Samuels Velda Cunningham

Velda Cunningham Samuels was born February 16,1929 in a rural area outside of Gustine, TX to Earl Clements and Viva Ovetta Cunningham and passed peacefully to be with her Lord and Saviour on February 22, 2020 at the age of 91. She graduated from Eola High in Eola, TX where she played volleyball and won the 1945-46 State Volleyball Championship, played on a Womens softball team in Ozona, TX and survived the 1954 Ozona Flood with her two sons and one daughter. For many years she was an avid Bowler in San Angelo, TX and attended the Women's State Bowling Championship Tournament with her two daughters. She was proud to be a Cunningham Descendant and part of the longest Family Reunion in the state of Texas. She belonged to the Rebekahs, a branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and is a member of the Sierra Vista Methodist Church in San Angelo, TX. She worked as a secretary at the General Telco Federal Credit Union, Holsum Bakery, and Farmers Insurance in San Angelo, TX. She served as Treasurer of Lake View Christian Church and taught KK Bible Class 4-6.

She is preceded in death by her parents Earl and Viva Cunningham, sister Neva Jo Story, Nephew David Lee Story and son-in-law by marriage Rowe Wallace.

She is survived by George A Samuels whom she married on July 21, 2001. Sisters, Leona and husband Raleigh Hudzietz of San Angelo, TX and Earlene Mayfield of Ozona, TX. Children Danny and wife Iris Smith of San Angelo, TX, Stanley and wife Carol Smith of Midland, TX, Phyllis and husband Craig Mathis of Mexia, TX and Elaine and husband Dennis Jones of San Angelo, TX. Children by marriage, Sandra and husband Ed McClintock of Cleveland, TN, Kay Samuels of San Angelo, TX, Bobby and wife Joy Samuels of Midland, TX.

She was known to her nieces and nephews, Charlotte Jo Miller, Bobby Mayfield, Richard Mayfield, Sandra Mayfield, Jim Armentrout and Debbie Armentrout Harbin as “Aunt Deene”. Grandchildren, Brian Smith, Chrystal Pond, JT Shults, Jacob Bailey, Joanie Mathis, Lori Mathis, Shae Jones, Stacy Jones, Ethan Samuels, Braden Samuels, Shane Wallace, Doug Wallace and Tasha Wallace. Great Grandchildren, Emerson Smith, Hudson Smith, Malory Pond, Sydney Pond, Macy Perales, Chance Perales, Mylie Perales, Harrison Frost, MaryAnn Jones, Stacy Jones, Thomas Jones, Shelby Jones, Tyler Wallace and Brayden Wallace.

The Gathering will be Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Johnson’s Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Sierra Vista Methodist Church, 4522 College Hills Blvd, San Angelo, TX.

Special recognition and gratitude are given to Kindred Hospice of San Angelo and the caregivers who cared for our Wife and Mother. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Sierra Vista Methodist Church Youth Ministry or Kindred Hospice of San Angelo, TX.

Wescott Corrine Dorries

Devoted mother and grandmother Corrine Dorries Wescott passed peacefully on February 21, surrounded by family in her home in Mertzon, Texas. Born to Robert Angus Dorries and Irene Laird Dorries on March 12, 1928 in Matagorda, Texas Corrine spent her youth in Campwood, Sandsprings and Port Lavaca, Texas.

The eldest daughter of five siblings Corrine was a brave big sister who learned at an early age the value of family. She was a natural caregiver who often took care of her younger siblings. Corrine moved to Big Spring, Texas at the age of 15 where she lived and worked independently. She later met her husband Hall Wescott in Odessa, Texas where they spent many happy years together raising their family.

To her family, Corrine was a strong, loyal, loving support, always willing to lend a helping hand and share a little advice. She loved her home where she spent many hours gardening and “working in her yard” which no doubt contributed to her strength and longevity.

Brave, strong, and fiercely independent, Corrine was always “able to stand on her own two feet” and encouraged that trait in others. She was honest, hard working and a positive influence and role model to many. Her door was always open and she was always happy to take a call or welcome a visitor with a cup of coffee or a meal.

