Hooper Ted (Tedy Gene)

07/16/2018 - 08:30 , by brandyp

Ted Hooper passed away on Saturday July 14th, 2018 from complications related to cancer and Parkinson’s disease, with family by his side.

Ted (a blessed few were allowed to call him by his full name Tedy Gene) was born in San Angelo on January 28, 1939, an only child to Genie Hill Hooper and Howard L. Hooper, who proceeded him in death.

He leaves behind three children who loved him dearly -- Brad Hooper and his wife Sue of Houston, Texas, Jill Bennett and her husband Steve of Colleyville, Texas, and Amy Bryce and husband Charles Bryce of San Angelo, in addition to three grandchildren and two great grandchildren whom he loved to tell you about: Phillip Love, wife Christina, and daughter Liberty of Garland, TX, Cade Bennett of Colleyville, TX and Erin Odell, husband Colby, and son Corbyn Gene of San Angelo.
He shares honorary grandchildren with his friend and previous wife Liz - Tyler, Hope and Faith, whom he loved dearly. He also leaves behind an aunt, Faye Hooper of San Angelo along with several cousins who he enjoyed visiting.

Ted lived most of his life in San Angelo with a brief stint in Dumas, Texas as the manager of the Chamber of Commerce. Ted spent his career in real estate and automotive sales. He had several repeat customers who turned into friends. The family couldn’t go anywhere with Dad without multiple people stopping him to say, "Hello."

He was a character for sure and a very generous man. The saying, "He’d give you the shirt off his back," defines him to a tee. He loved treating people to dinners. Near the end of his life he was worried how he could treat his favorite nurses to a steak dinner. He had a fondness for reading, hunting, race cars and Texas Rangers baseball games. If he asked one of his girls what time the game started, he would call up “Bake” (his dear friend Ray Baker) to confirm just in case. He had a sharp wit and very special gift of rhyme. His custom poems were much sought after as he tailored them specifically for the recipient. Ted relied heavily on his faith throughout his life. He was raised Church of Christ and was a member of West Angelo Church of Christ. He also enjoyed attending classes at West Angelo Bible Institute. He loved hanging with several of his friends and we are all very thankful and grateful for them.

He had many visitors in the last weeks he was in the nursing facility. We would like to thank all of those who visited and especially his close friends who tirelessly came by and called: Ray and Joyce Baker, John "Speedy" Nolan, Jerry Bunyard, Greg Baldwin, Dennis Bryan, John Rufenacht, Mae Simmons, Robert Talley, Billy Pierce, and Buddy Stapp. And he very much enjoyed visits and long talks with his special friend, Iris Culp.

Ted loved his 1957 class and had so much fun at the reunions. He especially enjoyed this last reunion with the “Hooper University” shirt bestowed on him by one of his favorite friends, Norman Marshall.

Also, a special thanks to the mother of his children, Linda Hooper, who welcomed him into her home and cooked many meals for him over the last several years for our family gatherings. You all were a comfort to him and to his children. He loved all his friends and cherished the visits. He will be sorely missed by many.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 18th at 10:30 AM at West Angelo Church of Christ with Mr. Portis Ribble officiating.

Niavez Cruz Gomez

07/15/2018 - 07:45 , by brandyp

Cruz Gomez Niavez was born on May 3, 1932, in Mason, Texas. He entered heaven on July 8, 2018.

Cruz, also known as “Papa Cruz” was a lover of music and entertainment. By the age of eight, he taught himself how to play the guitar. He played numerous venues throughout his lifetime and he sang wherever a song or singer was requested, be it a serenata, a wedding, or a quinceañera. We will always treasure the memories around our house with aunts, uncles, and cousins enjoying the party.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for our song, written especially for us, “Mis Cuatro Joyas.”

He helped form a mariachi trio “Los Tres Amigos” with Pablo Castro and Chon Hernandez and had the pleasure of playing with several other musicians. He was a prolific songwriter and composer with a song catalogue of 144 songs in the Tejano/Mariachi genre, the music of the heart and soul. He was determined to have a life as a musician, a journey that seemed to be destined for him. His musical talent can only be described as God-given.

After suffering three strokes at the age of 64, life changed his destiny once again. Encouraged by his daughter, Evelyn, he took up painting. In the last 10 years, he created over 500 original paintings.

Papa Cruz had a great sense of humor. He was courageous; giving up was never an option. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He kept strong in his faith by praying a daily rosary. Papa Cruz, you will be truly missed. We love you forever.

Cruz is preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Aguirre Niavez, and daughter, Bernice Niavez Logay.

He is survived by his daughters, Evelyn Niavez of San Angelo, TX, Marina Niavez Brown and husband Mark of Palmdale, CA, and Cynthia Niavez Bassham and husband Robert of San Angelo, TX. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Matthew Logay; his granddaughters, Taylor Renee Brown, 23, Nicole Marie Brown, 17, and Renee Solis, 14, as well as twin sisters, Lala Aguirre, Rosa Garcia and a very special brother in law, Noe Aguirre.

A graveside service will be held at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens on July 14, 2018, at 2 p.m.
