin Pace of Shelby, North Carolina; a sister, Rebecca Jones of New Haven, Connecticut, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family of Robert Pace is grateful for all the love, kindness, care and sympathy that you have shown during this time of bereavement.

Special thanks to the Nurses and staff at Meadow Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Fresenius Kidney Care of San Angelo, West Texas Hospice of San Angelo, Dr Nwokoye and the Shannon Medical Center for their love and care.
