Rickey Don Awbrey, known affectionately as "Pappee" to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the age of 76, joining the Lord in Heaven. Born on February 7, 1949, in Oakland, California, he was the cherished son of Charles and Treva Awbrey.
The Awbrey family moved to Midland, Texas, in 1950, where Rickey spent his formative years. He graduated in the Class of 1967 from Robert E. Lee High School. After high school, Rickey held various jobs, including working for the City of Midland and GE Electric, and proudly served in the U.S. Army.
On February 7, 1970, Rickey married his beloved Susan Armstrong, and together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion. Their daughter, Memory, was born, and the family settled in Midland, where Rickey started his successful tile business in the early 1980s. Known for his incredible work ethic and dedication, Rickey built a career that spanned over four decades before he decided to retire. In January 2023, Rickey and Susan relocated to San Angelo to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren, embracing a new chapter of their lives.
Rickey’s passion for racing was a defining aspect of his life. Even into his 50s and 60s, he could be found racing motorcycles, pushing himself to the limit. He spent several years traveling the country with the racing team "Shake N Bake," where he cherished being part of the crew. Rickey's love for adventure extended beyond racing—he was always ready for the next fishing trip and had a constant drive to stay active with hands-on projects.
Rickey was preceded in death by his father, Charles Awbrey; his mother, Treva Awbrey; his brother, Ronald Awbrey; his brother-in-law, Steve Smith; his nephew, Chris White; and his son-in-law, Richard Flores.
