Harlan Ronnie Welch

11/07/2016 - 19:51 , by johnb

Harlan "Ronnie" Welch passed away on November 6, 2016 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.

Ronnie was born in Temple, Texas to Tully and Eunice Welch on July 28, 1942. He graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1961 and joined the Marine Corps soon after, serving in Japan and Korea before earning an honorable discharge shortly before the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following that he returned to San Angelo and joined the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, serving 20 years in fisheries management before moving to MHMR until retirement.

Ronnie is survived by his mother Eunice Welch, his son Tim Welch and grandsons Ethan and Trent Welch of San Angelo, his sister Karen Tims and Joe Alford of San Angelo, niece Tammy Gully of San Angelo and great nephews Layton and Ryan Gully,, nephew Kevin Tims and Rachel Tims of Celina, great niece and nephew Samantha Tims, and Austin Tims of Celina.

Ronnie was an avid fisherman and liked nothing better than to “set out lines” with his friends and grandsons. He enjoyed having fish fries, cooking brisket, and frying turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas. If it involved family and his many friends Ronnie was ready to go. If it involved the grandchildren, nephews, and niece he was the first one there.

Ronnie had numerous friends including Bill and Ann Follis, Gene and Iris Warren, James and Caroline Williams, and Roger Hagood, lifelong friend and fellow Marine to name a few. He missed working with his MHMR family but maintained contact with them after retirement. Ronnie busied himself with home improvement projects, trying to spoil his grandkids, and looking after his mother.

The Graveside Service will be 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Harper Funeral Home.

Mark was a very devoted Christian husband, father, brother, friend, pilot and teacher. He was born in Lubbock, Texas, Sept. 18, 1954, to Elizabeth (Betty) and Robert (Bob) Brown. He enjoyed going back in August to find places where he was born, lived as an infant and managed a drive-in movie theater after college graduation.

Mark was a member of the San Angelo First Assembly of God Church on Edmund Boulevard. He taught JAMS classes (Jesus and me) to children ages four to six years old for many years. He was thrilled when the children accepted Jesus as their savior. It also excited him when the children got older and gave him hugs and told him what was going on in their lives.

Continuing education was Marks passion. He was a Central High School graduate class of 1973. Where he was one day short of 12 years perfect attendance. He was also Angelo State University BBA graduate 1977 and a BBA Finance in 1979. He enjoyed college life as a Delta Sig Fraternity member. His passion was teaching and later in his life he taught TABC (Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission) training courses, First Aid/CPR courses, and CHL (Concealed Handgun Classes) in our Practical Training School on Howard Street. He saved many lives and wanted to be a positive person for our community.

As a person with a generous heart to his fellow man and to the San Angelo Community he was honored to have more than 15 years of perfect attendance with the San Angelo Westside Rotary Club, where he worked to become president. He later volunteered as a Lion and was a charter member of the Concho Valley Law Enforcement Lions Club in 2011 and also the Eastside Lions Club. He served as District 2-A1 Alert Chairman for several years. Mark and his wife were honored with a Lions International Presidential Award in 2012 in the district winter conference. He served on the Eastside Lions Club board until his passing.

A devoted family man, Mark is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, whom he called his “bride”, Carole Anne Cavallero-Brown; precious step-children, Said Lee Pierce-Brown, that he raised from a year old, the light of his world, of Manassas, Virginia, Heidi Lucia Sadie Garza-Bunkua and husband Tom; and their two sons Kenneth and Kyle of Stone Ridge, Virginia, Michele Rene Garza- Burgman and husband Isaac and their daughter Gabriella and son Isaiah of Stone Ridge, Virginia, Victoria Lee Garza-Hobgood and husband Ben and their two sons Nicholas and Ryan of Sterling, Virginia and Robert Molina and wife Juliette of Dallas.