Corrine is preceded in death by her husband, Hall Wescott, brother Charlie Dorries, sisters Ginny “Sue" Morton, Edell Dresch, and Betty Jones.

Corrine is survived by her children, son Mike Wescott and wife Sheryl, son Patrick Wescott and wife Neta, and daughter Nikki Wescott Wilson and husband Bill. Six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Johnson's Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 11 am at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Jude's Children's Hospital, The 700 Club, or Shriner's Memorial Hospital.

Shirley Peiser Boatright danced her way into heaven on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. Shirley was born to Bonnie Dell and C.H. Peiser in Veribest, Texas, April 2, 1936.

How do you pay tribute to someone's life in a two by five inch space? Some people speak of their accomplishments and she had many, including working her way up to Vice President of San Angelo Savings and Loan. Others talk about who is left behind. Again, there are many, including her siblings in San Angelo, Billy (Beverly) Peiser, Bobby (Karen) Peiser and her sister in Marble Falls, Sandra Woerner. Her beloved brother, Cliff, passed before her. She is also survived by her children Bric (Brenda) Boatright of San Angelo and Amby (Jeff) Rice of Nashville; her five grandchildren, Bonnie Johnson and Brooke (Jarod) Newlin of San Angelo; Bronson Boatright of San Antonio; and Taylor and Jack Rice of Austin. Shirley was privileged to have been an integral part of the lives of her great grand children, Boston, Baylor, Briella and Blessyn Johnson. She was also graced by the lives of many beloved nieces and nephews.

Many discuss their brave battle with illnesses. She battled like no other and endured more pain than anyone should have to in one lifetime. The thing that sticks out the most is that she was everything to our family. Shirley was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife (a couple of times), an aunt, a grandmother, a great grandmother, and a friend to so many. She was stubborn to a fault ignoring most of her doctors’ "suggestions." She was meticulously organized and extremely hard working and dependable. She loved clouds and hated days when there weren't any. She was very interested in the weather and would frequently yell at the weatherman and say that he must not be from Texas. She viewed the world through a lens that most of us didn't understand. She was unique. She was a self-proclaimed "unicorn." She valued beauty in her surroundings and created a lovely home for us to enjoy as we so often did on Sundays when she would cook dinner for all of us. She would put on her lipstick before making her morning coffee just in case someone stopped by. She was fierce and strong. Did we say she was stubborn? That's worth mentioning twice! To say that we will miss her doesn't really convey the void that she will leave behind. She was a force of nature and she will be dearly missed.

A special thank you to Shirley's granddaughter, Brooke Newlin. We don't know what we would have done without Brooke's help and support over the last few years. Also, to St. Gabriel's Hospice, one of the best, and a sincere thank you to all the nurses who cared for Shirley in such a kind way. We would also like to say a special thanks to Adrianna, Daisy, Yolanda, Peggy, and Andrea who cared for mother over the last year. We were blessed to have found such angels.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, February 21, 2020 at 11:00 a.m.

Ofelia Perez Bastardo, 84, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Public viewing will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the Rosary being prayed at 6:00 PM Thursday, February 20, 2020, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM Friday, February 21, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Juan Lopez Cortes, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bastardo was born May 23, 1935, in Bastrop to Jesus and Pomposa Perez. She married Arturo Bastardo February of 1969 in Mexico. He preceded her in death on August 18, 2011. Ofelia has been a lifelong resident of San Angelo. She worked Angelo Community Hospital as an instrument tech for 50 plus years retiring in 2015. Ofelia also worked for as a custodian for Paul Horne for over 30 years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Elfia Sanchez of Waco, Tommie Jean Garcia of San Angelo, Diamond Diaz of San Angelo, and Elfia Hamilton of Sweetwater; 5 sons, Joe Perez of San Angelo, Johnny Perez of San Angelo, Jerry Montelongo of San Angelo, Edward Montelongo of San Angelo, and Raymond Bastardo of San Angelo; a sister, Erma Martinez of San Angelo; Three brothers, Jesus Perez of Midland, Felix Perez of Austin, and Andres Perez of Ft. Collins, Colorado; 25 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great children. Ofelia was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Elizabeth Montelongo; two brothers, James Perez, and Erasmo Perez.

