Martin Jimmy Melvin

05/06/2014 - 14:32 , by johnb

Jimmy Melvin Martin, 84 of Big Lake, entered God's Heavenly Kingdom on April 27, 2014 at this residence.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, at First Baptist Church in Big Lake followed by services at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. J. B. Bitner, Jr. and Rev. Gerald Bastin conducting the service. Burial will follow in Glen Rest Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas.

Jimmy was born September 17, 1929 in Ranger, Texas to Emmett Lucian Martin and Ellie Mae Lee Martin. After graduating from Ranger High School, he married the love of his life, Jane Ann McMillan on June 24, 1951 in Barnhart, Texas. They then moved to Big Lake where they raised their 3 children, Jimmy Mack, Jana, and Jena and shared 61 beautiful years together until her death on November 6, 2012. Jimmy and Jane owned and operated Martin's Department Store for almost 60 years. During that time Jimmy and Jane also built and owned the Derrick Inn Motel for many years. In 1986, Jimmy got a taste of the oil business and formed Jimmy Martin, Inc. He was always proud of the legacy of his family businesses.

Jimmy was a life-long member of First Baptist Church in Big Lake.

Jimmy was a generous and fun-loving man. He never met a stranger. He was always anxious to reach out his hand to meet a new friend and find out where they were from. The close bond he was able to form with people was a special gift Jimmy had. More than anything, though, his family brought him more joy than one could imagine. You could see his face light up and the twinkle in his eyes at the mere mention of Jane, Jimmy Mack, Jana, or Jena. As his family grew, so did the love Jimmy had for his family.

Jimmy is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jane, his loving son, Jimmy Mack, his parents, Emmett Lucian and Ellie Mae Martin, his brother, Charles Martin, his great granddaughter, Kynsley Ann Bryant, and his niece, Julie Martin.

He is survived by his loving daughters Jana Fisher and husband, Mike, and Jena Fisher and husband, Gregg all of Big Lake. He is also survived by his brother and buddy E. L. Martin and wife, Melba, of Lubbock, and his sister, Jane Carver, of Graham and several nieces and nephews. His pride and joy were his 4 grandkids Landon Fisher and wife, Stace, Leah Bryant and husband, Tanner, all of San Angelo, Brennan Fisher of Lubbock and Brady Fisher of Big Lake. Also surviving are his 2 great grandsons, Connor and Hudson Fisher of San Angelo, and another great grandson on the way. He is survived by 2 special nieces and their families, Kathryn Sellers of Colleyville and Beverly Barnett of San Antonio. Also surviving are numerous friends and relatives and last, but not least, his loyal and faithful, furry companion who he adored, Joe Boy.

Havins Mildred Louise

05/06/2014 - 14:17 , by johnb

Mildred Louise Havins, born to Fred and Willie Terresa Havins in Lometa, Texas on Dec. 13, 1914, will be buried in Robert Lee on April 29, 2014.

She grew up in and around Robert Lee. Some of her earliest memories were picking cotton and farm chores in addition to playing with her six brothers and sisters on the family farms near Sanco and Valley View in Coke County. She married Roy Gene Denman in Bronte, Texas on July 19, 1932, and they made a home in Coke County for many years. They raised a daughter, Theresa Jean Denman Brady, in Robert Lee Richland Springs and Brady, Texas. Later, Mr. and Mrs. Denman managed Dietz Memorial Monument Co. in Cleburne, Texas for 30 years.

They enjoyed dancing, cook outs, gardening and spending time with friends and family. After Mr. Denman's death in 1985, Mrs. Denman ("Granny") lived with her daughter and children, in Gettysburg, Pa. and later Wheaton, Ill. Mrs. Denman returned to West Texas in 1997, and lived in San Angelo where she worked as an aide at Austin Elementary. In 2010, she entered a nursing home near one of her grandsons, Patrick Brady and his family in Waco, Texas. Mrs. Denman's faith in Jesus Christ was a source of strength, comfort and pleasure for her throughout her life.

She was baptized by her grandfather, Andrew Lackey, who was a circuit preacher on the west Texas frontier, and she was a Baptist who attended church faithfully. It always pleased her when her daughter and later her daughter's children and grandchildren made a profession of faith and demonstrated it by water baptism. She loved her family ? her husband and descendants as well her many brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces and nephews with whom she corresponded as often as she was able. She was rarely idle. If she was not cooking, cleaning or sewing, she was reading or working puzzles. She was a great cook and truly a "cookies and milk" granny.

Mrs. Denman is survived by the couple's only child, Theresa Jean Denman Brady; a grandson, Patrick Brady, his wife, Robin and their two daughters, Kyla and Megan Brady; another grandson, Kelly Brady, his wife, Sherri, their son Andrew, and their two daughters, Micah and Rachel Brady; and a granddaughter, Erin Smith, her husband Eric Smith, and their two sons, Brady and Tully Smith. Mrs. Denman is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews and their extended families as well as one cousin, Kenneth Lackey and his wife Kay Lackey. Pallbearers for the service will be Patrick Brady, Kelly Brady, Eric Smith, Roy Leek, Louis Ornelas, Daniel Flores, Andrew Brady and James Porter. Honorary Pallbearers for the service will be Kenneth Lackey, Brady Smith and Tully Smith. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2014, at Johnson's Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Kelly Brady officiating. A graveside service will be held in Robert Lee Cemetery in Robert Lee, Texas.
