Joyce Elizabeth Poage

Joyce Elizabeth Poage passed peacefully on Saturday, July 18, 2020 in Fort Worth. She was born in Rosebud, TX on April 20, 1923 to Joe and Luna Raabe Vlha. 

Joyce graduated from Rosebud High School and met her future husband, J D Poage there. They married March 15, 1946 and shortly after moved to Big Spring where their first daughter, Betty was born. They lived on a ranch outside Rankin when their second daughter, Billie was born. They eventually settled in Big Lake, TX where they raised their family and lived for many years. 

Joyce was a stay at home mom until her children were old enough and she went to work at Boone Motor Company. She had a good group of friends who would gather for coffee and fellowship. She was an avid gardener and known to have one of the prettiest yards in town. She was also a member and past president of the Reagan County Gardening Club. 

Joyce loved to play Bridge. She would travel the state playing in tournaments and earned her Life Master. She played until her late 80’s. Even after giving up Bridge she continued to play cards up until recently. 

Joyce and JD were faithful members of the First United Methodist Church of Big Lake. In their later years they were active members of Trailblazers. They both were very involved in the community and loved living in Big Lake. 

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Billye Jean Coskrey, her husband, JD and daughter Betty. She is survived by her sister Mary Jo Martin, her daughter Billie Farr and husband Phil, grandsons Jeff Farr and wife Stephanie, Zack Farr and wife Danielle, and her great grandkids – Libby, Cade, Avery, Sawyer and Audrey. She is also survived by a group of very close nieces, nephews, and friends. 

There will be a graveside service on Thursday, July 23rd at 1pm at Glen Rest Cemetery in Big Lake, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to First United Methodist Church of Big Lake or a charity of your choice.

Georgia Helen Prickett Pope

Georgia Helen Prickett Pope died Monday, July 20, 2020 and was 88 at death. She was born January 13, 1932 on a farm near Watonga, Oklahoma to Arnold Julius Prickett and Fern Neal Prickett. They lived in Watonga, Oklahoma and moved to Canton, Oklahoma in 1936 where she lived, attended school and graduated from Canton High School in 1950. She attended Oklahoma State where she fell in love. She married the love of her life, Leland D. Pope June 1, 1952. They had two daughters, Christy Lee and Julie Beth. 
They Lived in Georgia and Louisiana and Oklahoma. Leland returned from Korea in 1954. They moved to Gallup, New Mexico and lived there for 35 years. While in Gallup she taught school, was a licensed insurance agent and had retail clothing stores. During this time Helen became a Genealogist and published six books. 
She was active in the community: She is a qualified Bridal consultant, Certified Residential Property Appraiser, Past Matron Order of Eastern Star, Past Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls, Past President of Gallup Soroptimist Club, Past Republican County Chairman of McKinley Co., Past Education Chairman Jacksonville, FL Genealogical Society. Helen was Registrar for 4 years of the Orlando Chapter Of National Society of Daughter of the American Revolution, Past President of Christian Temple Chapter of Colonial Dames XVII Century, also served 4 years as State Registrar for the United States Daughter of 1812, She is also as member of Barons and Dames of the Magna Charta and Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims. In 1962 was listed in the Who’s Who in the Southwest and Who’s Who in American Politics. 
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leland, sister, Barbara Long, and nephew, Alan Long. 
Helen is survived daughters, Christy Butler of Gallup, NM and Julie Mills of Winter Garden FL, granddaughter, Brandy and husband Bryan Hawkins, San Angelo, TX, grandson, Neal Butler, Gallup NM and her beloved great-granddaughter, Hailey Hawkins, San Angelo, TX. And many other relatives.

Marvin Hollie Power

Marvin Hollie Power, 84, formally of Ballinger, died in San Angelo on July 19, 2020, at Shannon Medical Center.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Marvin was born on November 7, 1935, to Claud H. and Leota Whitfield Power. On July 29, 1956, He married Sondra Jean Hilburn in Lawton, Oklahoma. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War.

He worked as an electrician until his retirement. Marvin had a fondness for sweets, especially chocolate shakes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sondra; and a daughter, Lisa Deann Power.