Carson Johnny Richard

Johnny was born in Lubbock on April 2, 1960, to his parents Eugene and Dorothy Walker Carson. He worked as a truck driver until his health declined. Johnny was a character! He could bring a smile to anyone’s face and loved to laugh. He enjoyed engaging with people, especially his family. He was also a great chef and loved preparing food for family and friends alike.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Carson; and four brothers, Lawrence E. Douglas, Charles L. Coleman, Jimmy Ephrim and Ricky Lee Carson.

Johnny is survived by his wife Carol, who he married in 2012; his mother, Dorothy Walker; his daughters, Melisa Carson and Lovely Baity; four grandchildren, Kyri McPhail, Tatianna Carson, Jay Baity and Kaceon Carson; his three sisters, Sarah Brightmon of Los Angeles, Carolyne Bien-Aime of San Angelo and Lena Carson also of San Angelo; his five brothers, Leon Coleman and his wife Evelyn of Amarillo, Edward Coleman of Lubbock, Larry Carson and his wife Tina of Amarillo, Benny Carson and James Carson both of San Angelo; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Jordan Wesley

Wesley Thomas Jordan, surrounded by family, went to be with the Lord on the evening of February 18, 2020. Wesley was born November 3, 1926, in Corsicana, Texas, the third of six children, to Edgar and Bertha Jordan. Wesley was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Jordan, and Bertha Ellen (Ford) Jordan, as well as his siblings, Luella (Jordan) Howard (B.G. Howard), Roy Edgar Jordan (Genny Jordan), Betty (Jordan) Odom (Raymond Odom), William (Bill) Jordan, Albert Jordan. He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law Janice (Berry) Palmeri (Donald Palmeri), of Corsicana, Texas.

Wesley was a true patriot, electing to go to war during World War II, at the young age of 17, so young that his parents had to give permission for him to enlist. He proudly served his time in the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet from 1944 thru 1946, attached to the Transport Division Fifty Three of the Third Amphibious Force U.S. Pacific Fleet, a part of the Task force 33, Tokyo Occupation Force, discharged as a Lieutenant. This was such a far distance to go for someone from Corsicana, Texas. He served in the Naval reserve from July 1946, until he was recalled for active duty in the Korean War, from March 17, 1952 until February 16, 1953, when he was recalled as Boilerman Second Class.

After WWII, he continued his education, attending college and playing football for the Navarro Junior College Bulldogs in 1946, 1947, and 1948, graduating in 1948 in the group of graduates from Navarro College, Corsicana, Texas, called the “Barrick’s Bunch”. He married his College sweetheart, Peggy Berry on June 1, 1951. As a married man, and carpenter, Wesley realized that during times of bad weather, there was no work. With an interest in drawing and construction, Wesley entered the Architecture program at Texas Technical College (now known as Texas Tech University), graduating in 1955, thus making the family a Texas Tech Family. Being, a Carpenter, military veteran, devout Baptist, family man, and a member of the Mason’s Yellowhouse Lodge #841, Lubbock. The Jordan Family was selected as the Family of the year, for Lubbock, Texas in 1961.

On January 7, 1959 the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners Authorized Wesley Jordan, to Employ in the State of Texas with the Title of Architect. With such, he designed multiple buildings in Lubbock, and in San Angelo, Texas. Later in his career, Wesley was able to apply his keen eye for detail, and ability to replicate and modify designs as needed which he applied to his trade even after retirement, as he continued to work on projects throughout the San Angelo area. He enjoyed building projects, traveling to such exotic places as China and Australia, spending time with family, and tending to duties on his sons ranch, Jordan Acres, throughout his last years of life. Wesley’s commitment to education, was engrained in each of his three children, who each graduated from Angelo State University.

