Abbott, Sr. Guy Leon

09/21/2020 - 16:04 , by TKing09

Guy Leon Abbott, Sr., 75, of San Angelo went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 surrounded by his loving family and close friends. Guy was born July 25, 1945 in San Angelo, Texas to Leon and Mildred Luther Abbott. He grew up in San Angelo and graduated from San Angelo Central High School. Guy attended Angelo State University for a few semesters. He also served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps before deciding to enter into a career in law enforcement. Guy married the love of his life, Sabre Janelle Muehlbrad on June 5, 1966 in Brownwood, Texas. They shared 54 beautiful years together and raised two children. Guy served as Deputy Sherriff in Travis County and then later as the Chief Deputy Constable in Travis County. After moving back to San Angelo, Guy served as a Deputy Sheriff in Tom Green County for some time before leaving law enforcement. He and his brother partnered together to run Abbott’s Grocery Store when their father retired, and after many years Guy would retire from there. He was not the kind of person to sit around and be idle after retirement, so he decided to run Blockbuster Video in San Angelo until his health would no longer allow him to work. Even in his spare time, Guy remained very active in the community as a Shannon Medical Center Volunteer, a member of the San Angelo Downtown Lions Club, the San Angelo chapter of the American Legion, the Concho Country Emmaus Community, an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and most of all playing Santa at Christmas time for many people in the community. Dressed as Santa, Guy and his wife Sabre would visit every floor of Shannon Medical Center to bring joy to all the patients, young and old, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning. In his “real” spare time, he enjoyed dancing and fishing and especially being with his grandchildren and following them to all of their sporting events or school events. Guy was a very loving and giving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and all-around person who devoted his life to his family and community with his Lord being the center of it all. His love and generosity and quick wit will remain in our hearts forever and we will dearly miss him! Guy was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandson, Kyler Scott Lee. He is survived by his wife, Sabre J. Abbott; his Daughter, Sheila Marie Baker and her husband Gary Baker; his Son Guy Leon Abbott, Jr. and his wife Elisha “Rocki” Abbott; his Grandchildren, Cody Lynn Lee and his wife Randi Lee, Tyson Michael Baker and his wife Mandi Baker, (Kyler Scott Lee,) Ayden Dale Abbott and Avery Kiersten Abbott; his great grandchildren, Jaelyn Nikole Baker and Malia Grace Baker who is “on the way.” Guy is also survived by his brothers, Bobby Abbott and his wife Loretta Abbott, Lonnie Abbott and his wife Millie Abbott; his Sister, Mary Beitler; his Brother’s-in-law, Steve and Carla Benton, and Mike and Shirley Benton; his Sister’s-in-law, Pat and Roy Salas, Shirley and Clint McEwin and Judy and Dean Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Friday, September 18, 2020 at Harper Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, September 19, 2020 at St. Luke United Methodist Church in San Angelo with Rev. Gary Karschner, Rev. Larry Altman and Pastor Jim Noble officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. The family is respectfully requesting that everyone attending the services wear a mask during the visitation and funeral service for everyone’s safety. The family would also like to extend their sincerest thanks and appreciation to Dr. Carl Anderton and his staff, Dr. Raj Cheruku, Hospice of San Angelo, and Gary and Debbie Karschner and Larry Altman for all of the excellent, loving care and tireless help given to Guy during his illness. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society in memory of Guy Abbott.