Marvin is survived by two sons, James Hollie Power of San Angelo and Christopher G. Power of Rowena; two sisters, Joyce Boggess of Little Elm and Jo Rita Nix of Houston, Texas; two grandsons, Jarrod D. Power of St. Thomas USVI and Eyon Ryon Power of Rowena; five granddaughters, Andrea Dawn Green of Murfreesboro, TN, Heather Mae Power of Hilton Head Island, SC, Whitney Joyce Knight of Ballinger, Mallory Hazel Cross of Stephenville and Macee Bryce Power of Rowena; and six great grandchildren.

David Mahlon Gould

David Mahlon Gould answered the final call and went to his Heavenly Father on Monday, July 13, 2020, in his home surrounded by family. David was born in San Angelo, Texas, on February 2, 1948, to Lou Loftin Gould and William Gordon Gould, Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Barbara Fassett of Colorado; and brother, James Loftin Phillips, of Nebraska.  
David grew up in San Angelo and graduated in 1966 from San Angelo Central High School. He attended Angelo State University, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in mathematics and a minor in economics. On the first day of college he heard of a job with L.T. Moore at Western Printing Company. David interviewed, and began working for them that day. He held this position until after graduation from Angelo State. David was an integral part of the Kappi XI fraternity beginnings on November 6, 1966, as the 25th member, and of the Lambda Chi Fraternity, Beta Alpha Chapter, becoming the 16th member on May 10, 1968. He was also a member of Alpha Mu Gamma and Pi Mu Epsilon. 
David went on to work for GTE for 24 years, retiring in 1995. While working for GTE he traveled the southeastern and eastern states, making friends everywhere he went. He enjoyed many baseball games and other adventures while traveling. He made many trips to Laughlin, Nevada, and counted those regular travelers and casino employees among his many friends. Some of his fondest memories included a summer trip with his son visiting Major League parks, officiating the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and attending the 2012 LSC Baseball Championships.  
He was dedicated to his community and his family. He served as president of the Downtown Lion’s Club from 1980-1981. He was an active member of the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd. As a staunch supporter of Angelo State University sports, he attended a myriad of sporting events until he was physically unable.  
David is survived by his wife, Karla Jo (Eubanks) Gould. He is also survived by his son, Sean Gould and wife, Adrian, of Birmingham, Alabama, and their children Jane and Ty; daughter, Shana Baldwin and husband, Patrick, of Waco, Texas, and their children Cole and Cason; and daughter Anna Augustin and husband, Josh, of San Angelo and their children Landon and Addison. He is survived by his brother, Bill Gould and wife, Paula; brother-in-law, Bruce Fassett; along with a nephew, nieces, and numerous great-nieces and nephews. 
David had a fondness for Meals for the Elderly, Concho Valley PAWS, and Critter Shack, requesting memorials go to one of them. His family wishes to thank Hospice of San Angelo, Dr. Ty Hughston, Dr. Raj Cheruku, and his sister-in-law, Kathy Powell for his care. The family would also like to thank friends, fraternity brothers, gambling buddies, and all the other people too numerous to thank individually. If you knew David, you knew one thing: he never, ever threw a friend away. Once you became a friend, you were a friend for life! 
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd, 3355 West Beauregard, San Angelo, Texas.

