Stoneham Glenda Jo

07/30/2014 - 14:55 , by johnb

Glenda Jo Stoneham

"For now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face."

Two weeks shy of her 90th birthday, Glenda Jo Stoneham (Glennie) went to be with the Lord on July 27th, 2014 following a brief illness. Born in Amarillo, Texas, on August 10th, 1924, to John D. and Alma Stoneham, she grew up in a close, loving family. She graduated from Lubbock High School and Mary Hardin Baylor University. Her early work experiences included banking and Executive Assistant positions to pastors in several Baptist churches in Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. In 1965 Glenda began a career with Social Security Administration, from which she retired in 1986. After spending much of her life in Plainview, Texas, she moved to Baptist Memorials Retirement Community in San Angelo in 1990.
Glenda was a devoted daughter, sister and aunt. She provided great comfort and companionship to her mother after her father's death. Her bond with her siblings was strong. She was very attentive to her brother John Donald during his struggle with cancer. She and her sister Doris were best friends who enjoyed spending time and traveling together. Though she never had children of her own, she blessed her five nieces and nephews with her generous love and support as if they were her own. She also had deep connections with life-long friends both in Plainview and San Angelo. She was always an active contributor to her church until her final years.
Practical, unpretentious and fiercely independent are words that describe Glennie. The way she lived her faith without judgment inspired many to seek to deepen their own. Although she lived alone for many years of her life, because of her walk with God, she was never lonely.
Glenda is survived by her brother-in-law Rex Shannon of San Antonio, sister-in-law Mary Ruth Stoneham Bond of Lake Kiowa, Texas; nieces Susan Shannon Knighten of San Antonio, Shirley Miller of Springfield, Virginia, and Donna Stoneham of Pt. Richmond, California; nephews Kelly Shannon of Denver, Colorado, and Ron Stoneham of Manhattan, New York; great nephews Ben Knighten, Jeff Knighten and Luke Stoneham-Yoshino, and great-niece Sophia Stoneham-Yoshino; and great-great nephew Grayson Knighten.
A celebration of Glennie's life will be held at Baptist Memorials Chapel at 902 N. Main in San Angelo, TX at 10:00 AM on Monday, August 4th. The family would like to express deep appreciation to Lorraine Nance and Bonnie Chappell for their friendship, care and support; to Linda Bratcher and the Baptist Memorials staff; and to the nurses' aides and nurses at Shannon Hospital for their compassionate care during the final days of Glennie's life. In lieu of flowers, tributes may be made to Baptist Memorials Retirement Center, San Angelo, Texas.
