10/19/2022 - 08:53 , by TKing09

Oscar Guerra Flores, 83, of San Angelo Texas passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Church services will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. with military honors. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Harper Funeral Home.

Oscar was born in San Angelo, Texas on February 9, 1939, to Elpidio and Hortencia Guerra Flores. He is survived by his only child, “the apple of his eye”, Mona Lisa Atkins; his sister Olga Alcala; grandchildren: Christopher Cruz, Jill & husband Rudy Reyes, Jennifer & husband Keith Drusen, and twins Hunter and Brooke Atkins. He was a blessing to four great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews who all admired and respected their “Uncle Oscar”.

Oscar was blessed to have many friends in his lifetime to include close friends, Ernest Guevara, Eddie Alderete, and Jr. Govea. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Elpidio and Hortencia Flores, brother Tony "Charro" Flores, sisters Yolanda Spears and Olivia Luera.

Oscar was a military veteran and proudly served in the U. S. Army. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He was waiting for Sunday's game when he passed on Saturday which is probably why the Cowboys lost and San Angelo received thunder and rain. He was always joking with those around him and never took life too seriously. Always there to help anyone.

Oscar was dedicated to serving God and family. He attended church on Saturday evenings. He would tell Mona to schedule family gatherings around church hours. Oscar had a very special bond with his daughter, Mona. Her special memory as a child was when they would always go fishing.

John F. Jordan

10/18/2022 - 09:01 , by TKing09

John Frederick Jordan was born August 22, 1938, in Laredo, Texas, the first of Sam and Helen Jordan’s seven children.

Growing up helping his father with the family ranch during the hard drought times of the 1950’s, he developed an ethic of hard work and developed the dream of having a ranch of his own.

He attended St. Joseph’s Academy and excelled in academics and sports. He participated in livestock shows with the iconic ‘white face’ Hereford steers. His winnings became the beginnings of his college fund. In 1956, he sold his horse and saddle, added to the college fund, began his studies at Texas Tech, and earned a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduating he served in the Army National Guard and saw active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He was employed by the Watkins Bridge Company and began his life’s work of constructing bridges and overpasses for Texas highways, many of them on US I-10 from Seguin, to Fort Stockton. Development of new roads in the San Angelo area precipitated the family’s move there in 1970. Dozens of projects under his supervision were constructed and stand today as concrete memorials to his work including the Robert A. Junell Overpass at Houston Harte Expressway and US 87, and the Neff Park Celebration Bridge across the Concho River.

John married Ruth and joined a family with four children becoming “Daddy” to Bo, Suzi, Jolie and Polly.

After the retirement of Watkins, JAScon Construction Company was created with partners, James Averill and CV Sheffield. It flourished and provided the means to fulfill his boyhood dream of having his own ranch. So, in 1982 he purchased “The Ranch” in Menard County near the tiny town of Hext. John enjoyed a becoming a respected member of the ranching community. Raising cattle, sheep and Angora goats, he took pride in improving his land by prescribed burning and exterminating the invasive cactus and Mesquite. He passed on his experience and knowledge and love for ranching and hunting to his son, daughters and grandchildren.

Dan Wayne Strickland

10/17/2022 - 08:47 , by TKing09

It is with great sadness, that the family of Dan Wayne Strickland, announces his passing from this earth to his heavenly place. He passed in the early morning hours of October 14, 2022. Dan was born in Tacoma, Washington, to his parents, Jerry and Nancy Strickland. Dan surrendered his life to Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1976 and was baptized in San Antonio. Dan graduated from San Angelo Lakeview High School in 1982 where he played Varsity basketball. He attended Angelo State University where he studied mathematics, finance, and computer science. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Dan’s professional career was wholly encompassed by working as a computer programmer. His first job, for which he was employed for six years, was with Raytheon Technologies Corporation, an aerospace and defense company. During Desert Storm, Dan was one of the employees contracted on the PAVE PAWS project, by the United States Government. Even though his job duties and the information he gleaned were classified, Dan’s computer programming skills were invaluable. Dan was extremely proud to be of service to our Country during war time, as the PAVE PAWS radar site, is a United States Air Force Station which detected missile threats. Though he was a civilian, his service aided our American servicemen and citizens. He then went on to work for Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries for twenty-two years programming vital Creel Data and other programs. During his time with Inland Fisheries, Dan completed advanced computer courses in SAS Computer Programming and became state certified as a SAS Platform Administrator, being only one of four individuals in the state of Texas with this certification at the time. His SAS programs gained state, national, and international attention as he was a State Agency SAS Representative Speaker across the nation introducing the vital statistical data programs of this particular system. This computer system fascinated Dan because of its statistical and fiscally advanced data information that aided both state and national government agencies, as well as, major companies and corporations. His programs are now used by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the State Attorney General’s Office, the Texas Comptroller’s Office, and the Texas Education Agency. He finished his career at the Texas Education Agency in Austin, Texas.

