Cox Maxine Monett

10/14/2019 - 16:33 , by zoey@hydeinter…

Maxine Monett Acton Cox, 91, of San Angelo went to be with her Lord on Oct. 10, 2019.

Maxine was born on Sept. 6, 1928 in Eola, TX to Maynard William “Dutch” Acton and Celia Steadman Acton. She was raised in Eola with her parents and sister Helen until the 4th grade when they moved to Alpine. Maxine attended and graduated from Alpine schools. She loved cowgirling alongside her Daddy and sister at the Meriweather and Tippet Ranches.

Maxine married William Geral “Buck” Cox on Sept. 10, 1947 after their love grew as they wrote to one another while Buck served in Japan during WWII. Eventually they moved to the Nancy Anne Ranch in Valentine where they joyfully raised their four children: Janice, Geral, Billy, and Ruth. While being a mama and helping Buck at the ranch, she was able to attend Sul Ross University and earn her teaching certificate. She then went on to teach elementary school and Home Economics in Valentine for 14 years.

Although Maxine enjoyed teaching, she loved being a homemaker and caring for her family and home most of all. She poured her heart into making sure everyone felt her love when they entered her doors. In addition, she was always prepared to make a big hearty meal to take out to the cowboys and spoil them with her delicious home baked treats.

When Buck and Maxine retired, they bought their own ranch in San Angelo where she was able to plant her roots – reading, gardening, sewing, baking, and cooking for her family and friends. She loved her family deeply and she loved her Lord.

Maxine is survived by her children, Geral (Fran) Cox and Ruth (Fred) Stumberg; her grandchildren Janet (Ken) Phinney, Allen (Michelle) Cox, Shannon (Billy) Massie, Justin (Lauren) Stumberg; her great grandchildren Kasey, David, Cody, Austin, Ace, Laura, Kamryn, Lane, Dylan, and Dutch; her great greatgrandson Noah; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Maxine was proceeded in death by her husband WG Buck Cox, her daughter Janice, her son Billy; her parents Dutch and Celia Acton; and her sister and brother-in-law Helen and Les Bell.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Maxine may be made to Bloys Campmeeting Association, Fort Davis, TX.

Moore I John Edward

10/14/2019 - 16:21 , by zoey@hydeinter…

John Edward Moore I, age 80, passed quietly at home in the presence of his family on October 11, 2019.

He was born in Bangor, Maine, where he spent most of his early years through high school prior to joining the US Navy. Some of his happiest childhood memories came from his first twelve summers spent on Gott’s Island, Maine.

Before John left the Navy with an honorable discharge, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Sue Libby, about whom his mother was later heard to say, “was the best day’s work he ever did”.

While working as a radio announcer for the WRDO Radio Station in Augusta, Maine, John was part of the moving force that helped develop and present the first “Battle of The Bands” in the City Auditorium to raise funds to bring the first American Field Service (AFS) Student, Marie Barbey, from Nyon, Switzerland, to Cony High School in Augusta, Maine for a school year in the 1960’s.

In 1971, John was chosen to help bring the concept of “fast food”, known as “Great Golden Chicken”, by the House of Hay out of New Brunswick, to the Grimbsy-Cleethorpes area of England. It was an exciting prospect until the local banks determined they wanted to support only an Englishman in management’s place, and John just didn’t do as well at imitating the accent as did his 7-year old daughter!

By the mid-70’s, John determined it was time to go after that college degree. In 2-and-1/2 years, he completed his Business Degree Suma cu Laude, while working 2-3 part time jobs and still finding time to be husband and dad. He was dad not only to his own pre-teen plus two teens, but by then the family had added two foreign students for one school year, (one from Acapulco, Mexico, the other from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. One summer, a boy from Mexico City Mexico, was a guest.) These guests helped wet the family’s appetite for bring more into the fold as opportunities arose, creating additional lifetime friendships.

Following that, John received the first of his Civilian Employee for the Air Force assignments as a Billeting Manager at Loring Air Force Base, Maine, where he spent 7 years prior to being transferred to Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Az. Next came Hanscom AFB, MA, followed by Chanute AFB., in Rantoul, IL. Then came an upgrade to Housing Manager at Wright-Patterson AFB, in Dayton, Ohio. John felt he had finally found a home when he was assigned to Goodfellow, AFB., in San Angelo, Texas. He, as many before him, declared, “I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could”.

A few years into that work, an early retirement became available. By taking advantage of that, John was able to put into practice by teaching what he had been doing all along. He was hired to teach classes in Seoul, South Korea, Pforzheim, Randolph, and Kaiserslautern, Germany, and Jacksonville, Florida. Only once did he teach a class in Hilo, Hawaii. Suppose it had anything to do with the fact that this was one time his wife, Marilyn Sue went with him, and she found Hilo Hattie’s too much of a temptation for those matching shirts!

John was born to Newman Lee Moore and Marion Leckemby Moore in Bangor, Maine, on June 24, 1939, each of whom predeceased him.

He is survived by his spouse of 61 years, Marilyn Sue Libby Moore, and their three children, Bethany Sue Zimmerman of San Angelo, Tx., John Edward Moore II and wife, Sue of Hollis, OK, and Kimberly Denise Middleton of Stephenville, Tx.

