David P. Key Jr., 94, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, June 13, 2016 in Robert Lee, Texas.
David was born October 21, 1921 to D.P. and Jessie Shropshire Key in the small community of Punkin Town, near Edith, west of Robert Lee, in Coke County, Texas. He was the baby of the family with his two older sisters, Wilma and Vernie, who liked to spoil him.
David graduated from Robert Lee High School in 1938. He worked different jobs from being a hamburger cook to helping his dad in the livestock trucking business until joining the US Armed Forces. David proudly served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946. In 1946 he returned to Robert Lee and opened a feed store. On September 6, 1947, he married Alene Gaines. They were blessed with a son, Joe David and a daughter, DeeAnna. Another great joy of his life was his grandchildren, Jason and Jessica.
David was a hard worker, loading many a sack of feed for forty years, when he "retired" from the feed store in 1986. His son had joined him in the feed business in 1974 and David continued to help out for several more years even after "retirement". He also loved ranching and feeding the cows. In later years, when he no longer was able to ranch, he enjoyed his chickens and fresh eggs, gardening and his flowers. He had his mother's green thumb and liked sharing the vegetables with his family and friends.
Growing up, his family was active in the Northside Church of Christ in Robert Lee. In later years, he became an active member of Robert Lee Baptist Church. He served many years as a deacon there until his health would no longer permit it.
He is survived by his son, Joe David and wife Teri; daughter, DeeAnna Harmon and husband Joe; grandson, Jason David Key and fiancé, Kate Zora; granddaughter, Jessica Key Kolasa and husband Doren; and great-grandchildren, Jaren, McKinley and Creed Kolasa and Kye Scott Kolasa due to arrive later this month; brother-in-law, Jess Gaines and wife Dorothy; sister-in-law, Rena Gaines; and many dear nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alene Gaines Key (by 2 days); his parents; sisters, Wilma Shelburne and Vernie Smith.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the West Coke County EMS, and Robert Lee Care Center for their loving care and also to Dr. Shaik, Dr. Mull and PA Burrage and the entire staff on five South at Shannon Medical Center for the wonderful care they have provided to him over the last eight days.
Visitation will be held all day Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at the funeral home with family present 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 10:00 am at Robert Lee Baptist Church in Robert Lee, Texas, with burial in Paint Creek Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.

Alfred Stanley "Duke" Allen, Jr.

06/11/2016 - 16:38 , by johnb

The world lost a wonderful man on Thursday, June 9, 2016 in San Angelo. Duke was born December 28, 1955 in Chandler, AR to Alfred Stanley Allen, Sr. and Violet Elizabeth Iverson Allen. As a child, he lived all over the world as his father was a Colonel in the United States Air Force. Duke was always very proud of this fact and his experiences. He received his Bachelor Degree in Psychology from Arizona State University and started his career in Respiratory Therapy. After a few years, he became a teacher of Respiratory Therapy at the college level in Arizona. Duke then moved to Texas where he eventually settled in San Angelo and started teaching at Howard College. He married Viki Vasek on December 28, 1989 in Las Vegas, NV and they shared 26 beautiful years together. Everyone who knew Duke, knew what a loving kind, brilliant and hilarious gentleman and teacher he was. He loved teaching, researching genealogy, restoring vintage photos and performing stand-up comedy. His keen sense of humor, sharp wit and kind hearted nature allowed him to joke with anyone and get laughs out of everyone. He also loved having a nickname for everyone and everything in his life. Duke loved his family deeply. His life was so much bigger because they were in it. We think it is the other way around. Our lives were bigger because Duke was in ours! He was preceded in death by his parents. Duke is survived by his loving wife Vicki Allen, of San Angelo; his children, Whitney Poulson and her husband, Jeffrey, of North Carolina, and Jason Rhinebeck and Laura Dansby, of San Angelo; 4 Grandchildren; and his Sister, Linda Webb, of Meza, AZ. He is also survived by a host of friends he dearly cherished.
The Memorial Service will be 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Watkins officiating.
“I have one cup of coffee each morning just to start the day off right. The others are to keep me out of jail, help me form sentences, and fuel my razor sharp wit!”
No truer words were written to describe Duke Allen!

Irving Rafe Vines

06/11/2016 - 16:31 , by johnb
Irving Rafe Vines began the journey of his miracle life on April 22, 2016. He lived surrounded by the incredible NICU doctors, nurses, techs, and therapists of Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. We were blessed by his sweet little smiles, his beautiful big eyes, and the strength of his fight until his triumphant entry through Heaven's gate on June 7, 2016. Just three days earlier, the family had the privilege of dedicating to God both Irving and big sister, Katriel in a ceremony in the NICU. It was an amazing time for parents, grandparents and several hospital staff to pray and bind together under God and to join the newly named godmother, Aunt Melissa, in agreeing to always guide the children in a biblical way.
Irving enjoyed having visitors and would often find a cute way to acknowledge their presence. He loved to listen to praise songs, look at colorful picture books, and have his hair combed.
Though he lived only a little over 6 weeks, Irving's life overflowed with God's power and with love from so many. His family received numerous daily encouragements, prayers, and gifts evidencing God's love and comfort. Irving displayed God's Might as he amazed the medical staff battling through an intestinal surgery at 3 days old, Ebstein's heart anamoly, and complications from a birth that was more than two months early. Every day with Irving Rafe was a blessing; even his nurses would volunteer for extra shifts to be able to be with him. Though we cannot understand how someone so young could affect so many, we are sure that God is continuing to use his life and trials to bring others to know Christ better. Irving's family feels both honored and humbled that God allowed them to know him, even for this short time.
Irving has joined his grandfather, Buddy Vines, and many of his great grandparents gathering around the throne in Glory. Survivors include his parents, Matt and Rita Marie Vines; sister, Katriel Vines; half-siblings, Nathaniel, Briana, and Hannah Vines; grandparents, Martin and Rita Hernandez, and Alice Vines-Crowe and Don Crowe; great grandmothers Asusana Caldera and Betty Stewart; aunts, Melissa "Missa" Vines and Katrina Hernandez; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Non-profit organizations that were significant to Irving's life are West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Building Bridges of Hospice of San Angelo, Threads of Love, and Ambleside School of San Angelo.
Funeral services will be held to celebrate Irving's life on Monday, June 13, 2016 at 10 AM at Glen Meadows Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
"In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." 1 Thess 5:18. Thank You, Lord, for caring so much for our son, Irving. Thank You for taking him to Your side. Thank You for letting us hold him, though we would have wanted him much longer, we know Your timing and Your Plan is absolutely perfect. We love you, Lord.
