Darrell T. Smith

07/17/2017 - 11:10 , by johnb

Darrell Smith, beloved husband, father and friend to many, passed on to Glory with his family by his side on July 11, 2017 in Dallas Methodist Hospital. He fought the good fight and has finished the race.
Darrell was born April 10, 1937 in Monroe, LA. He grew up in Fairbanks, LA in those wonder years when they could roam the bayous and rivers, hunting and fishing and exploring freely. He graduated from Ouachita Parish High School and then in 1960 from Northeast Louisiana State College with a degree in Pharmacy. He practiced Pharmacy for over 55 years, all but 5 of those years in San Angelo, where he owned and operated Concho Drug, opened the first discount Pharmacies in the B-W stores, and later in the Gibson’s. In 1968, he bought Salvato Drug and operated it 40 years as Lakeview Drug and later Lakeview Saveall Pharmacy. He also owned and operated the hospital pharmacy at Baptist Memorial Hospital for 10 years. His Pharmacy career was a perfect fit for him as he loved people and being able to help them. He was always studying how to make his practice better and more effective, and that led to several firsts in his practice. He installed the first computer designed for retail Pharmacy in San Angelo, and also the first IV Pharmacy as an adjunct to Saveall Mediquip, the durable medical equipment company he added to Lakeview Drug. He also opened Mediquip locations in Midland, Brownwood, Corpus Christi, and Brady.
All this time he also was very involved in Christian Ministry, truly his first love. Always active in his church serving his Lord, first at College Hills Baptist Church and then for 40 years at First Baptist, as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. In the mid 1980’s he became the teacher for the Business Men’s Bible Class. The BMBC is said to be the oldest continuously broadcast religious program in Texas, having been on the radio since 1929. As a part of that ministry, which he so loved, he then began to do the Easter Sunrise Service that has been held every year since 1959 on the Wilke Ranch. For the past few years another love has been pastoring a small mission church, Fort Concho Baptist, following the BMBC class every Sunday. He accepted the mission handed down to him by Ernestine Scott; and has written the Daily Promises for the Standard Times for many years now, another labor of love for him as one of the “31”. Darrell and the family have also been involved in mission work in Brazil and Ukraine, building a church and doing evangelism in Brazil and training and supporting pastors in Ukraine through The Gospel Vision Foundation. Darrell was truly a faithful servant and a powerful witness for our Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 61 wonderful years, Kay. He was always on adventure with his children, daughter Rebecca and Gary Oostveen, and son Gregory and Kathy Smith. Four grandchildren, Emily and Justin Oostveen and Kaydee Smith Holderness and Daylan Smith, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his adopted Brazilian children, daughter, Luzinha Palmborg and husband Paul and son, John and Lucia Silva, and brother in law, John and Betty Birkner and niece, Jennifer Kent and children. He is also survived by a host of friends who he loved as family, and who loved him. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Scott and Andrew, his parents, and Kay’s parents and sister, Catherine.
Family visitation will be on Sunday, July 16 from 6 to 8PM at Harper Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 10:00AM Monday, July 17,2017 at First Baptist Church with Dr. James Hassell and Richard Jackson officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers for the service will be John Nolan, Rick Williams, Robert Lara, Thomas Bryant, Kim Coats, Dana Tipton, Max Sanders and Sam Espinoza. In lieu of flowers, please make any memorials in Darrell’s honor to Gospel Vision Foundation, First Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.

