Jerry Ross Williams

07/06/2020 - 15:16 , by TKing09

Jerry Ross Williams, a devoted father and grandfather, joined the lord on July 4th 2020 while surrounded by loved ones. Jerry was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma on December 13th, 1936, to Clarence and Myrtle Williams. Jerry grew up in Monahans, Texas with his parents and Brother Jimmy. After graduating from Monahans High, he first attended school at Odessa College before achieving a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Texas Tech University.
Jerry married the love of his life, Connie Lynette Seay, on December 25th, 1955. The two would go on to have two children, Bobby Williams and Lynda Wright, and two grandchildren, Trey Wright and Justin and wife Larysa Wright. Though Jerry lost his wife in 1997, he would experience the joy of welcoming two additional grandchildren, Colby and Kayla, and 4 great grandchildren, Kolby, Lynlee, Taytum, and Jackson. Jerry and Connie were both proud parents and grandparents who were always active in the lives of their little loved ones.
Jerry had a very successful career as the president of several banks over his professional career. Though he was proud of the success he achieved, his real honor was his service to this country as a Sergeant in the United States Army. During his 6 years of enlistment, Jerry and Connie spent much of that time stationed overseas in both Germany and France. It was the experiences he gained overseas that made for great stories he would tell his children and grandchildren in his later years. Jerry’s other passions included being a proud 52 year member of several Masonic lodges, as well as a member of the Suez Shriners of San Angelo. Jerry was also a proud member of First Baptist Church of San Angelo. His hobbies included being an avid golfer, and in his later years he enjoyed traveling the country with friends.
To quote Jerry, “I have had a good and happy life”. This couldn’t be truer by all of the loved ones he has left behind to mourn his passing. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Jimmy Williams. Jerry is survived by 2 children, 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and a close and very special friend Pat Jewell.
On behalf of Jerry, his family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all of the medical staff at both Shannon Medical Center, and St. Gabriel’s Hospice and Palliative Care. Your commitment and dedication to helping Jerry through this tough time will never be forgotten.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation scheduled on July 8th from 6pm-8pm at Harper Funeral Home in San Angelo, TX. A graveside memorial will be held on July 9th at 10am, at Kermit Cemetery in Kermit, TX.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations in honor of Jerry R. Williams to the Suez Shriners at 2915 Loop 306, San Angelo, TX 76904.

Charles E. Powell COL. USAF (RET)

07/06/2020 - 09:58 , by TKing09

On the wings of angels, retired Air Force Colonel Charles E. Powell completed his final mission on July 2, 2020. Born on May 7, 1931 in Nashville, Arkansas, Charles grew up in Nashville, met his future wife, and graduated with her from Nashville High School in 1949. He started college at Arkansas College and transferred to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD where he graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering and was commissioned into the United States Air Force.

His 30-year Air Force career began with pilot training at Spence Air Base, Georgia in 1954 and he graduated training at Reese AFB, Texas in 1955. From there, flying SC-54s C-124s, KB50Js and HC-130s, his missions spanned the globe, supporting trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific deployments of tactical forces, aerial refueling missions supporting reconnaissance activities in the Cuban Missile Crisis and finally, volunteering to serve in Vietnam where he was a Rescue Crew Commander and Airborne Mission Commander. In Vietnam, Col. Powell flew 168 combat missions and was credited with 14 combat “saves.” He also participated in the planning and execution of the Son Tay POW Camp raid. Across his career he logged over 6.700 flying hours and was awarded a multitude of medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Legions of Merit, Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with three Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with a Bronze Star, RVN Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars.

In addition to flying missions, during his military career Col. Powell served in a variety of positions including flight instructor, Plans and Programs Officer in the Directorate of Doctrine, Concepts and Objectives at USAF Headquarters, and Director of Curriculum, then Vice-Commandant at the Air Command and Staff College and Chief of Staff of Air University. During this time, he also earned a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering with distinction from the University of Pittsburgh, His final appointment on June 24, 1980 was to command the 3480th Technical Training Wing, Goodfellow AFB, Texas.

They say the sum of one’s life is the mark they leave upon the world. Charles Powell had already made his mark in the military world, but retirement from the Air Force proved he was just getting started. There were many more marks to make. When he and his wife, JoAnne, retired in San Angelo, Texas, Charles wasted little time before becoming a pillar of the community. He worked in banking and investments, first at Southwest Bank of San Angelo where he formed and directed the SWB Investment Centre, Inc., and then with Wells Fargo where he chaired the Community Bank Board.

And while banking and investments were his livelihood, his heart went out to making his community a better place to live. He served on practically every board in San Angelo at one time or another including United Way of the Concho Valley (President and Campaign Chairman), Leadership San Angelo, Boy Scouts of Southwest Texas, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), Fort Concho, American Heart Association, Project Janus, Inc., San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, and San Angelo Economic Development Task Force, to name a few. He also held positions on statewide boards including United Way of Texas and Texas Aviation Advisory Committee. But he never forgot his roots, giving his time and expertise to military issues including GAFB Coordinating Committee on BRAC issues, Congressman Mike Conaway’s Military Academy Nominating Board, and the P4 Initiative, a local military/civilian partnership to streamline the use of public resources.