Maria Zamora Gaitan

Maria Zamora Gaitan, lived to a great age of 91, and departed on July 17, 2020 at Angelo Community Hospital in San Angelo, TX. Born on December 24, 1928 in Baytown, Texas. 
She was preceded in death by her husband: Guillermo O. Gaitan, her parents: Carlos Rodriguez Zamora and Maria De Luisa Escamilla; two brothers: Carlos Zamora and Paul Zamora and three sisters: Maria Carmen Zamora, Maria Arcelia Saenz, and Maria Delores Zamora. 
Maria was the second oldest of ten children who was raised to never let anyone get the best of you and knew what it meant to put in a hard day’s work. As a young girl she worked on her family’s ranch along with her siblings and we were told that she could ride a horse and shoot a gun better than most men. 
Maria loved animals, being outdoors and taking care of her grandchildren, which she did on several occasions. She was also an extraordinarily strong, independent courageous women who raised her five children on her own after her husband died and never let anyone forget that she could take care of herself. 
Maria leaves to cherish her memories her five children, Gloria Abdelmonem, Teresa Doty, Alise (Tony) Biggs, Guillermo “Bill” (Diane) Gaitan Jr, and Irene Z. (Tony) O’Neal, and twelve grandchildren, Charles M. Gaitan, Monique Robinson, L.D. Doty III, Terri Doty, Alyson DeHoyos, Haley Biggs, Tyler Biggs, Miranda Schmidt, Rudy Ruiz, Kinon O’Neal, Kiana O’Neal, and Kuintin O’Neal and 15 greatgrandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her youngest brother Rafael Zamora, and two younger sisters Violet Zamora, and Elva Zamora. 
A memorial service will be held at a later date. 
Anyone who had the opportunity to get to know her was lucky because she was a tough lady and you would know that upon your first meeting. 
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Angelo Community Hospital for taking such great care of our mother.

ohn F. Petrie, Jr., 85, of San Angelo, Texas, died Monday, July 13, 2020 in New Braunfels. John was born June 10, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to John F., Sr., and Margaret C. Petrie. John, until his retirement, was an accounting and data processing analyst for local governments in Illinois and Ohio with the Tekcom Corp. of which he was a partner. His prior endeavors included: Municipal Engineering and City Planning; Village Manager; and Village Administrator. His civic activities included: Village Trustee; Mayor; Park District Commissioner; Plan Commissioner; and Plan Commission Chairman. 
He was a former and current member of the following Professional and Fraternal Organizations: Construction Specifications Institute; Jaycees; Illinois City Management Association; Rotary Club; Knights of Columbus; and the International City Management Association. 
John was preceded in death by his wife Roberta, his son Joseph, and his wife Susan. He is survived by son John, III and wife Claudia and daughters Heather her husband Tim, their son Jonathan, and daughter Alice; Nicole and her fiancé Andrew; and Stacey and her husband Steve, and their daughter Kaida; his son Joseph’s daughter Victoria and her husband Rick; Joseph’s son Joe, Jr., and his wife Cathy, and their son Alexander and daughter Abagail. 
The Graveside Service will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery with Rev. Charles Greenwell officiating.

Luisa Oropeza Marquez, 88, of Big Lake gained her angel wings on Monday, July 13, 2020. She fought a hard battle with Covid-19. 
Luisa was born on June 19, 1932 to Macario Oropeza & Magdalena Morales in Los Cristales, Coahuila, Mexico. Luisa was a resident of Big Lake since 1972. She attended Iglesia Apostolica faithfully for over 42 years. She was baptized on October 21, 1978. Luisa was loyal to her church. Cleaning & cooking avidly & never missing her tithings. Anything she could do for her church she would. She served her Lord with abundant dedication. 
Luisa loved & cared for her family with all her heart. She took pride in all her children's & grandchildren's accomplishments. 
One of her favorite hobbies was her yard. If you saw her yard, you would know she loved this earth. She also loved to cook & feed everyone that came into her home. 
Luisa was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years Raul Marquez, sister's Paula Oropeza, Josefa Oropeza De Cardona, brother’s Selestina Oropeza, Andrez Oropeza & Eutimio Oropeza. 
Luisa is survived by daughter's Linda (Jesus) Salazar, Maria (Gerardo) Villarreal, Rosa (JR.) Portales, son's Ricardo (Dyanira) Marquez, David (Irma) Marquez, Juan (Ida) Marquez, Robert Marquez all of Big Lake, Jose (Luz) Marquez of Houston; 24 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren & numerous nieces & nephews whom she loved very much. 
Visitation & viewing will be held from 6p.m.-8p.m. at Harper Funeral Home, 2606 Southland Blvd., San Angelo, Texas, on Wednesday, July 15, 2020. Graveside services to be held on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at 10a.m. Glen Rest Cemetery HWY 137 South, Big Lake, Texas officiated by Minister Gabriel Romero. Face masks required. 

We will miss you Senora Luisa Marquez. You will forever remain in our hearts.