In 2003, Dan was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer, and received treatment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. During his 19-year battle with cancer, he underwent a stem cell transplant and an aggressive chemotherapeutic treatment – with his last chemotherapy round being three years ago. Though never in remission, his cancer remained stable for the past three years. When diagnosed in 2003, Dan was told by his physician that the statistic of a patient under the age of forty with multiple myeloma was one in a million. His response to that was, “Well, you know, I always did think I was special!” This is the positive attitude that Dan possessed then and all throughout the 19 years of such painstaking physical distress on his body from the chemo, the stem cell transplant, the peritoneal dialysis, the hemodialysis, and his most recent diagnosis of ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The ALS, which Dan was diagnosed with a few days prior to his passing, caused him to lose over 100 pounds in the past year, caused fluid retention in his lungs, respiratory failure, and several other debilitating ailments. When people commented about his positive attitude throughout all these medical challenges, Dan used that opportunity to share the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. He continued his quest to share Christ to people even up to the last few hours of his life on earth. He was primarily only surrounded by medical staff since he had been hospitalized off and on from July to October, but he shared Jesus with each of them. At his direction, as the head of our household, Dan asked Lauren and I to join him in using M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, as our Mission field, specifically when he was first diagnosed with Cancer. Dan taught Lauren, when she was only six years old, to pray over Christian pamphlets and place them on M.D. Anderson’s lobby tables. Dan made the conscious effort to always speak to people while waiting in the lobby and praying for an opportunity to share the hope and salvation that only Jesus can provide. Dan was a Godly man, husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His testimony and witness will continue to live here on earth though his body is in Heaven. Additionally, Dan enjoyed a wide array of hobbies throughout his lifetime which included: fishing, rattlesnake hunting, renovating properties, learning new languages, playing poker, deconstructing, and reconstructing computers, and collecting antiques – specifically, searching for the gem in the rough with both his wife and daughter. Dan married the love of his life of 34 years, Maria Senatore Strickland. Their marriage was greatly blessed by the birth of their beautiful daughter, Lauren Mirelle Strickland.

Dan is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Maria Senatore Strickland; his daughter, Lauren Mirelle Strickland; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Strickland; his sister, Susan Strickland; his brother, Lee Strickland; his Mother-in-Law, Mrs. Maria N. Senatore; and several dear aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is also survived by several members of his wife’s family which he dearly loved. He has many cherished friends too numerous to name and considered himself blessed to have had so many faithful

Prayer Warriors.

Services are pending at this time.

Benny Ray Stuard

10/17/2022 - 08:40 , by TKing09

Benny Ray Stuard, 91, of San Angelo passed away Thursday, October 13,2022.

Mr. Stuard was born March 12, 1931 in Tom Green County at home on the family farm to Mannie Ray Stuard and Ada B. Churchwell. He attended schools in San Angelo, graduating from San Angelo High School in 1948. He entered the Air Force boot camp right after high school and soon after returning married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Marye Ellen Watkins, in 1950. They then set off for a military adventure that took them to Mississippi, Alabama and finally Alaska where he worked as a morse code intelligence operator serving 4 years. They had two boys while in Alaska. After returning home they settled east of San Angelo on a twenty acre farm on the Concho river to raise their two children. Benny owned and operated Stuard Welding and Crane Company since returning home in 1955. In November 1964 they welcomed a beautiful baby girl to the family, she was the sparkle of his eye! Benny worked at his business that he took over from his father until his retirement at age 65 where he then took up golf. He passed the business down to his son and partner Kenneth, whom had worked for him since graduating high school. Kenneth has since retired and the business was sold last year after being in the family for generations.

They were members of the Hoolihan Acres for 20 years, Cotton Patch Shuffle, Western Ten Hoedown, and Terpsichorean Club. Benny loved playing golf with his Bentwood Country Club buddies and even following them around telling them what they were doing wrong when he was too weak to play anymore. And he loved to play dominoes with anyone if they thought they could beat him! Benny was very humble and kind to strangers and always ready to lend a helping hand. On June 2nd, 1984 he saved two teenagers from an overturned car in a pond on Parkview from drowning with no hesitation. And even hooking up the wench for the tow truck driver to pull out the car because the driver wasn’t sure how. And he would do it all over again if need be! He was called a “Good Samaritan” in the local news paper and was a local “Hero” at the Dun-Bar restaurant where he went for morning coffee, but he shook off the attention and just said” he was glad God put him there to help”. But I know he is MY hero!!