Col. Charles Powell left his mark on San Angelo in the same way he left his mark on the military, and because of his efforts, he was honored for them, as well. He was named “Citizen of the Year” by the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce (1982), received the “Distinguished Citizen of the Year” award from the Boy Scouts of Southwest Texas (2015), inducted as an Honorary CMSgt” by Goodfellow Air Force Base (2016), and honored as “Veteran of the Year” at Angelo State University (2019). He also received statewide recognition for his work on airport infrastructure in San Angelo, receiving the “Road Hand Award” from the Texas Department of Transportation (2005), the first one awarded in TxDOT’s 35-year history for work in “Aviation Activities in Texas.”

A man of integrity, determination, honor, faith and love for others, Charles Powell left his mark wherever he went. At the end of his final mission, he will hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne, his daughter Teresa Anne McKinney and husband, Bryan of Flower Mound, TX, two grandchildren Dr. Colin Bryan Powell McKinney of Crawfordsville, IN, and Caitlin Brooke McKinney Cannady and husband, Jeremy, of San Angelo, TX, two nieces and a number of cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Alford Jackson Powell and Maggie Mae Powell Cowling, his in-laws Brooks & Iva Mae McAdams, brother-in-law James Brooks (Jim) Jim McAdams.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7th from 4:30 to 7:00 pm at Harper Funeral Home, San Angelo, TX. Masks are required.
The funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 8th at 10:00 am at Johnson Street Church of Christ also in San Angelo. Masks are also required for the service.
The burial service will follow immediately at Fairmount Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rust Street Ministries, Hospice of San Angelo or a charity of your choice.

The family is forever grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and offers of assistance from so many within the community of San Angelo, Tom Green County and the Concho Valley communities.
Special thanks to the doctors and staff of Shannon Medical Center and all the staff of West Texas Rehab’s Hospice of San Angelo for their care and support.

Dale Lee Bates

07/06/2020 - 09:55 , by TKing09

Dale Bates (85) passed away peacefully at his home on July 2nd. He started life in the latter part of the depression, in 1935, and was the son of Leonard Lee and Pearl France Bates. He graduated from San Angelo High School in 1953 as president of his class and most popular boy, and was then drafted into the army in December of 1955 with only one year of college credit from San Angelo College, now ASU. Just as he was shipping off to Europe, his father suffered a massive heart attack, and he was granted a hardship discharge from the Army. He worked with his family to re-structure the family trucking business and pay off the family debts. With the family then financially secure, he returned to college and entered the Army Reserves. With no financial support from family, he worked his way through college and graduated from the University of Texas in 1960, achieving a degree in Money and Banking. Kay Wall and Dale Bates married in August of 1959. This started their amazing 60 years of marriage into which two children were born, Allyson and Devin. After graduation, Dale worked for The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas as an assistant bank examiner for one and a half years. Dale then began working for the Central National Bank of San Angelo, but on his first day, he was recalled to active duty with the 49th Armored Division during one of the Berlin Wall/Germany crises. During this active duty time, he attended OCS at Ft. Sill and became an Army Officer. His division was released in ten months and he re-joined The Central National Bank of San Angelo, Texas, where he worked for more than fifteen years. Throughout his life, Dale was an avid WWII buff and loved reading, learning, and talking about the various battles, especially in the Pacific. Leaving the banking business, Dale started his career in farming, ranching and guided hunting, which lasted for more than thirty years. During this time, Dale learned to fly airplanes and spent many hours in the seat of a piper cub. Not only could he check the water on the ranch and some oil wells he had in Sterling County, but whenever the local and surrounding volunteer fire departments were called out, so was Dale and his airplane. They communicated by two-way radios, so Dale could tell the fire trucks where to go. Dale became active in local county government. In addition to serving on the Irion County school board, Dale and The Irion County Underground Water District built a weather modification program that, at one time, operated in one-third of the land area in Texas. Retiring in 2001, Dale was treated for two cancers that remained in remission until his death, but did cause him to sell the ranch and move to town to receive treatment. This tough rancher and oil man had a creative side as well. He was a very accomplished dry brush watercolorist during his time on the farm. In his "retirement," he authored three books, My Journey, God Drops, and God Drops In. Dale and Kay spent his remaining years enjoying their beautiful back yard.

Dale is survived by his wife, Kay; his daughter, Allyson, and her husband, Rick Baumeister of Fort Worth; his son, Devin, and his wife Liz of San Angelo; Allyson's and Rick's children, Natalie Baumeister, Parker Turner and his wife, Angela, Bobby Baumeister, and Reed Turner; Devin's and Liz's children, Brandt Bates, and Madison Bates; several special nieces, nephews and cousins and their families. Dale was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of San Angelo for over fifty years and served on the board of Deacons for many years. The family wishes to express our appreciation to Hospice of San Angelo and to TLC who took such good care of Dale.

In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial to an organization of your choosing.

Visitation will be at Harper Funeral Home on Monday, July 6th from 5:00-7:00 pm. A celebration of Dale's life will be held on Tuesday, July 7th at 4:00 pm at The First Presbyterian Church of San Angelo, 32 N. Irving St.
