05/08/2014 - 13:59 , by johnb

John Powell Nasworthy, 91, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in San Angelo, Texas.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am, Friday, May 9, at Fairmount Cemetery, with Monte Jones officiating. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home.

John was born July 4, 1922 in San Angelo, Texas to Mark and Sallie Nasworthy. He was raised in San Angelo but graduated from Forsan High School. Leaving High School to enlist in the Navy in 1942, he saw service in the Pacific serving on the USS Gamble. Returning to San Angelo on leave, he married Mattie Mae West. After his discharge, he and Mae spent time in Oregon and Montana but returned to San Angelo to farm on the river. As the drought of the 1950's came, John and Mae moved to Alaska, where they spent 12 happy years. After securing a job with the FAA, John and Mae moved to California, Oklahoma, and returning to San Angelo to retire.
Not wishing to sit on his hands, John involved himself with Masonic Lodge 570, Suez Shrine, and Commandery. John received the most joy from working with local children in getting them treatment in various Shrine Hospitals. Sometimes known as Handsome John, he never met a stranger and always offered a warm hand shake and a smile.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center for their devotion during John's stay.

John is preceded in death by Mae Nasworthy, Mark and Sallie Nasworthy, Mark Henry Nasworthy, and Lacy Lett.

John is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved him and will miss him.

He married Patty Duratny on May 20, 1989, and they shared 24 wonderful years together. Rod was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who devoted his life to his country and family. Pope Nannie

05/08/2014 - 13:49 , by johnb

Nannie Westbrook Pope, 101, of San Angelo peacefully joined her Lord on May 6, 2014. The family will celebrate her life on Friday, May 9 at Johnson's Funeral Home. The service will start at 11am with interment to follow at Lawnhaven Cemetery. Visitation will also be at Johnson's Funeral Home on Thursday, May 8 from 7-8 pm. Nannie was born on June 22, 1912 to the late William Henry and Mollie Westbrook née Wheat. Nannie attended Grape Creek Grade School and was a 1931 graduate of Lake View High School. While at LVHS, Nannie played on the girls basketball team. She married the love of her life I.O. "Jade" Pope on March 10, 1933. A common theme throughout Nannie's life would be seen in her efforts to serve the Lord by tirelessly and selflessly serving others. In her early years, this included doing tasks on her family farm to help her father such as picking cotton, driving tractors, and making sausage. Later, she served many years as a caretaker for Judge Jared P. Hill and family as well as many others working as a nurse at Goodfellow Air Force Base in which she received numerous outstanding service awards. Outside of her work as a nurse, Nannie did not relent in her dedication to service, especially to her family. Whether it was making her famous pecan pie, pound cake, or macaroni-n-cheese for her grandchildren or sewing handmade aprons (of which she made over 400) for her friends and family. Nannie was passionate in everything she did, especially in cheering for the Rangers, Cowboys, Spurs, and Thunder sports teams. Several of her great grandchildren attended Texas Tech University and Nannie also became an avid Red Raider fan. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jade Pope, her son-in-law William Clyde "Cap" Berry, and her three sisters and six brothers. To cherish her memory, she leaves behind her two loving children, Patsy "Pat" Berry and Henry Pope and wife Billie Helen; grandchildren, Sherry Cooper and husband Buddy, Susie Peznowski and husband Ray, and Mollie Dierschke and husband Monroe; great-grandchildren, Ryan Cooper and wife Kaki, Katie Heinrich and husband Ryan, Jason Moncrief, Brent Keith and wife Brandy, Sarah Tharp and husband Marshall, Sally Dierschke, and Sadie Dierschke; great-great-grandchildren, Kate and Lily Cooper and Halli and Blair Heinrich, and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved poodle, Beau. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Odyssey Hospice especially Megan Vick, Ann Crow, and Barbara Johnson. The family also thanks her dedicated landscaper, Henry Klepac, for his many years of service to Nannie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Odyssey Hospice Gentiva Foundation (http://www.gentivahospicefoundation.org/).