Wesley and Peggy held their church membership at First Baptist Church, San Angelo, Texas, being members from the time that the family moved from Lubbock, Texas in the mid 1960’s. Wesley is survived by his wife of 68 years, Peggy (Berry) Jordan, his children and their families, his son Berry L. Jordan, Ph.D. (Nancy) of Snyder, Texas, Tracy Clarke (Tom) San Angelo, Texas, and Kelly Jordan (Lorie) of Flower Mound, Texas. As well as two grandsons, Jack Clarke of San Angelo, and Terry Clarke of Austin, Texas, and two of his sister-in-laws, Belinda Jordan of Belton, Texas, and Wretha Jordan, of Tyler, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2020 at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Celebration of Wesley’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2020 in the Chapel of Johnson’s Funeral Home with interment to follow in Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of Flowers, please make a donation in the family name to “Meals for the Elderly”, San Angelo, Texas, https://www.mealsfortheelderly.org/ , an organization that both Wesley, and his wife Peggy served as volunteers for this civic cause, and essential service by providing meal delivery and assistance to many of San Angelo’s elderly. The family would like to thank Interim Hospice, and San Angelo Nursing and Rehab, who provided care during his last days. Archie Wesley Smith Jr., age 71, of San Angelo, TX, passed away on Monday, February 17th, 2020. He was born in San Angelo on March 21st, 1948 to Archie and IV Smith. Wesley graduated from Central High School in 1967. He married Penney Parker on December 24th, 1976 and together they had one daughter, Jennifer. They divorced in 1991. Wesley worked as a truck driver for a number of years and also worked as a security officer in later years. Wes was passionate about jewelry making, wood working, crafting and camping.

He is preceded in death by his brother Allen Smith and his step-mother Lillian Smith. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Chandler and her husband Joseph, along with their children Erin Chandler, Addison Chandler, Quinn Chandler, and Emalin Chandler, all of Forney, TX. He is also survived by his siblings, Vada Stewart of San Angelo, TX and Gary Smith of Odessa, TX. Wes was dearly loved and will be missed greatly.

A memorial service will be held at Johnson’s Funeral Home at 2 PM on Friday, February 28th, 2020.

Thompson Jo Reta

Jo Reta Van Winkle Thompson went to be with her Lord and Savior February 17, 2020 at the age of 92 and is celebrating in heaven with loved ones with a clear memory. She was born February 27, 1927 to parents Vernie Franklin and Lela Cleo Van Winkle in Gustin, Texas. She was one of eight children of a rural farming family. After high school she moved to Brownwood to attend Brownwood Business School, while a student she worked as a waitress and that is when she met the love of her life Norman Lee Thompson, they married July 3, 1948. She later worked at Southwestern State Telephone until they moved to San Angelo in 1953 and started a family. Together they started Norman Thompson Air Conditioning and Heating in 1963 where she answered the phones and kept the books. They retired in 1985 to enjoy traveling with family and friends, working the farm they had built and loving their grandchildren who lovingly called her Nanny. She was a founding member of the East Concho Volunteer Fire Department, supporting the department helping with fundraising and bringing food and water to fire scenes. Jo Reta was a member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church. She had a deep faith in the Lord and attended Sunday school and services weekly until she was unable. Even then her bible was always at her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Norman, granddaughter Christy Ann Thompson and siblings, R.V., Freda, Skeet, Buck, Laverne and Letha. She is survived by her two children, Norma Jo Hooker and husband Randy, Dennis Lee Thompson and wife Kay; grandchildren, Stephanie Gesch and husband Brian, Sheena Dykstra and husband Alan, Blaine Thompson, Brian Thompson and fiancé Melissa and nine great grandchildren; sister Billie Adams of Waco and Brother-in-law Roy Dale Rambo of Lewisville and several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2020 at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 21, 2020 at Johnson’s Funeral Home with Pastor Randy Bush officiating, interment will follow in Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