William "Bill" Jeff Carlisle

07/08/2017 - 13:07 , by johnb
On June 6th, 1939, Bill Carlisle was born in Oakdale, Louisiana to Pollard "Happy" and Vertis Carlisle. Bill grew up in Dequincy, La., graduating high school in 1957. In fact, 1957 was a busy year for Bill Carlisle. Bill not only graduated high school, but married the love of his life, Murphy Ray Alston, beginning a marriage bond that lasted over sixty years. He also started his telecommunication career at Southwestern States in 1957. Bill had a telecommunication career that spanned fifty years, from climbing poles as a installer repairman in south Louisiana to managing technical support for digital switching and fiber optics across the U.S. Bill spent thirty-five years at GTE Southwest (Verizon), bringing him from south Louisiana to San Angelo in 1970. After retiring from GTE in 1992, he spent another twenty years at Eastern Independent Telephone (EIT) before retiring from telecommunications in 2007 In May of 1968, Bill was awarded the Morris Felton Lacroix Award from General Telephone of the Southwest for saving a man's life. Bill was returning home from a swimming trip when he came upon a head-on collision. He reacted quickly to stop the massive bleeding using make-shift tourniquets from the wet swimming towels. Throughout his life, Bill loved teaching, supporting and helping others perhaps the most. He excelled at a wide range of hobbies and interests. Besides his expertise in telecommunications and computers, he was an excellent archer, marksman, gunsmith, blacksmith, hunter, fisherman and knife builder, building custom arrows, arrow heads, gun stocks and throwing axes. He participated in black powder mountain men rendezvous competitions, teaching people about the history of black powder, survival and throwing axes. Bill was a musician, pen and ink artist, custom engraver, gardener, welder, off road and touring motorcycle enthusiast. Bill loved playing Cajun music on his accordions, as well as playing the guitar in different bands, dating back to high school. Bill was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant from the Louisiana National Guard after eight years of service. He was a strong supporter and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), American Motorcycle Association (AMA), and Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA). After seventy eight years of working, supporting and helping others, despite a number of health issues, Bill finally rested comfortably after a difficult struggle with lung issues, taking his last breath on July 5th, 2017 in San Angelo, Texas. Bill is survived by his wife Murphy Carlisle; his son Michael and his wife Inelda Carlisle; his daughter Kathy Wills and her husband Bobby Wills; grandsons Bryan and his wife Leyra Carlisle, Scotty, Grant Wills and his wife Emily, Jonathan Goana; granddaughters, Gayla Carlisle, Christiana Gaona, Heather Hodges and her husband Billy Hodges, Gaby Mitchell and her husband Wesley Mitchell. He is also survived by fifteen great grandchildren, and a great great grandson. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, P. "Happy" and Vertis Carlisle, his brothers, Malcom "Mac" and Carlton Carlisle, and great granddaughter Amelia. Because Bill hoped people would not gather to grieve over his going home, but recall all the great times he shared with many, he requested no funeral services or memorial services be held. He does encourage notes and cards of support mailed to Murphy Carlisle, San Angelo, Texas 76905. Family and friends are encouraged to sign an online guestbook at www.johnsons-funeralhome.com

Alvetta Mae (Babe/Babysister) Kelly

07/07/2017 - 13:09 , by johnb

Alvetta Mae (Babe/Babysister) Kelly passed away peacefully to join her husband and loved ones in heaven on June 30, 2017.
She was born on November 21, 1931 to Major Lee and Corean Ruthel Lott Spurlock in San Angelo, Texas. Alvetta was an only child, her mother and father preceded her in death. She was a lifetime member of Wesley Trinity United Methodist Church.
She graduated from Blackshear High School at the age of 16. After High School, Alvetta attended Huston–Tillotson University, a private historically black university in Austin, Texas, where she graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration Degree.
Alvetta married Benjamin F. Kelly on August 25, 1954, and to this union three children were born.

Alvetta had a beautiful smile and a warm heart, a generous loving sprit, always putting others first before her own needs. She absolutely loved teaching, football, track, cooking, and helping others.
She had a passion for teaching and absolutely loved her students. Alvetta’s teaching career spanned over 30 years where she taught at Blackshear Elementary School, Belaire Elementary School, and Austin Elementary School. She retired at the age of 55 from Austin Elementary School in 1991.

Over the years she had taken several ASU students/football players under her wings. Loving each of them as only a mom could. Attending their football games, providing home cooked meals, and sharing her love and support. One football player in particular, Michael H. Millegan, who she lovingly referred to as her self-adopted son, remained in constant contact and communication with her until her death. They shared a special bond unlike any other.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Sharon Evonne Kelly Rivers of Missouri City, TX, Patricia LaTrelle Kelly Thompson of San Angelo, TX, a son Michael Durand Kelly of San Angelo, TX, and her self-adopted son, Michael H. The family expresses deep appreciation to Shannon Hospital 4th and 6th floor nursing, CNA, and housekeeping staff, DaVita Dialysis Center and Staff, Park Plaza Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, the nurses, staff members, employees, friends who live at Park Plaza. September 12 2014, Michael H. Millegan donated funds for renovation of what is now known as the Ben & Alvetta Kelly Weight Room in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Michael H. Millegan also created the Ben & Alvetta Kelly Football Scholarship Endowment, which will annually award a scholarship to a member of the ASU Rams football team.