Grandchildren are Dirk Zimmerman and wife, Rose of Killeen, Tx, Erica Renee Roth of Taft, Ok, Catlin Sue Atwood of Hollis, OK, Josiah Norlin Zimmerman and wife Melody of Tulsa, OK, Alyssa Sue Pugh and husband, Matthew of Lubbock, Tx, John Edward Moore III and wife Reagan of Amarillo, Tx , Emily Shae Garza and husband, Whalen of Lubbock, Tx and Ian Arthur Middleton of Lubbock, Tx.

Great-grandchildren are Drake Watson, Abbie Zimmerman, Mallory Roth and Esther Zimmerman.

Siblings: Helen Lee Moore of Colorado Springs, CO, Mary Elizabeth Clark and husband, Dwight of Panama City, Fl., Betty Jean Lamoreau and husband, Mike of Manchester, ME and a brother, James Michael Moore of Bernard, ME, (deceased).

Family by choice: Camille Flanagan and Scott Manamon.

A Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00PM, Monday, October 14, 2019 at Harper Funeral Home. A Celebration of his life will be 1:00PM, Tuesday, October 15th at Southgate Church of Christ with Pastor Don McKee officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome memorial gifts in honor of John to Westview Boys Home, 120 West Broadway, Hollis, OK 73550 or Southgate Church of Christ World Missions, 528 Country Club Road, San Angelo, Texas 76904

Bell Mavis Clarkson

10/14/2019 - 16:17 , by zoey@hydeinter…

Mavis Clarkson Bell, 78, died on Sunday, October 6, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 3 S. Randolph Street, with inurnment to follow in the church courtyard columbarium. Fr Matt Rowe will officiate. Arrangements are by Harper Funeral Home. She requests bright and colorful flowers.
Mavis was born October 1, 1941 in Heswall, Wirral, England, to her parents George and Nell Clarkson. The middle child of three, Mavis grew up in Heswall and loved her home because there were so many places to play and explore. As a young girl she loved wearing her hair in braids and enjoyed going to the movies and reading. She began her education at St. Peter’s Church of England Elementary School and then went on to Pensby School for Girls. West Kirby Children's Nursing Home was her first place to learn nursing where she won the Matron's prize for best nurse of the year. Then she went on to train at the Royal Salop Infirmary, and continued to work there after graduating from the Royal College of Nursing in 1965. In August 1966, along with a fellow nurse, she decided to move to San Angelo, Texas to nurse at Shannon. She chose San Angelo because it had qualities similar to her home – a farming community with a river running through it. The moderate temperatures also made the community attractive to her. Mavis quickly became at home in San Angelo and made many new friends she would cherish for life. In 1980 she met the love of her life, Ron Bell. They were married in August of 1981 and they shared 33 beautiful years together. She loved her life and was fortunate to have family in England, Canada, and San Angelo.

For Mavis nursing was not just a profession or career, it was her calling. Every day she was faithful to the Nightingale Pledge: she loyally endeavored to aid the physicians in their work and devoted herself to the welfare of those committed to her care. Her life of service as a Registered Nurse touched many, many patients and their families and also her colleagues - other nurses, support staff, and physicians. Mavis felt it was important to maintain and elevate nursing standards, and she was involved in the Texas Association of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (TAPAN) where she served as past president of District 9, and various other state and national nursing associations. During Shannon’s 75th Anniversary celebration Mavis is quoted as saying “The friendly people made her feel at home” and that “Medicine in England was practiced the same as in San Angelo, only the hospitals were arranged differently.” She is also quoted as saying that Shannon “was ahead of its time by offering private rooms” and that she was “very proud to have worked for Shannon.” Mavis retired from Shannon Medical Center on January 31, 2007 after more than 35 years of dedicated service as an RN-C,CPAN.

In 1973, Mavis was a founding member of the Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) San Angelo, TX Chapter. The DBE is a non-profit society promoting friendship and fun with other women while raising funds for worthwhile charities, including the assisted living home, Mountbatten House in Houston, TX.

Mavis and her husband, Ron, were avid supporters of Angelo State University. They were Century Club members and attended most of the sporting events. They have established Scholarships at ASU for Nursing and ROTC.

Mavis cared deeply about the hungry in San Angelo, she served as the Board Secretary for Project Dignidad, an ecumenical ministry that provides food in emergency situations to individuals and families.
She loved the Lord and she was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, having served on the Altar Guild and the Vestry, and as a delegate to the Diocesan Convention.

Growing up so close to Liverpool, England, it is only natural that Mavis was a fan of The Beatles. Her favorite songs included “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “Twist and Shout”. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband Ron.

She is survived by her brother George Clarkson and wife Valerie, of Wrexham, North Wales; her sister Pat (Clarkson) Sweeney and her husband, Jim, of Nanaimo, British Columbia and nephews Michael Sweeney, of Alberta, Canada and Andrew Sweeney and his wife, Lisa, of Vancouver, British Columbia; her niece Susan Clarkson and partner Paul, of Ruthin, North Wales; and her nephew, David Clarkson and his wife Jo, of Mold, North Wales. Mavis is also survived by numerous other great nieces and nephews, other family members and close friends.

Special thanks go to all her wonderful caregivers from Comfort Keepers, especially Ashley Tristan, Maria Guadarrama, Dora Terrazas, and Virginia Torres.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mavis loved poetry and was always ready with an appropriate quote. Here is one more:
"The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention." ~ Oscar Wilde