Dabney Ronald (Ronnie) Lee

09/14/2020 - 09:52 , by TKing09

It is with broken hearts that my sister and I announce the passing of our "little" brother. Ronnie passed from this life into the arms of Jesus after suffering with pancreatic cancer for almost five years. Ronald Lee Dabney was born in Midland, Tx on February 21, 1956, the fourth and final child of Joe and Murry Dabney. He died Friday, September 11, 2020 with his sisters and brother-in-law by his side.
Ronnie was a stoic, soft-hearted, hardworking, gentle soul who was always noticed because of his 6'6" stature. He was called "big man" by some although he was a gentle giant, sensitive to others and forever positive. He was always being asked, "How tall are you?" or "What's it like being so tall?" Being tall made Ronnie unique, but it was his gentle soul and his unassuming, quiet nature that endeared him to many. He was a kind man, a gentle man, a humble man, and a precious brother. He fought bravely to live. He remained hopeful and never, ever complained nor did he ever question why me?
Ronnie loved boating and fishing, car races, old westerns, and family gatherings. He was blessed by being a member of the Southgate Church of Christ family. He worked as a painter for the last 12 years in the Facilities Management Dept. at Angelo State University. He previously worked with his brother Larry in their own DABNEY PAINTING business. There was nothing Ronnie could not do and he was forever the perfectionist.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his older brother Larry Travis Dabney, mother Murry Jean Dabney Wells and Father Joe Woodley Dabney. He is survived by his sisters- Jo Lyn (Jody) Johnson, Nancy Jean Davis, brother-in-law Don Davis, cousin Terry Jean Eager and husband Joe (Wichita Falls), nephew John Travis Johnson ( Rochester, NY), niece Melissa Smith and husband Lyle and family ( Waco, Tx), several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Ronnie was a treasure that we wanted to keep much longer. He brought joy and laughter with his quick wit, contentment, and pride to our lives. We could predict that no matter what was said, Ronnie's comeback was always, "Good Grief!" We were blessed to call him brother. "We love you li'I brother!"
Graveside services will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Special thanks to Dr. Raj Cheruku, the Shannon Chemo nurses, Dr. James Melott, Hospice of San Angelo, and all friends who called him, checked on him, visited him, sent cards, and prayed for him.

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads his white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
He is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch him until at length he hangs like a speck of white cloud just where
the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says: "There! He's gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all.
He is just as large in mast and hull and spar as he was when he left my side, and just as able to bear his load
of living freight to the place of destination. His diminished size is in me, not in him; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There! He's gone," there are other eyes watching him coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There he comes!"
And that is Dying!

Rittman Richard James "Dick"

09/14/2020 - 09:50 , by TKing09

Richard James “Dick” Rittman was 88 years old when he was called home to heaven on Thursday, September 10th, 2020 surrounded by his wife and 5 daughters. The fifth of six children, he was born on March 20, 1932, in Keokuk, Iowa to William and Minnie Rittman.

Dick grew up in Iowa and Arkansas, and served 4 years in the US Navy. He attended high school at Subiaco Academy and played basketball for The University of Arkansas, winning the Southwest Conference Championship in 1958 during his senior year. He married Betty Hiryak in 1954 and after graduation, moved his family to New Boston, Texas to start his coaching career. After several successful basketball coaching seasons and leading his team to a State Championship Final at New Boston, Dick was recruited to San Angelo as head basketball and assistant football coach at Central High School where he was part of the 1966 Football State Championship coaching staff. Dick retired from the San Angelo Independent School District in 1990 after 27 years, having served as Assistant Principal and Principal of John Glenn Junior High School, SAISD Athletic Director, and as Founding Director of PAYS School. He was inducted into the Texas Athletic Director Hall of Fame in 2015. His entire career was focused on the education and well-being of his students. He proudly wore his “Kids are Special” lapel pin to remind us all that our children are our special gift.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and four of his five siblings. He is survived by his sister Carolyn Brockert of Costa Mesa, CA. He is also survived by his wife Betty and five daughters; Susan (Dr. Gene) Sherrod, Cheri (Bob) Colby, Retta Smith, Mary (Brian) Thompson and Beth (Dr. Todd) Henderson. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren; Sarah Lamb, Julie Eledge, Jessica Stidham, Samantha Conner, Scarlett Calvin, Stephanie Long, Sterling Smith, Carson McCain, Stephen Lain, Aaron Willman, Brandon Willman, Clayton Willman, Jake Henderson, Matt Henderson and AnaClaire Henderson.

Dick was also the proud Papa to his fifteen great-grandchildren, Hudson and Harris Lamb, Finleigh and Fischer Eledge, Olivia Vilardo, Weston and Wyatt Conner, Stella and Rittman Calvin, Landry and Jaxson Long, Ben and Mason McCain, Harper and Bray Willman. He especially loved playing Santa Claus every Christmas season to not only his grandchildren and great-grandchildren but to the children of friends and relatives as well. For most of these children, Papa is the only Santa Claus they’ve ever known.

Dick’s love for the game of golf kept him young as he and Betty were proud members of Bentwood country club for close to 30 years. He played regularly with his golfing buddies and grandchildren. Even in his final months, you could find Dick enjoying time on the course, living life to the fullest, and regularly shooting his age.

Dick and Betty had the joy of celebrating their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries with their loving and expanding family. This October 4th would have been their 66th wedding anniversary. They were also very proud of their 58-year membership at Holy Angels Catholic Church.
