(Joaquina) Leonor Alonzo Castillo, longtime resident of Mertzon and San Angelo, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the home of her daughter, Sylvia C. Malone. 
She was born July 1, 1928 in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico to Sabino Alonzo and Felipa Garcia. She married Avigilio Rodriguez Castillo on June 8, 1955 in Mason City, Iowa. He preceded her in death September 1, 2005. Mom greatly enjoyed joking, laughing and making her rounds in town to the friends and the homebound. She was employed in various Mertzon cafes and provided in-home care for the elderly over the years until her husband retired. Self-taught to drive, her kids never rode with her! Mom loved to invite her friends to the movies every Sunday possible. She had an infectious smile and for that too her family will miss her. Mom never failed to remember her kids' birthdays, even when we forgot our own. Her sternness and gentleness taught us much. She was a hard worker, endured much, and was ever thankful to God for all she had. 
Mrs. Castillo was also preceded in death by her parents, her beloved grandmother Soledad Tejeda, who raised "Chata" after her father's death, two infant children, and grandchildren Peter Martinez, Sierra Ann Ponsetti, and Tiffany Dawn Ponsetti. 
Leonor is survived by her children and their spouses: Ramon V. Rodriguez of Mexico, Carlos Rodiriguez, Dominga and James Rambo, Avigilio A. Castillo, all of San Angelo, Mario of Mertzon, Susana and Thomas Hubert of Round Rock, Sylvia and Jerry Malone of San Angelo, Sandra and Armando Yzaguirre of Pipe Creek, Diana and Robert Ponsetti of Mertzon, Norma of San Angelo, and Jesus Victor (Jesse) of San Angelo. Also surviving are 34 grandchildren and more than 60 great-grandchildren. 
The family extends thanks to Father Joe Vathalloor, Dr. de Morey and Dr. Hinshaw, the staffs of Angelo Community Hospital, Shannon Medical Center, Medway Home Health, Hospice of San Angelo, and the doctors of Shannon Clinic. 
Rosary will be recited Friday, April 11, 2014, at 7:00 pm, at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at Mertzon Cemetery with Father Joe Vathalloor officiating. Pallbearers will be Dominic Bara, Robert Ponsetti, Jr., Christopher Martinez, Shawn Castillo, Michael Castillo, and Ramon Castillo. Honorary pallbearer is David Hubert.
